Chapter 1
Prologue:
Peter and Isa had decided to go on a little bit of a road trip. Peter had been on a rather tough case for the last few months and just wanted to get away. He had been getting threats against this family nothing new there but this time there was something that was different about it. The defendant that he was prosecuting was rather evil and his poor kids would probably turn out just like him. He needed to go and see his daughter Jenny. Just to see that she was okay. That he hadn’t found her like he said that he would. He just wanted his girls to be safe. He knew the twins were since they were at camp for the week. So it was just Jenny that they needed to check on. She was somewhere up in The Mountains shooting her latest blockbuster. At a very young age she had hit stardom and yet it hadn’t changed her in the least bit. She was the same caring young woman that she had always been. He was so proud of her for that. He didn’t want this mess that he was in right now to even come close to touching her. Or anything that she had built for herself. She didn’t deserve that. He hadn’t even told Isa about what was going on. But he knew that sooner or later he was going to have to. He chose to tell her later. He would give her this one weekend without any worries. And then after that he would tell her that they were in danger. And together like always they would decide what to do and how to handle this.
Three months earlier:
He was sitting there reading through a few cases that he was working on. Trying to figure out how he was going to proceed when an email came across his desk. He knew that there was a new case in the works and from what he had been reading it was a rather bad one. He didn’t know if he wanted to take it or not because if something happened to his family he wouldn’t be able to forgive himself. But it was going to be a big case and then maybe the partners would finally see him for the brilliant lawyer that he was. He opened the email and was shocked to see what was in it.
Mr. Peter Santos,
You are to take on the new case and lose it. Majorly bomb the case and let Domick Zone walk free. If you don’t your family will be the ones to pay. Don’t tell anyone about this and just let it be. If you do this correctly your family will be just fine. If not then your three daughters and that wife of yours will be dead and it will be your entire fault.
Peter’s heart fell to the floor. This is what he didn’t want. He knew that this man was dangerous and had killed before so what would prevent him from doing it again. And this time it was his family on the line. But he couldn’t just let this man walk free to kill again. That was against his nature and his wife would say the same thing. But then again if he didn’t lose this case and his girls were hurt or killed or his wife he would never forgive him for it. He was stuck between a rock and a hard place. He knew what Isa was going to say. She wouldn’t want him to give up on a very important case. But this was the lives of his family that he was messing with. He put it out of his head as he pulled up to the house where Jenny was staying. It wasn’t anything to blink an eye at. It was a beautiful cabin that she had rented while she was up here. He knew that it was a vacation paradise and wondered where she had found it so cheap. He helped his wife out of the car and took their bags up to the house. Never knowing that they were being watched from inside the house. The man that was in the house smiled. He knew what he was supposed to do this weekend. He just didn’t know if he could do it or not. He had been watching Jenny for quite some time now. She was as beautiful as her posters made her out to be. She was a rare beauty.
He shook his head he was going to have to go through with this. He would take out the parents first and over the years get rid of the rest of the line. That way it didn’t look suspicious. He would be free of the curse that was his father once and for all. Maybe he would even be able to be seen as his father’s son instead of just a secret weapon he liked to use now and then. His brothers would know of him. But he had so much to do first before he could do this. He had to find a way to get into their lives so he could do this quietly and it wouldn’t come back on him. He already had his brothers in position to take out the other girls. This was going to have to get him in the good graces of his father for once. Then he wouldn’t be the bastard child that he was labeled. He would actually belong to someone and be able to be acknowledged by his brothers.
He would wait till tonight and then when everyone was asleep he would somehow get to the car and make it seem like an accident when they went home. He wasn’t sure how long they were staying but he would get this part over with and then over the years he would get rid of the rest of the family like his father would want him to. A smile sprung on his face as he thought about what was going to happen. He had giddiness about him that he didn’t quite understand. He didn’t like killing people but these were people that deserved it. They were trying to take his dad away from him. And that just wasn’t right. He needed his dad. His dad wasn’t a bad man just took extreme measures. They wouldn’t know what hit them when he got through with them. The years that this was going to take was going to be well worth it. Maybe he could get the help from his brothers in the end when the girls were old enough.
Peter was on edge all weekend and he just didn’t understand why. He knew that there was something off with everything. But his daughter was happy and that was all that mattered. They were able to be on a few of her shoots and he was amazed at how wonderful she was. Once she got into character she made you feel like you were in a story. She completely transformed herself. In this movie she was the shy bullied high school student trying to make it through the year. But she had hidden talents that nobody knew about. And now she was at the point where the high school jock was starting to notice her. He knew that she was going to go far in this business. There was just no way that she couldn’t. And he had a feeling that Jordan was going to follow in her footsteps. He wasn’t too sure about his Jerrica. She was too shy for this sort of thing she was more of a behind the scenes type of person. He was so proud of his girls. A tinge of guilt once again hit him. Because of him their lives might be short lived. He had to tell Isa on the way home today about what was going on and see what she thought that he should do. She was always good with that. Maybe then they could come up with a plan that would save his family that he wanted to keep alive. To see the grandkids that they were going to have one day. To watch those boys that grew up next door to see what they would turn out like. They had a rough patch when their parents died. He remembered that day. He had lost his best friend and so had Isa and even his girls when their little friend was in the car. The boys had been saved because they had been at a football camp. They had taken them in while they finished school. He had a feeling that his little girl Jordan had a thing for Caleb but he was far from ready to start any kind of relationship. He was in the police academy while Brent was going to start college in the fall and his little girl was only sixteen and Caleb was in his twenties. Sometimes he wondered if Jenny and Brent would ever have anything. And right now Jerrica was going through something with her boyfriend. To be a father of girls was nerve racking. But it was so worth it. He loved his girls with all of his life.
They were out at breakfast thanks to Jenny. He watched as people came up and wanted her autograph. She would introduce them as her parents. Yes most definitely proud of his little girl. After breakfast they were leaving to go home and get there before the girls got there. And he would have time to talk to Isa about what was going on. It was just this feeling of unease that had him concerned. He didn’t want to worry his wife or his daughters. The talk over the breakfast was light and fun. He loved to watch his girls talk about anything and everything. It made his heart a little lighter and made him thing that things were actually going to be okay.
They finally made their goodbyes to Jenny promising that they would be back up here soon and bring her sisters to see her. They climbed in the car and drove off. Isa was so excited to see this new movie that she was doing. She couldn’t help but bubble about their daughter. He smiled at that. And he regretted that he was going to have to take that away from her and let her know that this family was in danger. He listened for her for a few minutes before he would burst her bubble. He noticed that he was going downhill and he was going too fast. He tried to push on the brakes but it was like they weren’t there. He knew this was bad. He heard Isa stop talking and looked over at her and saw the fear in her eyes. He knew that she knew that there was trouble coming for them. They were picking up speed and there was nothing that he could do. In the back of his mind he knew that this was it for them. They would never see their girls again. And Domick wins. He looks at his wife and sees the knowledge in her eyes that this is it for them. He tried to drive the car as best as he could to get them to safety but the cliff that leads to a valley is coming up fast. He couldn’t do anything to stop the car or take the turn at the incredible speed that they were going. He looked over at Isa and saw the tears running down her face as she knew that this was it for them. He grabbed her hand and the last thing that he is able to say is that he loved her, before the car went over the cliff. It was like watching a movie on the big screen as the ground came up towards them in slow motion. He couldn’t close his eyes. He just heard the soft gasp of Isa next to him. His last thought was of his girls. Then everything is black. All the plans that they had had about the grandkids that they would someday have is taken away from them. Their girls in a split second would only have each other to rely on. They were orphans now. Never again would he hear about their day or hold them close.
He watched from high up. And the moment the car went over the cliff he knew that what he set in motion couldn’t be reversed. He was sad because he had met the Santos a few times and they seemed to be good people but this was for his family. A family that had always kept him secret. This was going to be the only way for him to get some status in the family. Now he needed to keep on track to get this job finished.
Chapter One
Jenny sighed as she finally made it home after a long drive. It gave her time to think over the decisions that she had made. She knew that her manager wouldn’t understand but, she knew that she needed to be home. When she was away she longed for it. Even though the one person that she wanted more than her next breath was here. The Hollywood scene was no longer for her. She wanted to be with her family. They had been through so much the last six years and it had brought them even closer. And now with two more additions to the family she wanted to be around to watch them grow. She had her designing career that she could focus on. Even though that would put her close to Brent. That was just a dream that she was going to have to let die and give up the fantasy of having kids and growing old with him. Something she had held onto since she was a kid. She would just have to give up on loving Brent and hope that the love she had for him would at some point fade away.
She parked the car and just sat there for a moment and closed her eyes. She should have told someone that she was coming home but she needed some time to think about the next steps in life that she was going to take. She would call Jo first thing in the morning. If anyone would understand it would be her sister. She had gone through the same thing with Caleb for years the only difference was that Caleb had come around to her way of thinking. Even though Jordan was worse than a bulldog when she got an idea in her mind. Brent would never do that. He was stubborn. Worse than his brother. She could see that now. There was something that just scared him and he could never get over it. He had never told her about it. She didn’t know if he had told anyone about it. Maybe he would never get over it. She was going to have to move on some point in her life and try to be happy.
She shook her head. She would be able to work it out just because it was who she was. But it didn’t mean that it didn’t hurt. Some part of her was dying on the inside. But it was something that you just put away and moved on. She had done this more times than she wanted to think about. She walked up the stairs to her porch then decided that she was going to walk around for a while give her some time to think. She didn’t want to go in that dark and lonely house just yet. She walked back down the stairs and around the back. She was halfway across the back yard when the house went up in flames. The blast sent her flying backwards and knocked her out. The last thing she was thinking of was she should have told someone that she was here.
He waited patiently in the shadows. It was about time that she was coming home. He had been waiting for her to come home. To finally have this done and over with. Something that should have already been started with her sisters but his brothers was stupid. Now it was left to him to finish the task and take out the Santos clan. He had to think about the little ones. They were innocent. He wasn’t sure that he could take them out. But the sisters had taken all his family from him so it was time that he paid them back. And this time he was going to start with Jenny. He cleared the little debris that had fallen on her and looked down at her. She was a beautiful creature. This didn’t surprise him. He knew what had caught his brother’s eyes. They were a beautiful mix of evil. But he wasn’t going to let himself get caught up in this little fantasy. But that didn’t mean that he wasn’t going to have a little fun with her before he killed her. And then it was going to be her sister’s turn to die. He gently put a piece of paper on her shirt he knew that Brent would find it. And it would send him over the edge. As he put everything back in place he thought about how the Watson brothers were going to take this. He couldn’t wait to see the look on the face of Caleb when he found out who he was. That was going to be another perk to what he was doing. His family would be able to rest in peace and he would be able to get on with his life because nobody would ever find him again. He took one more look at the beauty that laid there in front of him. Soon she would be with him and at his mercy. Then the fun would begin. He laughed as he heard the sirens in the background. It was time to put his mask back on before his ploy was up.
Chapter Two
Brent sat at his desk looking over some of the proofs that he had taken today. Jordan was getting ready to put her wedding collection together. A project that had been in the making for the last six years. He was so proud of his sister in law. She had been through so much but she had come out on top. Both of them had. Jerrica finally found love and someone that would make her stay in one place and feel safe. Then his mind went to Jenny. He always saw the hurt in her eyes every time he refused the love that she so freely gave him. But he just wasn’t ready. Now he was starting to see what kind of jerk he was being. He missed her so much when she was gone. He wished that she would come home so they could try again. He knew that he could do right by her. He was no longer going into danger to be a photographer. He let that go after Jerrica. Now he ran S&W with Jordan and Jenny when she was in town. He knew that she wanted to do movies again and the first one that she did had been a hit. Now she was on another one that from the looks of it was going to be another hit. He knew that she was talented. But he still worried. He knew that the threat to the girls was far from over. He just didn’t know when it was going to pop up again. And with her being in L.A by herself wasn’t good. But what could he say. As far as she thought she didn’t mean anything to him.
That could change all he had to do was picking up the phone and let her know what he felt. What he had been scared to feel all of these years. The only problem, would she be able to forgive him for the stupid reason he had run from her. Maybe first thing in the morning he would call and talk to her see what she thought about it. But for now he needed to go home and get some sleep. He had been looking at the same pose for the last fifteen minutes. He grabbed his keys and jacket and headed out the door. He heard all the sirens as he went to the car but thought nothing about it. There was probably a grass fire or something that needed attention. It had been a dry and hot summer. He got into his car and headed towards Jenny’s a nightly ritual. As he got closer to it there was a strange glow to the horizon. Something in his stomach started to turn to lead. Even before he got over the hill he knew that it was Jenny’s house that was on fire. He was just glad that she wasn’t here to see this. At least she was safe in L.A. he pulled up to the house as close as he could just as his brother was stepping out of his car.
“Brent have you heard from Jenny?” Caleb asked.
“No why would I? What’s going on? What happened here?” Brent said not liking this one little bit.
“I don’t know I just got the call but from the looks of it her house is gone. I was going to get a hold of her and let her know but she’s not answering.”
“Maybe she is sleeping or working.” Brent said knowing that it wasn’t true.
“I know something just seems off. I don’t know what though.” Caleb said.
“Well your gut usually doesn’t fail you.” Brent said looking at the house. He was having the same feelings that his brother was having.
He looked around trying to see what was out of place. He knew this property like the back of his hand. Then he saw it. Jenny’s car was right out front. That meant she was here at the house.
“Oh my God Caleb. Look! Jenny’s car is here!” Brent said pushing his hands through his hair.
Caleb didn’t say anything back to Brent just ran down to the command post and the officer in charge. “Has anyone checked the house?” He demanded.
“No sir we haven’t. I didn’t think that Ms. Santos was home.”
“That’s her car sitting right over there. Have someone check inside the house for her.” Caleb said desperately.
“Cal, if anyone was still in that house they wouldn’t have survived it. The house is gone.” Carl explained to his former boss.
“NO! She’s not gone look for her.” Brent said coming up behind them.
“Brent they are going to look for her. She wasn’t in the house she couldn’t be. That would just be too easy.” Caleb said trying to keep his calm demeanor. He scanned the front of the house but he saw nothing there.
He motioned for Brent to follow him and they went around back. He knew that she liked to take a walk so maybe to stretch out after a long day she would have walked around her gardens in the back. They went around the back but at first glance there was nothing there but debris everywhere. He looked closer and under some of that debris he thought that he saw a small hand. He ran over there with Brent on his heels and gently dug through it. Jenny lay at the bottom of it.
“Carl! We need the medics over here.” Caleb yelled as Brent knelt next to her to take a pulse.
“Cal, her pulse is strong. Her head is bleeding though.”
“Here take this. Gently put it on her head.” Caleb said taking off his jacket and handing it to his brother.
“Jen, baby look at me.” Brent begged her.
“Keep talking to her Brent.” Caleb said pulling out his phone. Brent knew he was going to be circling around the wagons.
“Jenny what did you do to yourself. Why didn’t you let someone know that you were home?” Brent asked checking to see if there was something else that they had missed when he found the paper. He gently pulled it away from her.
Three sisters
Of the Santos clan
Will one by one
Die by my hand.
You don’t know me.
You never will.
But you will know what I felt.
You took from me
Now I take from you
Now sit back and watch what I do.
Brent wanted to wrap his hand around this person’s neck. He didn’t understand what was going on. What had happened to make the girls hated like they were? He looked up to see Caleb standing there looking down at him with the same grave look that he was feeling. Brent was careful not to handle the note too much so he handed it over to Caleb and looked back down at Jenny. This was the last time this family was going to be in danger. They were going to make a statement. Nobody messes with this family and gets away with it.
Jenny’s head felt like someone was hammering away on it with a hammer. She didn’t understand what was going on. She knew that she had come home but why did it smell like fire. Maybe she had been dreaming. She opened her eyes and the pain worsened. Along with the ringing. After everything started coming into focus she saw Brent’s handsome face marred with worry. What was he doing in her house? She didn’t even know that he was in town. She tried to move but everything hurt.
“Baby please don’t move. It’s ok.” Brent said glad to see she was awake.
“Brent what happened? Why are you here?” Jenny asked confused. She looked around and saw all the police and firemen.
“Something happened to your house sweetheart.” Brent tried to explain while he was being pulled out of the way.
Brent hated the confusion on her face as she looked around. But at least she was awake and alive. But he knew that if this manic was to get his hands on her that could change in a blink of an eye. And no matter what kind of precautions they took he could get to her. Just like they had with Jerrica and Jordan. But he looked at them now and they were flourishing. With their kids. They only had a few reminders of what had happened to them years before. They were a strong bunch of women. And he knew that Jenny was the strongest but from the sounds of it this man was getting desperate to get rid of them. But the same question is why? What had this family done that been so bad that they deserved total extinction? That was the question that still needed to be answered.
Brent followed the medics as they put Jenny in the ambulance. They didn’t argue when he got in behind them and he was thankful for that. Right now he wasn’t sure that he could leave her side. He had done that too many times before. Now he was going to have to show her that he was done with that. From the looks of everything she was lucky she wasn’t hurt worse. She had a cut on her head and some bumps and bruises but they wanted to make sure that there wasn’t any internal damage done to her. When they got to the hospital she was whisked away and they wouldn’t let him go with them. So he was left in the waiting room. He hated to wait. He looked up to see Caleb coming through the doors the phone on his ear. Likely talking to Jordan or Jerrica. He waved at Caleb when he looked up. He quickly got off the phone and went over to his brother.
“Anything yet?” Caleb asked.
“No they took her back and I haven’t heard anything. Do you think it’s starting again?” Brent asked the question that he knew would be on all their minds.
“Yes as much as I don’t want it to be.” Caleb said
“This almost feels like the final show down. What if we’re not that lucky this time?” Brent said afraid that they might lose.
“I’m not losing Jordan. Jake won’t lose Jerrica. He’s not taking Jenny. He’s messing with the wrong family Brent. He should get it in his head that he’s not going to take us down. We’ll take him down first.” Caleb said with deadly steel in his voice.
“Have you talked to Jo?” Brent asked.
“Yes she should be here any time now. She’s not too happy that Jenny didn’t tell anyone that she was coming home. She knows better than that.”
“I know. I wonder if the movie took a break.”
“I don’t know.” Caleb said calmly.
Brent couldn’t sit down anymore. He needed something to do. He wanted to rush into the back and see Jenny. To make sure that she was really okay. He wanted to do so much to make up for the time that he had wasted running from the feelings that he had for her. He looked up and saw that Jordan was rushing through the doors with Candy in her arms. She ran to Caleb and he gently took her in his arms. Brent always loved how Caleb took such good care of Jordan. Even before he gave into his feelings for her. He listened as Caleb explained what had happened to Jenny. Brent walked over there and took Candy out of Jordan’s arms needing something to do and so he could distract the little girl from what was going on. She was only three but she was smart.
“Santos family?”
“Right here. How is she? Is she okay?” Jordan said taking the lead
“She’s good. She’s awake. Bumps and bruises for the most part. She has a concussion but I don’t think it’s too serious.” The doctor explained.
“Can we go see her?”
“Only two at a time right now. We are going to keep her overnight just as a precaution.”
“Brent you and Jo go in. I’ll stay out here with Candy. I got a few more calls to make anyway.” Caleb said kissing Jo on the head.
Chapter Three
He followed the doctor and Jordan down the hallway. He didn’t know what to expect when he walked into the room. She was lying on the bed. She was so pale but at least she was awake. He could see some of the scratches that was on her face and knew that it could be much worse. There was a white bandage on her forehead where she had been bleeding and he could see the bruising around it. It killed him that someone had hurt her and he wasn’t there to protect her. There was also a shielded look in her eyes. Something that he had hoped he would never see there but he knew that he deserved it. After all that he had put her through he was surprised that she was even talking to him still.
“Stop it Brent.” Jenny said pulling him from his thoughts
“Stop what Jen?” he smiled at her.
“I can hear your thoughts all the way over here. This wasn’t your fault. It’s not like you made my house blow up did you. Or anyone for that matter. Was probably a gas leak.” Jenny said then looked at the Brent’s face and her heart dropped. Knowing the answer before anyone said anything. “Wasn’t a gas leak was it?”
“No, it was intently.” Brent said not able to look at her. Knowing that she would put two and two together.
“He’s back isn’t he?” Jenny asked knowing the truth without it being spoken.
“Yes he’s back.”
“Jerrica? Where is she? She could be in danger? And little Edward. What about Candy? And you Jordan?” Jenny was worried about everyone else but herself.
