Chapter 23

Matt pulled the box containing their rings out of his pocket and showed it to his mother and watched as her eyes got huge in her face. “What do you think? Do you think she will like it?” Matt asked anxiously.

Natalie instantly got big tears in her eyes as she took the box from him. “Oh Matt! It’s gorgeous! I think Sam will love it.” She said as she tilted the ring from one side to the other checking out the design. “How did you come up with this design?” Natalie asked in a whisper when she noticed that the engagement ring looked almost exactly like the tiara Sam had designed for her Luna crown.

Sam had drawn it while she had been laid up in bed with nothing to do and Natalie had ordered it to be made. She was supposed to be able to pick it up on the Wednesday before the ball.

“Well, I must admit that Sam had mentioned that she had liked Gloria Patterson and Connie Masters rings with their names engraved in calligraphy so I put our names on our wedding bands, hers on the yellow gold because of the color of her wolf and mine on the white gold as the White Feather pack alpha. I did the engagement ring part on my own. I wanted to have something to do with our White Feather mark so I made the base in yellow gold but the feathers in white gold. I think the jeweler did an exceptional job making the feathers look like feathers, don’t you?” Matt explained.

“You never saw the design done anywhere?” Natalie asked as she opened her drawer and pulled out a file folder of stuff she had been working on for the Luna ball.

“Nope! Why? Have you seen something similar to it before?” Matt asked worriedly. He had been so pleased with himself when he had come up with the design. His drawing skills were not the best but the jeweler had been great at understanding what it was he had wanted.

Natalie opened the file and showed Matt the drawing Sam had made of the tiara she had ordered and watched Matt’s jaw drop to his chest. “Who drew this?” He asked in amazement.

“Sam. This is what I ordered as her tiara for the Luna ceremony. She made this drawing while she was laid up in bed. Don’t tell her I showed you this. She wanted it to be a surprise.” Natalie told him.

“Don’t worry, I won’t. Act surprised when you see her ring?” Matt asked.

“Don’t worry, I will. When are you going to propose?” Natalie asked.

“I’ve been thinking about that. I know how dad asked you and I want to make it special like that for Sam but I don’t want to do the same thing. Frank suggested I do it in private so that Sam isn’t embarrassed with everyone watching. Any ideas?” Matt asked.

“Well, if you want to be alone. I wouldn’t wait until the Luna ball. She’s going to be very busy that day, as we all will be. Do you want to do it before or after the ball?” Natalie asked.

“I don’t think I have the patience to wait for long so in my book, the sooner the better.” Matt said with a slight blush. “I just keep trying to think of where. Somewhere nice but not public.”

“How about the lake? We’ve been having some beautiful sunsets lately. You could take her up there just before sunset and maybe have a picnic dinner and watch the sun go down? That would be very romantic.” Natalie suggested.

“I like that idea! Thanks mom!” Matt said

“Oh and Matt, before I forget, we need to have it bewitched so that she never has to take them off when she shifts. I’ll contact Louellen and ask her to come?”

“Does Sam have to be present for that? How fast can she come?” Matt asked.

“Let me call her and find out.” Natalie said and pulled out her cell phone and looked up Louellen’s phone number in her contacts list and hit the call button. Before Natalie could say a word, Louellen squealed in her ear.

“Natalie! How good to hear from you! I can be there in 5 minutes. Stay right where you are. I’m very excited to meet that good looking son of yours!” Louellen said and then hung up.

Natalie laughed and told Matt “She’s on her way. She’ll be here in 5 minutes and she wants to meet you. She is an amazing woman!”

“Wow. I’ve never met a witch before and now I will have met two in one month.” Matt said.

“When are you thinking about having the wedding?” Natalie asked.

“Now that is totally up to Sam. Whatever she wants is fine with me.” Matt said.

“Well, I hope we can get it done before June. Your father and I want to leave for Europe after your birthday.” Natalie said and then turned her head when she sensed something.

Suddenly a blue mist filled the room and a beautiful woman in a long, flowing blue dress appeared in the middle of the room. She reminded Matt very much of Zella and wondered if they were related.

