Chapter 1

This is book 2 of The His Second Chance series.

I’ve got a crush on you.

MY BEST FRIEND was having a baby. To say I was excited was an understatement. Today was Ava and Jaxon’s baby shower and I couldn’t wait to see them both.

I know Ava was upset and scared at first when she found out she was pregnant but I think anyone would be, especially being so young.

But I knew they could both do it, from what Ava has told me Jaxon has been incredibly supportive.

I’m just so glad that he was there for her.

I look at myself in the mirror and take a few moments to admire my outfit.

Wearing a black bardot top and denim skirt, with a pair of high top black converse. It was approaching summer, so the weather was glorious. My blonde hair loosely curled, strands falling on my shoulders.

I quickly grab my bag and leave my dorm room. The drive to their house wasn’t far and I was happy that she was close by now.

When she was kidnapped and we were all led to believe she left without saying a word, I was heartbroken. Ava and I have been friends since we were four. We grew up together. When she left I missed her so much, I felt so lost.

I was so confused. I was so hurt.

Ava wasn’t just my friend, she was like my sister. She hated her foster home and found herself sleeping at mine most weekends.

My parents loved her, they pretty much thought she was their second daughter. I wasn’t okay for a good few months after she left. I struggled in school, I fucked up some of my finals.

But I still managed to get into college and I was so proud of myself. A new beginning I thought.

Then when I received that message from her on Facebook, I was convinced it was some sick joke.

Someone was toying with me.

But then she FaceTimed me and I saw her face. I cried. I cried because I was so happy.

At the time I didn’t even care that she had left me, I felt no anger towards her whatsoever. Although I know that I should have been angry that she left with no explanation.

I just wanted my best friend back. That is how much she meant to me.

When she told me about being kidnapped and abused, my heart sank to my stomach. I knew deep down in my heart she would never have just left. Then I think about what she possibly could have been through. Some people in this world really can be fucking cruel.

I pull up to their house and when I say house, I mean mansion. I notice other cars are already here. There are baby pink balloons on the door that are gently blowing in the breeze.

As I approach the door I press the doorbell, taking a step back I wait patiently. I hear fumbling on the other side before it is swung open.

Jaxon stands there and he instantly smiles, a kitchen cloth between his hands.

“Hey Kayleigh,” he says as he holds the door with one hand.

I smile. “Hey,”

He takes a step out of the way. “Come in,” he says as I walk through the door.

“Thank you,” I say politely and he shuts the door behind me.

“Ava is just in the kitchen,” Jaxon says and I nod at his words.

My feet carry me across the hall and into the kitchen, following the sound of talking. There are a few people standing around the island but I didn’t recognise anyone.

I spot Ava standing with her back to me.

Taking quick steps towards her and I gently take her wrist in my hand.

“Hey,” I say quietly.

She turns to me instantly and her eyes light up.

“Hey!” She yells instantly, bringing me into a tight hug. I try to be careful of her bump not squeezing her too hard.

When I pull away from her I smile and look down to her stomach. Even though she was almost eight months gone, her bump was pretty much nonexistent.

“You’re still so tiny!” I comment as I reach forward to place my hand onto her.

She laughs. “I know sometimes Jax doesn’t think I’m pregnant.”

A bump was there but she definitely didn’t look heavily pregnant. It was probably because she had such a tiny frame.

“Here I got you this,” I say as I hand her a little gift bag. “Well it’s for the baby actually.”

“Aw Kay! That’s so sweet of you, thank you.” She says as she takes it from my fingers.

“Come let’s go get you a drink,” she takes my hand and we go round to the other side of the island.

She places the gift bag down onto the side with the other presents. Then she takes a champagne flute and pours me a glass.

Handing it to me she smiles. “Thank you,” I say politely as I take a sip.

“So how have you been? How’s the pregnant life?” I question.

“I’ve been well thanks, but being pregnant is so taxing!” She exclaims. “Like people always say how tiring and exhausting it is and boy are they right!”

“Not long to go now. Have you thought of any names yet?” I ask and Ava hums.

A hand finds her hips. “We have a few names but we aren’t sure ye-”

She’s instantly cut off by Jaxon’s presence.

“Hey, could I steal you for two secs?” He asks town towards her.

She nods. “Is everything okay?” She questions, her voice sounding slightly worried.

“Course baby, just need you to help me with something.” He says his hand sliding it’s way around her waist.

Ava’s attention then turns back to me. “Sorry Kay, I’ll be right back.”

I nod towards her and watch as she walks away with Jaxon. Turning back round to the kitchen and realise that I don’t know anyone here. Everyone was chatting away and I was just standing here with my champagne.

