Chapter 12

Matt found Sam standing in her closet in her bra and panties trying to decide on what to wear. He stopped in the door and leaned up against the door frame as he listened to her mutter to herself.

“Man, things were much easier to decide what to wear when I only had two outfits to pick from. I wonder what Matt would like for me to wear?” Sam thought out loud.

“I kind of like what you have on now!” Matt said and then laughed when she jumped and turned to face him.

“Oh Matt! You scared me!” She stomped over to him and playfully hit him on the arm. “I can’t decide what to wear for dinner. Help me?”

“Mmmm. Like I said, I like what you have on but since we have to go downstairs, why don’t you wear one of the dresses? I’m looking forward to seeing you in a dress and even more in taking it off of you later.” Matt teased as he reached for her. He slipped his hands around her waist and bent his head to kiss her. He had been dying to lay her down all day and after what his mom had told him, he needed to mate with her soon if he was going to save her from the unnecessary pain of her first heat. Just the thought of entering her had him hard as a rock.

Sam was getting very good at kissing too and when she sighed he couldn’t resist but to slip his tongue inside her mouth and their tongues mated slowly and sweetly. After a couple of minutes, Matt was having a hard time keeping himself from lifting her up and carrying her to bed. He broke their kiss and leaned his forehead against hers. “If we don’t stop now, I’m not going to be able to. I want you so bad, my love. But I’d better go get a shower and get ready to go downstairs or my mother will choke me.” Matt said softly and regretfully.

Sam was just as worked up as he was and she was more than ready to take their relationship to the next level. She didn’t know how to tell him that she was ready to mate with him, wanting him to mark her and she him. She moaned and looked up at him and with a naughty grin said “Can we continue this later?”

Matt growled low in his throat and grinned back at her. “Most definitely baby.”

“Before you go, help me pick out something to wear? Which dress do you like best?” Sam asked playfully.

Matt stepped over to the few items hanging on the rod and looked at each one. He finally decided on the blue one. He stated his choice then gave her a quick peck on the lips and said he was going to bathe and would be out in a few minutes.

Sam had to agree that the dress was very pretty and would really show off her eyes. It had a wrap around bodice with a deep V neckline, tulip sleeves that stopped just above her elbow and a full skirt that landed just above her knees. It was made of a silky lightweight polyester material that made it flow nicely down her body without being clingy. She pulled on some nude thigh high nylons and added the black heels that Natalie had insisted would go with lots of different outfits. She had never had clothes like this and they made her feel so pretty and feminine and down right sexy.

When it came to her hair and makeup, Sam got a little frightened as she wasn’t sure what to do. She had never really played with different styles for her hair and had always kept it tied up so as not to attract attention to herself. And makeup had never been an option and even though Natalie had bought her a bunch of stuff, she had no idea how to use it. She was beginning to panic and wondered if Natalie was home.

Without stopping to think about it, she ran next door and frantically knocked on their door. When Natalie answered, Sam begged her to come help her with her hair and makeup.

“I’ve never had makeup to use before and have always worn my hair up in a bun or ponytail so I’m not very good about styling it. Can you help me please?”

“Sure. Just let me let Richard know where I’ll be.” Natalie smiled at her and stepped back to call down the hall to her husband. “Richard, I’m going next door to help Sam for a few minutes. Come over there when you are ready to go downstairs.”

“Ok, hon. I’ll be ready soon.” The sound of Richard’s voice came back down the hall, then Natalie grabbed Sam’s hand and together they walked back over to Sam and Matt’s apartment.

Sam let them back in and they walked down to their bedroom together. Matt was in his closet getting dressed when they came back into the room. Natalie and Sam went into Sam’s closet and Sam sat down on the bench in front of the vanity mirror and waited for Natalie to decide what she was going to do with her hair.

Natalie looked over the hair accessories that she had purchased for Sam and with the dress she was wearing, she chose two pretty barrettes that had tiny blue hummingbirds on them. Natalie braided a section on each side of her face and pulled them back to be held in place by the hairpins. Then Natalie gave her a smoky eye look with some deep purple eye shadow, mascara and thin black eyeliner. Deep red lips and she stepped back to admire her work.

“There! Wow! You have naturally beautiful eyes but this look makes you look older, more mature. Matt is going to flip when he sees you.” Natalie whispered as she gave her a hug from behind. She had purposely kept her body between Sam’s reflection and the door so even if Matt did come to the door, he wouldn’t be able to see what they were doing until she was done.

“I’m going to go find out what happened to my husband. I’m surprised he’s not here yet. Come down when you guys are ready but don’t take long or Cook will have a fit if we make her dinner get cold.” Natalie said.

