Chapter 32

POV: Aidan

Sweat dripped in my face and the soreness of my knuckles indicated that it was time for me to call it a day.

Stepping back from Xavier, I bounced on my heels to warm down.

“That felt good today, X. I think we found a new sweet spot”. Xavier was always trying to find new sweet spots for me as he called them. He was big on challenging me, never letting me feel too comfortable in my current technique. Whenever I felt like he was challenging me too much, he encouraged me to meet him at a sweet spot. Somewhere that challenge he was presenting me with could push my body without making me feel like injury was inevitable.

He took the pads off his hands and reached for my water bottle to hand to me. “I’d agree kid. Don’t get too comfortable though. You’ve got a fight coming up in a couple of weeks that we need to work on your blocking for. I don’t want you leaving that thick skull of yours so exposed anymore. After all, we’ve got to keep your face pretty for that girl of yours”, he joked with me.

I laughed but shook my head. “Nah, I don’t think she’d care too much. She would be more worried about me being hurt”.

As he raised his eyebrows in surprise, I realized we had been talking about two different girls. “So is it serious then? You and Liz?“.

I didn’t know what to say so I chose to say nothing. Shrugging my shoulders, I jumped down from the ring and made my way over to the locker room.

“Don’t forget to pick up sandwiches for tomorrow!“, he called out to me. I raised my hand in acknowledgment as I disappeared behind the locker room door.

Tuesday’s were our film days and we usually took turns bringing food as we would often analyze fights for hours. Since it was my turn, X had requested I pick up sandwiches from Joe’s. I swear that man was a god with deli meat.

As I got in the private shower, I went over my plans for the rest of the day.

Or I tried to before different thoughts started working their way in.

After hanging out with Lark on Saturday, Luka came back looking happier than he has in nine years. After everything happened, he lost some of that joy that made him who he was. Only putting on a happy face to appease everyone else around him. When he came through the elevator doors though, he had a smile on his face that wasn’t fake. It was a smile just for himself. When I asked him about it he only said that working on their projects had gone really well. The look on his face told me there was more to the story but I didn’t press him.

Luka was happy again. Truly happy. That’s all that mattered.

The warm water cascaded over me and helped my muscles relax from the workout. I had always loved showers and being an athlete meant I needed to take lots of them. It wasn’t so much showering that I loved but the time that I got to be by myself and allow my mind to wander.

I had always been quiet. Most people thought it was intimidating. The strong, silent type was a phrase I heard girls use to describe me to their friends from time to time. It was just that people tended to overwhelm me.

Ironic seeing as how my chosen profession put me amongst large crowds of people regularly. The only people I ever truly felt comfortable being around for long periods were Luka, Greyson, and Colt.

And Lark.

I rubbed my hands across my face as I thought about X’s earlier comment. The fact that I had immediately thought of Lark as ‘my girl’ meant something that I wasn’t quite ready to admit yet. I hadn’t seen her for a few days and I missed her.

She brought a sense of calm to me that not even the guys could do. Her strength gave me stability and I craved her presence now that she was finally back in my life.

Thoughts of her swirled around my head.

Her eyes, her smile, her lips.

Her body.

F*ck.

I closed my eyes and let my head fall back into the water. I clenched my fists as I tried to fight my body’s response to thinking about her. I knew I was fighting a losing battle though.

My c*ck stiffened and I let out a quick breath as I grasped it in my hand and squeezed lightly. God, I was hard.

The shrill ringing of my phone broke me out of the haze and I instantly shook my head.

She’s not your girl, Aidan. You’re with Liz.

I quickly turned off the water, grabbed my towel, and rushed to pick up the phone before the call stopped. Liz’s face stared up at me and guilt instantly overcame me.

“Hey Liz, what’s up?“. I hoped she couldn’t hear the breathless in my voice.

“Aid! Hi babe, it’s good to hear your voice. I was just checking to make sure we were still on for tonight. Dinner with my friends remember? You promised you would meet them since they’ve been dying to meet you”, she spoke quickly. It sounded as though she was walking somewhere, seeing as I could hear cars honking in the background.

“Yeah we’re still on for tonight. What time do you want me at the club?“. I hated clubs. Too many people and bodies constantly pressing closer. Liz loved them though. I think she just liked being in places where she knew she would get attention.

“Hmmm, how about nine. That should give us plenty of time to make our way there from the restaurant. Oh, and do you think you could bring some tickets as well to your next match? Preferably front row if you can”. Even though she worded it as a question it seemed like more of a veiled expectation.

“I’ll check with Colt today to see if there are any left. It’s only two weeks out Lizk, I don’t know if there are going to be any open seats for this one”.

“Just try, Aidan. That’s all I’m asking for. Alright I’ve got to go! See you later, love you”. That last part she said quietly. I knew she wanted me to say it back. She had been wanting me to say it to her since she first said it to me a few months ago.

It never felt right though.

“Bye Liz. Have a good day and I’ll see you later,” I said.

I set my phone back down on the bench as I grabbed my clothes to get dressed. Liz and I’s relationship wasn’t perfect but it also wasn’t terrible. Until recently everything had been going fine.

Something wasn’t working for me anymore.

I had a feeling I knew what that something was.
