DUKE Chapter 3

I grabbed the bag from the floor and gestured her to my desk. "I won't stay long. I know you're working," she was so sweet. She hasn't changed since I met her. I got a whiff of the deliciousness from the bag. "I made you some empanadas," she sat on one of the chairs.

Empanadas were Emilio's favorite dish, they are a traditional Mexican dish that is a baked or fried turnover pastry. It's filled with ground beef and diced vegetables, it depends who makes them. There are many ways to make empanadas but these were Emilio's favorite.

My throat constricted and my eyes got watery again. "Thank you. I know it was Emilio's favorite dish."

Her chocolate eyes got glossy but she still brightened the room with her smile. "Yes, they were. I made enough that you can share with some of your fellow workers," she always thought of everyone but I wasn't sharing.

"I think I'll take them home," I finally smirked at her. She giggled.

She reminded me so much of Emilio, she had the same structure of eyes as him and the same dimple. Emilio got more of his looks from his dad, Brian. But it was no doubt he got his personality from his mom. His dad is wonderful but Esmeralda was a saint, she accepted Emilio for who he was and loved him deeply. Emilio was their only child so it was devastating when they got the news.

I took a peek inside the bag and it was filled with more food on the side. It smelled delicious and made my mouth water. I can't wait to go to lunch.

"How have you been?" She asked sweetly.

"Some days are good, some are great but most of the time I can't deal a day without him," my words stuttered.

"I know what you mean. I stare at his photos for hours and break down into tears. He was my baby. Mi hijo bello." She looked down as a tear dropped onto her jeans.

"I broke down today as well today in the morning."

"I know me too but I heard his voice. He told me to be happy, that he was in a better place," I passed her a box of Kleenex. She wiped her nose and under her eyes.

It was silent for a couple of minutes but she broke the silence. "Remember when you first came over. Emilio was so nervous to introduce his boyfriend to us but between me and you," she leaned in and whispered. "I already knew he was gay," we both laughed softly. Her laughter brought me joy.

How could I forget that time? We have been dating for a couple of weeks. He first asked me to be his boyfriend and then he took me over to meet his parents. I was nervous as hell but all I wanted was to be with him, my Emilio.

*SENIOR YEAR*

He parked his truck under a tree outside on the street. The sun was coming down on the horizon. Emilio wanted me to meet his parents tonight so he picked me up from my house. He put his truck in park and turned on the ignition. He glanced at me and grabbed my hand over the console.

His face was covered by the shadow of the tree branches but his emerald eyes glistened like exotic jewels. "Baby, I've never been so happy with someone. I want you to be my boyfriend," his deep voice made the tiny hairs on my back jump up. He bit his bottom lip and smirked at me. I've been wanting him to ask those official words since forever.

"I'll think about it," I teased as I adjusted my glasses.

"Oh really," he came over the console and started to tickle me. His hand moved all over my lower body as I laughed loudly.

"Stop it, stop it please," I laughed until he was on top of me. His lower body leaning against the console. His heart shape lips are right in front of me. He grazed his lips on mine. He sucked on my bottom lip and smirked. "Be my boyfriend, babe," he asked again and I wrapped my arms around his neck.

"Of course, you don't even have to ask," he dipped into my lips again. His hands roamed all over my body. He groaned into my lips.

"Ugh. We should go inside before my mom blows up my phone, she's excited to meet you and she made my favorite Mexican dish, empanadas," I didn't know exactly what that was but I don't mind trying new foods. His mom was from Mexico and his dad was Caucasian, I think Emilio told me his dads parents was from Italy but I wasn't sure

We finally got out of the truck while he held my hand tightly with his. He leaned in and kissed my cheek. "They are going to love you," he said and that made me feel more at ease.

He opened the door as we both walked in, the air was filled with the deliciousness of food. I heard voices coming from the kitchen. A beautiful woman came from the halls followed by a handsome man. Wow, he looks like his dad but has his mom's shape eyes.

"Mom, dad. This is Duke, my boyfriend," I love hearing those words 'boyfriend', it has a nice ring to it. My hands were sweaty and my heart was pounded fast on the cavity of my chest. I gave them my best cheeky smile but his mom pulled me into a hug.

"Oh my goodness, you're so handsome. I'm Esmeralda and this is my husband Brian," she had a beautiful Spanish accent. She pulled back and gestured at this tall man. He leaned in with a huge smile and shook my hand.

"We've been hearing so much about you, Duke. My son is pretty much in love with you," my eyes widen and I glanced at Emilio whose cheeks were beyond red.

Esmeralda hit him on the stomach. "Honey, that's something Emilio has to tell Duke, not you," she scolded him as he scratched the back of his neck. I glanced over at Emilio and his cheeks were a crimson tone.

I grabbed his hand and gripped it tightly.