“Honey we are safe. Cal has Candy and I’m sure that he’s talking to Jerrica right now. You’re the one that he has come after first. So it’s you are in danger. How are you feeling? Better yet why didn’t you tell anyone that you were coming home? I thought that you were working on a movie.”
“I quit.”
“You quit? Why? What happened?” Jordan asked sitting on the bed next to her sister.
“I just couldn’t do it anymore. I wanted to be with my family. There is more than making movies. It just wasn’t for me anymore.” Jenny said with downcast eyes.
“I still don’t understand why you didn’t tell anyone. You know the danger that is out there for us.” Jordan said mad and scared.
“I know Jo, I honestly didn’t think of it.”
“Okay I’m sorry Jen, I just worry about you. And now this is happening.” Jordan said getting up to pace.
“Little sister I’m the one who’s supposed to worry. I’m fine. He didn’t get to me. I’ll be careful now that we know what he’s up to again.” Jenny assured her sister.
“Jen that’s not enough. He’s after this family I have no idea what for but he thinks that we all deserve to die.” Jordan said afraid for her sister.
“I know that Jo and I’m not going to make it easy for him. Nor am I going to stick my head in the sand and try to hide from him. He will not rule my life.” Jenny said with a stubbornness Jordan had never heard from her.
“Jen that’s not the point. The point is you need to be careful. Your family needs you Jen. Every one of us.” Jordan said looking at Brent pointy.
“She’s right Jen; you can’t take chances like that again. As much as we would like to think he won’t get past us his brothers have twice before and almost killed your sisters. We don’t want a third time to be a charm. Your sisters need you and if you will let me I need you.” Brent said.
Jenny didn’t know what she had just heard. Brent didn’t need anyone but himself he had always been that way so why say something like that to her now knowing how she felt for him. She didn’t dare let herself start dreaming of weddings and kids and growing old. She had done that too many times before to let herself fall that fast once again. She was going to make him work for it this time. She knew what her sister was thinking looking at her. Brent had always been her weakness. But this time she was damned if she was going to let him get too close to her and hurt her again. She smiled at her sister letting her know she wasn’t going to make this easy for him. This time she was going to be prepared for him to let her down. That’s what he did.
Brent knew there was some kind of unspoken sister talk. He knew it was him that was going to have to pay and to tell you the truth he deserved it. He had been horrible to Jenny. He deserved to be made to grovel a little. A lot if he wanted to be honest. She was a smart woman and wouldn’t let him come back that easy again. She didn’t have a reason too. But he was going to prove to her that he deserved another chance this time. That he had seen the error of his ways. He smiled down at her. She smiled back but it was strained. She was keeping herself guarded. She was going to be surprised at what the end was going to be.
Something had changed in Brent. She could see it in his eyes and hear it in his voice. The fact that he was even in town surprised her. He was usually in some other country taking amazing pictures to show the world what was going on. But it was more to run from her and whatever it was that made him scared. But she couldn’t think about that right now. She had other things to handle. This monster was after her family again and this time he came after the wrong sister. She wasn’t going to let him get to her other two sisters. They had been through too much already and they were mothers. She would take him out first even if that meant that she would die in the process. This time was going to be the end of it. She just had to figure out how she was going to do this and keep her family safe.
“Ms. Santos.” The doctor came through the door.
“Hello.”
“Well it looks like for as bad as the house explosion sounds you made it out good. We just want to keep you over night to watch you. You do have a concussion but we just want to make sure there‘s nothing more serious.” the doctor explained.
“Okay, not that I want to.” Jenny said.
“It will just be a night I’m sure of it Ms. Santos. We just want to make sure that you didn’t do more damage than it looks. But I’m positive that you haven’t and you will be out of here tomorrow. Right now how about you try and get some rest. You guys need to go home and rest too.”
“I’m not going anywhere. I’m going to stay here in this chair if it’s all the same to you.” Brent said with no room for argument.
“Okay. But Jordan you need to go home and get some rest.”
Jordan nodded her head. She said goodnight to Jenny and headed out the door to find Caleb. She knew that the doctor had been with this family through everything. He knew what this family went through. And now that they were going through it again he was afraid for them. Brent just sat silent in the chair while the doctor looked her over one more time. And the nurse came in and gave her something to help her with the pain. Jenny was sometimes so stubborn and didn’t tell people that she was in pain. But he could tell that her head was hurting her something bad. He smiled at her knowing that she was still trying to figure him out. But that was going to have to be another problem for another day. He watched her drift off to sleep as the pills took effect and soon he followed her.
Chapter Four
As she looked around she noticed that there was seven chairs sitting around a table and her family was in each of those chairs. None of them moving though their eyes were open and accusing her. She knew that they were dead. Even the little ones. All of them dead because she couldn’t protect them. It was her job to protect them. And she had failed miserably. Tears were streaming down her face. Tears of sadness and rage. Why had they come after her family? What had they done that was so awful? Questions she wanted answered but knew they would never be. She knew that there was someone behind her. When she turned she saw a faceless man. He had a knife dripping with blood. And she knew it was her turn to die. She was ready. She didn’t want to live without her family. Everyone was gone now. She closed her eyes as her rushed to her. She welcomed death. She wanted to be with her family. The ones that she had so miserably failed.
Brent heard Jenny crying out in her sleep. He woke up and was at her side in an instant. Gently he took her in his arms and tried to wake her up. Whatever it was had to be something bad. She was shaking and crying uncontrollably. Something she never did. He didn’t like it one bit. He shook her gently trying to get her to wake up out of whatever night mare she was in. He didn’t want to see her scared like this. She was the strongest woman that he knew.
“Jen, honey come on wake up.” Brent said calmly. “It’s okay, you’re safe now. I’m not going to let anything happen to you.”
“Brent?” Jenny asked confused.
“Yes baby. You’re okay it was just a bad dream.” Brent said looking down into her eyes.
“Where is everyone? Are they okay? Are you okay?” Jenny said looking him over.
“Honey I’m fine. Do you want to talk about it?” Brent asked laying her back down but keeping her hand in his.
“I was in a room with a table and all of you guys were sitting there. You were dead but I could see it in your eyes that you blamed me. I couldn’t protect you. I turned around and a man was coming at me his blade was dripping with blood. I welcomed it. I wanted to die because he had taken everything else from me and there was nothing more to live for.” Jenny said her voice thick with tears.
“Oh baby that was just a dream. We are all okay and were not going to let anything happen to this family.” Brent said crawling into the bed with her and just holding onto her.
She knew it was true but the nightmare still had her a little on edge. She was going to have to be more careful. This wasn’t going to be how this family ended. She would make sure of that. She would take down this man and keep him far away from her family. He would never hurt them gain. If he thought that she was just going to lay there and take it without fighting back this man was stupid. She wasn’t some puppy dog that he had just kicked. This was her family and their future. She wasn’t about to let that get taken away for anyone. Even if that meant that she would have to give up her own life. But that would have to be a last resort. She was glad Brent moved in and lay down beside her. It felt nice to be held by him. It felt like home to her. She slowly fell back to sleep with the sound of his heartbeat.
Brent smiled when he felt her relaxing next to him. He knew that she was afraid and he didn’t blame her. But maybe she wouldn’t be so afraid of him from now on. This was where he belonged. Always had but he wasn’t too sure that he could make her happy. He was stupid. Something that he was going to have to make up for. But he had the rest of their lives for that. He cuddled closer to her and soon he was drifting off to sleep also.
What a cute couple these two made. He stood over them wanting to just end it right there but something stopped him. Even though she was covered in bruises and scratches. Once again her beauty called to him. He didn’t know why she was calling to him like this. He wanted to end Brent for being in the same bed as her but he knew that would be useless. Brent didn’t know what kind of people the whole Santos clan was. It wasn’t his fault they were all users. Caleb and Jake had fallen under their spell and he was going to help them out of it. The way he saw it he was doing a favor to them. And those poor kids, having mothers like that. They would be twisted and deceitful if he didn’t destroy them. So all around him was doing a good deed for everyone. In time they would forgive him and thank him for what he was doing. But for now he had to let things happen as they would. He couldn’t give his cover away just yet. There was still so much more that he needed to do. Brent started to stir so that was his queue to get out of there and fast. One last look and he quietly went out the door. There was still so much planning to do.
Brent had the oddest feeling that he was being watched. He woke up to an empty room. He got up and looked around. Once he was satisfied that there was no one else in the room. He looked at his watch and noticed that it was almost seven o’clock. He needed some coffee. Maybe Caleb would bring him some up. He didn’t want to leave Jenny. He knew that she was scared and she needed to know that he was there for her this time. He was going to do everything in his power to make sure that she knew that he was there for her this time.
He went and looked out the window over his small town. He had grown up here. When he was gone he wanted nothing more than to come back home and when he was home he wanted nothing more than to leave. But now he just wanted to stay here and spend the rest of his life with Jenny. Raising a family. Having family dinners with Caleb and Jordan and even Jake and Jerrica when they were in town. This was what he was missing; this was what he should have been running towards not away from all of those years. He had been a fool to run from all of this.
He looked over at Jenny. She looked like a sleeping angel laying there. She still had cuts and bruises but he was so thankful that it hadn’t been any worse that it was. She could have been killed in that blast if she hadn’t decided to take a walk. And her house should have been her safe haven not somewhere that would be part of a killing plan for her. He was going to get his hands on the person that had done this. Jail would be too good for him. She started to stir and he was beside her in an instant. He knew that she had been having bad dreams last night.
Jenny knew the instant that Brent had left her. She felt the warmth of him leave her. She wanted him to come back and hold her again. That was the first time in a very long time that she was able to sleep without having to worry that someone might hurt her. She knew in the back of her mind that someone was out to get her.
“Good Morning.” he smiled down at her.
“Morning.” she said trying to move and winced at the effort.
“Are you okay?” Brent asked not knowing what to do for her.
“I’m just sore. I think that’s to be expected especially the day after. I’m thankful that that’s all I am and not dead.” she gave him half a smile.
“Yes we are thankful for that.” Brent said kissing her on the forehead just as Caleb came in.
“Good Morning all I come bearing gifts.”
“Oh thank God. I need an IV of this stuff set up right now.” Brent gladly took the cup that Caleb offered.
“I brought you one Jen, but we should get it okay from the doc first. I’m not too sure if he would want you drinking this just yet.”
“Please just give it to me Cal. Please. I need something to help me stay awake.” Jenny begged knowing that he couldn’t say no to her.
“Jenny…..”
“I’ll take full responsibility for this. I need caffeine.”
He just shook his head and handed it over to her. If there was one thing that he had learned over the years of being married to her sister it was that when they wanted something there was no telling them no. Now he could see full well where Jordan had gotten her stubbornness from. He just hoped that Jenny would be able to keep ahold of that stubbornness until this was over. She was going to need it.
“When are Jake and Jerrica getting here?” she asked taking a sip and sighing out loud.
“They should be here anytime. I know they left early this morning. About four a.m. it’s now what almost seven. They should land any time now.” Caleb explained.
“You have to promise me something. And this is more important than anything. You have to promise that you will keep my sisters safe and those little ones also. They are far more important than me. Their safety comes first.” Jenny said making sure that she was heard.
“Jenny you know that’s not up for debate. Each one of your safety is important to us. Not one above the other. Nothing is going to happen to those little ones. They are too innocent.” Brent said a little bit of temper coming to the surface.
“I just don’t want you guys letting something happen to Jordan and Jerrica cause your too busy trying to keep me safe. It’s not fair. They have families that need them.” Jenny explained
“And you have this family that’s needs you. No matter what you think.” Brent said.
“How’s the patient this morning.” the doctor came in stopping whatever argument was going to come from Jenny.
“I’m fine considering. I’m sore.” Jenny smiled at the doctor.
“That’s good considering the other options. I’m going to let you go home Jenny but you need to take it easy. You’re still sore. And you have to give yourself some time to heal.”
“Don’t worry Doc. She’s going to take it easy and let us take care of her for the first time.” Brent said not letting Jenny argue with the doctor.
“Okay I’ll send a nurse in with the discharge papers and instructions.” The doctor smiled and made his way to the hall. As Jordan came in
“Good Morning I heard the good news. You’re coming home with us?” Jordan smiled as Jerrica came in the room also.
“Jerrica, you made it.” Jenny said as relief spread through her.
“Of course I did. I can’t believe that someone was stupid enough to go after my sister.” Jerrica said gently hugging her.
“Yea, well they didn’t get what they wanted. I’m still here and I plan on staying around. Now I’m ready to go home. Jordan did you bring me some new clothes.” Jenny asked starting to get out of bed.
“Of course I did.”
“Can you help me get ready?” Jenny said trying to get out of bed.
“Here let me help you.” Brent said rushing to her side.
Jenny loved him with his arms around her. She was so stiff and sore. She allowed him to help her to the rest room. She looked up into his eyes and saw the love swirling in his eyes. Something she had yearned to see for so long. And now it was finally there. She wasn’t sure she could trust it though. She shut the door and turned to look at herself in the mirror. She looked like she had just walked through a war. Her hair was matted with blood and debris still. Her face had cuts. There on one big cut across her forehead. That was going to be a nice scar. She opened the bag and was glad that her sister had thought of everything. She got changed and then started to work on her hair. It was going to take a while for her to get the knots out of this. Sometimes she wondered why she kept her hair this long.
She decided to wash her face a little. She was getting tired already. Yeah she knew that her body had to heal like everyone had said but she didn’t have to like being side lined. She slowly walked back out where everyone was and opted for the chair instead of the bed. It hurt too much to get into bed. How pathetic was that. She started brushing her hair while everyone went over what was going to happen or should happen. She was so tired of hearing about this. The last six years had been like this. Trying to plan on keeping someone safe and then almost losing them. Could this family go through something like this again? And what if they lost someone this time? That might be the last straw that breaks them. And these poor little ones that was caught up in the middle of this. She wanted to know why this was happening to her family. Something she had been putting off until now. She was going to find out the reason behind their parents death. She knew that it had always seemed like more than just an accident. But she never thought she could handle the truth. But now it almost seemed as important that she did know the truth. Then maybe this could be put to rest.
She smiled up at Jordan when she came over and took the brush from her. She loved it when Jordan brushed her hair. She used to always do it when they were kids. So much had changed since then. So much had been taken away from them and yet here they were standing together like they had always done. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all. Maybe. But who knew.
She just wanted to get out of here and be able to relax and not have to worry about if there was someone coming into the hospital room that could kill her. Or her sisters. Waiting around just wasn’t her style and she was going to have to turn this up a little. She just couldn’t let Brent, Jake, and Caleb know what she was up to. They wouldn’t approve. She was relieved when she saw the nurse come in with the papers that she needed. She listened as the nurse gave her instructions. Once she signed the papers she was turned over to her family. She knew once they got her home that they would suffocate her. But she would love every minute of it.
She tried to listen to everyone as they talked about their days and what they were planning. What was going on at the studio? On and on. This is how life should be. Not worrying when the next shoe was going to drop and someone was going to get hurt. Could it ever be that simple again? Was things ever going to be okay again? She had to pull herself out of this. She had to be strong if she was going to survive this and put a stop to it once and for all. She knew that she was going to have to dive into her dad’s things and see what had happened in the past. She knew that this had something to do with one of his past cases. She had to think where all of that stuff was from daddy’s office. Her heart stopped for a minute when she thought she had left it in her house. If it was in her house it was gone now. But it couldn’t have been. She knew that they had used it to help find Jordan and Jerrica.
“Jen you okay?” Brent asked with concern.
“Yeah just thinking. Caleb what happened to all of daddy’s old files?” Jenny asked.
“I think that we still have them at the station. I know Jake was in the process of getting it all on his computer.” Caleb said wondering what was going through that head of hers.
“I’d like to look over this. Something has got to be in there about why this is happening to us.”
“I was thinking the same thing. Even the journals that we found. Though all of those have disappeared. And I don’t know if Jake was able to get them in the computer or not. Do you know Jerrica?” Caleb asked.
“I have no idea what that husband of mine does. He tends to work faster than I can keep up with him. He’s at the house with little Ed. Going over the security changes that we’re going to have to do. You how he is with all of his tech things.” Jerrica said.
“I know. But I think Jenny is onto something. It’s just not adding up. I’ve been thinking over a few things too. But I would rather talk about it when we get home and get Jenny settled in. Too many people here can be lurking around.” Caleb explained.
They all nodded. They had been through this before. They knew the drill. There were just some people that they couldn’t trust. But the problem with that they just weren’t sure about who they all were. Jenny looked over at Brent and found him watching her. There was just so much that had changed about him. She wondered if she could trust him with her heart this time. She wasn’t sure she would be able to survive a broken heart while trying to stay alive. She needed to be at her top game right now. She felt Jordan squeeze her shoulder knowing what she was thinking. She had so much to think about and get straightened out. But first all she could think about was getting somewhere safe. Not for just herself but for all of them.
Chapter Five
The next few weeks were filled with trying to come up with a plan to keep everyone safe. Going through old files trying to put this puzzle together. Something was starting to point to the fact that her parent’s accident wasn’t even an accident. But someone killed them on purpose. But that didn’t make any sense to Jenny. She knew her father. He didn’t have a mean bone in his body. He was one of those people that you wanted on your side when you were going into a battle. He would back you up no matter what. But then again he wouldn’t be the person you wanted to go against you either. He would tear you up in court if you were on the wrong side of the law. Something was starting to make sense to her. This had to be about an old case of his. Something that he had to put a father behind bars for.
She had an idea but she didn’t want to get the rest of their hopes up. She called her daddy’s old secretary she knew that this woman never got rid of anything. If she had something about one of daddy’s cases that was about to go terribly wrong it would be her. She called her up and was so glad that she was still living where they had last seen her. They got over the small chat and Jenny was ready to get to the real reason she had called.
“Kelly I know that this was a long time ago. But we’ve been going over some of daddy’s older cases. Do you remember anything that would have gotten him in trouble with a defendant? Anything that would put his life in danger?”
“Jenny dear that was such a long time ago. But there were a few cases that were like that. I worried about your daddy so much.”
“Was there any cases where there was any children involved? Boys particularly?” Jenny asked.

Peter and Isa Santos- parents of the girls
Domick Zone- Dad of the brothers
“I think there was one. I’ll go through my cases and then anything that I have left of it I will messenger over to you. Would that be okay sweetie?” Kelly asked.
“Of course Miss Kelly. I thank you for this. I just was looking over something’s and I want to make sure that everything daddy had his hands in got resolved.” Jenny said not wanting to let on to the real reason she wanted the case files.
Kelly assured Jenny that she would get them over to her as soon as she found anything. Until then she had nothing to do but sit at home under house arrest. She knew that her family meant well but she wanted to go see the damage the explosion had cost and if her house was really a total loss. She had seen the pictures that Caleb had gotten for her. But, she needed to go and see it. But she would give them the satisfaction of this house arrest for now. Sooner or later they were going to have to go and see the house. She decided that she would go and take a shower for the first time on her own. Her sisters were always there to help her but she felt pretty good right now. It had been a few weeks and she was finally starting to get back to normal. Able to move on her own. She might even be adventurous and take a bath later tonight. That would feel so great. To just listen to some music and unwind with nobody around. She had so much to think about. Brent wasn’t leaving her side this time. He was making her see that. It was like he was taking it upon himself to prove to her that he had finally seen what everyone else had been saying all of these years. She was glad that he had finally given into his heart and now they would be able to be happy once again. Once this mess was over with that was. She finished washing her hair and stepped out of the shower. She looked in the mirror and saw that her forehead was still an ugly purple and blue mixture. She hoped that this would soon go away and it wouldn’t leave much of a mark. She knew that Tabs could work wonders with makeup but she would still know that it was there. Not that she was vain or anything like that. But she did have an image to up hold.
She just shook her head and brushed her teeth. And went about doing her hair and fixing her make up to the best that she could. She managed to cover up the ugly bruise to where it was barely noticeable. But she made her hair where it would fall just right over that area of her forehead. Then she went into her room and got dressed. She wanted to look like she was half away alive so she dressed nicely. Of course maybe some of it was to show Brent what he had been missing all of these years. She picked out the colors just right. Just enough to show off her flaming red hair and her crystal green eyes. Then when she had decided that she looked good enough she went upstairs. She needed to get some work done anyway. The list was long. But first thing was with her insurance company to see if she could even restore her house or just count it a complete loss. Either way it was going to be a new beginning. This was going to end and the whole family was going to be free at last.
