CHAPTER 14: Giving in – Part 1/3
I sat there at my desk, and Luca was seated in the chair opposite me. “The hunters are closing in, Damon and they are attacking quietly. Another one of our men was found dead near the border.” He regretfully informed me.
I rubbed my forehead and sighed heavily. “We will have to increase border patrols, and I want groups of 3 patrolling together from now on. Anything of interest is to be reported to me immediately. We need to figure out their plan.” I said to Luca, feeling the pressure of being Alpha more than ever.
Luca opened his mouth to speak again, but a knock at the door silenced him. I nodded my head at Luca to answer the door.
Luca walked over and opened the door, and I was suddenly hit with her scent, almost immediately driving me into a frenzy.
“Hello Amelia, what can I do for you?” Luca asked her, and my wolf growled lowly, not wanting another man to be so close to her.
“Where is Damon?” She asked him with an edgy tone.
Luca opened the door all the way, allowing her to see me. “He is right here.” He said plainly.
Amelia stomped towards my desk, determination in her eyes. “We need to talk.” She said, crossing her arms, and I chuckled to myself at her boldness, finding it rather intriguing.
I leaned back in my chair and planted my feet on top of my desk as I entwined my hands together on my lap, hoping to intimidate her, so I could watch her squirm.
I smiled. “Than talk,” I told her, curious as to what had Amelia in such a foul mood.
She stared at me intently. “Alone.” She demanded. Something was wrong, and now she had my attention. I looked to Luca and urged him to leave the room. He gave me a slight smirk before exiting my office and closing the door behind him. I looked back to Amelia and raised a questioning brow, and she didn’t hesitate to get to the point quickly.
“Am I your mate?” She asked, her voice faltering slightly. As soon as the words escaped her mouth, asking the question I wasn’t prepared for, my mouth went dry, and my throat tightened, unsure of how to answer such a delicate question, one that could put her in danger if I told her the truth.
I straightened myself in my chair, placed my feet on the floor and leaned forward. I then masked any emotions, not wanting her to see the truth in my eyes. “Why would you think that?” I asked.
Amelia threw her hands in the air, becoming agitated now. “Because everyone in your pack seems to think so, and from what Trevor told me, it adds up. Now, answer my damn question.” She hollered, frustration in her tone.
I had hoped she wouldn’t find out, at least until I had figured things out, and I didn’t want her to find out in such an unpleasant way. So I stood from my chair and walked over to her. “Fuck what the others think; what do you think?” I asked her.
Amelia groaned loudly, not liking my answer. “Damon, I said….” Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore. The desire was burning bright within, and the need for her clouded my mind as I finally gave in. I gripped her tightly, closing the distance between us and captured her lips with mine, tasting those sweet lips of hers.
My wolf howled with excitement in my head as I held her in my arms, kissing her feverishly. Then, reluctantly, I pulled back from her, staring into those beautiful eyes of hers. “Yes, Amelia, you are my mate,” I said, giving her the answer she wanted and telling her the truth.
She stood there silently, mouth agape, as she took in my confession. Then, she shook her head slightly, confusion written on her features. “Why didn’t you tell me? Why did you hide this from me? And how am I your mate if I am not one of your kind?” She asked curiously.
I stepped back from her, trying to think of how to answer her questions the best I could. “As you have seen, humans and werewolves don’t mix. We are supposed to mate with our own kind, especially if we are of Alpha blood; mating with a human is taboo. It is forbidden and is a law for us not to do so.” Saying this aloud caused my chest to ache and my wolf to whine. We craved to be with her in every way possible, but doing so would ultimately give her a death sentence.
Amelia furrowed her brows. “So, then, why haven’t you let me go?” She asked, hesitation in her tone.
My wolf snarled in my head, feeling possessive of her. “Because if I do, then I have to reject you as my mate, which could kill me or my wolf or both of us and…….” I stepped closer to her, my chest heaving. “I don’t fucking want to. You are mine, and I’m not letting you go!” My wolf rose, nearing the surface, as the thought of losing her was almost unbearable.
Amelia stepped back from me, her back colliding with the wall. “But what would happen if you mated with a human? Especially being an Alpha?” She asked, her voice faltering with her words.
I looked away from Amelia as the information I was about to tell her caused another pang in my chest. “My father would kill you, severing the bond between us. Then he would either kill me as well or lock me up for the remainder of my days, making me suffer in solitude,” I told her the truth and watched as her face fell. Amelia’s beautiful features were now stricken with grief, and tears started to well in her eyes.
She just continued to stand there silently, and it was killing me. I needed to know if she was ok, what she was thinking, but I also didn’t want to push her. I placed my hand on her shoulder “Amelia.” I said gently, but she cut me off and silenced me.
She shook her head. “I need to be alone for a while.” She whispered, breaking my heart in the process. I didn’t want to leave her alone, I wanted to stay with her and comfort her, but if this is what she wanted, I will give her that.
I lowered my hand. “I understand,” I said through gritted teeth as I stepped back from Amelia. My wolf was fighting me, not wanting to be away from her, as he could feel her pain. I watched as she walked out of my office and into the hall. The rage surfaced, taking hold of me, as I was angry at myself for letting her walk out, enraged with my father for his stupid fucking laws. I slammed my fists onto my desk and groaned loudly, then grabbed a nearby lamp sitting on my desk and threw it across the room, watching as it shattered into a million pieces. In some ways, I wished I had never met Amelia; then, her life wouldn’t be in danger because of me.