"Emilio, take Duke to the dining table. I'll be right out with your dad," they disappeared back into the hallway and to the kitchen. Emilio held my hand as we entered the dining table. It was already set with expensive china plates and silverware. He opened a chair for me while his dimple appeared on his cheek.

He pulled me closer and kissed my lips. "You're my everything. I want to be with you forever," I was stunned by his potent kiss. He pulled away as his emerald eyes burned with desire. "Even though my dad told you before me," his finger gently went up and down my cheek. "I love you with all my heart."

"I love you, too," my heart was bouncing rapidly and my hands tingled like tiny bolts.

"I know we've only known each other for a couple of weeks but I know I want you in my life. I don't want anyone other than you," my eyes filled with tears because he was saying all the right words. He had a heart of gold and no one will ever fill it as he has.

I couldn't speak because he took my breath away, my words were frozen from his spell and I wanted more. I pulled him by his neck and I locked my lips with his. He injected me with love and warmth. I never in a million years thought I would have the captain of the football kissing me in his house.

I pulled away as I noticed his swollen lips. His grin was from ear to ear. How was I so lucky to have him?

"And here we go," Esmeralda appeared with a glass dish filled with what looked like turnover pastries. The golden pastries were baked to perfection and my mouth watered. I don't know what they taste like but I'm pretty sure I would enjoy them.

Esmeralda and Brian sat across from us while Emilio held my hand underneath the table. I liked that he respected his parents. I'm pretty sure his parents wouldn't mind seeing us holding hands but I'm glad I was with him regardless.

Most of the empanadas were eaten by Emilio. I noticed he unbuttoned his jeans. He still had a flat stomach but he can eat. "Mom, those were delicious," he rubbed his satisfied stomach.

"Aww sweetie, I made them with love. How did you enjoy them, Duke?" She took a sip of her wine.

"They were delicious," the meat had so much flavor and the baked dough melted on my tongue. It was heaven in a pastry. She even made us sweet rice water called horchata. It was refreshing to taste an authentic Mexican dish.

"I'm glad you enjoyed them," her sweet voice was contagious. She kissed Brian on the cheek and Emilio grabbed my hand again.

"Can we be excused?" Emilio asked his parents.

"Of course but it's a school night so until 9 pm," Esmeralda gave him the pointed gaze.

"Thank you so much for dinner," we both got up and I started to pick up my plate.

"Oh dear no, I'll clean up, go hang out with Emilio," she stood up and started cleaning.

"It was nice to meet you, Mr. Michelson," I waved at his dad.

"Brian, please. It looks like you are part of the family," he glanced at Emilio who had a huge smirk on his face.

We left the dining room and went upstairs. He held me by the waist as he lead me up the stairs. He kissed my neck. "You drive me crazy. I want you every day and every night," he opened his door to his room and shut it quickly.

He turned on the light. His room was so well organized. His bed was perfectly made. His drawer had a couple of picture frames including one of us. I walked towards his drawer and picked up the frame. It was a selfie we took while we laid on the beach. He was kissing my cheek while I had a cheeky smile. He had gone into his closest.

"You framed it?" I asked and that's when I saw a small box in his hand.

"Of course, that was one of my favorite days," he stepped closer and handed me the tiny black box. "It's nothing but I wanted to give you a piece of me."

I put the frame down and grabbed the velvet black box. I opened it and my eyes widened. It was a silver necklace with the initials E&D dangling in the middle. "It's very beautiful," I delicately grabbed it as he grabbed my hand.

"It's beautiful just like you. One day I'm going to marry you," he got closer while I held the necklace tightly in my hand.

"Promise?"

"Yes, I promise. You'll be Mr. Michelson," we both chuckled, and then his lips locked with mine. We kissed for as long as I can remember.

*PRESENT DAY*

"I remembered he begged me for you to spend the night. I had to call you mom but it was obvious you two were inseparable. He loved you with all his heart," her words choked again and that made my tears come out.

"I never got to say goodbye to him. I remember that morning when he left to work. He had a halo around him and he gave me the most passionate kiss ever. It's like he was saying goodbye," I slammed my elbows on my desk and covered my eyes. "He called me that he was going to be late for dinner and that he loved me. I just don't know how to get over him, his love, his kisses," I cried so hard in my hand. How much does my heart have to endure?

I felt her hands pull at my wrist. She kneeled in front of me and cupped my cheek. "Mijo (son), I miss him deeply as well but he wouldn't want you to live your life in sorrow and sadness. He would want you to be happy. Find yourself again and maybe you can find someone else."

"I want, Emilio," my lips trembled.

"I know, sweetie but he's gone. Once you accept that he's gone then you'll let him go. Come here sweetie," she pulled me into a hug. A sense of relief took over, something warm grazed my cheek.

Emilio was near and that tugged a nerve in my heart.