She grabbed her laptop and went into the little garden area that Caleb had made for Jordan. It had always been here but this seemed to fit Jordan more. In the corner they had put up a little studio so she could paint when the mood hit. Jenny loved Jordan’s paintings. Something that was now gone forever. Maybe her sister would make her new ones for her new house. She went over and looked at some of the prints that were lying against the wall. They were beautiful. One was of a cabin on a lake. The snow had started to cover the ground and the whole scene was peaceful. Another one was of a light house and a little girl playing in the front of it. Chasing a butterfly. On closer look that little girl looked like Candy. But not her niece Candy the friend that they had lost all of those years ago. Jo must have been thinking about her when she was painting this. There was so much that Candy was missing. There wasn’t a day that she didn’t miss her or the Watson’s. They were family to her as much as her parents were. At least they were all up in one place now. Probably all looking down at them watching over them. She had to smile at that. They would all be together again once day. She just didn’t want it to be too soon and if that made her selfish then be it. All of their lives had just started to become what they were meant to be.
She turned with a smile on her face and saw Brent standing in the doorway just staring at her like he had never seen her before. She wondered what was going through his mind. If he had changed his mind about them. This time she wasn’t going to let it surprise her. She was going to guard her heart. Or at least that’s what her mind was telling her. Her heart had a different idea all together. It felt like it was going to beat out of her chest. It leaped with anticipation at what Brent was going to do. She swore that she was going to have a heart attack if her heart beat any faster. But she had to play this cool. She was not going to let herself get hurt again. She didn’t think she would be able to hold herself together this time if that happened.
“Good morning Brent.” Jenny said with a smile thought it was guarded.
“Morning.” he just continued to stare at her.
“Is there something wrong Brent?”
“No just taking in the most beautiful picture I could ever think of. With the sunlight coming in the window just right. And what you’re wearing. I’ve taken your photos quite a few times but this is just so different.”
“I don’t understand Brent. What are you talking about I don’t look any different.” Jenny said not quite sure where this was going.
“I’m able to look at you and know that if you forgive me I can spend the rest of my life with you. I have been so stupid and wasted so much time that we could already have what my brother and your sisters have.” Brent said walking over to her. Taking her in his arms. She felt like she was on some kind of movie set and soon the director was going to yell cut and Brent would go back to his old self. “Jenny I could get lost in your eyes forever. Please forgive me baby. Let me make all of this up. I don’t want to waste any more time apart.” he said kissing her.
Jenny knew that she couldn’t be mad at him anymore and that he was telling her the truth. He did love her. This was her forever right here. No matter what they had been through. No matter how often he had run away from her she loved him. She always had and that was something that she wasn’t ever going to be able to change. She looked at Brent and in his eyes she could see it. They were a chocolate brown and they were filled for the first time with love for her. Something that she had begged to see for years now. And here it was right in front of her. Ready to take the leap. This time with no questions asked there would be no more running from him he was going to stay right here with her.
“Jen, please don’t be mad at me. I can’t stand you mad at me.” Brent begged her.
“No as much as I want to be mad at you I can’t be mad at you. I love you. I know that it’s taken you some time to realize that but that’s how it is. I love you and never want to be without you again. I just don’t think I can handle another rejection from you.” Jenny explained.
“I know that I have hurt you. More than anyone deserves to be hurt. And I will make it up to you for the rest of my life. I will never hurt you again.” Brent said gently caressing her face.
He loved her more than he thought was possible. He should have listened to everyone a long time ago. He took her in his arms and just held her there. Taking in the scent of her. He didn’t ever want this to go away. He wanted this to be his forever now. He wanted to move on with his life and he wanted her in it with him. He needed her to trust him fully. She was so perfect in his arms. He felt her sigh and somehow knew everything would be okay. When she pulled back she looked into his eyes. Everything that she had ever wanted was there. All the love that she had dreamed of was right there at her fingertips. This was what she had wished for all those years and it was finally here. She now knew what Jordan and Jerrica felt. His hands were so gentle. She loved the feel of them. And knowing now that she never had to wish for this again made her want to cry. Soon she knew once this was over she would be able to have the life that she wanted always. Things would be the way it was supposed to be.
“Baby? Why are you crying? Are you hurting?” Brent asked suddenly alarmed at her reaction.
“No these are happy tears. I have waited for this for so long. To see the love in your eyes. Something that had been missing. And it’s now there.” she smiled up at him.
“It’s always going to be there Jenny. I think it always was. I was just afraid of it. You know how we Watson men are. We tend to run from our problems.” he smiled back at her.
Everything was going to be okay. This was what she now knew. All they had to do was getting rid of this last threat and then they could go on and spend the rest of their lives together. They would be able to get on with their lives. Have kids, grow old together. This was all she had ever wanted and now it was with in her reach. She couldn’t believe it.
He watched them through the window. It looked like Brent had finally come under their spell too. He felt sorry for the men in their lives. But soon he would have that taken care of. Soon they will be able to see what kind of evil these women are. And he and his brothers were just trying to do this family a favor. He shook his head. This was going to have to end soon or he was going to blow his cover. He walked into the kitchen to talk to Caleb. And be a friend to him. It made his skin crawl to think that he had to be nice to these women. But just for a little longer. He took a deep breath and put a smile on his face. He kept telling himself that he could do this for just a little bit longer.
Chapter Six
Brent knew that Jordan had been cooking breakfast so he pursued her to go with him into the kitchen. At the table their family sat. Like it should be. Jake and Jerrica with little Edward. Jordan was getting little Candy settled for her breakfast. Sasha was helping with little Timmy. He looked over at Wayne and his brother Caleb. They were in a discussion with some of the men from the PD. And Caleb didn’t look happy in the least bit. Something had happened and he wondered what it was. But it wasn’t his place to ask. They would tell him once the kids were out of the room. That was the one thing. The kids didn’t need to know that something was going on. They needed to be protected from this as much as they could be. He watched as Jake kissed both Eddie and Jerrica and walked over to Caleb and Wayne. This wasn’t good. Even the girls looked scared. He saw Jenny give Jordan a look and all Jordan did was shake her head. Yep definitely something going on.
Jordan sat the food on the table and tried to act like this was any other day even though it wasn’t. This was far from normal. He looked at Jenny and knew that she felt the same way. But for the kids they would make it normal. Caleb said something to the men from the station and the nodded their heads and left. Wayne, Jake, and Caleb put a smile on their face and came over and joined their family.
The talk around the table was light. What everyone was going to do during the day. Brent thought that maybe he would help lift everyone’s spirits. He wanted to ask Jenny to marry him and now that he knew she would never say no this would be the perfect time to do it. He excused himself from the table and went into his room to get the ring that he had bought so long ago. It was on one of his trips to Ireland. He had seen this ring and knew that Jenny would love it but at the time they weren’t really seeing each other. But he hoped that maybe one day down the road that it would happen. And here it was. He put the ring in his pocket and went back to the table. The conversation was still going on. Talking about nothing and everything at the same time.
“Since we have everyone here I would like to ask Jenny a question in front of everyone.” Brent said pulling Jenny out of her seat. He knew in her eyes she already knew what she he was going to ask. “Jenny I know that I’ve messed up with you so bad. And the fact that you are still willing to give me a chance proves what kind of woman you are. Would you make this fool the proudest person in the world and marry me? Be my wife and forever let me prove to you how much I love you?” Brent said getting down on one knee.
“Yes.” was all Jenny could say as the tears rolled out her eyes.
“Auntie Jenny why are you crying?” Little Candy asked from her seat worried about her aunt.
“Because I’m just so happy sweetheart.” she smiled at the little girl.
Brent took her into his arms and soon they were surrounded by their family. Each giving them their congratulations. The problem at hand was temporarily pushed to the back burner. The girls was making a big deal about the ring while the men were telling Brent it was about time that he did something. It was the happiest moment in Brent’s life in a very long time. He had been so miserable running from his feelings. How stupid was he? That was going to be the question that he asked himself for years to come.
He looked at her once again and this time she was his for the rest of their lives. He was going to give her the fairytale wedding that he knew she dreamed of. This was going to be perfect. He just knew this. After all of this was over with they would be able to live happily ever after and not look back. They all sat back down to breakfast. For the first time in a very long time things were happy again but they knew that it was going to be short lived.
After breakfast Jenny went into the garden to get her laptop. She did have work to do and even though she was excited about what had just happened, she needed to focus on the next step in her life. Both in her personal and professional life. She opened her email expecting that she would have heard from her old manager by now but like every other day she hadn’t. Maybe Angie just respected her choice to come home for good this time. It wasn’t like Angie but it could happen right. She opened an odd email not thinking about it and for a moment she didn’t understand it. But soon it hit her. It was the same man that had blew up her house. How did he get her email address?
Jenny,
I can see now where my brothers
Got lost in what they were supposed to do.
All three of you girls would make a man wish that
He was next to you for the rest of his life. And Poor
Caleb and Jake had fallen for your sister’s evil.
And now it looks like you have gotten your claws
Into Brent. But soon they will see that I was only
Trying to help them. And this world will be rid of your kind of evil.
And those poor little ones will be out from under
The evil. Daddy was right about your parents.
Nothing good could ever come of them. My brothers
Should have stuck with the plan and then it wouldn’t
Have been left all too me and I wouldn’t be alone.
But that’s beside the point
Once this is done my family could rest in peace
While yours will burn in hell for all eternity.
I hope you and your sisters are ready to die
Cause it’s going to happen sooner than any of you think.
Jenny just sat there staring at the screen. Somehow this made whatever was going on more real. And it seemed that it gave her more clues. This had started with her parents. It gave her somewhere to start. But she knew that she also had to show Caleb and the others. She walked into the kitchen and only found Jerrica in there. It seemed like everyone else was out somewhere doing other things.
Jerrica turned around and saw Jenny’s face. She stopped what she was doing and was by her side in an instant. Jenny didn’t realize that she was shaking until she heard Jerrica telling her to sit down. She felt the tears falling down now too. She had always thought in the back of her mind that her mom and dad’s accident was more than an accident. Something was too fishy for it to be that simple. But now she knew that they had been killed and that didn’t make her feel any better at all. It made her feel worse. She heard Jerrica on the phone with Jake telling him that they needed to come home now. Then she sat next to Jenny and waited for her to stop crying. Jerrica had never been this patient. But ever since Jake had finally found her there was a peace about her. She loved her sister so much.
“Jen? What’s the matter? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” Jerrica said to her.
“I got this in my email.” Jenny said turning the computer where her sister could see it. And she watched Jerrica face as she read the email. “I always thought mama and daddy were killed. And he just proves it. What did daddy do that was so evil Jerrica? Daddy didn’t have an evil bone in his body. And why do they think that we are evil. I just don’t understand that.”
“Jenny first of all these men are crazy. They don’t know what they are talking about. But this also gives us something to go on.” Jerrica tried to reassure her sister.
“I know but that doesn’t make me feel any better. This guy means business. I’m not so much scared for me. But you and Jordan. Both of you have been through too much. You don’t need to go through anymore.” Jenny said in a shaky voice.
“We are strong because of the people in our lives Jen. Because you raised us that way. Yes we have gone through a lot but that doesn’t mean we want you to go through it. Everyone should be here soon. I called them and told them something had happened. Brent was at the office and he should be here any second if I know him. The others took the kids out and went shopping. I stayed behind because as much as you don’t want it we don’t want you to be alone.” Jerrica smiled at her sister.
“Thank you Jerrica. I’m glad that you and Jake are here. Even my little Eddie brings a smile to my face.”
“He’s like his father in so many ways.” Jerrica smiled.
“Jerrica I feel like there is something that you are hiding. Is there? Are you okay? Is Eddie okay?” Jenny asked fearing the worst.
“I’m fine and Eddie is great. Jake wants us to go to England for a while. Not permanently or anything just to go see where he came from. But I’m scared. I’ve never been out of the country. And even when I was running I was never that far from you and Jordan.” Jerrica said worried.
“Honey you have to go. It would be wonderful for Eddie to see where his father came from. Where he grew up. I think it would be good for you too. You will love England.” Jenny said excited for her sister.
“We’re not going to go through till this is over. I could never leave you when you needed me the most Jenny. I want to make sure that this is over.” Jerrica took a moment to look at her sister’s face and knew that she was up to something. “Jenny want is going through that head of yours?”
“It’s just a thought, and if Jake doesn’t want to know that I will not be offended in any shape or form. How about when this is over with we all go on a vacation? Me and Brent, Jake and you, Wayne and Sasha, and Caleb and Jordan. And of course the little ones. And while were over there we have the wedding. I will have everyone that I need over there and maybe we will be able to keep the press out of it and we would be able to get married in secret.” Jenny smiled.
“Jen that would be so perfect. And I’m sure that Jake won’t mind. I know that Jake’s estate in England is beautiful and huge. It has a big garden in the back. It’s like Jordan’s but ten times as big. I’ve only seen pictures.” Jerrica gushed.
“And we all need a vacation. It seems like the last ten years or so we’ve had a target on our backs. And to be able to relax and not have to watch our backs is going to be such a relief. Our family can start a new chapter in their lives. One that might include more kids.” Jerrica smiled.
“Jerrica? Is there something else that you haven’t told me?” Jenny said picking up something.
“I don’t know yet and I don’t want to jinx it. But I don’t know if I can keep it secret any longer. I think I’m pregnant. I’m not one hundred percent sure yet so I don’t want Jake to know. I also don’t want to rub it in Jordan’s face. I know they have told her that she shouldn’t have anymore.” Jerrica said with concern.
“If you think that Jordan will be mad at you. You’re wrong. She had Candy and if that’s all she’s going to be able to have I’m sure that she will be okay with that. Plus there’s other ways that they can have kids. And I’m sure that they have talked about it. And it’s not like you’re going to have an easy time either. You had a hard time with Eddie. The doctors were concerned with you also. It’s not like when you walked away from the accident that you were in good as new. It left its mark.”
“I know that Jenny. But I was lucky and surviving whatever was given to me. I know that it was supposed to kill me. But it didn’t and I’m still here. Yes I’m weaker but not weak enough. I am under strict doctor watch. They know that my heart has been weakened. They never did find out what type of drug that was given to me. Or why I had the reaction I had to it. Just please be careful. This guy that is after us now we don’t know if he’s the one that made the drugs. If he gives them to you he could know what kind of dose will kill you now.” Jerrica said worried.
“I know that. I just want you to be careful and happy. I can’t lose my sisters.”
“And we can’t lose you.”
“I know that. Please just be careful.”
Jerrica just hugged her sister. Jenny was always so concerned about everyone else but never about her. But everyone was worried about Jenny this time. Jerrica didn’t know why but in the pit of her stomach she felt like something bad was going down. And she didn’t know if this family was going to make it this time. But she had to keep on a front for Jenny. She knew that Caleb, Jake, Brent, and Wayne were doing everything that they could. But she knew that no matter how many precautions that they took it still could be dangerous. And Jenny could be taken away from them. Jordan and she had escaped with their lives because the brothers had been in love with them. And that love was blind. But this guy hated them with everything in his being. And that was going to be what might end this family. But she couldn’t think like that. She wasn’t going to let any harm come to her family. She heard the front door open and put a smile on her face. No use others worrying about it too.
Brent found Jenny and Jerrica in the kitchen sitting at the table. His heart dropped when he saw the look on Jenny’s face he knew she was scared. Something that she didn’t let people see. He went to her and pulled her into his arms. She had taken his heart in her hands. He just hoped that she was gentle with it because this was it for him. He was hers. And it was about time. Or so everyone around him kept telling him. He looked over Jenny’s head and looked at Jerrica. She looked like she had gotten caught with her hand in the cookie jar.
“Okay what have you two been up to?” Brent said looking down at Jenny.
“Just girl stuff. What would we be up to?” Jenny smiled up at him sweetly.
“I don’t know that’s what scares me.” Brent said as the front door opened again.
“Jen, what’s going on? We all got a 911 from Jerrica.” Jordan said putting some bags up on the counter.
“Let’s wait for everyone else.”
Jordan just nodded and looked at Caleb who had Candy in his arms. Poor little angel was sleeping soundly. They took her into her room and laid her down while waiting for Jake, Sasha, and Wayne. Once they got there the house was full of hustle and bustle once again. No more solitude. They sat down at the kitchen table and she showed everyone the email that she had gotten. Jake had her print it out and give it to him so he could somehow analyze it. Jenny updated everyone on what her dad’s old assistant had said and how she was going to send some old files of her dads. And that they should maybe start going through those when they get here. There had been no new leads as to who this could be. Whoever it was they were good at hiding and keeping what they were doing quiet. They had did some research and Michael and Josh’s father was one of the cases that the girls dad had been the prosecutor in. so that ties everything in but the fact that this man claimed that he was a brother but they couldn’t find anything on another child. This was getting stranger and stranger the further that they dived into it.
Once everything was said and done everyone got up from the table and started on various projects. Sasha, Jordan and Jerrica all stayed in the kitchen to start making lunch. Jenny took Brent back into the garden. She wanted to talk to him about England before she asked Jake. She knew that Brent didn’t care but she wanted to keep him in on the plans. Then everyone was going to have to start making arrangements to go over there.
“What’s the matter Jen?” Brent asked once they got to the garden.
“Nothing is the matter. I was talking to Jerrica earlier. And had a thought about the wedding. If you could wait till this was over would you be willing to have it at Jake’s estate over there. Jerrica says that he has a beautiful place full of gardens and I think that it would be a good break for us to start our new beginning. For the whole family to start over.” Jenny explained.
“You know I don’t care where we get married. As long as we get married. I will follow you to the ends of the earth. I hope that you know that.” Brent kissed her.
“I know that. I just wanted to make sure that you were okay with it. I don’t want to leave you in the dark any longer. Let’s tell everyone at lunch. That way there will at least be a silver lining to this dark cloud that is hanging over us.” Jenny said laying her head against his shoulder.
“Of course. What do you want to do until then? I’m not going back to work.”
“I have some paper work to go through. Is there anything that you need to work on that you can from home? We can go in the living room and work. And be around the family. I just need them around me right now. I’m trying not to be but I’m scared. I don’t like to admit that and you’re the only one that I’m going to admit it too.” Jenny said.
“I know you are and to tell you the truth I’m a little scared also. But we can’t dwell on that or he wins and that is the last thing I’m going to let him do is win. He’s going to go down with his brothers and his father.” Brent assured her.
“I know I also know that he’s smart and I have a bad feeling. I don’t know if we’re going to make it this time.” Jenny said
“Jenny you’ve got to have faith in this family. We’re stronger than you want to believe. Just like they say what doesn’t kill us makes us strong. When most families would have fallen apart ours is closer than ever. We’ve even acquired a few extras. This family will make it thorough anything Jen. As long as we stick together.” Brent said kissing her on the head.
She knew that he was right. That she needed to understand that this family had come through worse. She just couldn’t help but think this was something worse. She knew it in her gut. She hated to be played like this. She just wanted it to be over with. Not to play some cat and mouse game that this guy was playing.
They went into the living room and did the paperwork that they needed to do and watched her sisters as they took care of the kids. Maybe sometime in the future she would have the chance to take care of an innocent little one. She would be able to take care of someone. She looked over and Brent and noticed that he had his camera in hand and doing what he always did. She knew that they would be good pictures too. He was always good at that. And she noticed when he was having trouble with a problem that’s when he picked up his camera it seemed to make him think some.
What she didn’t notice was that there was someone else taking pictures of her. Someone with intent of ending her life and ending it soon. He didn’t know if he could take this anymore. His hands itched to be around her throat. But he needed a distraction. He knew how to get the guys out of the house but not the ladies. They were sticking to her like glue. Then a thought occurred to him. Maybe he had enough poison to do all of the girls. He knew it wouldn’t be a lethal dose but enough to put them out of commission for a while and take the guys focus off of Jenny and on them. Then later it would make it easier to kill the rest of them. He would even kill Sasha if he had to. He wasn’t beyond that. The way he saw it she was just as bad as the rest of them. As the new plan started to form he smiled. This was going to be the best yet. He had a new bounce in his step as he walked away. He was going to have more fun than he had first thought.
Jenny looked out the window thinking that she was being watched. But nobody was there. She turned back to Brent and watched as he took pictures of the kids. Then he turned the camera of her. She was used to it but this seemed different. It wasn’t for any type of cover or publicity shot. This was just having fun. Something that she hadn’t done much of. She didn’t know how to act with this. She just smiled shyly and playfully at him as he took her pictures. He loved it. This was a way that Jenny had never been photographed before. And she was so comfortable in front of the camera. He was going to have to get these developed soon. He wanted to see these in print.