“Ok. We’ll be down soon.” Sam returned her hug and thanked her for her help and Natalie let herself out. Sam sat on the stool and admired what Natalie had done to her and she definitely wanted her to give her lessons in applying makeup. She almost didn’t recognize herself.

Just then Matt came to the door and before looking up from trying to get his sleeve buttoned he said “Are you ladies ready to go?” Then he looked up and realized his mother was no longer here and his mouth dropped open and his eyes got huge when Sam stood up and turned around.

“Wow!” He breathed as his eyes roamed over her from head to toe. He took another breath but all that came out of his mouth was “Wow!”

Sam walked slowly towards him with a sexy grin on her face and a twinkle in her eye. “I take it you like?” She said as she stopped a few steps from him and put her arms out and then put her hands on her hips.

“Like is not a strong enough word. Damn woman, you sure do look fine. I knew that dress was going to look good on you but I had no idea it was going to look that good.” He said and stepped forward to wrap his arms around her waist before he lowered his head and gently kissed her.

“Before we go downstairs, I have something for you.” Matt said as he reached into his pocket and pulled out the sleek gray box with the necklace inside.

Sam gasped as she looked at him with a question in her eyes. She put out her hand and realized it was shaking as she accepted it from him. She slowly opened it and gasped again when she saw the locket on the beautiful gold chain. The heart was a little larger than a quarter and had beautiful scroll work on the front. She looked up at Matt with tears in her eyes.

“It’s beautiful, Matt. Thank you! I love it!” Sam whispered. She felt like her voice didn’t work anymore.

“Don’t cry! You’ll ruin your makeup. Open it!” Matt said, softly as he cupped her face and wiped the single tear that escaped down her cheek with his thumb. “There’s something written inside.”

Sam’s hands were shaking but she managed to get the locket open and when she read the inside she felt like her heart was going to bust out of her chest.

“I love you more than I can ever explain and I can’t tell you how much this means to me. I will cherish it always.” Sam said as she reached up and kissed him. Her heels gave her enough height that he barely had to bend down but he still lifted her off her feet as he hugged her tightly. They stood like that for several minutes until his mother linked him telling him to hurry up and go downstairs.

“As much as I wish we could just stay in tonight, everyone is expecting us downstairs and we have outside guests so we need to go.”

“Help me put it on?” Sam looked up at him. Matt took the delicate necklace out of the box and Sam lifted her hair and with only a little bit of trouble managed to hook it around her neck. It lay gently in the middle of her chest and it looked great with her outfit.

Matt had never thought about it before but he wanted to buy her all kinds of jewelry, but first he wanted to buy her an engagement ring. He wondered what she would like and what size she would wear and how was he going to find out without asking her outright. He had a feeling he was going to need his mothers help with that.

They rode the elevator down, holding hands and Matt noticed she was still slightly shaking. “Nervous?” He asked.

“Just a little. I hate being the center of attention.” Sam admitted.

“Well, as far as I know, tonight the only addition to the people that are always there is Brock. The council members don’t get here until tomorrow. So you really have nothing to be nervous about.” Matt said. He had no idea what his mother had planned but he suspected that she would have gone all out and decorated the dining room with “Happy Birthday” signs, balloons, the whole nine yards. He was torn between wanting Sam to be comfortable and being made to feel like she is the special person he knows she is and that she is now a part of this pack.

They walked down the hall and Sam was a little suspicious when they reached the dining room and the doors were closed. Matt immediately knew that his mother had gone all out and he silently groaned. He had to be prepared to be as surprised as Sam or she was going to think he had been in on it.

Matt took a deep breath and reached out to open the door and swung it open. The room was dark at first but as soon as the door opened, the lights flashed on and everyone yelled “SURPRISE!” And poor Sam jumped and grabbed Matt’s arm in fear.

Matt shot his mother a look telling her he would like to strangle her right now but she was walking towards him with a big smile on her face. “Happy Birthday Samantha!” She ignored Matt’s angry look as she hugged Sam. “He didn’t know about this so this is all on me but I just wanted you to have a special birthday and let you know that we all welcome you to our family.” Natalie told her.

“Thank you but you really shouldn’t have gone to so much trouble. Look at the beautiful necklace Matt gave me.” Sam said, showing off the beautiful necklace.

“It’s lovely. Now come on. Everyone is hungry. Let’s eat so we can all have some cake!” Natalie said.

Matt kept hold of her hand as they walked over to the table and stopped to say hello to Brock and after a bro hug, he introduced him to Sam. “Sam, this is Brock Wright. He’s a long time friend and the man that I hope can help us solve our problems with your former pack. Brock, this is my mate, Samantha Madison.”