“Natalie! How good to see you again! And this just has to be your son, Matthew! My, but he is a big one isn’t he? And so handsome!” Louellen said as she walked towards them with her hands outstretched. Natalie caught her hands and they air kissed each other’s cheeks. Louellen’s eyes never left Matt. She sensed that he was going to be a very powerful Alpha one day.

“Where are the rings?” Louellen asked.

Matt passed her the small black box that held their wedding rings and Louellen smiled. “Very nice! You have good taste in jewelry, Matt. Did you design this yourself?”

Matt had a big smile on his face from her praise and admitted that he had.

Louellen removed the rings from the box and held them between her palms and closed her eyes for a moment as she whispered the spell. She opened her eyes and smiled at him. “You are going to have a long happy life together and she will be completely healed soon but she’s more than ready for you now.” Louellen told him as she returned the rings to him and then she and Natalie started to laugh as Matt turned about 5 shades of red and his mouth looked like a fish out of water as he gulped air.

When he had recovered, he asked “Excuse me for asking but you look like another witch that I met earlier this month. Do you by chance know Zella?” Matt asked.

“Zella is my sister! You must have met her when she went to help Zander Black. They have a long standing friendship but between you and me, I think that if Zander had not found Sandra, he and my sister would have married.” Louellen shared with them and Matt could not argue that there had been some chemistry between the two.

“Well, I must be off. So much to do between now and Hallow’s Eve. Our whole coven is going to be here this year since there will be a Hunter’s Moon this year.” Louellen said as she began to step away from them.

“Louellen, we are having the ball to announce Matt’s mate as the new Luna the night before All Hallow’s Eve. I do hope you will come? I believe your sister has been invited as well. She has promised to make a spectacular entrance.” Natalie grinned at her.

“Oh, I would love to and that sounds like fun! I’ll contact her as soon as I get home and maybe we can plan something together. Oh and May 8th will be a beautiful day for a wedding.” Louellen said as she lifted her hand and then faded away.

“Man, they sure know how to make an entrance and an exit! Quite impressive for sure.” Matt said, shaking his head. “Well if I’m going to have a picnic dinner, I’d better go talk to Cook. See you later!” Matt said and gave her a kiss on her cheek. He slipped the rings back in his pocket and left her office.

He ran down to the kitchen and asked Cook to make him a picnic basket with a chilled bottle of the blueberry wine that Sam liked so much. He told her he’d be back for it in a little while. He talked to Grace and asked her to bring a picnic blanket to the kitchen and then he went to see about finding some lanterns.

When he asked Jerry, their head maintenance man where they were, Jerry asked. “The ones we used on the fourth of July got broken and I haven’t replaced them yet since as far as I know, we’re not doing anything outdoors at this time of the year. Luna Natalie didn’t want them for the Halloween party. She had us use fairy lights. I’ve got some extra strands of those if you want.”

“Great! That will work even better. Do me a favor, take them up to the lake and string them around the branches of that big Oak tree near the lake over the grassy area. I need it done as soon as possible please. Can you do that?” Matt asked.

“Sure, Alpha. What’s going on?” Jerry couldn’t help but ask.

“Going to do something special for your new Luna. Now, hurry. How are you going to make it so they light up? There’s no power up there.” Matt asked curiously.

“I’ll hook them up to batteries. You’ll just have to twist the wires to the contact when you want them to come on. If I turn them on now, I’m afraid the battery will run out before you need them to be lit.” Jerry said with a grin. He had never realized that his Alpha would be such a love sick puppy when it came to his mate but then having seen and met her, he completely understood why.

“Mums the word, Jerry. I don’t want her to find out about this. OK?” Matt said.

“I’ll take care of this myself.” Jerry said and twisted his fingers over his lips like he was locking them.

“Thanks!” Matt said. “I’ll be up soon with the rest of the stuff but if you can get that done right now, I’d really appreciate it.”

Matt located a battery operated CD player and picked out some music from his collection and put them in a carry all along with the picnic blanket that Grace had found.

He collected the picnic basket from Cook and carried everything up to the lake. He used his alpha speed because the day was going to be over in a couple of hours and he wanted to be there with Sam just before the sun began to set.

Jerry had just finished hanging the fairy lights when he arrived and showed Matt where he had put the batteries so that when it got dark, Matt would not be trying to trace wires in order to turn them on.