Pursing my lips as I turn to look out the window. Maybe I should go touch up my makeup... why was I so awkward in these damn situations?

I nod to myself and decide to just go to the bathroom. Turning sharply, my body collides into something incredibly hard.

My eyes clamp shut for a second in shock, my champagne spilling out the glass onto my hand.

I go to apologise to whoever I’ve just bumped into, then I look up into his warm brown eyes.

My voice is trapped in my throat. It was like the first time I ever saw him, I was in absolute awe. I still am.

He’s stupidly gorgeous.

Like breathtakingly gorgeous.

My hands begin to get clammy and before I know it my glass has slipped from my fingers and shatters down onto the floor.

The liquid splashing up both our legs.

I jump back instantly.

Kayden does the same and looks down to the floor. My heart is hammering in my chest. God, I was so clumsy.

“Fuck,” I curse. “Shit.”

I quickly grab some paper towels from the side and bend down to the floor.

“I’m so sorry,” I say as my voice shakes slightly.

I look at the smashed glass and begin to pick it up with my hands carefully. My wrist is instantly gripped, Kayden has sunk down to my level.

I look up into his eyes, our faces merely inches apart. I shouldn’t but I take a moment to admire his face.

He has the most plump lips I have ever seen, his jaw line was defined, his messy brown hair falling slightly onto his forehead.

I snap out of my trance and quickly shake my head.

I blink a few times. “Huh?” I say.

Then he smiles, showing his dimples in his cheeks.

Fuck me.

“I said you’ll cut yourself,” he says and I nod at his words.

Then I realise he still has a grip on my hand and I reluctantly pull away.

I clear my throat. “Have you got a brush or something?” I manage to say without completely fucking up.

Why did he make me so damn nervous?

Maybe I was intimidated by his undeniable good looks. Or maybe because I was ridiculously attracted to him.

But not just attracted, sexually attracted.

“Uh yeah,” he says as he stands and opens a cupboard under the sink.

I watch him as he does so. He’s wearing a black fitted t-shirt that is clinging to his biceps that were impressively big. I could see his muscles clearly and just looking at him made me feel like an excited school girl admiring their crush.

“Here,” he says. He reaches into the cupboard and pulls out a dustpan and brush.

“Thanks,” I smile as I reach up to him to take it.

He shakes his head. “I got it,” He says sinking down my level again.

I furrow my eyebrows towards him. “You just clean up the champagne,”

“Sure,” I nod. I grab the bits of tissue I left on the floor.

Kayden begins to brush away the glass into the dustpan.

“You know I was more than capable of doing that...” I mumble as I press the towels down to the floor.

His eyes flick up to mine, a playful smile on his lips. “After you just casually dropped a whole glass of champagne?” He quirks an eyebrow at me. “I think not.”

“I’m not clumsy, just to clarify.” I huff out.

Then when I look back to him he’s grinning at me, showing his white pearly teeth. “I bet,” he breathes out.

I can’t stop staring at him and boy, I clearly have no shame.

“Why do you keep looking at me like that?” He questions and my blood runs cold.

My face is definitely on fire.

He sweeps the last bit of glass into the pan and I reach forward to get the last bit of spillage.

“Like what?” I shrug cluelessly. I avoid his gaze because I am a terrible liar.

I can see him smirk out the corner of my eye. “You know what I’m talking about,” he says as he stands up.

I pick up the wet tissues and throw them in the bin. Kayden stands dangerously close to me, there is a glint of something in his eyes when he looks at me.

His arms then cross over his broad chest. I try my best not to look. Shaking my head. “I have no idea what you’re talking about,”

“Well you either find me so unbelievably attractive o—”

I instantly cut him off. “Pfffft don’t flatter yourself.” I say quickly, noticing how dry my mouth has become.

I can actually feel my pulse in my throat. Why was I so goddamn nervous?

He laughs at my words, his face full of amusement. “It’s a joke Kayleigh,” he says.

There is something about the way he says my name that sends shivers down my spine. Then I watch as his eyes flick down my body and back up to my face.

Yep, my face was definitely on fire.

Kayden turns away from me slightly to pick up the champagne bottle, he pours a glass.

“Here,” he says as he hands me another.

I smile. “Thank you,” I say taking it from him.

He reaches forward, letting his hand rest on my arm. My heart rate increases.

“I’ll catch you in a bit, yeah?”

I nod. “Sure,” I say as I watch him walk past me.

I make sure he’s out of view before I place the flute to my lips and I down the glasses contents.

It was so fizzy and made my eyes water, but boy I was desperate. I turn to the counter and rest my hands onto it, sighing deeply.

I was really going to need that... or seven.

Wish me luck.
