Chapter 11

Xavier Whilson’s POV

“Sir, do you like everything so far?” The curly haired guy asked nervously.

“Yes, but wasn’t these two room supposed to be done next month?” I asked frowning.

“Uhm..yes, Sir. But Miss. James works fast. The plan that you made was to finish up everything within a year but that’s too long of a period for this project actually. We surely don’t need that much of time. It would be over soon.” The guy said grinning ear to ear.

“But like you said according to my plan it should take a year and that’s how it should have been.” I told him scowling at him making him frown in confusion.

“But, sir, like I said one year is too much time. Why waste so much money, resources and time by dragging the project for a year? Trust me, sir, the works is done with full dedication and proper care. We are not rushing. We are going on our normal pace. So you don’t have to worry that we are going to mess up by hurrying to finish the work. We will finish the work without any error from our side.” The guy explained in a tone that parents use to calm their child and it only earned him a sharp glare from me.

“Get back to work.” I snapped at him and he stood there for a minute in a confused manner before scurrying off.

I let out a long sigh and thought about how to proceed further. If this projects ends soon, there won’t as many chances of getting to meet Eva. She was one of the main reasons I started on this building now which was otherwise meant to be modified only after a year or two. Maybe I could ask her to rework on some of the rooms. No. I can’t have her rework rooms after rooms for months. Maybe I should get another building.

“To the house, Sir?” Peter asked once I got into the car and my eyes widened as a new idea struck me.

“That’s a fantastic idea, Peter. You are a genius.” I exclaimed and he looked utterly baffled.

“ want to go home..?” Peter asked sounding confused and I looked down at my watch and since it was almost time to pick up Ace so I asked him to dive him to Ace’s school.

“Okay…” I heard him murmur to himself.

“Hey.” I said as soon as Ace got in the car.

“Hi.” He said and turned to look outside the window.

“ was school?”

“It was okay.” He said with a shrug. I let out sigh and turned towards my window. It was mostly like this between us.

“I was thinking of asking Eva to renovate our house. What do you think about that?” I asked and mentioning Eva’s name instantly got his attention.

“Would you like that?” I asked and he immediately nodded in agreement.

“Yes, I would like that. Our house won’t be so dull and non homey anymore.” He said now looking pleased.

“I didn’t know you thought of it like that. You could have told me you didn’t like it and I would have changed them sooner.” I asked feeling a bit upset. Ace has never spoken to me about what he felt about things. He had just went on with whatever I chose and I always thought he was fine with that. We never had those Dad- Son conversation and we behaved a bit formal with each for which I blame myself. I always had the serious aura on me and he caught on it. Children always look up on their parents and learn life that way and my son did just that but now I wish he hadn’t. I wanted him to be a kid and not a man bottled up in a kids body.

“I liked it before but then when I saw Mamma’s house I liked it better. It looked homey and cozy where as our home looked boring compared to it.” He said with a shrug.

“Well now she is going to make our home just the way you want.” I said and he nodded in reply.

“Ace, you know you can tell me anything right? You can share anything with me without feeling awkward. I will always be there to listen and be there for you. You know that right?”

“I know.” He mumbled while looking out of the window and I let out a sigh again.

Next day evening Eva came to my office in the evening to discuss about the project.

“Your house is insanely beautiful. Everything is flawless. Why in the world would you want to change that? Don’t tell my boss I asked that.” She said and I struggled to come up with an excuse.

“It doesn’t suit us anymore. It looks too extravagant. More like a hotel than home. I need it to look more cozy and welcoming or ‘homey’ as Ace said.” I said and she nodded in agreement.

“So we’ll start the work as soon as the building project is done. I’ll have few sample designs made by then. We’ll discuss how you want each room to look, the theme and other details for that.” She said getting ready to take notes.

“We’ll discuss that once Ace comes. Why don’t you relax till then? Put all these aside for a while. You look really tired.” I said and pushed aside her notes and laptop.

“It has been a really busy week.”

I dragged her to the couch and made her sit down there more comfortably. I then ordered refreshment for her but she was fast asleep on the couch by the time they arrived.