Jordan came into the living room and told everyone that lunch was ready. They all gathered around the table to eat as a family. The talk was easy and light. As they didn’t want the kids to worry about what was going on. They were too young to have to worry about the grown up stuff.
“So Jenny, Erica here has told me you would like to borrow something.” Jake smiled
“Yes, I’ve talked to Brent about this. I know that you want to take Jerrica and Eddie back to England for a bit after this is over. I had a thought and don’t think that you have to say yes to this. I was thinking that maybe we could use your estate for our wedding. Have the whole family over there.” Jenny asked
“That sounds like a wonderful. And I don’t mind one bit sharing my place with you guys. I think it would be perfect. It would help Erica adjust a bit.” Jake smiled at Jerrica.
“Then it’s all set. When this is over. And it will be soon. All of us are going on a little trip out of the country. And you can stay as long as you like.” Jerrica smiled. “That means you and Sasha.” Jenny said looking at both of them.
“Of course were going to be there. You are like family to us.” Sasha beamed.
“While we’re at it. Jake I have something to tell you. I think I’m pregnant again. I’m not one hundred percent sure yet. But I’m pretty sure that I am.” Jerrica just watched his face.
“What?” Jake said stunned
“I think I’m pregnant.” Jerrica smiled loving the confused look on her face.
“Pregnant? Another child?” Jake said not knowing how to react.
“Yes baby another one.”
Jake was ecstatic about the news. Then he looked at Jordan and Caleb. He knew that they couldn’t have anymore. Even though they wanted more the doctors advised against. It wasn’t fair that he was able to have more and his best friend and brother wasn’t.
“Cal, Jo. I know that this may be hard for you.” Jake said not wanting to look them in the eye.
“Jake don’t even say it. We are fine with Candy. We know that there is no more children that I can carry but there are other ways. No way am I going to be mad at you for having another one. I’m happy for you and the new little one to our family. More to spoil. And more playmates for Candy.” Jordan smiled a true smile.
“Thank you for saying that. I think we both needed to hear that. A baby? Are you serious?” Jake had to ask again unsure that this wasn’t a dream.
“Yes. A baby. I still have to go to the doctors.”
“Erica this means that you have to stay in the background. I can’t have this manic getting you because you were trying to be a hero.” Jake said seriously.
“I know that Jake but I’m not going to let him get my sisters either. I’ll be fine. I promise.” she kissed him knowing that she couldn’t be sure.
Jenny watched as Jake took Jerrica into his arms. She was happy for the both of them. But this gave her more reason to flush this guy out and not let him hurt her family. She would somehow bait him out into the open and then she would take care of him herself. She didn’t care if she didn’t make it or not. It was more important that her sisters and their families got the peace that they deserved. The kids didn’t deserve this. They were little innocents. That didn’t deserve to have their lives end up in terror like this.
Brent watched his brother closely. He knew that Caleb wanted more kids but the doctors told Jordan that if she did have anymore then it could kill her. And in Caleb’s mind Jordan was the most important person in his life. So he begged her not to have anymore and put her life in danger. He was happy enough with Candy. They didn’t need to press their luck any more. She had agreed. She didn’t want to leave either one of them either. But he could see the sadness in Caleb’s eyes even though he had a smile on his face. Caleb would never express anger for this. He looked over at Jenny and knew that there was something brewing in her head too.
She didn’t want something to happen to her sisters. She wanted them to be happy and safe. Not having to worry about anything. She hoped that her father’s old files would bring some kind of light to this before someone got hurt. She looked up and noticed that Brent was looking at her. She smiled sweetly at him and knew that he didn’t believe her for a minute. But he didn’t know what she was up to either. And she planned to keep it that way until she was ready to take her plan in motion.
She started to turn to go back into the living room to get back to her work when the phone rang. At first she thought nothing of it but she heard the change in Jordan’s voice and knew that something wasn’t right. The look on Jordan’s face was one of confusion. Caleb was at her side in an instant and everyone was standing around waiting for the call to be over.
“Brent, Jen did either of you schedule a magazine shoot for today? Cassie just called and said that there was a reporter there wanting to interview Jenny.” Jordan said still looking at the phone.
“Yes there was a shoot scheduled. I forgot to cancel it. I’ll go and take care of it.” Brent said hating that he had to leave Jenny behind.
“Brent, Jake and Wayne and I are going to go with you to make sure everything is okay.” Caleb said looking at them.
“I’ll go with you. Everything here will be okay. The security system is fine and I need to pick up something there anyway.” Jerrica said when Jake started to protest.
“Okay but you’re not going anywhere without one of us. You three there are officers outside if something is looking funny. Call them even if you think it’s stupid.” Jake explained to them.
“We will Jake. Go everything will be okay. Caleb we know the drill.” Jordan said smiled at him. Knowing that he was going to be worrying.
“Okay baby. You guys just be careful.” Caleb said kissing Jordan and Candy. Giving one more look around and leaving.
Chapter Seven
Jenny knew that they were having a hard time leaving but it needed to be done. This might give her a chance to get done with what she needed to get done. She just needed to make sure that her sisters were out of harm’s way and the kids at that too. But she also knew that her sisters weren’t going to leave her alone either. She gave Brent a kiss good bye and assured him that she was going to be okay. He was very reluctant to leave but knew that he had to take care of something at the office. She smiled at him. Once the guys left the house Jordan and Sasha put the kids down for their naps and she went to do some more work. She loved just sitting in the garden and letting all the smells of the flowers wash over her. She opened her computer and started on some emails that she needed to do. She needed to email her old manager and let her know that she was no longer her manager. She knew that Angie would be mad but there was nothing else she could do. Her heart wasn’t in movies any longer. She wanted to be home and work with her family. And once this was all over it was going to be even better. She could only look forward to that if she didn’t it was going to swallow her up whole. And then she would be no good for her family.
He watched everyone leave. This might be the only chance that he had to get to the girls. His anger boiled when he saw that Jerrica was leaving with the others. But he still had three of them in there. That would just have to do. It was nice to be on the inside. He could get into where ever he needed to easily. He walked up to the door and tried to act normal. A small part of him felt guilty about what he was going to do. He liked this family but he needed to obey his father. He told the other officers to go ahead and take a break that he had this now. He just let himself into the house. Like always the girls greeted him like part of the family and he guessed in their eyes he was part of the family. A part of him felt guilty about what he was doing. But he had his family to consider. And maybe once he took care of this he would be able to live in peace along with his family that was dead.
“Carl what a surprise.” Jordan smiled sweetly at him.
“Hey Jo I was just stopping by to see if I could get some of those journals that Caleb had been talking about. See if it would help with the investigation.”
“Okay I think they are in his office. Can you give me a minute?” Jordan said heading in the direction of the office.
“Can I get you some coffee?” Sasha asked
“Sure that would be wonderful. So how do you like it up here in Colorado?” Carl said as he pulled out the needle to put into Sasha’s neck.
“I love it all the colors. I’ve been here a few times before. I love this new family that has adopted me.” She didn’t even see it coming.
Carl grabbed her from behind and slide the needle into her neck. She was out before she even had the chance to scream. He laid her on the kitchen floor with care. Then he went looking for Jordan. He passed by the garden and saw that Jenny was sitting at her laptop with the headphones in. She wouldn’t hear a thing; she didn’t even know that he was here. He smiled this was going to be easy to get to them. He walked into Caleb’s office and found Jordan going through a box.
“Need some help Jo?” Carl asked
“No I almost have them. Just had to see where Cal put them.” she said never turning around.
“Good.” He smiled as he pulled the syringe out of his pocket and let the needle sink into her arm.
She didn’t know what hit her. He could feel that she wanted to fight back but she didn’t have time to do it. He made sure that he had given her all of the meds that was in it and then gently laid her on the ground. Then he went on the hunt for Jenny. He found her again in the garden just sitting there with her headset in not thinking there wasn’t any danger to her. But she was wrong. He quietly walked up to her and pulled the needle out of his pocket. He let it sink into her neck since that was the only place that was visible. She was out before she even knew what had hit her. He saw the engagement ring on her hand and took it off leaving it on her computer. She wasn’t going to need that. And maybe it would give Brent some comfort.
He gently picked her up and carried her outside to his car. He laid her in the trunk of his car. Making sure that nobody would see him doing it. They would know it was him soon but he couldn’t have them knowing it now. He still had plans that he needed to do. He took the phone that he had taken from her pocket and left a nice little message for Brent. He just wished that he was around to see his face.
You thought you were smart
That you could find me
But in just one step
I took all your family
Jenny’s with me so no longer worry about her
Sasha and Jordan though
Are lying on the floor.
He threw the phone on the grass beside the car and got in. he didn’t know how much time he had before Brent came looking for Jenny. Jerrica he would get to later. Right now he was satisfied with how this was. He had already put the wheels in motion soon they would know who had betrayed them. He couldn’t wait to see what they did when that happened.
Brent heard the phone go off. He smiled when it was Jenny’s ringtone. He would have looked at it right away if Cassie hadn’t called his name. He took care of the question and then once again went to look at his phone. He clicked on Jenny’s name and as fast as his heart soared it turned to lead as he read the text. He took off in the direction that he knew Caleb was. He dialed Jenny’s number but it went to voicemail. That never was good she always answered her phone. He shouted for Caleb and was glad to see his brother turn around as soon as his name was called.
“What’s up Brent?” Caleb asked calmly.
“We have to leave now.” Brent said his voice in a panic.
“What’s wrong Brent?”
Brent didn’t even bother to answer that question. Just gave the phone to Caleb. He watched his brothers face as he read the message. Caleb was a moving faster than Brent had ever seen him move. And he knew it was because he was in fear of Jordan’s life. He pulled out his phone while he was at it and tried to call Jordan. But her phone went to voicemail. He called Jake and Wayne as he ran by them. They knew that something was wrong and feel in step with him. Jerrica was following as well. They had been a team for so long that they didn’t even need to communicate what was going on. They just knew that it was urgent. They all piled into his car. Caleb had Jerrica continue to call Jo while Wayne called Sasha. Brent tried to call Jenny. With every ring of the phone the bigger the lead grew in his chest. He knew that she was gone. But the bigger question was how she was gone. How did he get into the house when there was officers at the door?
Caleb ran every red light on the way to his house. Brent knew that he had Jake trying to get ahold of Carl but he wasn’t able to either. Something just seemed off about all of this. But he didn’t have the time. Once they pulled up outside Caleb’s house they all piled out of the car and ran up the sidewalk. Brent found Jenny’s phone as he was going to the door. He knew that it was hers because of the butterfly that Jordan had painted on it. He made sure to pick it up with a napkin not wanting to mess up any of the fingerprints that was on it. He heard the commotion in the house and ran inside.
He found Wayne on the floor beside Sasha gently shaking her. Begging her to wake up. Jake beside him reassuring him that she was going to be okay. And that their little girl was okay. He went in search of Caleb and found him in the office. Jordan in his arms. Looking so tiny.
“Brent she’s so still. I don’t think she’s breathing.” Caleb said looking lost.
“Cal, look at me.” Brent said as he tried to find a pulse. “Cal, she has a pulse. Look she’s breathing. It’s like she’s just sleeping.”
“She is. Candy? Where’s Candy and the other kids? Where’s Jenny?” Caleb asked going into cop mode.
“Jerrica with the kids. Jenny’s gone Cal he has her.” Brent said trying not to panic.
“What? Where’s Carl? Did someone call the EMT’s? Where’s the officers that was supposed to be here?” Caleb said his temper now getting the best of him.
“I’ll go check with Jake. Stay here.” Brent said getting up.
It was good that his brother was going into cop mode. It would help him to remain calm for Jordan and the kids. As he passed the playroom he heard the kids talking to Jerrica. There was sadness there. Something he knew all too well. But he couldn’t think about that. Right now Jordan and Sasha needed his help. He went into the kitchen, he still heard Wayne begging Sasha to wake up. He saw Jake on the phone. The anguish in Wayne’s eyes was almost unbearable. Sasha didn’t deserve this. And yet here she was laying on the ground. And now Jenny was god knows where and he was doing God knew what to her. Brent couldn’t think of that either. Or he would just sit down and cry. Jenny was strong. She would be able to buy them sometime.
In the back of his head he felt something trying to get his attention. But he pushed that back as well as he heard the sirens. He opened the door for them and watched as they went to each of the girls. They just looked like they were sleeping. No noticeable trauma and that was baffling everyone. They carefully loaded them into the ambulance while Jerrica, Brent, and Jake kept the kids occupied. They didn’t need to see their mothers like that. They would be scared. As the ambulance pulled away they got the kids ready for the hospital. Something was still nagging at Brent. He knew it was something important. Then out of the blue it hit him.
“Oh my God! This was part of his plan all along. His plan was to get Jenny.” Brent said out loud.
“Are you okay?” Jake asked.
“He planned this all along and we just played into his hand. This was meant to be a distraction. Keeping our attention away from the fact that Jenny’s in danger. He has a longer period of time to get away. And one more thing. Have you got ahold of Carl?” Brent said not wanting to think that way.
“No we haven’t. Of course I haven’t tried to call him. But he would be here by now.” Jake said as two officers ran into the house.
“What happened?”
“Where were you two?” Jake asked as calmly as he could.
“Chief said that we could go get some coffee or something. He said he was going to watch over them.” they said confused.
“Chief? You mean Carl? He was here?” Jake asked.
“Yes.”
“Brent I think you may be right. I need you two to put out an APB on Carl and his car. I don’t want to think that he would do this but I don’t know what else to think.
“Are you saying that something went down while the chief was here?”
“Jenny is missing and Jo and Sasha are unconscious when we got here. It’s looking like he might have had something to do with this. This is going to kill Caleb.” Jake said as he pulled out his phone.
Brent hated this; Carl was like one of the family. Brent couldn’t remember any time that he wasn’t with the family. For special occasions Christmases he was the one that even found Jenny. It made Brent’s blood boil thinking about it. How could he be so cruel like that? What exactly did this family do to make him hate them so long? And if this did start with their parents that was over twenty years of hatred building up. He couldn’t think like that. Jenny was strong. She would be able to calm him down. He paced as Jake called to Caleb on the phone. He could image what his brother was thinking right now. He was going to feel betrayed and hurt. And if he got his hands on Carl first then he would kill him. But Brent wasn’t going to let him do that because Brent wanted to get to him first. And then this family wouldn’t ever have to worry about anything again. They could live in peace. But he had to make sure that nothing happened to anyone. Because then they would be devastated. He didn’t know if they could go on if something happened and someone in this family was gone. Then all of this won’t be worth it.
He watched as Jake came back in the house. He didn’t look too happy. He too didn’t want to believe that Carl was in on this. But the evidence was stacking up against him. Brent was sure that Caleb made Jake start doing a deep dig into Carl’s life. If anyone could find Carl he knew Jake could. He was the computer geek of the bunch. There was nobody that could compare to him on this. He watched as Jake got off of his phone and ran his hands through his hair
“How can it be Carl? How can he do something to this family? Cal is livid. If he finds him first he will rip his heart out.” Jake said with the same feelings.
“We won’t let it get to that. He’s going to pay for what he has done to this family. Everything that has happened to this family has been because of him. I don’t think that the other two would have been smart enough if that was the case.” Brent said.
“I agree. I wonder if she was wearing her pendent today.” Jake asked knowing that it could lead them right to her in a matter of minutes.
“I’ll go and check. She was keeping her things in my room.” Brent said remember that he had given her this room and he took the couch.
Jake just nodded and went into his room to get his trusty computers. He would have a command center set up in no time. Carl didn’t realize who he was messing with. When Brent walked into his room he could still smell her. The scent of her perfume. He picked up one of her shirts that she had laying on the chair and picked it up put it to his nose. He missed her so much. He wanted her here now. He wanted to know that she was okay. He couldn’t let himself break down now. He had to be strong for her. That was the only way that he was going to find her before it was too hate. Once Caleb knew that Jordan was okay he would become a hunter. And the last thing that Brent wanted his brother to have on his conscience was the murder of someone. Not that he didn’t want to do it himself.
Brent looked around and didn’t find the pendant. So that must mean that she was wearing it. He just wondered if it was still activated. But there was still a chance that she was out there and maybe they would have her back before long. Surely Carl wouldn’t know about that. But of course he probably did. He knew all of their secrets it seemed. And of course why wouldn’t he. He was part of the family. He wanted to throw something but he knew that might upset the kids. He was just so frustrated and he needed something to do. But he just didn’t know what to do. There wasn’t much that he could do. Once they got an idea where she was then he would be able to do something. He walked into the garden room and knew that she had been here. This was the last place that she had been. Her perfume still lingered here. He looked over at the laptop that was still opened and see the ring that he had given her not too long ago. It was his promise that he was going to stay with her. Now she was gone. He wasn’t here to help her. He picked it up and closed his hand around it. His anger for this man multiplying by the minute.
He walked back into the living room and watched Jake work feverishly for the next few minutes. He knew that if Jake could find her this minute he would. He let him know that her pendent was no longer at the house so it must be on her. Jake just grunted a reply and kept on working. He went into the nursery where Jerrica was with the kids. She had finally got them to settle down a little bit. They wanted their mom. Kids knew when something was wrong. Jerrica looked up at Brent and he could see the tears in her eyes.
“Brent, is there any news?”
“No I haven’t heard anything. I’m sure that they are okay.” Brent said trying to calm her fears.
“I would go but I know that Jake won’t let me out of his sight. Can you please go down to the hospital and check on them. Jake’s going to be in his own little world and I know that you want to be with your brother and not sitting around here waiting for something to happen. We’ll find Jenny I will keep you posted on what’s going on here.” Jerrica promised.
“Okay. Please watch yourself. I can guarantee that he’s not too happy that you got away. And he’s going to be searching for a way to get to you too. He’s done it once or rather his brother has.” Brent said
“I know Brent and trust me he’s not going to get past me this time. I’m sure Jake has the security on this house to a major point. I just have to know Jo and Sasha are okay. Especially Sasha she didn’t deserve this. It’s not her fight.”
Brent looked at Jerrica one more time and nodded his head. She was right if he couldn’t be out there looking for Jenny then he wanted to be with his brother. He was sure that Caleb and Wayne was going out of their minds with worry. He grabbed his keys and making sure that the front door was locked up tight he went out the back and made sure that the door was locked behind him. He didn’t need to take the chance.
The whole ride over to the hospital his mind was tortured with the thought of what this manic was doing to Jenny. What she must have been thinking. He should have made her go with him. Then maybe she would have been okay and here with him. This was all his fault. He had let his guard down and now she was gone. He had to put that out of his mind or he was going to drive himself crazy. He had other things to focus on. He pulled up into the hospital parking lot and parked his car. He braced himself for the chaos that he was sure was going on inside. The force wouldn’t know what to do now because of what Carl had done to them. He had betrayed everyone. There would be a huge manhunt. It baffled Brent how he thought he could get away with this. He must have thought that everyone was stupid.
He walked into the ER and found Caleb and Wayne sitting there in silence just looking at the doors. Almost like they were waiting for the doctor or the girls to come through. And he couldn’t blame them. Caleb looked up at Brent. His eyes begging him to make it all go away. To bring Jordan back to him. But there was nothing that Brent could do. They all had got to lax with everything and didn’t think that they were being betrayed by someone within the circle of the family.
“Cal how’s the girls?” Brent asked sitting next to his brother.
“I don’t know Brent. The doc hasn’t’ came out and told us yet. They didn’t wake up at all. And yet there is nothing that shows that he hurt them or how.” Caleb said wondering what had happened to his beloved Jordan.
“Have you ever thought that maybe he drugged them?” Brent offered up.
“What do you mean?” Caleb asked.
“Remember when he had drugged Jerrica? Maybe he gave that same type of drug to the girls.” Brent explained.
“That’s worse. I don’t know if Jo can handle anything more that’s done to her. I know she doesn’t want to admit it but she’s not as strong as she likes to think. And look at what that drug did to Jerrica. What if it does that to Jo or Jenny?” Caleb said new fear in his eyes.
“I’ve thought about that. Jo has overcome everything that these brothers have thrown at her. And she’s strong. Jenny is a fighter too. Jerrica didn’t bow down to this. And Sasha is one of the four strongest women I know. I don’t know even a man that is as strong as them.” Brent said trying to sound convincing.
“Okay for now we have no other choice but to believe that. Has Jake made any head way with finding Jenny?” Caleb said switching back into his cop mode.
“No when I left his face was plastered in his computer. There was nothing to do there and Jerrica was worried about her sister and Sasha so she begged me to come here. I wanted to anyway. I wanted to be with you. Until we find out how Jordan is and how to start even looking for Jenny.”
