It was seven-thirty when Nina unlocked the front door of her house. Lisa had suggested going out to dinner but she had taken a rain check. The situations that had been unfolding over the past weeks had her struggling to cope with the process. Her whole body had started to hurt. She pushed her room door open and stepped inside.
To her surprise, there was someone in her bed, who could be so presumptuous. With a calmness that overpowered her, she was undertrained who it was, puzzled she slowly tiptoed over to the bed, closeup she recognized it was Michael, he was lying on his side with his back turned towards the entrance.
Nina’s face became washed with overflowing joy, it’s like her brain had cogs that couldn’t turn fast enough to take in the information from her wide eyes. For a moment there was a brief feeling of pause, her face was plastered with a big smile. It soon stretched from one side to another, just then Michael rolled over and looked at her, his eyes well awake and alert.
“Where on earth have you been?” he asked out aloud as he stretched out his hand, grabbed a hold of her and pulled her down close to him . In a flash she was in the bed, and his arms wrapped tightly around her, kissing her passionately on the mouth. She returned his kiss ardently, wanting him just as much as he wanted her.
“Michael dear.” she whispered, he didn’t stop, just continued kissing her.
“Michael, I’m so sorry,” with his lips already consumed hers, “Oh shut up and kiss me before I change my mind.”
Both of them were overwhelmed with happiness, “Nina darling.” He squeezed her curvaceous body to his. “I’ve been lying here going out of my mind, what took you so long? he whispered gently into her ear.
“Oh darling, that’s a long story.” she responded, with a smile painting a ray of sunshine all over her face.
“Fill me in later.” His tongue gently moved over her body, exploring her soft chocolate skin.
“I’m so sorry for allowing my ego to get in our way?” she said, he stopped for a brief second.
“I’m not surprised, sweetie.”
“It had me believed that I could live happily without you but I couldn’t be more wrong. I realized I hopelessly need you in my life.” She confessed. He instantly stopped what he was doing and looked at her.
The corners of his mouth slid upwards. “Finally, you’ve accepted the inevitable.” Nina stared at him, making a funny face. “You know you owe me an explanation too?”
“Of course, babes, I really would love to live the rest of my life in full comfort.”
“Excuse me sir, what do you mean by that?
“Goodness gracious what is that little brain of yours terrorizing at this moment.” There were hundreds of things going through her mind. But where to begin she is absolutely not sure but she has to begin somewhere.
“Michael. I have something very important to tell you.”
“Can’t it wait dear?”
“I’m afraid not honey.”
He continued kissing her tenderly over her body, enjoying the moment, giving her no alternative but to speak out.
“Michael, you have a daughter.” This caught his attention, he stopped what he was doing “Did you just say something?
“Yes Michael, You have a daughter.”
“Are you kidding me?”
“No, I’m not, I’m serious.”
“This isn’t the time to be a running joke sweetie.”
“This is no joke honey, I’m dead serious.” Michael stopped what he was doing instantly.
“Where did you get your information from? The gossip column?
“No Michael, this is real.”
“I don’t know what you are coming off with but I think this requires some kind of explanation, don’t you?”
“I would think so but unfortunately I can’t help you with this one.”
“Well, it would be best if you don’t have the facts, you should stay quiet.”
“This is a serious matter, Michael.”
Michaele sat up in bed. “’What’s going on Nina?”
It’s a story I fully don’t understand either, but I was told you have a daughter.”
“When did that happen.”
“Twenty years ago.”
Michael went quiet for a moment, then he spoke laughing.
“Honey if I got someone pregnant, don’t you think I would know?”
“I would have thought so”
“So who is this lovely woman I unknowingly got pregnant with?”
“Michael, this is not a joking matter, I’m very serious.” On hearing those words Michael stopped instantly and stared at her. she could see the shock registered on his face, it was washed blank with confusion. For a moment every muscle in his body was frozen and when he finally spoke, his response was.
“Are you kidding me? I was only seventeen years old then and I can still remember quite well whom I’ve slept with and, if I got someone pregnant, I would know.”
“Well honey, that should be easy for us to find out who her mom is, not that it should matter now, she’s an adult but it would be nice to know.”
“How you get that far? You’re not even sure if the rumor is true but you’re holding onto it.
“I’m sorry babe but you’re correct.”
“Anyway, let’s sleep on it and tomorrow we can decide if we need to hire an investigator to do some searching for us.”
“That sounds like a plan.”
Three weeks following and Nina was just as eager as Michael was, to learn the full story, but it didn’t seem as if any of them would ever learn the truth. The day Mr. Phillips was released from the hospital, His car went over a cliff and he was killed instantly.
A week following the funeral Michael and Nina were summoned to a meeting by Mr. Phillips lawyer, they went to the office filled with curiosity.
Two days later Michael, Nina and Laura were seated in the office of Larry Tucker this time for the reading of the will. They were filled with curiosity; Nina could understand why Michael was asked to join them but she couldn’t figure out the reason why she had to be there as well.
The lawyer started to speak and they all turned their attention to him. Each of them listened keenly as to what was to come. He opened a folder he had on his desk and began reading.
“In the event that my wife and I are both deceased. I bequeath all my assets to my only daughter Laura, and I appoint Michael Charles and Nina Charles as her guardians. Both persons turned immediately to face each other and stared in shock. They didn’t hear another word until the lawyer discontinued reading, opened a file jacket he had on his desk, took out a sealed envelope and handed it to Nina. minutes later the lawyer excused himself to give them privacy to deal with the situation they were confronted with, After Nina had gained some composure, she opened the envelope eagerly. It reads.
Dear Nina and Michael, if you’re reading this, it simply means that my wife and I are deceased. Our beloved daughter Laura Phillips is the biological child of both of you. She was born on the 26 of May 19 81 in the private wing of Mandeville Hospital, I’m sure you will recall giving birth to her. You can see she did not die as you were told. My wife and I found out we weren’t able to have children. And you guys were young and in good health. My wife and I did what we had to do, to achieve our desire. Hope you will find it in your heart to forgive us, not that it matters, we are no longer on this planet.
The details of how the conception took place that’s not important. What is most important is that she was conceived on that beautiful summer weekend in August 1980, on our 5th wedding anniversary with the help of artificial insemination. I’m sure you are both curious as to how it happened but it’s simple, one day when Michael came in for an examination, I removed some of his sperm and for you Nina it was much easier I’m sure you can recall having a terrible fall in your younger years your mom took you to my office and you had was to spent one week in the hospital? well that’s when you were inserted with Michael’s sperm. Feel free to do a DNA test if you’re in doubt.
I also think you know that I was the one responsible for paying off your mortgage and finding the person who donated the kidney for your son. I know that’s not much compared to what we’ve don’t to you both but it should help. I’m truly sorry if what we did will have a negative impact on both your lives, but she was a blessing to us. Hope you will understand.
The three people in the room were in awe. Nina started crying immediately. All that time she spent blaming herself for going to that party. She thought that was where she had gotten pregnant. Nina couldn’t believe what she read. The letter fell to the floor and she was about to collapse when her husband saw and held onto her. Now how are they going to deal with this situation? What kind of impact will this have on each individual? How will they accept it?