“Daddy, Mamma is asleep.” Ace informed me as soon as came in. No hello or anything for his Daddy. He came in and went straight towards Eva.

“I know. Don’t wake her up. Let her sleep.”

“But then how will we go? Should we wait for her to wake up?” I had kind of promised him that we would have dinner out together but I didn’t want wake her from her much required sleep but it also doesn’t make sense waiting here at the office till she wakes up.

“Why fear when your Daddy is here?” I asked jokingly and walked upto them. Carefully I picked her up in my arms and made sure she was comfortable.

“Let’s go.” I said and made him walk ahead. I send glares at whoever glanced at her weirdly for more than a second and was surprised to see Ace do the same. I had her carefully lay on the backseat with her head on my lap and her legs on Ace’s lap and she was exhausted to the point that she didn’t even stir the entire time.

When we reached home I carried her to my room and laid her on my bed. Ace hopped onto the bed and placed a kiss on her forehead making me smile.

“Sleep well, Mamma. I love you.” He murmured and with a final kiss on her forehead he left the room. I looked at him leave with a sigh. He has been calling her Mamma more than Eva at this point and surprisingly it is not creeping me out enough to make me be firm with him and change that habit. I just let him be and in a way I don’t mind it.

“You make him happy, Angel.” I said to Eva’s sleeping form and left the room after placing a kiss on her forehead like Ace did.

It took about two hours for her to wake up. She presented herself infront of us holding a pillow.

“You guys? I freaking thought I was kidnapped.” She yelled out and threw the pillow on my face.

“I knew this place looked familiar.” She said looking around properly now without fear clouding her mind.

“Nice throw, Mamma.” Ace said grinning ear to ear.

“Thanks, bud.”

Feeling the love guys..feeling the love.

“So..why am I here?”

“You were sleeping so we brought you here.” Ace said while giving her a hug.

“Could have taken to my home or else could have woken me up as normal people would do and not take me here.” She muttered.

“Normal is boring.” I said with a smirk and she discretely showed me the middle finger and I smiled in amusement at this. Ace looked at me confused and I shook my head at him.

“I will leave now.”

“I had already sent your car to your house by my driver. So..”

“You didn’t have to do that but thank you. And I will catch a cab from here.” She replied with a smirk of her own.

“You won’t get cabs in here.” I tried.

“Why? Are we in the middle of desert or in the middle of an ocean?” She asked sarcastically.

“It’s raining!” Ace said suddenly looking outside and true to his words it was really raining and that too heavily.

Perfect timing.

“Oh no!” She groaned out and dramatically flopped onto the couch.

“You are gonna stay here with us then. Yay.” Ace said happily.

“I will get you something to wear.” I said and began to walk towards my room.

“Wait. I will just ask my friend to pick me up. He will come for sure.” She said and began to look around for her phone. I saw Ace discretely hide her phone which was next to him by pushing it to the small gap between the couch and armrest. Instead of scolding him I gave him a thumbs up when he looked at me and he bit his lips to hide the smile that I knew was trying to break out.

“Where is it? Did you guys see it anywhere?” Eva asked still looking around.

“No. Probably forgot it in the office.” I said nonchalantly.

“Ohh. Can I please borrow your phone then? Snap, I don’t even know the number by heart.”

“Why can’t you just stay here? We don’t bite, you know? And it will make Ace happy.” I said and gave Ace a look to make him convince her. I knew the Ace card will always work.

“Yes, Mamma. Stay. Please?”

“I really don’t have any other choice. I will stay.” She said and ruffled his hair. I then went to my room and returned with one of my T-shirt and shorts.

“Here. Go wear them.” I said and handed it out to her and she hesitantly took it. While she went to change I went to the kitchen to ‘try’ to cook something. I wish I could order in now but the weather wasn’t in favour for us.

“God! What are you doing? It’s burnt.” Eva said running into the kitchen while I was trying to clear the smoke clouding in. She immediately came to my side and took the matters into her hands and all the while I remained watching her.