“I’m glad that you are here.” Caleb said as the doctor came out
“Marshal Family.” the doctor said. Caleb and Wayne stood up. “Both of them are in stable condition. Though they are still unconscious. We can’t figure out what happened to them. There is no evidence of trauma of any kind. We are running a toxic screen to see if they were given a drug.”
“Can we see them doc? Just to let them know that we are here.” Caleb asked.
“Of course but only for a few minutes. They need their rest if they are going to fight off whatever this is.”
Brent watched as Wayne and Caleb went into the ER following the doctor. He decided to stay out in the waiting room to give them some privacy. He didn’t want to see Jordan and Sasha that still ever again. That just wasn’t them when they were so full of energy. Always running to keep up with the kids even with all of Jordan’s health problems from the last attack she was able to keep up with the best of them. He wondered just how much this was going to affect her. And Jenny if he had given her the same thing how was it going to affect her.
They already knew how Jerrica was affected by it. He was afraid if she was given it again it would kill her and especially since she was pregnant. Brent didn’t know how much more he could take just sitting here. He wanted to get Jenny back and get her better and marry her. He wanted life to be normal again. He didn’t want this to have happened. But it did. And he was going to have to handle it and be strong for her once they did find her. He got up and started pacing the waiting room. Officers came in to see how Jordan was doing but he didn’t know who he could trust and who he couldn’t so he didn’t say much of anything. He just wanted everyone to go away. He hated the feeling of betrayal. This was a new feeling for Brent. He saw Caleb through the windows of the doors that lead to the backrooms. He motioned for him to come back there. Brent was more than happy to do it.
“What’s up?”
“Who’s all out there?” Caleb asked.
“I’m not sure some guys on the force. If you’re asking if Carl is out there the answer is no.”
“I’m going to kill him. Jo has been through enough and he was there for it. I can’t believe that he would betray us like this.” Caleb said though there was a deadly sense of calm in his voice. It scared Brent.
“How’s Jo?” Brent said worried about his sister in law.
“She’s starting to come around. She still groggy and can’t move. It’s almost like the drug that was given to Jake back in Texas. But we don’t know the long term effects that it has on her.” Caleb said with a lot of concern
“I know but for right now you have to believe that she’s going to be okay. Jordan would want that. But we have to find Jenny too. If she was give the same drug. We don’t know how it’s going to affect her either. This was all a distraction to take the attention away from Jenny being taken and it’s working.” Brent said.
“I know this Brent I really do but I don’t want to leave Jo vulnerable. I can’t lose her. I’ve almost lost her once. And if he goes after Jerrica. I know he’s got to be very angry about not being about to get to her either.” Caleb said knowing no that there was nothing that any of them wouldn’t do to keep these girls safe.
“I doubt that he will be able to get to her now. She’s got another little one to worry about. And I know that she can take care of herself. Even after everything that she’s been through. Jake and she have been training like crazy since she was taken. There is nothing that she can’t do. And you have to believe that about Jenny too. She’s smart. She’s going to find some way to either get out of there or tell us where she is at. Look at Jerrica she was able to get us on the right track when she was taken. They are very resourceful. Trust that Jenny will be able to do that also.” Caleb said
“I know and I’m trying to I just know that this person is a manic. I want her here with me. I want to marry her. I have been so stupid and wasted so much time. Now I don’t know if I’m going to get my chance to prove myself to her.” Brent said letting the feelings finally come through.
“Brent I know that you’re scared but you can’t think that way. Right now there is nothing we can do. We don’t even know where to start. Jake is the best at finding people. Look how he found Jerrica without even looking. And she’s good at hiding and blending in.” Caleb reminded him.
“I know and when I left home he was like a manic on the computer. I’ve never seen him like that. But then I’ve never seen him in that mode either.” Brent smiled sadly.
“Yes he is very intense. But that is why he is so good and a lot of departments use him. He will find Jenny. He’s her best chance. Why don’t you come back with us? I don’t want you out there if the media gets this. They are going to go crazy with this. Their sweetheart is once again attacked. We’re going to have them coming out of the woodwork. And when they find out Jenny is gone. I don’t want to think about that. That’s going to be a mess.” Caleb said as he started walking down the hallway towards Jordan and Sasha’s room.
Brent followed his brother. He wasn’t prepared to see Sasha and Jordan so still. He could tell that they were both fighting it to move. They knew that Jenny was gone and they were worried about their kids. Caleb rushed over to Jordan and tried to get her to calm down. The more that she fought it the more in might affect her. And right now they didn’t want that. They needed to focus on Jenny and they would be able to do that when the girls were out of the woods. Then there would be no stopping them. And since he hadn’t taken out any of the guys he was going to be in trouble. Brent continued to watch Caleb try to get Jordan to calm down and thought about Jenny. He just wanted some kind of word that she was okay. The more that he watched Jo the more he was scared. She was so pale. Never in his life had he seen her this pale. Even when they almost lost her six years before she wasn’t this pale. They had to get this over with and soon.
******
Jenny slowly woke up. She didn’t know where she was. The last thing that she remembered was sitting in the garden in Jordan’s house and looking at her ring then it goes black. She tried to look around but it was dark. She tried to feel her way around but she couldn’t move. She could feel the panic start to rise. And the tears on her face. But no matter how much she tried to move she couldn’t. It was like she was paralyzed. She closed her eyes and tried to let her mind see for her. It almost felt as if she was in a box. The box was on the move. The question was to where? Where was she right now? How she was going to get away? She was sure that her family was going crazy right about now with this. Jo and Sasha had been at the house with her. That brought on new set worries for her. Had someone done something to them? And Jerrica where was she? Jenny had so many questions but no answers. She closed her eyes. She was smarter than this person was. He wasn’t going to get the upper hand on her. Once she calmed down she was able to feel the movement. She could hear the crunch of the tires and knew that she was in a car. She tried to listen to noises that passed put it was so quiet it was almost as if nothing was around. She heard someone talking but again she knew it was just him or the radio he probably thought that she was still out. If she could just get her body to work with her she would give him a surprise when he went to open the trunk of the car.
She closed her eyes and willed her body to calm down and to fight this stuff. She thought about the upcoming wedding that was going to happen with that. How they were going to plan it. She knew what she wanted. She wanted to be able to let butterflies go. Showing their new beginning together. She even had a few designs in mind. She wanted all her sisters in it. Even Sasha. They would all have different colored shoes and dresses. Even the girls are going to be in it. And the boys. They were going to be so cute. And there was going to be butterflies all over. She wanted a new beginning. The whole family needed a new beginning. They deserved it after all that they had been through. This was the last link to a very bad family. She brought Brent’s face to the front of her mind. She could only imagine what he was going through. Not knowing where she was. Something was missing from her hand. He had taken her ring. Once again she felt the panic trying to claw its way to the top but she used everything in her to push it down. She couldn’t let herself panic now. That would not work with everything that is going on.
The car slowed and turned. The road was bumpy here. She wasn’t sure but it almost sounded like a dirt road. One that people hardly ever went down. That made her heart drop down. It meant that it would be somewhere they would never think to look for her. But that wasn’t giving her family the benefit of the doubt. They would find her no matter what. They always found one another. She had to keep telling herself that. No matter what they always found each other. She had to hold onto that or she was going to go crazy with worry. Her sisters were fine. She would know it something was different. Right?
She tried to make the ride a little easier on her body. But she wasn’t able to brace herself she every bump she was flung around like a little ragdoll. She just hoped that she wasn’t going to break anything. She begged for this car ride to be over with. She prayed that this was just a nightmare that was going to end very soon. She was going to wake up and everything was going to be fine. But every time she opened her eyes it was pitch black and she could fell every bump that the car went over. It almost made her want to cry. But she would never let him see her do that. Finally after what seemed like an eternity the car pulled over. She could hear him get out of the car. She was scared she admitted that.
The keys jingled and he was whistling as he messed with trying to get the trunk open. She had to squeeze her eyes closed from the stabbing pain of the light. It felt like it was a million little knives that were stabbing into her head. She could hear him laughing at her as he grabbed her out of the trunk like she weighed nothing. He was humming and talking to himself. She still wasn’t sure who it was. She never got a look at his face and his voice didn’t sound familiar either. She just dangled over his shoulder. He wasn’t that tall but he was well built. She knew a few men like that. But she didn’t want to believe that any of them could do this to her. The people she had in her life she knew she could trust right? She didn’t know what it would be if she couldn’t trust. Everyone always told her she was too trusting. Maybe they were right maybe she did need to be a little less trusting. The smell of the room hit her like a ton of bricks and she willed herself not to lose everything that was in her stomach. It smelt moldy. Like it was old. The mattress that he put her on puffed with dust like it had been there for a million years. This time she did go into a coughing fit. She looked back at him but it was like the light from behind him was blocking his image out. She still couldn’t see him she wondered if he did that on purpose.
“Jenny so beautiful and innocent looking. But we know how evil she is. Once the Santos sisters are wiped off the face of the earth everyone will be better off.”
“Who are you and what exactly did my family do to you?” Jenny asked knowing the voice.
“You know what you did. And even if you don’t I’m sure your daddy knows what is the crime here. But he’s not here to take the blame. He’s the one that ruined my family and now I’m going to take his out. My brothers weren’t able to do it because they were blinded by your sisters. As beautiful as you are know you will not distract me in my mission.” He turned and left
Jenny just laid there stunned. She knew that voice but she didn’t want to believe that someone she knew and was part of her family would do this to her. And she didn’t want to think how this was making Caleb and Brent feel. He was a big part of their family. One that they had freely let into their lives. Without any reserve. And all this time he was planning this. Getting revenge on the ones that they love. Thinking that he had the right to get back at them. That he was judge and jury. And something that they had no idea. Something that had to do with her parents. Why the sins of the parents should be paid by the children. What kind of rule was that? She wasn’t sure that he was in his right mind and that made him more dangerous than she wanted to even think of. She didn’t know how she was going to make it out of this one but she knew he wasn’t going to hurt her family any longer. She was going to make sure of that.
She laid there making herself calm down. She had to get movement in her body before she could do anything. She knew that she had put her necklace in her pocket this morning wanting to put it on but she forgot. She hoped that it hadn’t been found if he had searched her. That would be the one link to her that her sisters and Brent would have to her. She knew that if anyone could find her it would be Jake but she knew that Carl was just as smart and maybe even crazier. And she wouldn’t be able to stand it if her sisters lost the ones that they had loved after fighting so hard to get them. She just wished sometimes that she it hadn’t been as hard to get with them as it had been. But that was just life and like always she was going to take care of her sisters. And if she could help it she would come out of this alive and no harm done to her. Or her sisters. Her body started to finally tingle after what seemed like an eternity. She was getting her feeling back. She smiled. He wasn’t going to know what hit him once she was back to herself.

Brent hated the look of betrayal in his brother’s eyes. Caleb wasn’t used to it. And by someone he thought was his family was worse. Someone who had seen what he had gone through when Jordan had almost died. Then went after Jerrica while she was in the hospital. Brent was sure that he was going to be out for blood. Slowly the girls started to get their limbs back. They watched Jordan careful to make sure that she didn’t have a bad reaction to the drug. She didn’t like all of the attention that she was getting. She demanded that they spend that attention to find Jenny. She wanted her sister home with her. She wanted her family whole once more and out of danger. The way it should have been all along. She knew that Jenny was probably worried about her sisters. Jenny always worried about her sisters. Jake got them put in a big room in the hospital that would house the family. They brought the kids in and tried to make it look as if it was just a family outing. Only thing is their mommies had gotten sick. The kids kept asking where their aunt Jenny was. Why she wasn’t with them they wondered. They weren’t as naive as they should be. The poor kids had to grow up fast. She wanted to hold her daughter and tell her that it was okay but she still had limited movement in her limbs. She was glad to see that Sasha was coming out of it faster. She could tell by the look in Caleb’s eyes that he was consider about her. She just smiled at him and let him know that she was okay. But she started to wonder also. If there wasn’t something more going on to this? But she forced herself to relax. She was just pushing herself too hard.
Jordan watched Jerrica making sure that this wasn’t too hard on her. She looked pale and tired. And Jordan knew that she was getting sick a lot. Jake even made her take a break and go see a doctor. She assured everyone that she was fine. It was just normal pregnancy stuff for her. But there was a look of fear in her eyes. She was glad that Jake was keeping up with the little ones and letting Jerrica get as much rest as she could. She didn’t know if this was good for her heart or not. But with the extra stress she could bet that it wasn’t good for her. No matter how much her sister said that she was okay. She hated the feeling of not being able to move. She wanted to know that Jenny was alright. She closed her eyes against the pain that started to come with the movement of her limbs. But she couldn’t let Caleb see that. She didn’t want him to see her in pain. She knew that he would try and take it on himself. She breathed through it like she had learned how to do when she was in the accident. She was good at hiding the pain. And the sooner that they felt she was ok the better. That meant every waking moment would be dedicated to finding Jenny.
Brent paced the window wondering where Jenny was. What she was feeling if she was okay. She had her necklace so there was still hope in that. But he just hoped that she was okay. It had been a better part of a day and the homing device hadn’t turned on. He just had to think that she was still knocked out by this drug that they had given to her. But would that even be a good thing. If it was still affecting her how much damage would that mean it did to her. So much was going through his head. He just wanted it to stop. He excused himself from the room and went down to the cafe downstairs. Maybe some coffee would do him good or something. On his way down he passed the chapel. He hadn’t prayed in a long time and something told him that now would be a good time to start. He went in and sat down on one of the pews. And just stared toward the front for a while. He wasn’t sure how to start or even if he was listening.
“I don’t know if you’re even listening anymore. But this isn’t for me this is for Jenny. I’ve taken so long to finally give into my feelings for her. And now I don’t want to lose her. I can’t. After all of these years of running away from her I’m finally wanting to stay. And now she’s gone and I don’t know where to go. Where she’s at. Even if you don’t listen to me anymore this is about her. If you want someone take me. Her family can’t live without her. They’ve suffered enough don’t you think? And for what. Some mad man’s sense of justice? How can that be fair? They shouldn’t have to be subject to this. They deserve to be happy and have the life that they want. They are good people. Please just bring her back. Don’t let this mad man hurt her. Help us find her.” Brent didn’t realize that he was crying. He wiped the tears from his face. He didn’t need anyone to see how worried he was about her.
She was smiling at him. The love in her eyes took his breath away. Her smiled lit up the room. He could still smell the exotic scent of her perfume. His arms ached to have her in them. To know that she was okay. To never let her go again. He couldn’t just sit here and not do anything. This was driving him crazy. He needed to be out there looking for her. He got up from the pew and started pacing. There was something that they were missing he knew it. The files still hadn’t come over from Mr. Santos office. There had to be something in there. He turned when he heard someone clear their throat. He had thought that he was in the chapel by himself.
“Hello Mate. Thought you could use some company.” Jake smiled.
“Jake you should be with your wife.” Brent said knowing that he was considered about her.
“Yea the sisters needed sometime. They are going crazy about Jenny and I just had to get out of there and clear my head. You want to talk?” Jake asked.
“I’m just scared man. I know that you guys have been through this but you’re able to do more than I am. I’m just a photographer. I don’t have anything to contribute to the search. What if we never find her? What if I have lost her forever?” Brent said the words out loud.
“Cal and I went through the same thing Brent. We didn’t know if we would ever see Jo or Erica again. And when we did find them we weren’t sure that they would make it back to us. But they did. These girls are strong and they are fighters. Look how long Jordan fought for Caleb? How long Jenny has fought for you. Do you think that they would give up just like that? Jenny’s going to come back. She would never leave her sisters if she had a choice. But I know she’s going to try and finish this. That’s just who she is. She’s the oldest and figures that she has to protect her family. Her sisters are her world.” Jake said sitting on a pew waiting for Brent to do the same. “Brent you have more to offer than you think. You have a special way of looking at things when the rest of us can’t see it. You have a keen eye.” Jake tried to reassure him.
“I don’t know about that. You guys are the investigators. All I do is take pictures.” Brent said
“Brent I know that you’ve been thinking about something. Something that nobody else has been thinking about. I know that something has been bugging you mate something that maybe we haven’t thought of.” Jake said making Brent think.
“There have been things on my mind. That stuff that the old assistant is sending over. There has to be something in there. Something to explain why this family has been after the girls all these years. I’ve known this family for most of my life and they are good people. It just baffles me that someone can do this to them.” Brent said shaking his head.
“I know that I didn’t know the parents. But Erica talks about them all the time. I wish I would have known them and your sister Candy. It’s horrible that they are gone.” Jake said sadly.
“I wondered where you two had gone off too.” Wayne said as he came into the chapel followed by Caleb.
“Why aren’t you with the girls?” Brent asked.
“They kicked us out and told us to get Jenny found. So that’s why we are here for now. I wish I didn’t have to leave Jordan but I know that she wants her sister found.” Caleb said.
“I don’t want to leave Sasha but she’s not taking too kindly with being drugged like that. I don’t argue with her.” Wayne smiled
“So where do we go from here?” Brent asked the question that was on everyone’s mind.
“Well we see if her pedant was activated yet or not. Brent we have to keep hope. We can’t think the worst or we won’t be able to help her. Let’s get on this and get her found. This is the last of it. Nobody is going to be threatening my family any longer. This is it.” Caleb said taking charge like he normally did in these kinds of situations.
“We need to make this done and over with. Jake do you have that fancy laptop that you always carry around?” Brent asked.
Jake just smiled at him. They found a quiet corner in the hospital and went to work on finding their loved one. Brent almost felt sorry for Carl. With the four of them he didn’t have a chance.

Mobility was finally coming to Jenny. She moved slowly because it burned too moved. Her muscles felt like they were on fire. But at least she could move a little. She found the necklace in her pocket and put it on. She wasn’t sure if she was able to make the tracking device turn on or not but maybe it had. She could only pray. She looked around her room. It was musty and moldy. There was a small sink in it. She went over there and washed her face. Something to do but sit around. She had to hold herself by the sink. She was still very weak. She was going to have to try and make him fall in love with her like his brothers had with her sisters. It wouldn’t be hard she was sure that he was half way there anyway. She could always see it in his eyes. Even before she knew who he was and what he was doing he always looked at her with longing in his eyes. She could use that against him. And she would. Anything at this point to keep her family safe she would.
She finished washing her face and combed her fingers through her hair. This was the role of a life time. It was a role that would save her life and most of her families if she did it right. She slowly made it over to the moldy bed and gently sat on it. She just had to picture herself somewhere nice and warm with Brent beside her and her family. She heard someone coming down the hall and knew it was time to put her face on. He rattled the keys as he came down the hallway. Wanting her to know that he was there most likely. Once again she closed her eyes and thought about Brent and going home to him. This was the only way. Maybe she would somehow get out of this alive.
“Well I see that you’re up and about.” Carl said gruffly
“Yes, I don’t like whatever you gave me.”
“Good there’s a lot that you’re not going to like here.” Carl said putting the keys in his pocket and pulling out another syringe.
“Carl you don’t have to do that you know.” Jenny said afraid of what it would to her if he gave it to her.
“Jenny I know how you and your sisters are. I can’t have you fighting me. I can’t have you get away and ruin everything that my father started.” he said to her not looking her in the eye.
“Carl how can you do this to your family? Caleb took you in and now you turn and do this to him. You guys almost killed the love of his life.” Jenny pleased with him.
“Cal is a weak man seduced by your sister. It would be better for him if she was gone. You guys are nothing but evil. And you hurt everyone in your path. No matter how angelic your face is I know that there is a demon underneath. And I have to stop you before you do more damage. They will be better for it.” Carl said taking another step closer to her.
“What did we do that we deserve this? Tell me that Carl. I deserve that much.” Jenny tried to get him to listen to her.
“In time my dear. I’m going to get all of you together and make sure that this is done right. So for now luv you’re going to be taking a little nap.” Carl said as he stuck the needle in her arm.
Jenny cried out as the drug took immediately took hold of her. Darkness grabbed her before she even had a chance to fight it. Carl almost was hooked by her. Like his brothers. He was weak. He should kill her right now and just get it over with and then go after the sisters but he couldn’t bring himself to do that. She was so beautiful even in sleep. Her hair floated like a crown of fire as he laid her gently on the bed. He was going to have to make this fast if he was going to be able to get this done. Otherwise she was going to get her claws in him and he would be dead like his brothers and father. He had to be stronger than that. Show his father that he could do what he was told. Show his father what a mistake he had made when he had left Carl behind.
