Chapter Nine

Roger and the uber band have been recording by day and putting the finishing touches on his daughter’s room by night. The date for Keely’s c section is quickly approaching as Wendy and the boys are fussing over her constantly. With the O’Reilly’s in town, the Greyson’s are a constant presence as well. Keely has taken to shutting the ringer off to avoid their calls just to get a little time alone.

“Keel, are you here? Keel.” Roger called out rushing into the apartment.

“Yeah, what are you yelling about? And why are you home so early?” she asked, coming out of the baby’s room.

“I’ve been calling for hours. Why aren’t you answering the phone?” he asked going over to the phone, picking it up to listen for the dial tone.

“I turned the ringer off.” she walked into the kitchen for some water.

“Keel, why would you do that? I’ve been worried sick about you. I tried calling you and when you didn’t answer... I thought something happened to you.” he looked down at her.

“I’m sorry, but I couldn’t take it. The moms are driving me crazy and it was all I could do to get some sleep. Angel won’t let me sleep at night and with them calling me all day, I can’t take a nap either. I had to turn the ringer off.” she ranted looking over at him.

“I’m sorry, Baby. I’ll talk to them. Did you get any rest?” he asked leading her over to the couch.

“No. She’s kicking the crap out of me and I really just want her to be born already. I can’t take it, Roger. I’m so tired and I want my body back.” she told him as she cried into her hands. Her hormones were all over the place

“I know, Keel. Soon. Then after that, you can hold Angel all you want. You just have to wait a little longer.” he wrapped his arms around her to comfort her.

“Roger, why is this taking forever? No one told me that pregnancy takes forever. Why does pregnancy take forever?” she cried into his shoulder.

“I’m so sorry, Keel.” he whispered leaning back on the couch and bringing her with him. He kissed her head and soothed her long blond hair. He hated that she was so upset, but knew it was the hormones as well as all of the extra weight that was making her uncomfortable. He wished there was something he could do, but in one more week, they would be parents and then all of this would be behind them and forgotten.

“I’m being crazy, aren’t I?” she asked looking up at him.

“No, Baby. I understand. You can’t wait for Angel to be born just like I can’t wait. It’s perfectly natural.” he kissed her head again as he caressed her shoulder.

“I knew they were gonna drive me crazy. I told you, didn’t I? They’re hovering and I’m already crazy enough with all of these hormones running through me. I can’t take them calling at all hours. Make them stop.” she pleaded looking up at him.

“I will Baby, but you can’t turn the ringer off. I need to be able to get in touch with you so I know you’re OK. Promise me you won’t turn the ringer off when I’m not home.” he looked down at her.

“I… I promise. Just make them stop. Please.”

“Deal.” he smiled kissing her head.

“I’m… I’m sorry I made you leave the studio. The guys must hate me right about now.” she wiped her eyes.

“Of course they don’t hate you. Every one of them loves you like a sister. Who do you think insisted I leave to check on you?” he looked down at her.

“Oli?” she guessed.

“Nate. He’s getting as bad as me and Oliver.” he shook his head before laughing.

“Well, I am his ticket out of your band of testosterone filled man- children.” she laughed patting his chest.

“I guess so.” he smiled at her. He leaned over to kiss her head when the phone rang.

“If that’s them, I’m gonna change the number and not tell them what it is.” she groaned looking over at him.

“I’ll handle it, Baby. Just stay here and relax.” he smiled getting up from the couch. He rushed over to answer the phone. “Hello.”

“Roger? What are you doing home? Is Keely OK? She hasn’t been answering the phone. Your mother and I were getting worried. We were just about to go over there.” Mrs. O’Reilly asked.

“Yeah, she just didn’t sleep very well last night and she turned the ringer off so she could take a nap.” he explained as Keely sat with her head on the back of the couch. She had fallen asleep.

“We’re just worried about her. We don’t want her to be alone, just in case something happens. We don’t mean to hover.” she explained.

“I understand, I really do and I’m glad you guys are looking out for her, but… it’s difficult to be as pregnant as she is and the baby isn’t letting her get comfortable enough to sleep at night. She needs to get her rest whenever she can. The baby is gonna be here soon enough and she needs all the rest she can get.” he told her watching Keely sleep.

“We’re sorry, Roger. We didn’t mean to overwhelm her. We just want to make sure she’s OK.”

“Listen, you know that Keely is my top priority, but we all really need to stop hovering over her and trust her to be able to take care of herself and our daughter. She’s a big girl. If she needs help, you of all people know that she won’t hesitate to tell us.” he understood his mother in laws protective nature and appreciated it, but he needed to respect his wife’s wishes.

“I hear you, Roger. You know, you’re a really good man. I’m glad she has you to stand up for her.” she smiled, admiring her son in laws respect for her daughter and her needs.

“Thanks Lynn. I appreciate you not yelling at me for it.” he laughed quietly.

“I can’t yell at you. I’m sure you get enough of that from Keely. I remember how crazy those pregnancy hormones can make you.” she laughed.

“I’m willing to endure anything to be with her. Those aren’t just words. She’s my purpose.” he smiled at his wife, who had changed position to lie down on the couch.

“Just tell her I called, OK?” she smiled.

“I will, Lynn. Thanks.” he told her before hanging up the phone. He walked over to Keely to put a blanket on her and went into their bedroom. He reached over to the phone to call the studio to tell the guys that Keely was OK and that he would see them tomorrow. They were glad to hear that it was a false alarm, but they still worried about her. When he hung up the phone, he grabbed Keely’s pillow and sprawled across the bed. He put his face in the pillow and inhaled her scent before falling asleep.

“Roger. Roger, wake up.” Keely called out, jarring Roger out of his sleep. He jumped up from the bed before bolting into the living room.

“Keel, what… what happened? What’s the matter?” he asked seeing his wife balled up on the couch, clutching her pregnant belly.

“I think I’m in labor. It… it hurts and... my… my water can’t break. It’ll endanger the baby. I need to go to the hospital right now.” she tried to stay calm, but was failing.

“I’ll take care of you, Keel. Hang on. Just… hang on.” he told her, scared but attempting to put his wife at ease. He rushed to the phone to call an ambulance before calling his mother in law.

“Roger, hurry. Please.” she whimpered as she clutched the pillow.

“I’m… I’m hurrying.” he told the 911 operator that his wife was in early labor and they needed an ambulance right away. His mother in law told him that they would all meet up at the hospital. She would take care of calling Oliver and the others. He shouldn’t have to worry about anything else but being with Keely. She then reassured him that everything was gonna be OK. He wished that that were true, but thanked her for the thought. He got off the phone and returned to Keely. “How are you doing, Baby?” he asked kneeling down next to the couch.

“I’m scared, Roger. What if.. what if my water breaks and puts the baby in jeopardy? I… I don’t want everything we did in this pregnancy to be for nothing and she’s born positive anyway.” she cried looking up at him.

“She is not gonna be positive, Keel. You have to believe that. If you can’t right now, just know that I do and until you can, believe in me. I believe it enough for the two of us. Do you hear me, Keely Lynn?” he looked into her red, tear flooded eyes.

“I… I believe in you, Roger. I will always believe in you.” she looked into his green eyes. She could see his fear, but she could also see confidence. He leaned in to kiss her head when the bell rang.

“That’s the ambulance, I’ll be right back.” he looked down at her.

“Roger.” she grabbed his arm and held it tighter.

“I love you, Keel. Everything is gonna be fine.” he looked intently into her eyes before getting up to go to the door.