“Hello. How do you do? It’s very nice to meet you, Brock. Thank you for coming.” Sam said, not really knowing what to say.

“It’s very nice to meet you as well. Happy Birthday. Matt didn’t tell me when I spoke to him earlier or I would have brought you something.” Brock smiled down at the tiny, beautiful woman as he shook hands with her.

“Oh that’s not necessary. I don’t expect anyone to buy me presents but I’m very happy with the beautiful necklace Matt got for me. I’m so surprised by all of this. I just arrived here two days ago and no one knew it was my birthday yesterday.” Sam smiled up at the man and Matt heard his breath catch. She seemed to have that effect on everyone who saw her smile. Her beautiful face seemed to light up like the sun breaking through the clouds on a rainy day. She just radiated happiness.

“Can we talk after dinner, Matt?” Brock said before they moved on to the head of the table to sit down for dinner.

“Maybe for a few minutes but tonight is Sam’s night and I would have let you know it was her birthday if you didn’t hang up on me so fast.” Matt grinned at his friend. Brock had always been kind of abrupt and hanging up when he was done speaking was a bad habit because he didn’t know if the other person had anything more to say.

Matt guided Sam to the head of the table and then Natalie signaled the staff that they could begin serving the meal. Tonight they were not having a buffet but it was a real dinner, served by the household staff. They were having roast beef, broiled potatoes, sweet peas and candied yams, which was a real treat for Sam since she had never had candied yams before but discovered that she loved it. There were baskets of fresh rolls and two different kinds of bread. There was also champagne, which Sam decided she didn’t like, and the blueberry wine they had had last night. Sam stuck with the wine but made herself go slow. Getting drunk with Matt was one thing but the last thing she wanted to do was to get drunk in front of the entire pack and her in-laws and possibly make a fool of herself.

Everyone stopped by to wish her happy birthday and several people brought her gifts. She was very excited when Richard and Natalie gave her the new cell phone which Teddy promised to show her how to operate it. “It’s all charged up and I’ve programmed the numbers for all of the executive staff and Cook’s numbers into it so it’s ready to use. They all have your new number as well.” Teddy told her. Richard and Natalie had also given her a laptop that Teddy said would be ready for her tomorrow. He had only gotten it today and had not had time to finish setting it up for her to use yet.

After dinner, everyone sang Happy Birthday to her and she began to cry and could barely speak to thank everyone for making her feel so welcome when the song was over. But she closed her eyes and made her wish and blew out all of the candles. She prayed with all of her heart that her wish that Matt would mark her and make her his tonight. She should be getting her cycle soon and was hoping that they wouldn’t have to wait until that was over to complete the mating ritual.

She cut her cake and then the staff took over and distributed slices to everyone who wanted it. They had also prepared cheesecakes and fruit tarts and Sam tried some of all of it. She still couldn’t eat very much but appreciated all the work the staff had put into her birthday dinner.

Afterwards there was music and dancing and Sam had a wonderful time. She danced mostly with Matt but Richard, Stuart, Brock and Frank also led her around the floor or fast danced with her. Matt watched her with a smile as she danced with Frank. He was even taller than Matt and Sam looked even tinier than she normally did as Frank, who had very good natural rhythm and was light on his feet for a man so large, taught her a country line dance to Boot Scootin’ Boogie”. Sam also had a natural rhythm and moved smoothly for someone who claimed never to have danced before.

After Brock danced with Sam, Matt nodded to him to follow him outside and they walked out to the patio. Brock lit a cigarette and sat down on one of the planter benches as Matt leaned against the wall where he could see inside as he watched Sam enjoying herself dancing with Frank.

“You found yourself a real gem, Matt. Sam is beautiful. How did you two meet and where?” Brock said after he blew a large plume of smoke into the air. Matt told him about their meeting in the woods and wasn’t surprised at how Brock tensed up when he mentioned the rogue that had been going to attack his mate.

Brock listened quietly as Matt explained about how she had been treated by her Uncle and her former pack and about the scars on her back and noticed that Brock looked both sick and angry. Matt also brought him up to date on what they knew about the Red Moon pack and explained that his father had contacted the council, who would be there tomorrow. They would discuss their options and put a final plan of how they were going to handle the situation into place.

Matt also explained that he had contacted two of the packs living close to the Red Moon pack who were concerned about the attention the actions of the Red Moon pack were attracting to their kind. “I’ve never met them and I do not know much about them but they are smaller packs and just want to live in peace. Neither of them have admitted to taking in runaways but I would be surprised to find that runaways would stay so close to their former pack, knowing how crazy the leaders of the Red Moon pack have become. My guess is that they have traveled as far away as possible or that they have actually been killed.”