Thankfully there was no wind today but it had already begun to get colder at night so Matt decided to build a small campfire for later. He spread out the blanket and hung the picnic basket from a tree branch so that no animals could get into it before he got back. Once everything was set, he ran back to the property and went looking for Sam.

He found her in the clinic, still visiting with Sara as Dr. Bob checked Sara out. Apparently he was going to let her go home today. He knew Frank was going to be really happy tonight!

When Matt stepped into the room, he started to say that it was good to hear laughter coming from this room for a change but as soon as they all saw him, they all laughed even harder.

“What? What’s so funny?” Matt said, becoming offended that they seemed to be laughing at him.

“We were just discussing Halloween costumes. How would you feel about going as Peter Pan?” Sam asked, trying to keep a straight face until Matt got a horrified look on his face and yelled “NO WAY!”

Then he saw the humor in the image of him dressed like that and joined in the laughter. It felt good and leave it to Sam to completely change his attitude.

“Are you getting to go home today, Sara?” Matt asked.

Sara and Sam both looked at Dr. Bob who had just finished removing the bandage from Sara’s back. He took a minute or two to examine all of the nicely healing cuts and said “I don’t see why not, so long as you are careful, you should be fine. Just don’t get these wet and promise to come in so we can change your bandage every day, I’ll let you go.” Dr. Bob smiled at her.

“HOORAY! Freedom, here I come.” Sara said as she threw her fist into the air. Thankfully the move did not open any of the wounds which made Dr. Bob even more confident about his decision. She had been healing nicely and he could only assume that the wolfsbane had been old or it had been a long time since the whip had been soaked. When Sam had been beaten before, it had taken about two months to get to the point that Sara was at now.

But he also had to consider that Sara had been allowed to eat better than Sam had so she was not as physically weak as Sam had always been. The only decent meals she ever got were when she was in the clinic. Dr. Bob had refused to starve her and made sure she had food, even if he had to share his own.

Matt didn’t even wait to ask but linked Frank “Come collect your mate. She’s being released to go home.”

“That’s great! Sara, tomorrow we’ll.........” Sam never got to finish what she was going to say as Frank rushed into the room, panting hard. He looked around at everyone with a wide happy smile on his face. “Can I take her out of here now?” Frank asked, hopefully.

“Just let me get a fresh bandage on her and then she’ll be ready to go.” Dr. Bob told him.

“Sara, it looks like you are in good hands. I’ll come check on you tomorrow. OK?” Sam said as she slipped her hand into Matt’s.

“Thanks Sam. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Sara winked at her and smiled at her mate.

Sam and Matt left the clinic and Matt told her “I’ve got a surprise for you. Want to go for a run?”

“Sure!” Sam smiled up at him. He seemed to be in a much better mood this afternoon and even though she didn’t know why, it made her happy. They entered the trees and stripped, tying their clothes around their legs for when they reached where they were going.

They took their time running through the woods. The autumn leaves coated the forest floor and the sun filtered through the bare branches, warming the air around them and creating beautiful highlights among the trees.

When they reached the lake, Matt shifted and Sam followed. They reluctantly pulled on their clothes because it was getting a little chilly. Sam was surprised when she saw the picnic basket hanging in the tree with the blanket on the ground but Matt took her hand, interlacing their fingers as he pulled her forward.

“What’s this?” Sam asked with a smile.

“I just wanted some alone time with my woman. Seems like ever since we got back that we’ve not had much time to ourselves. We’ve both been so busy lately that I’ve barely seen you and I’ve missed you.” Matt said as he carefully pulled her into his arms and lowered his head to give her the sweetest kiss, nibbling her lips, sliding his tongue over them until she let him in.

Sam slowly sucked his tongue into her mouth, sliding her tongue around his and Matt felt his crotch instantly get hard. Her hands had been on his chest, then slid up his pecs, catching his nipples and making him hold her tighter but still being careful not to touch her shoulder. He cupped the back of her head in one hand as he shifted her so that he could deepen their kiss as her fingers tangled in his hair, pulling him down as she rose on her toes, trying to get closer to him.

