Chapter 18

Xavier Whilson’s POV

“Daddy, come on. Walk faster.” Ace said tugging my hand. He had barged into my room in the morning and demanded me to follow him.

“Okay, okay. I will but at least tell me what this is about.”

“It was a surprise for me and so it should be one for you too, Daddy. But I promise you it is a good surprise.” He said and it was clear he was very excited as he was nearly running now.

“Is the surprise in your room?” I asked seeing that’s where he is leading me.

“Yes, Daddy. You have no idea how shocked I was.” He said and the wide grin on his face never faltered even for a second and now I was more than curious to know what this was all about.

“You shouldn’t make any noise, okay? You have to be really quiet.” He said and then once I agreed he finally allowed me to enter his room.

“Daddy, hush.” He whisper yelled at me.

“How is she here? When did she come?”

“I don’t know. She was here when I got up. Now please, hush. You will wake her up.” Ace said but it was too late.

“Daddy, you woke her up!”

“Oh my God. What’s the time? Am I late for work?” Eva asked jumping out of the bed.

“No. No. It’s still early.” I assured her and she sat back on the bed.

“So guess who is here?” She said pointing at herself sheepishly. God, she is so adorable.

“My Mamma.” Ace cheered and jumped into her arms and he received many kisses from her in return.

“So how come you are here this early?” I asked sitting beside her. I placed a kiss on her temple while wondering how just the mere presence of one person could fill both Ace’s and my heart with such pure joy.

“Well..I wanted to see you guys and so here I am. And I did promise this little munchkin that I would visit him.” She said pinching Ace’s cheek. While Eva and I met twice or thrice last week for work Ace wasn’t so lucky. He had school and whenever he was free Eva usually was engaged in work and so they had only met once.

“How is the fundraising party coming along?” I asked as organizing that event was what kept her busy the entire week.

“Almost done with all the arrangements. I’m just happy that it would be over this Friday.”

“That’s great.”

“So I have bought breakfast. It must have gotten cold now but that’s okay. We’ll just reheat it. But first both of you go and get ready.” She said and began pushing us out of the bed.

“Okay, Mamma.” Ace said ran towards his closet.

“Be back soon.” I said and hurried to my room.

Fifteen minutes later we were all seated on the table. It was fascinating to see how natural Eva was with Ace. She was treating him like her own son even if she herself didn’t see it. She would be chatting with me about something related to work and in the midst of our conversation she could just casually turn towards Ace and wipe the maple syrup off his face with her thumb or give him the strawberries she had in her own plate because she knew how much he liked them and Ace would just bask in all the attention he was receiving from her. She always listened to what he has got to say however silly the matter maybe. She included him all conversation and would ask for his opinions and would make him feel like he mattered. And maybe that’s how she usually is with people but even then I knew from just watching them together they both had a special bond.

“Xavier, hello? Why are you looking at me like that? Is there something on my face?” She said interrupting me from my thoughts.

“You are just so beautiful, Angel.” I said and she laughed out but couldn’t hide the blush on her face.

“Shut up, Xavier.”

“No, Mamma. Daddy is right. You are very very beautiful.” Ace agreed and Eva shook his head smiling.

“You guys flatter me too much.” She said getting up with her plate in her hand.

“We are just stating the truth, Love.” I said and saw her almost drop the plate when I used that endearing.

“Just leave it in the sink. The maid will come to clean up.” I said enjoying seeing her so flustered. She mumbled something under her breath and hurried off to the kitchen.

“Okay, guys. I have to leave now if I don’t want to be late.” She said coming from the kitchen. She leaned down to kiss Ace’s cheek and bid him goodbye. I walked her out and came back inside to see Ace looking down at his breakfast sadly.

“I miss her already.”

“We will go see her soon. And even if we didn’t she would come to you like she did today because she loves you so much.”

“You think so? You really think she loves me?” He asked sounding a bit insecure.

“Of course, she does. There is no doubt about that and I love you too. You are my greatest treasure.” I said kneeling down to his height.