He took one last look Jenny and was saddened by the fact that he was going to have to kill her and take her away from everyone that loved her. But it had to be done. He shut the door and made sure that he locked it. He couldn’t put anything past these women. They were crafty. He shook his head he was going to have to keep her out of his head if he had any hopes of doing what his brothers were supposed to. Maybe then he would be free of the curse of his father always haunting him though he was dead. If he did this one thing for his father then he could rest in peace and Carl could get on with his life. Put all of this behind him. Then he could start the life that he was meant to live. One that didn’t have all of this hate in it.
He walked back to his study to figure out just how he was going to do this. Jenny was right. They had always been kind to him. And Caleb was like a brother to him. But he had to think about his family too. He had to give his father the rest that he deserved.
“I knew you would be too weak to carry out my wishes.”
“No daddy I’m not. I just want to help you rest. I’m just sorry that I have to hurt my friends. The people that cared about me.” Carl said sadly
“It was all a trick. They just wanted to get you on their side and go against me. Look at what your brothers did to me. They are gone now because they were blinded by them. You have to be stronger than them.”
“I know I know. Leave me be for the time being.”
Carl just wanted his dad to go away and leave him alone. But his dad continued to stay. So for now he knew that he had no other choice than to kill the rest of the Santos line. He just shook his head. This was going to be harder than even he could have thought.

Brent still paced back and forth. It had been four hours since they had found Jordan and Sasha in the house. They hadn’t heard anything from Jenny yet. This was making him nervous. She had to find some way to get ahold of them. Some way to tell them where she was. She should have been able to active her necklace by now. Jake had been in front of his computer for hours. Even Jerrica count pull him away. He was bent on finding Jenny. And Brent was grateful. He knew that his brother and everyone else were feeling a sense of betrayal from what Carl had down. But they had to find her.
“I got something!” Jake said getting up from his seat. “It’s faint but it’s a signal. And it’s where the other brothers had tried to take Jo and Erica. I didn’t think anything was still up there. We got a hold of the cabin that Carl had found.” Jake said the name felt like a rotten taste in his mouth.
“He can’t be going up to the cabin. Was there anything left up there?” Caleb said
“Not that I know of. I know there were a few other houses up there but nobody would be stupid enough to let him in would they. Knowing who Jenny is? I mean it’s not like Jenny isn’t well known. All of the girls are very well known. So wouldn’t someone know to call us if they saw her?” Jake said.
“You would think but we don’t know what’s up there. Who do you think we can trust? Who has Carl got to and made them think what he does about the girls. What kind of cult he has started.”
“I don’t think he has a cult going on. I think he is a very confused person and that makes him dangerous. With how faint the signal is I believe she’s underground somewhere.” Jake said still working on his computer.
“What if it’s a trap like what they did with Jordan?” Caleb said remembering that day when Jordan had been kidnapped.
“I don’t think it is. I don’t even think he knows that we got the necklace replaced from the fire. He couldn’t know about that because we kept it quiet.” Jake said.
“I know but these brothers have known stuff that they shouldn’t have. So who’s to say that he doesn’t know the inside stuff?” Caleb said knowing that this was probably true while trying to believe that it wasn’t true.
“My gut tells me that this is for real Caleb. We might be able to find Jenny by the nights end if we leave right now.” Jake said
“Only because I trust you. Brent I don’t’ know if it’s such a good idea if you come with us.” Caleb said.
“No I’m not staying here. I want to be there if Jenny needs me. Nobody was able to keep you back when it was Jo. Or you Jake when it was Jerrica. When both of you had been hurt and should have stayed in the hospital. Please don’t ask me to stay behind.” Brent pleaded needing to be with Jenny.
“Your right it wouldn’t be fair to you and I won’t ask just I don’t want you to get hurt either. It’s a no win situation.” Caleb said conflicted.
“Cal, I’m not going to give you a choice. I’m going. You never know you may need me.” Brent smiled putting his foot down.
Caleb just shook his head. He knew how stubborn his brother could be at times. But Caleb had also been in his shoes at one time. Caleb and Jake tried to go through the people that was in the station and who could be trust worthy. They had a list of names. He knew not all of them like Carl. In fact some of them men had tried to warn him that something wasn’t right with Carl but Cal wanted to believe that Carl was good just awkward around people. Anyway that’s what he would like to keep thinking. But now he knew better. And as much as that hurt it was reality now. He was going to have to overcome it like he did everything else. He rounded up the officers that he knew he could trust. He let Jake head it as he went back to check on Jordan. He had Brent follow him so he stayed out of trouble.
When they walked into the room Sasha was looking a little better. But Jordan still looked too tiny in the bed that she was staying in. Caleb never wanted to see her like this again. But here she was. And now her oldest sister was missing. His blood started to boil as he thought about this. To think that now his little brother was going through the same thing that he had went through a few years ago. He never wanted that for him.
“Hey you two you look like you might have some good news.” Jordan said smiling.
“Hey baby. We just might. We have a weak signal on Jenny’s necklace. It’s up in about the same place that his brothers were trying to take you.” Caleb said brushing some hair off of her face. He noticed that she was warm.
“Why would he be stupid enough up to take her up there?” Jordan asked she sounded horrible.
“It means something to him. I’m not sure what it would be. But it is something.” Caleb said looking at Brent.
Brent knew that look something was wrong with Jordan and she wasn’t letting on. The drug had definitely done more damage than anyone had thought. And she was trying to play it down so nobody would be sad or worry about her and take that away from Jenny. But Brent knew that it would tear Caleb apart to have to leave her. He went out and got the doctor to come in and check on Jordan without really checking on her. Then he went in search of Jake to see if there was some way we could keep Caleb here.
He found Jake heading up the search for Carl. There were more men here than he thought would be. Brent got Jake’s attention and pulled him to the side to talk to him. He knew that if anyone would be able to talk to Caleb it was Jake. He just had that way about him.
“How’s it going?” Brent asked nodding towards the room that they had made their command center.
“It’s going good. These men feel as if they let their beloved Chief down by letting Jordan get hurt again.” Jake explained.
“It’s not their fault we all trusted him. That’s why I’m here. We need to find some way of making Cal stay here with Jordan. She’s not looking good at all and if something was to happen to her while he was gone then he would never forgive himself for that.” Brent explained.
“I can do that. I noticed that earlier when I was in the room. She’s looking mighty pale. If that is at all possible. I would rather someone stay behind with Jerrica anyway. Make sure that she keeps herself out of trouble.”
“Yea she does have a tendency to do that now doesn’t she?” Brent said knowing that would keep Caleb back.
“Yes she does. She’s quite the handful but I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Jake smiled.
Brent knew that he was going to get his way. He followed Jake to the room. The doctor was there checking up on her but his face showed concern. It seemed that every time they came back in there she looked a little worse. Smaller if that was possible. The panic on Caleb’s face was evident. Brent didn’t know what to do for his brother any more. He just wanted to know why this was happening to his family. He got Caleb’s attention and nodded to the hall. He had to see what was going on. Jake followed him knowing this was going to be their one chance to get him to stay here.
“What’s going on Cal? Is everything okay with Jo?” Brent asked.
“No she has a fever and it seems that she’s getting weaker by the minute. I don’t know how to help her. I would take her place if I could.” Caleb said scrubbing his hands over his face.
“I know you would bro. and I know you don’t want to leave her. Why don’t you stay here and watch after Jo? We can have this covered and you could work this from home.” Brent said knowing the expression that he was torn.
“Mate, I need you to watch over Jerrica and make sure she doesn’t get herself into trouble. Let me take this over for you. You need to take care of your family. I will take care of the family too. I don’t want to lose anyone. And Jo will be stronger if you are here. It will give her less to worry about and more time to get stronger. She’s a fighter mate. She’s not going to let this knock her down. She has too much to live for.” Jake tried to sound convincing as he looked into the room.
“I don’t want to leave you high and dry. I want to get Jenny found and get this over with.” Caleb said
“Cal you’re not going to leave us high and dry. You’re going to stay here and run things. We are still waiting for those boxes from Mr. Santos old office. Maybe they will clue us in.” Jake said not giving Caleb another reason to give about not staying. They looked over as the doctor came out of the room.
“Doc is she alright?” Caleb asked eagerly.
“I’m not too sure Cal. Her stats are low and she’s running a low grade fever. We are going to keep a closer eye on her and I put the oxygen back on her since the levels weren’t where I would like to see them. Let’s just help her rest and stay calm. She’s been through a lot in the last few years and she’s not a hundred percent to where she used to be.” the doctor tried to reassure them.
“Okay we will keep her calm.” Caleb promised. “Okay I’m going to stay here. I can’t leave her. And Candy is already worried about her mother. I can’t just leave them like that. Keep in touch with me no matter what is going on. I want to know every step. And please be careful. I can’t lose anyone else.” Caleb said something telling him this was a trap.
“We will. You just worry about Jo and the keep the other two out of trouble.” Jake smiled at him. He was trying to make Caleb feel better at ease.
Brent went back in with Caleb to the room. It looked as if Jordan had fallen asleep. She looked so peaceful. He looked up at Jerrica and watched her worry about her sister there at the bedside. They both knew that Jerrica didn’t like to be side lined for anything and this was going to drive her crazy. One sister was in the hospital not getting better. Her friend was in the same hospital. And her oldest sister was nowhere to be found being held by that monster. He looked back over at Jordan and hoped that she could pull through this one. She was already weakened by what had happened to her all those years ago and then having Candy didn’t help either. Of course he knew that she wouldn’t have changed that for the world. But now here she was again fighting to stay alive.
He shook his head. The need to find Jenny even more demanding than before. He had a feeling that something was going to go wrong very fast. If Carl caught onto the fact that she had a tracking device who knows what would happen to her. It couldn’t be anything good. Jake motioned for him to come out into the hallway and he left to see what Jake needed. Something about the way he looked he wasn’t happy.
“Jake what’s up?” Brent asked.
“I don’t know but I think that we need to get moving. The signal is moving.” Jake said not likening this.
“That doesn’t sound good Jake. Maybe he found the necklace and what it was.” Brent said not wanting to think that way.
“I’m hoping not because that is our one key to finding her before we’re too late.” Jake said quietly going into the room and telling Caleb what they were doing.
Brent met his brother’s eyes and nodded. They knew what this meant. There was a good chance that Jenny might not be coming back and then that would give Jordan no hope to make it through this and Jerrica would be devastated. They all would lose the ones that they loved. The bad guys would win and they would be miserable this wasn’t going to happen he wasn’t going to let it happen.
Jake said his final good bye to Jerrica and then he took off with Brent on his heels. The sense of urgency was weighing down on them with dread. This had to end now.
********
Jenny slowly became aware of the things around her. She felt like she was lying on a rock. She tried to open her eyes but it took too much effort. She tried to remember what had happened to her. She couldn’t seem too. She wondered why she didn’t hear her sisters around. Or the laughter of their little ones. It didn’t smell like fresh flowers in here. It felt dark and cold and it smelt of mildew and mold. The thought of that made her want to puke. But there was nothing in her stomach. She slowly started to remember what was going on. She was in some sort of room and Carl was the one that was keeping her here. He was going to kill her and then go after her sisters. She couldn’t let him do that. Jerrica was pregnant and she couldn’t let him get to her.
She slowed down her breathing. She could fall apart when she was with her family and knew that they were safe. She had to find a way to get out of where ever she was. She had to fight whatever he had given her with everything in her. She laid there for long periods of time fighting for her body to move. The tingling was the worst this time around. It felt like her skin was going to burn off. Everyone would be here soon she had her necklace on. She reached her hand up to her neck and there was nothing there. That meant that Carl had found it and was now doing who knew what with it. He was probably setting a trap for the others. No she couldn’t let that happen. She laid there again fighting the drug that was given to her. Now that the necklace was gone there was no way that they would find her. She sat up. She had to just sit there for a minute while her stomach stopped rolling. She couldn’t take the time to be sick. She had too much to do. Too much to get done so her family would be safe again. She stood up slowly letting the dizziness pass and then she walked to the sink. She put some water on her face. She looked at herself in the mirror and saw how horrible she looked. It was like death warmed over. She felt like it. Her heart felt like it was going to beat out of her chest.
She couldn’t linger on that now. She had to find a way to get out of here. She needed to get some kind of weapon. She couldn’t let him give her anymore of that drug. She wasn’t sure what would happen if he did. In the corner there was a piece of wood. If he got close enough to her she could hit him over the head with that and get away. She grabbed it just as she heard someone in the hall. It was Carl but he sounded like he was talking to someone maybe on the phone. It was a one sided conversation. She quickly jumped back into bed and pretended to be asleep. She was role playing in the movies and this was the act of a life time. She heard the key in the door and struggled to keep her breathing even.
His footsteps echoed in the room. This couldn’t have been a normal house. But she wasn’t going to know till she got out of here. He leaned over her and she did everything in her not to jump when he touched her. It was almost like something had changed in him.
“You’re so beautiful. I can now see where my brothers had fallen for your sisters. You are all so very beautiful. I know what I need to do. But I just don’t know if I can. I know that Caleb and your family have been so much better to me than my own family has been. But in order for my father to shut up and get out of my head I have to get rid of your family. I just don’t see any other way around it.” He caressed her cheek.
“And you’re a crazy.” Jenny said putting all of strength into and hit him over the head with the board she had found.
She had knocked him out and got his cell phone that had fallen out of his hand. She took it and ran out into a long hallway. There was no way this could be a house. It had to be some kind of ware house of something. She just started running when she was able to find somewhere to hid she would call. Her heart started beating out of her chest once again. She had to ignore it; she had to get out of here. She ran and kept running what seemed like forever. Finally she had to stop and rest behind some boxes to catch her breath. She made sure that Carl was still not following her then she pulled out his phone. Her hands shook as she dialed Brent’s number.
********
Brent was just thinking about Jenny when his phone rang. He pulled it out of his pocket and nearly dropped it when he saw the name on it. How dare he call him when he knows what was at stake. Did he not know that he wanted to kill him? He got Jake and Wayne’s attention before he answered the phone.
“Carl you have some nerve calling me! Where is she and I might not rip your heart out!” Brent said with a deadly tone.
“Oh my god Brent it’s so good to hear your voice.” Jenny said almost sobbing with relief.
“Jen, baby are you okay? Where are you?” Brent said putting her on speaker
“I don’t know where I am. It’s some kind of warehouse. He took my necklace Brent please don’t follow that who knows where it will take you.” Jenny said trying to keep her breathing normal.
“Baby are you okay?” Brent said not liking how she was sounding.
“I don’t know.”
“Okay Jen luv. Take a listen around you. What do you hear? Are you outside or inside?” Jake said trying to help her calm down.
“Right now I’m inside. I can hear a river. It sounds like its real close.” Jenny said the shaking getting worse.
“Okay, look around inside tell me what you see. What kind of building is it?” Jake said as his fingers were flying over the keyboard.
“It’s really old. It looked like there was animals in here at one time.” Jenny said.
“Can you get outside?” Jake kept on asking while he was typing.
“JENNY!!!!!”
“Oh God he’s coming.”
“Jenny go outside. Keep this phone on speaker and run out side luv.” Jake said scared for her.
Jenny did as she was told and put the phone in her pocket. She took off running. Her chest was hurting so bad she just wanted to throw up. She needed to get outside. If she got outside then she would be able to get away from him. Keeping to the wall she looked for a door. But instead she found what looked like a hole in the wall. It lead to the outside so she squeezed her way through it. She looked around. It looked to be the middle of the day. In front of her looked to be a cliff she could hear the raging water below. She took off to her left. She went the same way that the water traveled. She would find something downstream. She had to take a breather. She leaned against the tree and looked behind her. She couldn’t catch her breath. She knew that this was bad. She pulled out her phone.
“Brent?”
“Yes baby we are here. We have the phone and we are heading in your direction.” Brent assured her.
“Brent I think there’s something wrong with me.” Jenny said her sight blackened around the edges.
“Baby fight for just a little longer. We are coming.” Brent said not liking the weakness in her voice.
“I’m trying. I’m headed up stream with the river.” Jenny said hearing footsteps behind her.
She put the phone back in her pocket and started running again. She didn’t know how much more she had in her. She was dizzy and kept stumbling. Before she knew it she felt something hard knock her to the ground. She was pinned and before she knew it she was rolled over on to her back. There was a crazed look in Carl’s eyes. There was blood dripping down the side of his face. If she had a chance before it was gone now.
“Why did you do that Jenny? Why would you hurt me like that?” he said his grip
Felt like it was going to break her bones in half.
“Carl just let me go. Please. I didn’t do anything to you and I don’t know why you think you have to off my family line. We’ve been nothing but good to you.” Jenny said hating how her voice was shaking
“Daddy says that I have to hurt you and I have to listen to my elders.”
“No! I’m not going to let you hurt my family.” Jenny wasn’t sure where she got her strength but she was able to get him off of her.
She stood up before he could pin her again. Like her he was unsteady. She knew that they were close to the edge. He rushed her but she rushed him back winning the battle. She pushed until he was at the cliffs edge. He let go of her trying to keep his balance. She knew that it was either him or her that was going to make it out of here. And she wasn’t going to let him win. She gathered her strength and kicked him in the stomach sending him over the edge. This was really over. Her family was going to be safe. She sat down on the ground and pulled out the phone. Exhausted from the force that she had to use to get him away from her. She just wanted to be in Brent’s arms again.
“Brent?”
“Yes baby. Are you okay? Where’s Carl?” Brent said afraid for her. She sounded so weak.
“I think Carl is taking a swim. Brent I’m tired.” She said her words slurring.
“I know you are baby. Hold on just a little longer. We know about where you are.” Brent said as they pulled up to the warehouse.
“Where are you?”
“I’m here baby we are pulling up to the warehouse now. I just need to find you.” He looked over at Jake. “Jake we need the EMT’s she doesn’t sound good at all.”
“I know mate. They are behind us.”
“Jenny?” Brent said the line going quiet. “Jenny?! Come on baby answer me.” Brent begged.
“Brent?” it was weak but she was still there.
“Yes baby. Tell me where you are? Tell me what it looks like. Come on baby you’ve hung on this long. Just a little longer.” Brent begged her.
“I’m near the cliff where I pushed off Carl. I had no choice Brent. He was going to hurt my sisters.” Jenny said trying to stand. “I can see the warehouse.” Jenny said sitting back down unable to move any farther.
“Okay baby I know your hurting. We are coming for you.” Brent reassured her. “Do you hear Jake calling for you?”
Jenny took a minute to listen. She heard Jakes voice faintly. “Yes!” Jenny got up once again and started walking toward Jakes voice.
Brent knew that she had put down the phone and was walking towards him. He wasn’t ready to see her when she emerged from the tree. She was so pale. She looked like she was going to pass out. He took off for her. It had only been 24 hrs. But it felt like a lifetime. He reached her as her legs gave away. He caught her on the way down. She was shaking like she was on something but he knew it was more like a withdrawal from something.
“Brent my chest hurts.” Jenny said and curled up towards him.
“I know baby. They are on their way. Please just hold on a little bit longer.” Brent begged her holding her too him
“Jo, Jerrica? Are they okay? Sasha?” Jenny asked her voice seemed to be getting weaker by the moment.
“They are fine Jen. Calm down and take a deep breath. Come on now baby.” Brent willed her to slow down. She was breathing like she had just run a marathon. And she was burning up. He could feel her heart racing.
He looked up at Jake with fear in his eyes. He wasn’t scared of much but losing her he couldn’t handle the thought of losing her. He begged her to hold on for just a little longer. He wanted to know where the EMT’s were. He looked down at her and realized that she wasn’t breathing any longer.
“Jenny? No, no come on baby breath for me.” He felt for a pulse. It was slow and barley there. “Jake where are they?”
“They are coming mate. Come on we’ve got to do CPR.” Jake said jumping in to help Brent.
Brent watched as Jake tried to keep her heart pumping. Her lips were turning purple. If she didn’t get oxygen soon they were going to lose her. He kept talking in her ear and gave her breaths when he need too. It didn’t seem like it was working though. One minute then two passed. It seemed like it should be an eternity before the EMT’s showed up. They had to shock her a couple of time to get her heart beating again. They chose to airlift her out of there just to be on the safe side. Brent knew that he wouldn’t be able to go with her so as soon as she was on the helicopter he grabbed Jake and Wayne and headed toward the car. They knew that she would get there before them but they turned on the sirens and sped through the mountain roads. Brent dialed Caleb’s number on the way to the hospital.