Matt told Brock of the burn pits they had found on the satellite images and that Sam had said that they were where her uncle and his cronies burned the bodies of anyone who opposed or disobeyed him. “From what Sam has described, it doesn’t take much to piss the man off. She told us that her Uncle Lou cut off the little finger of the cook because she didn’t make something the way he wanted it one night.”

“Sounds like he’s gone completely crazy. He’s more than gone rogue. He’s lost his mind. Sounds like he needs to be put down, not just arrested. What finally made Sam run?” Brock asked.

“She overheard her cousin and a couple of his friends talking about getting permission to make her a breeder and then claiming that she was too skinny and ugly for anyone to want to be with her for any thing more than a pussy to fuck!” Matt said and felt bile rise up his throat. Ever since she had told him that, he had wanted to kill her cousin as much as he wanted her Uncle. Matt saw Brock’s eyes get wide and he spit in the bushes as if to get the bad taste out of his mouth.

“What time is the meeting tomorrow?” Brock asked. He wanted to call his crew to just raid this place and put them all down but Matt was in charge here and he would follow his lead.

“As soon as the council members get here and are settled in. I’ll have to ask my dad what time that will be. Just do me one big favor tomorrow?” Matt asked.

“Sure dude. What’s that?” Brock replied.

“Try not to say anything or show too much disgust when you see Sam’s back? She’s very sensitive to people seeing it and it makes her feel ugly. I wish I could spare her having to do it but the council members will have to see it to believe it so she’s agreed to do it.” Matt said sadly.

“Sure big guy. I noticed you two haven’t marked each other yet. What’s up with that?” Brock asked.

“Sam is so tiny and when she first got here, she could barely eat anything. They had starved her for such a long time that Dr. Andy said her stomach has shrunk and it will take time for her to regain her normal appetite. She tires quickly and so far the only strong thing about her is her heart and her willpower to live.

I’ve been afraid to be with her yet but I’m hoping we can change that tonight. The full moon is soon and she will come into heat for the first time if we haven’t mated by then and for her it’s going to be exceptionally painful and dangerous because of her weakened condition. And I’ve been told that I need to mate and mark her before then.” Matt admitted.

Brock had been the first one he had ever talked to about sex when they were in high school together, in fact it was Brock that showed him his first porno movie. So now, talking with him about this didn’t seem so embarrassing and difficult. Even though Brock was human, he had lived around Matt and the other werewolves long enough to know about the mating process and that they did things slightly differently than humans did.

“Got a question for you. How do you ask a woman to marry you? How do you know what size ring to buy?” Matt asked and saw Brock get a big smile on his face.

“Wow. I didn’t think werewolves did the whole wedding and marriage thing. I thought you just found that special woman, fucked and bit and that was it. What’s making you change your mind and go this route?” Brock asked curiously.

“My mom said the memory of my dad proposing to her was one she would cherish forever, that it made her feel special and loved. I want to do that for Sam. She is the most important thing in my world now and I want to give her everything I can, especially new memories that will help her forget the horrors of her past.” Matt said.

“So the big, bad werewolf is really just a softy after all.” Brock said and quickly ducked when Matt threw a mock punch over his head.

“You’d have to experience what she makes me feel to understand it but I would do anything for her and to keep her safe and happy.” Matt smiled at his friend.

“I think it’s great, Matt. You deserve someone to make you happy like that.” Brock said.

“How about you? No future Mrs. Wright on the horizon for you?” Matt asked.

“No, not yet. I really don’t have much time for dating right now. I’m on the go, traveling a lot lately. We’ve had to go to Europe twice in the past couple of years for rogue problems there. We’re not easily recognizable there so we can usually manage to get in where other hunters can’t. We pose as campers or backpacking tourists and have taken down a couple of large rogue packs. Funny, it used to be that rogues were loners but in the past few years they seem to be forming packs or traveling in groups. One of the larger rogue packs we got last year was wiping out whole herds of farmers cattle and sheep, drawing attention to the local peaceful packs in the area. Something like what is happening with this Red Moon pack. They were not attacking for the food so much as just to kill for the sake of killing.” Brock said.

“Well, I’m glad you were able to end that problem. As much as I’m enjoying talking to you, I’d better get back to the party. It’s getting late. See you at breakfast tomorrow.” Matt said as he saw Sam looking around for him through the window.

For Sam, the night ended much too soon because she was having a great time but when the clock struck midnight, Matt claimed her and they said goodnight to everyone and went upstairs.