“And I love you too, Daddy. A lot.” He said wrapping his little arms around my neck. This was something I craved to have. Something I envisioned and now it is actually happening. He is expressing himself and is being close to me and I was beyond happy for that.

The next couple of days dragged by and it was finally Friday. It was nearly impossible to talk to and meet Eva. She was always busy and our phone calls were constantly interrupted by some dimwits asking her to arrange something or informing her about a new meeting and it was beyond frustrating. I wasn’t used to this. Usually when I want something I went over and beyond to have it done. I made sure things went like I wanted it to. I’m used to demanding for things I wanted. And now I’m made to wait for the time and attention of a person like I never had to. It was maddening and I never thought such a day would come but it has and strangely I’m willing to put up with it all. She is worth it.

I was pleasantly surprised when I got a call from her around 10:00 at night. I picked it up on the first ring.

“Hey, Devil.”

“Hello, Angel.” I greeted and a smile automatically formed on my lips.

“What are you upto?”

“Just finishing up with some work. What about you? Are you still at the party?” I asked hearing few voices in the background.

“Yeah..trying to think of ways to ditch. I’m tired already. Boss lady had been bossing me extra hard today.” She said and it was very clear from her voice how tired it was. It was astonishing to see how dedicated and hardworking she was.

“Ditch and come here then. It is much closer than your home from there.”

“Hm..maybe I will. Where is Ace?”

“He is here.”

“Not asleep yet?”

“No.” I lied knowing she is more likely to come here if I tell her he is awake.

“I’ll try and get out of here soon then.”

“I’ll come pick you up.”

“No,no. It’s okay. I have my car and I haven’t had any drinks.”

“Okay, then. Drive safe.”

“Will do. Bye.” She said and ended the call and I went upto to check up on Ace and decided against waking him up.

Twenty minutes later I heard her car pulling up to the driveway and opened the door for her and there she was dressed in a long black dress with her hair in an elegant bun and her makeup done flawlessly. She got out of the car and walked towards me holding a pint of ice cream and gave me that sweet angelic smile of hers and though it may sound cheesy, I felt like the time had frozen for a minute.

“You look beyond beautiful, Angel.” I managed to say.

“I always do.” She said cheekily.

“True.” I agreed wholeheartedly and leaned down to press a kiss on her rosy cheek.

“Are you going to let me in or what?” She asked not meeting my eyes now in shyness.

“Shit, sorry. Come in.” I said and moved out of the way for her. She got rid of her heels and slumped on the couch.

“Where is Ace?”

“He fell asleep.”

“…” She mumbled but didn’t seem too upset about it.

“He will be very happy to see you here in the morning.” I said and she nodded while getting more comfortable on the couch.

“Can you please be a sweetheart and get us spoons?” She asked lifting up the ice cream to show me what it is for.

“Be back in a minute.” I handed her the spoons and sat down beside her legs and began massaging them.

“Hey, you don’t have to do that. Oh..never mind. Please continue. That feels nice.” She said sighing in relief.

“Here.” She said and fed me the ice cream.

“So how did it go?” I asked while continuing to gently press her soles. She began rambling from then on and I for once was happy to be the listener. It was then I realised how nice it is to have someone to talk and listen to. How it felt to have late night conversation about the most random things.

“I think you should go sleep now.” I said reluctantly. It was around 1 and somehow in her tiredness she had moved closer to me and was now snuggled against my chest. Her hair was out of the bun and my hand had found refuge in them. It was a pleasant feeling and I was reluctant to let go but she was tired and needed her sleep.

“But…I didn’t finish telling that story about…what was it about again?” She mumbled sleepily. I pressed a kiss on her hair and carried her upstairs despite her protest.

“You get changed. I will get you a glass of water.” I said once we were in the guest room. She had a set of pajamas here from her previous sleepover that she forgot to take back and so she took it from my hand mumbling a thank you.

I checked on Ace again and put the remaining melted ice cream in the freezer. After switching off the lights I went back upstairs with a water bottle only to find her already sleeping slumped horizontally on the middle of the bed. I put the bottle on the nightstand and repositioned her so that she was laying with her head on the pillow and covered her with blanket.

“Night, Love.”