“Brent?” Caleb answered the phone his voice strained.
“Cal, is Jo okay?”
“I don’t know. She’s not looking good and she’s not waking up. Did you find Jenny please tell me you found her.” Caleb said knowing that Jerrica was watching.
“Yes we found her. She’s not in good condition either. Cal, her heart stopped beating they were still working on her when they got to the helicopter.” Brent said with a shaky.
“Brent they are both strong. We’re not going to lose either one of them.” Caleb said trying to sound convincing but he fell short. “I think I hear the chopper overhead. How far away are you?”
“I don’t know 5 maybe 10 minutes. Wayne is going as fast as he can. I don’t want you to leave Jo. You stay with her. Let her know that her sister is safe. Help her fight. I will keep you up to date with what is going on.”
“Brent what about Carl?”
“I don’t know. I know that Jenny pushed him off the cliff. The guys are still looking for him. I don’t know what to say. In a way I hope he’s dead. For everything that they put this family through.” Brent said
“I don’t blame you there little brother. This family has been through enough. But as soon as this is over with we will be in the clear and nobody will have to look over their shoulders ever again.” Caleb said to his brother.
“I know we just need to get the girls better again. And then we can put all of this behind us. We are getting close so I’m going to let you go. I will keep you informed. Tell Jo to get better.” Brent said hanging up the phone.
When they got to the hospital it was a media frenzy outside. The press now knew that this family had been attacked once again. Brent didn’t like the press. Even though something of these was good others were just out for the money and would write anything he was just sick of how some of these journalist were. There was real issues going on overseas. He had seen them. And here they are camped out at the hospital door waiting to learn of the misery that this family was once again going through.
Wayne, Jake, and Brent all pushed their way through the crowds. The microphones that was pushed in their faces was unbelievable. But they wouldn’t answer any questions right now. They had one thing on their mind and that was to see how Jenny was doing. To make sure that she had survived the flight here. Her heart had to be beating again. He couldn’t lose her. They went into the waiting room. This seemed so familiar here lately. How many times over the last six years had they been here. Mostly for the bad that’s happened. The only good thing was when Jordan had given birth to Candy. That was the only good that had happened in this hospital.
He paced the room. He looked up when Jerrica had come into the room. She look scared and pale. He was worried for her and the baby. But Jake knew how to take care of her. He had her sitting down with him while they looked at some files. Jake thought about it. The stuff that was supposed to come over from Mr. Santos old office hadn’t come over yet. And he knew Angie she was the best and she wouldn’t just leave her bosses kids hanging like that.
“Jake did that stuff ever come over that Angie was supposed to send over?” Jake asked.
“No come to think of it mate. It hasn’t.” Jake said just as stunned.
“That’s not like Angie.” Jerrica spoke up.
“I’m on it.”
Brent knew that Jake was thinking the same thing that he was thinking. Something had happened to her. And it couldn’t be anything good. He looked at the clock. It had only been ten minutes since he had got here. And still the doctor hadn’t come out here to tell them how Jenny was doing. He looked back at Jerrica and noticed that she was sitting there with tears running down her face. Jake took her in his arms and tried to get her to calm down. She wasn’t used to having to be the strong one. That was Jenny’s job to do that. He couldn’t watch as she broke down. That just wasn’t Jerrica. She never showed her emotions in front of anyone but Jake. It bothered him too much and brought on more of a reality of the situation.
He looked back at the door and jumped up when he saw the doctor finally come out to talk to them. He didn’t look hopeful either. Brent’s heart dropped down to his feet.
“Doc?” Jerrica said jumping up.
“Mrs. Marshall. Jenny isn’t doing well. When she came in this afternoon and her heart had stopped. She hadn’t been breathing the whole way down here. We were able to get her heart to start back up but we don’t know what kind of damage there is from the lack of oxygen to the brain. Whatever drug was used on the girls she has a fever from it and her body is trying to fight it off. But like you Jerrica there is something in there that doesn’t like her. She is in a coma right now. I have to be honest with you it doesn’t look good. If she comes out of this she may not be the same.” the doctor said grimly.
“No, that can’t be the truth. Doc you brought both Jo, and I through this. Please don’t give up on my sister.” Jerrica begged.
“I’m not giving up on anyone Jerrica. I’m just stating the facts. I will do everything in my power to bring her back. But it’s up to her now. Let her know that you guys are here waiting for her to come back. Give her something to live for.” the doctor explained.
“Can we go back and see her?” Jerrica asked.
“Jerrica and Brent only. But we can’t let you back there for too long and you have to wear special gowns and covers for your faces. Right now your sister is very weak and anything that she catches can kill her.”
Jerrica and Jake both nodded their heads. This all seemed like a bad nightmare. One that they couldn’t wake up from. Brent and Jerrica walked back with the doctor. A few times it looked as if Jerrica was going to pass out so Brent put his arm around her and let her lean on him. They got dressed in the gowns that the doctor told him that they were going to have to wear. Brent thought that he was ready to see Jenny but he didn’t think that he would ever have been ready. She was so pale and there was tubes coming out of everywhere. There was one going down her throat helping her breath. This was not the woman he remembered. She was so pale and so tiny. Her flaming red hair wasn’t so bright right now. He wanted to see her green eyes. He caressed her face with his gloved hand. Jerrica was holding on to her sister’s hand rocking back and forth. This was something new to both of them. Never in either of their life had they ever seen Jenny this still. Even when she was sleeping she seemed to be moving. But not now she was just lying there. Almost like a shell of her old self.
Jenny could hear both Brent and Jerrica. But why was Jerrica crying. Had something happened to Jordan? She tried to remember what had happened. She knew that she was running from Carl and that he was trying to hurt her and her sisters. They both stood up and she pushed him over the cliff. She had killed someone. She couldn’t live with that. She didn’t want to kill anyone. The realization of that was almost more than she could bear. She felt like she couldn’t breathe like someone was trying to hold her throat shut. She struggled for breath and tried to call out for Brent but things went black.
Brent and Jerrica were just standing there with the monitors starting to go crazy. Brent looked from the monitor down to Jenny. She was turning purple again. The next thing Brent knew he was getting pushed out of the way by doctors and nurses. Jerrica too was being pulled out of the way. They were both in shock. Not sure what was going on with this. They watched as they worked on Jenny once again. Trying to keep her heart beating. That seemed to be the hardest part right now. Jerrica was beside him bent over crying. He knew that he had to help her. That’s what Jenny would want him to do. Not stand here and just stare. He took one more look at the door and then grabbed Jerrica around the waist. He knew that she wouldn’t be able to walk so he picked her slight form up in his arms and carried her out into the waiting room. He pushed the doors opened with his back and walked out with her. Jake was beside him in a flash taking her from him.
“Erica?” Jake said gently taking her to the chairs and sitting down with her in his lap. “What happened back there?” Jake asked Brent.
“We were just standing there and the monitors just went off and she started turning purple.” Brent said in shock.
“Brent you have to believe she’s going to be okay. She’s one of the strongest women in the world and there are only four of them. And they are all here with us.” Wayne said trying to convince his friend.
“They maybe strong but how much more can these girls take. They all have lasting scars with what he did to them.” Brent said wanting to put his fist through the wall. He watched Jake take care of Jerrica while they waited until they heard something about Jenny. “Wayne go up to Sasha and Caleb. He might need a shoulder. This isn’t easy for him.”
“Okay, I’ll be down here if you need anything though.” Wayne said taking off to the room.
He watched as Wayne walked off. Right now this family was going through so much. He just hoped that this made them stronger. As long as this didn’t take anyone of their lives. Then that would tear then apart. He just wanted this to be over with. He walked to the windows and just looked out. He could imagine what Jenny and he could be doing tonight. Maybe a walk in the park or dinner somewhere. He held the ring that he had given her in his pocket. He wanted to get her a necklace to match it. He knew at that point he would do anything to bring her back. He felt a hand on his shoulder and knew Caleb had come down.
“Cal you should be up with Jo.” Brent said not turning around.
“No my brother needs me too. Wayne told me what happened to Jenny. As hard as it is just believe that she will come back to you. They just need to find a way to work this out of her system and then she will be okay again.” Caleb said trying to believe what he was saying.
“I know that you want to believe that Cal, but even you are having a hard time with it. The doctors don’t even know what kind of drug this is. Or why it affects the girls like it does. Luckily Sasha was able to fight it off.” Brent said with some relief.
“Yes that is good. She doesn’t deserve anything that is happening to this family.
“Cal, what if she doesn’t make it. Look at Jerrica she devastated. If she gets under too much pressure what’s going to save that baby. Her heart isn’t all that strong either. If Jenny doesn’t make it then who knows what’s going to happen to either of them.” Brent said feeling like his world was crashing down around him. “If I hadn’t been so scared and let her in a long time ago maybe this would have never happened.”
“Brent you can’t blame yourself. It’s a scary thing to love someone. And then to lose them. We lost mom and dad and Candy and we both had to heal from that. It takes time. But we were both lucky that they stuck around for us to open our hearts again. If it wasn’t for them we would still be alone. I wouldn’t have a beautiful little girl that reminds me of my little sister. And you wouldn’t have that strong woman that all those years ago took on her sisters and gave up a career just so her sisters could finish out high school here in town. She’s strong Brent. Her life is finally getting to the place that she wants it to be. She’s not going to give it up that easily.” Caleb said calmly putting his hand on his brother’s shoulder to show him that he had support.
“I know it’s just so scary. I’ve never seen her this still. She’s always moving and running around never stopping to take a break. She never got sick.” Brent said.
“Well this is just making her take a small break. Brent just let her know that your here no matter what happens. She will feel you. Look how we almost lost Jordan and Jerrica and they came back to us. Jenny will too. And she will bring Jo back kicking and screaming. I’m not losing the woman I love and neither are you.” Caleb said as the doctor came out.
“Brent Jerrica.” His voice was grave.
“How is she doc?” Brent asked bringing the doctor over to where Jerrica was sitting.
“She’s holding her own but barely. We got her heart to start again and we have her on a machine that is making her breath. She’s still in the coma. She has a long rough road ahead of her.” the doctor explained.
“Can we go and see her?”
“Jerrica, I want you to stay out here. I’ll let Brent go back and see her. We will be bringing her up to the ICU in a little bit. She will be by Jordan in the unit and you will be able to see her in a little bit. But you must take care of yourselves. This is hard on all of you. Jerrica especially you with a little one on the way.” the doctor looked at her and she just nodded to him and Brent.
He knew that she wanted to go back with him but the doctor was right. She needed to keep herself calm for the baby. He quietly followed the doctor. He knew that he wasn’t going to be prepared to see her that way. And he was right. When he walked into the room she was so pale almost transparent if that was possible. Her lips were still purple. He got into the gown and the face mask that they had given him. He kissed her forehead. And took her hand in his. It killed him to see her this still. This wasn’t his Jenny.
“Jenny you have to fight this. I need you and your sisters need you too. We can’t lose you and we know that you are stronger than this. Don’t leave me just when our life is supposed to be getting better. When we were starting to get what we wanted in life. All those little ones that you wanted. The business that we had started together. Things are looking up. Your nieces and nephews need you too. But I need you so badly. I don’t know what I’ve been thinking about when I’ve kept you and a distance. I was just afraid to love and to lose. I will never put you at a distance again. Just get your body to fight this.” Brent said caressing her hair.
Jenny could hear Brent and the pain that his voice was in. She was trying so hard to come back to him. She needed to come back for her sisters too. She knew this but she was so tired. And it didn’t hurt here. It felt like she was just floating. Like she was in a swimming pool in the summer just lying there letting the water take her where it wanted to. She could almost hear the sounds of summer. The BBQ’s that she would be leaving behind. The water fights between the big boys while the girls were around the pool watching the little ones in the pool. She wasn’t ready to give that up. But her body didn’t seem to want to wake up. As hard that she wanted to as hard as she fought it seemed like the further she was drug down. So she decided just to stay calm and let things happen. She knew that whatever had happened to her she needed to heal from it. She tried to squeeze Brent’s hand to let him know that she had heard him but she wasn’t sure her body listened. She just sat back and listened to Brent’s calming voice. Soon she was floating again in the pool.
Brent felt the slight movement of Jenny’s hand. He knew that it was her telling him that she was still around and that she was fighting. It helped him to believe that she was coming back to him. He knew that he was just going to have to give her sometime but he wasn’t going to leave her side. He was going to ask the nurses if it would be okay if he put her ring back on her finger where it belonged. he looked up when the doctor came back in. he told Brent that they were going to move her up to the ICU and when she got up there he would let them know. He didn’t want to leave but he didn’t want to get in their way either. He kissed her on the forehead and walked out to the waiting room where his family waited.
Brent told Caleb what they were doing and how he had felt her hand move in his. Caleb knew that was a good sign and they all went up to the waiting room for the ICU. Caleb wanted to go check on Jordan so he left Brent with Jake and Jerrica. Brent watched how Jake took care of Jerrica. The one woman that had always been able to hold her own looked so broken. He knew that she was worried about her sisters. And losing two of them at once would probably kill her too. He went over to her and knelt in front of her.
“Jerrica, you need to stop stressing before you end up in a bed right beside your sisters. And you have a little one to worry about. They are going to pull through this. You have to believe that. They don’t need you in here either. They need you to stay strong for them. Right now Jo needs you to watch over Candy. Because no matter how much Caleb wants to be there for his little girl he’s not going to want to leave Jo’s side. And he makes her stronger. Don’t give up on them. They would never give up on you. You have overcome some major obstacles in life and here you are married to a dream man. Have a little boy that is so cute and you have another one on the way that is probably going to be just like you in every way. You’re headstrong and stubborn. Don’t wilt now. You know Jo and Jen wouldn’t want that Jer. They would be very mad at you seeing how you are acting right now like everything is crumbling around you. It’s not.” Brent said wiping the tears from her face.
“He’s right baby. We need that butt kicking woman that made me chase her to find her because she thought that she could take care of things all by herself. We need her. Her sisters need her. You need her. You need to keep yourself calm for the wee one that is inside you. Your sisters will come out of this and do you know why. Because they are from the same grain that you come from. You guys are stubborn to the core. And you never give up.” Jake said sitting next to her.
“I’m just so scared.”
“I know you are baby we all are but right now they need us more than us being scared. We are the ones that are going to pull them out of the darkness and back to us. We have a wedding to plan at our villa in England. It’s going to be the best that anyone has ever seen. And do you know why. Because the whole family is going to be there and the whole family is going to be alive and this is going to be behind them. You need to start getting things ready for Jenny. She’s just asleep. Like you were when you went through this. Jo will come back too. Look at all the things that the doctor said she would never overcome. She had Candy. That wasn’t supposed to happen. She’s walking again. Again that wasn’t supposed to happen but it did. And it will again. You just have to have faith in this.” Jake said trying to get her out of the funk that she was in.
“I know you guys are right. I can’t let this over take me. My sisters are going to be fine. They just have to get better first. They are just sleeping and letting their bodies heal from the trauma that they have endured.” Jerrica said trying to convince herself.
“Exactly Luv. Please keep telling yourself that. The little one inside you needs you to be calm.” Jake said kissing her on the forehead.
“I know. I just can’t lose my sisters.”
“Erica that’s not thinking positive.” Jake said trying to look sternly at her.
“Your right.” Jerrica said taking a deep breath.
Brent was amazed at how much of a hold Jake had over her. He made her happy and it was good to see that for a change. If anyone deserved it that would be Jerrica. She had been through so much and for longer. She had been on the run from Carl’s brother before they even know that it was him that was after her. But here she was the happiest he had seen her in a very long time. Even though her sisters were here she was still happy.
Brent looked up when Caleb came out of Jordan’s room. He was looking ten years older than he was at the moment. He remembered when he and Jordan had gotten together and she got in that accident. He didn’t think his brother was going to make it if something happened to her. But she pulled out of it and he knew that they would pull out of it again. They wouldn’t let these brothers win. He knew that. Right now they had too much to live for. He had to believe that.
“Caleb how is Jo?” Brent asked.
“She’s hanging in there. No improvement and no decline either. So I guess that’s good news right.” Caleb said pushing his hands through his hair.
“Yes, give her time Cal. She’s not going to leave you or Candy without a fight. She fought too hard for both of you.” Brent said trying to feel what he was trying to get his brother to see.
“You talk a big talk. You need to believe what you’re talking.” Caleb said knowing his brother.
“I know. I just want her to wake up and I want this to be over with.” Brent looked up as an officer came up the hallway.
“Sir?”
“Yes McConally.” Caleb said
“We found Carl. He was at the bottom of the ravine. He’s dead sir. This is really over.” The officer sounded relieved.
“Thank you.” Caleb said taking another breath. It was over.
“This is really over Cal? No more looking over our shoulders wondering when this is going to happen again?” Brent said the feeling of relieve was surreal.
“We can tell them that it’s really over. That there is no more looking over our shoulders. That we can fully move on with our lives and live like we were meant to.” Caleb answered his brother.
Brent watched as the doctor came out to the waiting room. He told both Caleb and Brent that the girls were in bad shape and that they weren’t too sure what else they could do for them but watch them. He wouldn’t give them a percentage of survival rates. They didn’t have anything to go on. This drug was unknown and even to the doctors it was foreign. The doctor told Brent that he could go in and sit with Jenny for a bit and the same with Caleb. They both looked at Jerrica and she waved them on. She needed to get her composer before she went to see either of them.
Brent walked into the Jenny’s room and it still amazed him at how small she could look. She had a big personality but she wasn’t that big and this just made her look worse. She was so pale still and her shiny red hair was like a dull penny. But he knew that she was going to come back to him. She had to. They had too much to do right now. They had to grow old together anymore. He sat down beside her once he had put on the gown and mask that the doctors insisted that he put on.
“Jenny it’s over. Carl is dead. We don’t have to look over our shoulders anymore. We can finally live in the peace that you have wanted all these years. The kids are no longer in danger. Jo and Jerrica are safe. The only things we need are you and Jo to come out of this beauty sleep. I need you so much baby. I’m just sorry that it took this to show me that I needed you. Now if you came back it would be perfect. We have a wedding to plan I still have your wedding ring.” Brent said putting it on her finger gently. “And now it’s back where it’s supposed to be at. I’m not going anywhere baby. Not until you get out of here. I want you home with me.”
Brent continued to talk to her about anything and everything. He told her about his trips over seas. How he had always thought of her and wished that she was there with him. But he knew that was his fault. He knew that she would have followed him anywhere if he would have just asked. He told her how her sister was now planning her wedding. She was sure that there was something that Jordan had been planning for her wedding gown. Something that had some kind of butterfly in it. He knew that she loved butterflies. Then a new idea formed in his mind. They haven’t even thought about a new house for her. The nurse came in wanting to do some readings on Jenny so he stepped out in search of something to draw on. He hadn’t done it in a while. But he wanted to get some rough sketches on paper and get them started.
He stopped over at Jordan’s room to check on her. She too wasn’t looking like she was going to make it. He didn’t think that it was possible for her to get any smaller or paler. He could see she was struggling to breath and they was going to have to put her on a machine if she continued this downhill spiral. He wasn’t sure how she was going to come out of this. It was the weakest that he had ever seen her. But of course she had surprised them all before. And it made him think about Jenny leaving him and he just couldn’t.
He stopped in Sasha’s room and was glad that she seemed to be coming out of this quickly. She was getting stronger with every waking hour. Brent couldn’t help but wonder if she got a lighter version of the drug because she wasn’t part of the family. He grabbed the notebook that was in his briefcase and a pencil and made his way back to Jenny’s room. The nurse had just finished up with her. Brent could tell in her eyes that she was scared for her. He knew that things looked bad but he wouldn’t let himself dwell on that. He sat down beside her and started to draw. He wanted it to be a place of peace for her to get away. He knew that she loved Caleb’s garden so he was thinking that maybe he would have a garden maybe one like he had seen in china that had flowers growing overhead and made tunnel. He knew that she would love it. Maybe that’s where he would take her on their honeymoon when they got married. He couldn’t wait. The house wasn’t going to be as big as what she had. Maybe a little cottage with enough room they would be able to build on later if they had kids. If they could have kids. He didn’t know. He wouldn’t want her to put her life in danger to have them. As much as he wanted kids there were other safer ways that they could do that.
He didn’t realize how tired he was. He thought that he laid his head down for only a minute but soon he was asleep dreaming about the life that he was going to have once Jenny woke up.