A need for air caused them to break their kiss and Matt rested his forehead on hers as he whispered “Goddess, I’ve missed you so much!” He could smell her arousal and his dick was beginning to throb with need to be inside of her but he forced himself to slow down. He had brought her up here for a reason. Slowly he pulled back and asked, “Are you hungry? I’ve brought dinner for us. I just couldn’t stand sitting at the dining table and sharing you with anyone tonight.”

“I could eat. Natalie and I stopped and got salads for lunch in town today and it didn’t stick with me for very long.” Sam smiled up at him.

Matt took the basket out of the tree and set it on the blanket and then sat down and began to unpack the veritable feast that Cook had put together for them. There were fresh rolls that were still slightly warm, slices of lean roast beef, two different kinds of cheese, grapes, strawberries and soft gooey chocolate chip cookies. She had provided two wine glasses and a chilled bottle of blueberry wine and some bottles of water.

They chatted as they made their sandwiches and began to eat, talking about all the things they had been doing lately. He told her about the new buildings that were going to have to wait until next spring to be built because the snow would be here soon but they had planned to do some renovations inside the pack house too. Some of the previous guest bedrooms had been converted to hold members of Sam’s old pack but only as a temporary solution.

Sam brought him up to date on the plans for the Luna ball and asked him if he had a tux.

“I guess I’d better try on my old one. I haven’t worn it for a long time and I’ve gotten a little bigger since then. You weren’t serious about us dressing up as Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, were you?” Matt asked.

“Hahaha. That was all your mom’s idea but if we don’t, I don’t know what to wear to something like that. I haven’t gone trick or treating or been to any kind of party since I was just a kid. I mean, I bought a dress for the Luna announcement but I don’t have a costume for the Halloween Party. What were you thinking of wearing?” Sam asked.

“How about Nordic warriors? They had male and female warriors. We could dress as a pair of warriors. Or a Roman god and goddess? You would make an awesome Athena, the goddess of war! Or better yet, Venus, the goddess of love.

“Oh, I like that idea better! The fairy outfit Natalie wants me to wear is cute and all but it makes me look like a child. People already don’t take me seriously because I’m so short and strangers tend to treat me like a child. I’m sick of it.” Sam said.

“Well, after the Luna ball, no one is going to look at you as a child anymore. Once you take the oath, you will receive my mom’s Luna power, which is the same as when I received my dad’s alpha power.” Matt told her.

“Really? Wow. I didn’t know that. That’s cool.” Sam said with a smile. “Will you go to town with me to look at costumes tomorrow? We have to decide soon or all the good costumes are going to be gone. When we get home tonight, you need to try on your old tux and make sure it fits because you might need a new one. I’m not going to get all dressed up and stand in front of everyone with you in high-water pants and a coat you can’t even button closed in the front.” Sam said determined.

“Sure. I’d been thinking about it but haven’t had much time to really give it any serious consideration. One year my mom made my dad dress up to match her and we had our party with them dressed as Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy. My dad was not a happy camper at first but then acted like a clown all night. Us kids thought it was great!” Matt chuckled at the memory.

They finished eating and put the leftover food stuff back in the basket and Matt poured them more wine. Matt was beginning to wish he had not eaten because his stomach had butterflies that were turning into bats as the sun began to slip behind the mountain.

Sam leaned back on her hands and looked out across the lake. The sky was a glorious display of pink, orange, yellow and red edged with pale lavender and blues that was reflected in the calm still waters of the lake. It was so beautiful but in Matt’s mind not nearly as beautiful as her.

As it began to get dark, Matt stood up and turned on the fairy lights that Jerry had installed and Sam squealed in delight as she rolled onto her knees and clapped her hands. “OH Matt! This evening has been so nice and now you’ve made it magical.”

Matt smiled at her as she looked up at him. Then her eyes got wide as he stuck his hand in his pocket and brought out the little black box, got down on one knee and took her hand in his. “Samantha Madison, I fell in love with you the minute I saw you come on to my land and in getting to know you, I’ve fallen in love with you more and more every day. This weekend you become my Luna and I’m hoping that tonight you will agree to be my wife. Will you marry me, Sam?” Matt said, his voice getting shaky at the end as emotion began to overtake him.

“Oh yes! I will be proud to be your wife! I love you so much!” Sam said as she threw her arms around his neck and smashed her mouth to his.