“I’m sorry?”

“Do you even know cooking?”

“Not really…”

“Get out.”

“I will cook. Now get out. Don’t even come a meter close to the kitchen till I’m done cooking because I really wish to walk out alive.”

“Can I stay and watch, Mamma?” Ace asked coming to the kitchen.

“Sure.” She said smiling.

“Hey, that’s not fair.”

“Out.” She said glaring at me.

“Yes, Mam.” I said with a salute and couldn’t stop smiling at her antics.

Soon the dinner was ready and though it takes a lot for me to like something I was pretty impressed by what she had prepared. And I’m sure Ace loved it too seeing that he ate more than he usually does.

“It’s delicious.” I said and Ace nodded widely at this.

“Thank you.” She replied and I swear I saw a faint blush on her face. After the dinner she stood up to do the dishes despite my protest and so I decided to help her.

“Why is he watching that?” She asked me seeing Ace watch a business channel.

“It’s a part of his routine.”

“Routine? Woah. I’m a grown up lady and yet I have no specific routine but he has? Impressive. But business channel? Don’t you think he is a bit young to watch this?”

“He has seen me watch them and has caught upon my habits and has made it a part of his routine.”

“Does he even understand that?”

“I don’t really know.”

“He doesn’t watch cartoons or animation movies?”

“Never. I doubt he even knows that such channels exist. He does mostly things that I do. He wake up early everyday, get ready, read newspaper, go to school, come back, showers, reads some business magazines or articles, have dinner, watch TV for specific time and then go to sleep. The cycle continues.”

“It’s like following a time table. You do realise that it’s not the way it should be right? He is kid not an adult. His childhood is being ruined. He has to learn to live a little. To learn to live like a kid.”

I know. And I hope you will teach him how to. I hope you that you will help me guide him and show him the world in your perspective.

“Xavier, that’s not how a child should be living his life. He doesn’t even know that there are other things besides the stupid business channel that he could enjoy. That he can play and laugh aloud and heck even throw tantrums from time to time. You know what? I’m taking things into my own hands. I’ll try and show him the normal things in life. How to have fun and be cheery. I’ll try to make him understand that he doesn’t have to act serious all the time. That he can make mistakes. That he can be naughty at times. That he doesn’t have to act like you and can just be a kid. Is that okay with you?” She asked and looked at Ace who was rubbing his eyes to get rid of the sleep as it’s not yet the time for his sleep.

In a second I had her enveloped in my arms tightly.

Can she get any better?

“Do it. Do whatever you want and help me make him the happiest kid. I had failed in doing so but I know you can succeed in it.” I said holding her tightly in my arms. I then placed a lingering kiss on her forehead. She pulled away blushing and quickly went towards Ace.

“Ace, why don’t you watch Cartoons instead of this boring channel?” I heard her ask him and I moved closer to them.

Ace looked at her confused for a moment and then shrugged probably not even knowing the deal about cartoons.

“I really wanna see some cartoons, Little one. Can we please watch them, pretty please?” My Angel asked giving him the puppy dog eyes and he fell for it.

“Sure.” He said passed her the remote and then for next half an hour they watched some random cartoons and I saw that Ace really enjoyed them by the way he laughed here and there along with my Angel. But he was yawning every other minute.

“I’m really tired. Can we sleep now?” Eva asked and he hesitantly nodded.

“Now don’t be sulky. I know you are tired too. I will even read a bedtime story for you if that’s what it takes to get you to bed.”

“You will?” He asked eagerly.

He have never heard bedtime stories before.

“Why not? Come on.”

Ace led her to his room and they got in the bed and cuddled together while I silently watched them. And soon she began with her story and Ace had his undivided attention on her but halfway the story he fell asleep but Eva just let out a small chuckle at this and kissed on his head and soon she was out too.

Seeing them cuddling together made me realize that this is what I want. I have never seen Ace as happy as this before. And never have I felt as content as I’m feeling now. This moment here was perfect and now all I got to do is make sure that every moment from now on remain like this.