Jenny knew that he was there with her. She wished so much that he would hold her. She didn’t understand why he couldn’t. Why he wouldn’t look at her. He seemed so sad. She tried to talk to him but it was like he was ignoring her. She was even yelling at him but it was like she wasn’t even talking. It was making her so mad. If there was one thing it was she didn’t like to be ignored. Once again she tried to get her eyes to open and they wouldn’t. It was like someone had super glued them shut for a practical joke. She couldn’t even make any of her limbs move. What was going on with her right now? Why couldn’t she move? She had heard that this was all over and that they could get on with their lives. So why couldn’t she get up and go and start her life with Brent. But she couldn’t move. And she had heard everyone talking in hushed tones about her. It was almost like they thought that she wasn’t going to come out of this. She fought so hard to open her eyes. To move anything. But she couldn’t. She was trying so hard that she felt like her heart was going to explode once again. Darkness took over her before she had a chance to say or do anything.
Brent heard the monitors going off. He came awake with a jolt. She was stable and he had only just closed his eyes. So what was this? What was going on? He dropped his notebook and it seemed almost in slow motion he ran over to her bed calling her name. But there were hands on him. And pretty soon he was taken out of the room to let the doctors and nurses work on her. To try to bring her back. He heard the machine go flat line. Her heart had stopped again. What did that mean? What did any of this mean? He felt arms go around him. He knew that it was Jerrica, Jake and Caleb. Helping to hold him up and bring him over to a chair. He looked over and saw that he was in Jordan’s room.
“Brent what’s going on?” Caleb said kneeling in front of his brother.
“I don’t know. I think I dozed off because I was woke up by the monitors going off. And they were pulling me out of the room.” Brent said his voice breaking as much as his heart was. “When I looked back into her room she had flat lined again.”
“Brent she’s going to be okay.” The voice was faint but it was familiar.
They all looked up and saw that Jordan was awake. For the first time in two days she didn’t look like a shell of herself. She was still pale but she was awake Caleb’s face lit up as he realized that she was back with them again. He was able to see those green eyes that he missed so much.
“Baby.” Caleb said rushing to her side.
“Hey.”
“How long have you been awake?” Caleb asked kissing her forehead.
“Just now. I heard the alarms going off.” She smiled at him. “Brent she can’t leave us. She won’t. She has to stay around and make sure that Jerrica and I are okay. Even though we are married and have families of our own she’s still the mother hen. She’s been through a horrible ordeal. We can’t expect her just to open her eyes and she’s going to be okay. She’s got to heal. And she’s stubborn.” Jordan said her eyes closing.
“Jo? Are you alright?” Caleb asked.
“I’m fine Cal. Just tired. And just like my sister I’m not going anywhere. So quit fretting so much. And Jerrica I know that you’re a worry wart over there. You need to stop for my niece or nephew.” Jordan said weakly.
“Jo don’t worry I’m doing my best for you.” Jerrica said smiling down at her sister as Jake put his arms around her.
“Brent, don’t give up on Jen. She’s going to come through this just fine. As you keep telling me we are all fighters.”
“I’m never going to give up on her.” Brent smiled.
“Cal, is it really over? Nobody is going to be coming after this family ever again?” Jordan said wanting to make sure that it was true.
“Yes baby everything is over and we can live in peace. Nobody is going to hurt you ever again.” He said kissing her gently.
“I love you Caleb.” She smiled up at him as her eyes fluttered shut.
“I love you too baby. Sleep and get better. We’re going to be going on a family vacation as soon as you and Jenny are okay.”
Jordan seemed like she was finally at peace at the thought of never having to look over her shoulder again. And her daughter was going to be safe now. Brent hadn’t seen that look on Jordan’s face in a very long time. He was glad to finally see it. And the relief in his brothers eye’s was something that he hadn’t seen in a very long times either. He looked more relaxed than he had in years now.
Now all they had to do was get Jenny to heal and their lives would be perfect for the first time in a very long time. The doctor came in after what seemed like hours and explained to them that Jenny’s heart was weak. It was going to be up to her if she came out of this or not. She needed to have a strong enough will to do it. And even then he wasn’t sure that it was going to be enough. Jerrica leaned on Jake even more when the doctor left quietly sobbing at the news. Brent looked over at Caleb not sure what to do. The look in Caleb’s eyes said it all. Even he was scared that she may not be able to pull herself out of this one. No the doctors were wrong and she was going to come back to him. He left to go back into her room. He dressed in the same gown and gloves that they had been making him use since she was in here. He went over to her bed and kissed her on her forehead.
“Jen you have to come back to me and your sisters. Jo woke up just now. It’s your turn. You have to prove these entire doctors wrong baby. Show them how strong you are.” Brent said trying to keep the hitch out of his voice.
Jenny could hear him and the sadness in his voice. She was just so tired and she felt so heavy. It hurt to stay here. Something warm called to her. She so badly wanted to go that way. The fight in her was gone. Her sisters would get along without her okay. They had families to take care of now. And she could go see Daddy and mama. Be with them. She started floating and the higher she went the less it hurt. And the warmer it got.
It was so warm and bright the farther that she floated. She started seeing people standing around and the closer that she got she saw that it was her mom and dad and her best friend Candy.
“Daddy!”
“Hi my darling girl.”
“I think it’s time to come and be with you now.”
“No baby it’s not. Daddy and I want nothing more than for you to be with us. But now this is over. You can live your life and not having to worry if someone is after you. You have waited your entire life for Brent to finally see you with the love that you knew were in his heart. And your sisters need you. It’s not your time honey. We will be here when it is though. When your old and have lived your life. Right now you have to stay there.”
“But mama it hurts so badly and it’s so hard to breath. And I miss you and daddy so much.”
“Jen, my brother need you. And you need to help take care of my nieces and nephews since I can’t be down there.” Candy chimed in.
“Jenny, stopping fighting this drug. Let your body relax and you’re going to be just fine. You’re a fighter now go and prove to me that you are. All you need to do is let yourself relax and quit fighting let your body have a chance to heal.”
“Yes daddy.”
“We love you baby girl. Now please stop fighting and get back to the family sooner.”
Jenny didn’t want them to go anywhere but she knew that they were right. It wasn’t her time. Why would she sit there and let something that she had fought so hard for go? Now that it was all within her reach. She was going to do what her dad had said she was going to stop fighting and just relax and let her body heal. She could feel Brent there with her and his worry for her. But she was going to come out of this. She just relaxed and didn’t fight too much. This was the only way she was going to get better faster. The only way that she was getting back to her family.
Brent paced in the room that seemed like a prison. She had been laying here in bed for the last two weeks. She seemed to be getting worse though the doctors wouldn’t tell him that. He had to make himself believe that she was coming back to them. It seemed like she was relaxing a little bit. Her heart hadn’t stopped in the last two weeks which had to be a good sign wasn’t it? But he still felt like a little bit of him was dying with each passing minute. He looked out the window. The weather was beautiful. It would be a great day to go and take a walk or have a picnic. Live their lives. But they were stuck in this hole. They had been. He looked back over at Jenny. She was so still. He was used to her bouncing off of the walls trying to get things done. He looked up when someone came into the room. He smiled when it was Jordan. At least she was getting better.
“Hey.” she said her voice still weak.
“Hey Jo what are you doing up?” Brent asked pulling a chair closer to Jenny’s bed.
“The doctor said it would be good for me to get up and walk around a little bit. It’s strange seeing her this way isn’t it?” Jordan said looking at her big sister.
“Yes, she’s usually the one that is rushing around making circles around us.” Brent smiled standing at the end of the bed.
“Yea you could never make her sit down could you?” Jordan said a sadness to her voice as she looked at her sister.
“How are you feeling Jo?” Brent said making small talk.
“Tired. It takes me longer to heal than normal. But I will get there. And so will she Brent.” Jordan said trying to reassure him.
“I keep trying to tell myself that every day. I just feel like she’s slipping away a little more each day.” Brent said.
Jordan turned to get the brush that was on the side table and started to brush Jenny’s hair. “She’s always been one for the drama Brent. It’s in her blood I suppose. She will make all of us suffer until she’s sick of it.” Jordan smiled up at Brent.
“Yea this is true. But I’m not a patient one that’s her department.” Brent said looking at Jordan.
He pulled up a chair and listened to Jordan talk about the past. Back when times were so simple. They didn’t have to worry about who was after them or if they were going to live to see another day. He laughed at what they had done to their parents as kids. It brought back such great memories. He wished that Candy was here and wondered what kind of woman she would have grown up to be. She would have loved little Candy and Eddie and the new one that was on the way.
That’s the first thing that Jenny heard. She heard Brent’s voice. He was still there. He sounded so tired. And he was talking to someone. She listened for a minute. It was Jordan that meant that she was okay as well. She was relieved about that. She slowly opened her eyes. The light was bright making her close them again. She tried to say something but she couldn’t something was blocking her air way. She remember what her daddy said and just stayed calm. Jordan was brushing her hair. It felt so good. She squeezed Brent’s hand and felt him go still. She smiled thinking that he was still with her.
“Brent what’s wrong?” Jordan asked looking at him as he went still.
“She squeezed my hand.” Brent said in amazement.
“What?” Jordan looked down at their joined hands.
“Jenny do it again let me know that I’m not crazy.” Brent begged and waited her.
“Brent? Maybe you are just feeling things.” Jordan said waiting for it to happen too.
“No I know what I felt. There it is again.” Brent jumped up and was at her side in an instant. “Jenny please tell me that you’re coming back to me. Please.”
He watched as she slowly opened her eyes. It took her a minute to focus but she did. He had never been more excited about anything in his life.
“Jenny!” he said kissing her forehead. “Oh my god baby your back.”
Jenny just nodded her head and looked at her sister.
“Yes Jenny, Jerrica, and I are fine. So is Sasha. Its over sweetheart. We now can live our lives.” Jordan told her.
Jenny closed her eyes for a minute. When she opened them she tried to talk but she couldn’t.
“Baby you have a tube down your throat helping you breath. Don’t fight it. I’ll go get a doctor.”
“I missed you big sister. You scared us.” Jordan said with tears in her eyes.
“Miss Santos I hear that there is good news around here.” the doctor came into her room.
“Yes doc, she’s back.” Jordan said with a big smile.
“I can see that. I’m going to kick you down out of the room. I’m going to see if we can maybe take this out Jenny. Would you like that?” the doctor waited for her to nod.
“I’ll be back as soon as the doctor lets me baby.” he kissed her on the forehead and help Jordan stand up and walk out of the room.
He was on cloud nine. Everything that had happened over the last six years was over now. Now they could finally get on with their lives and be happy. He looked down at Jordan and saw that she was crying. He put his arm around her and helped her to her room. Jordan felt so tiny in his arms but at least he knew that things will be okay. He could feel Jordan crying but he knew that it was good tears. He walked with her to the family room and Caleb and Jerrica was at Jordan’s side in an instant. Jake went to Brent.
“Jo what’s wrong baby?” Caleb asked making her sit down.
“She’s awake. Jenny is awake.” Jordan said with wonder.
“What?” Jerrica said sitting next to her.
“Jenny just woke up. The doctor is in with her.” Jordan explained.
“It’s over Jake. It’s really over.” Jerrica said looking at Brent and Jake.
“Brent you have your love back. This family is now on the mend.” Caleb said his smile lighting up his face.
Everyone felt like a weight had been lifted off of their shoulders. Jenny was awake, Sasha and Jordan was on the mend, and so far Jerrica was having a good pregnancy. Things were starting to look up. The family could celebrate. As they were now. He wanted to get back into the room with her. She would be weak but the thing is she was alive. When all the odds were against her she was going to be alive. They had beat the evil that had come into their family and now they had the rest of their lives.
There was one thing that was bugging Brent. They never had received any of the documents that Angie was supposed to send them. Brent wondered what had happened to the office assistant and why they hadn’t heard from her in a few weeks. He was going to have to bring that up to Jake and Caleb. And soon.
Brent’s mind immediately jumped to his wedding and he wondered when she would be okay to travel. He wanted her to be his for the rest of his life. He almost laughed at when he thought about how long it took him to realize that. He couldn’t wait to take that family vacation that they were planning to go on. To see Jakes place where he grew up. His brother. His family was complete. Kids would be down the road when she was fully healed from this ordeal. He knew that she would bounce back completely but he didn’t want it to hurt her any more than she already was. Brent didn’t realize that he was pacing until the doctor came into the room.
“You can stop your pacing Mr. Watson. Jenny is doing well for the first time since she came here. We were able to take the tube out of her but we are just keeping her on oxygen to make sure that she’s getting the oxygen that she needs. But so far everything is looking okay.” the doctor smiled.
“When can we go and see her?”
“I’m going to let you all go in. but don’t over whelm the girl.” The doctor said and let everyone go in there.
The sisters descended on her. They both were talking and smiling at her like they had won the lottery. The men decide to step out and give the girls some time to catch up. They needed it. Now was the best time to let Cable and Jake know what he was thinking about Angie.
“Hey Cal,”
“Yeah.”
“Did anyone ever hear back from Angie? I know that she wouldn’t have waited this long to get those files to us knowing how much we needed them.” Brent said exhaustion finally catching up with him.
“Now that you mention it Brent no I haven’t heard anything from her and I don’t think anyone else has either. Jake can you check to see what’s going on? Brent you need to go and get some sleep. Jenny might be back with us but she’s nowhere out of the woods.” Caleb insisted.
As much as Brent didn’t want he left them alone to get caught up. He didn’t realize that he was so tired. He hadn’t slept in weeks. They went back into the room that had been designated for them. It was good that the family had been able to stay in the same room. He sat on Jordan’s bed and watched as Jake and Caleb took care of the kids. His eyes getting heavier with each passing moment. And soon he was asleep.
Caleb looked over at his little brother and was glad that he had fallen asleep. He was starting to look older than Caleb did. But Caleb understood with all of his heart that felt like. He remembered when Jordan had come back to him. He felt like he was able to sleep for a change without worrying about her. And he knew that Jake felt the same thing, both of them had been through the something. They took the kids out and let Brent sleep all that he needed. The kids were getting cabin fever but they had been great and so had Sasha. She hadn’t made it to a hundred percent yet but she was well on her way. It didn’t look like this drug had affected her like it had the sisters. But now they could all breath. They were free of this evil. It was gone forever. The sun looked brighter than it had a few days ago even a few hours ago it was dim.
Jenny was glad to be back. She missed her sisters so much and she was glad that her dad told her that she needed to stay there for them. Even though Jordan said she was okay she knew that this had weakened her just a little bit more. And Jerrica looked like she had been sick lately. She knew that it came with pregnancy but she needed to take care of her sister. But first she needed to take care of herself. She was weak and so tired still which was kind of ironic. She had been asleep for the last two weeks as far as anyone had told her. But she felt like she had been in a marathon the last year of her life. She just wanted to sleep. And she wanted to sleep in Brent’s arms. But he had given her sometime with her sisters. She remembered that he had purposed to her before all of this had happened and they were supposed to go to England for their wedding. She almost couldn’t wait for that. She wanted to be Brent’s wife and get their life together started.
“Jen are you okay?” Jordan asked with concern.
“I’m fine Jo I’m just a little tired.” she smiled.
“Rest Jen. We have the rest of our lives to get caught up. And the sooner we all get better the sooner we can go to the vacation that they were all supposed to take together.” Jordan smiled at her.
“Where did Brent go to?” Jenny asked.
“I’ll go and find him.” Jerrica said getting up leaving Jordan to watch over their sister.
What she found was Brent sound asleep in Jordan’s bed. She knew that he had been gone for a few hours. She took the chance of waking him up knowing that he would want to be with Jenny. She hated to wake him but knew better when Jenny was asking for him.
“Brent?” she shook him gently.
“Jenny? Is she okay? What happened?” Brent said disoriented.
“Calm down she’s just tired. I came to get you cause she’s asking for you. Things are going to be okay Brent.” Jerrica reassured him.
“I know I didn’t mean to freak out. I didn’t mean to fall asleep either.” Brent said crawling out of the bed.
“It’s okay you need your rest. We understand that. And now you can rest because my sister is going to be just fine. We are going to make sure that she takes it easy and she is going to heal just fine.” Jerrica almost sounded convincing. Almost.
“Jerrica you almost sound convincing with that comment.” Brent said smiling at her.
“I am convinced just a little worried. My mind just can’t grasp that this is truly over. Where did the guys go?” Jerrica asked.
“I guess that they must have taken the kids out to play and let me sleep.” Brent said trying to get himself back under control.
“Ready?”
Brent nodded and followed her back to jenny’s room. He noticed that like Jordan she had a lighter step about her. Jerrica was probably the one that had been effected the longest by this. It had sent her into hiding for a long time before she let Jake finally help her. And now they were on kid number two and he had never seen either of them happier. He knew that Caleb and Jordan would never be able to have kids again. Especially after this but they were happy. Caleb had finally let Jordan into his heart and it had been a ride ever since.
He stopped at the door of Jenny’s room. She was his. She had loved him all this time and no matter what he had done to her she had never faltered in that love. He had hurt her so many ways. He was ready to make up for it. The family vacation to England was where they were going to become each other’s forever and not nothing was around to take them away from each other but age. And they had a long time to live before that happened.
He smiled at his flaming angel when she had looked at him from her hospital bed. The love that shone from her eyes threatened to take his breath every time that he saw it. And it’s always been there. And to think that it almost didn’t have a chance. But she had fought her hardest to get back to them. She still had some recovery to go but she was awake and that’s all that mattered. He went to the chair that Jordan had given up for him. She tried to snuggle up as close as she could to him so he gently got into the bed with her and held onto her. It felt so good to have her in his arms. After a while her breathing slowed and he knew that she was asleep. He kissed her head and closed his eyes also. They both needed to get some much needed rest. And not that she was safely in his arms there was no stopping him. He didn’t even notice when the nurses came in and took vitals from Jenny. She was tucked at his side where she would always belong.
SIX MONTHS LATER....................
This couldn’t be a more perfect day. The weather in England had so far held up for them. They had arrived there a week earlier and as jenny looked over the land it was so green and Jake's house here was almost as big as a castle. Her sister was treated like a princess. She was glowing with this pregnancy. This was the best that she had looked in a very long while. Jenny was almost better. The doctors told her that she should never have kids. Her heart was too weakened by the drug that Carl had given her. So she had her tubes tied while she was in the hospital. The last thing she wanted to ever do was leave Brent or the child she carried. There were other ways for her to have kids. There were kids out there that needed a good home. And she would be able to give them the best.
She loved the house that Brent had drew up for her while he was waiting for her to wake up in the hospital. It was going to have a huge garden and flowers would make up the ceiling. She loved the idea. And the construction was already starting, as she stood there looking over the valley. It would be done by the time that they got back home. Jakes ranch was beautiful. She thought about the one that was being built at home. It would never compare to this. It wasn’t too hot today and it wasn’t raining like she had been told it often does. It had been lovely for the last week. And the people were welcoming. She couldn’t believe that she had fans on this side of the world but they all did. And in this country Jake was like royalty. But it didn’t affect him. He didn’t have an ego.
She turned when she heard giggles. The kids had come out to play with an old dog that lived on the property. She happy that none of them seemed to be effected by this nightmare that had happened to them. At least the fingers of evil hadn’t been able to touch their innocent minds and hearts. They were still able to be carefree and be kids.
“What are you thinking about?” Brent said coming up behind her and putting his arms around her.
“Kids, life. The one we’re going to start together very soon.”
“Very soon indeed. Everything had arrived from the states. The wedding can be as early as this weekend if you wish.” Brent said smiling down at her.
“I do Brent Watson. I want to marry you as soon as possible. I’m ready to start living my life with you.” she said looking up into his eyes and seeing her future there for the first time in a long time.
“I’m ready also. Nothing is going to stand in our way this time. I’m ready to take you as my wife and start our forever.”
Brent bent down and kissed her. Pouring everything that he felt into that kiss. They were finally together at last and he wasn’t ever going to let anything take her away from him again. This family was finally whole and it would be for the rest of all of their lives.
Brent knew that there was still a sadness in Jenny. He knew that she had loved Angie like part of the family but now she too was gone. Someone had killed her and set her house on fire. She didn’t have to wonder who it was. But he was gone now too. And everything could get back to the right way. Even there was so much life lost. But new life was being made in its place.
They both looked over at where the kids were playing and everything was right. after all of these years it was done and over with. the nightmare wasn’t going to happen any more. They were free. The family was going to be able to live now without looking over their shoulder and now they could truly be happy and watch the young ones grow up into the men and women that they were supposed to be. This couldn’t be more perfect. But its not the end. No. it’s the beginning for this family with lots of happiness and love to come.
