Chapter 39

(About two weeks later)

It was a busy day at the office. There were meetings after meetings and a lot of deadlines to meet. Just as I was walking out of one meeting, Anne came to me grinning.

“Eva, this came for you.” Anna said and gave me a bouquet of flowers.

“Must be from Xavier.” She said as I was staring at it in confusion.

“Thank you, Anne.” I said and walked into my cabin before staring at the flowers again. Xavier did often get me flowers and had them sent to my office too but for some reason I had a feeling that this wasn’t from him. These were a bunch of lilies which as far as I remember Xavier had never send before and it also lacked the usual handwritten note that Xavier always sends along with the flowers. Just as I picked up my phone to call Xavier I received a message from Kane and suddenly it stuck me that this was sent by him.

Hope you liked the flowers, honey. This is to celebrate the demise of the man who came between us. Now it’s just us. Like it is supposed to be.

See you soon, sweetheart.

The phone always fell from my hold as I read the text.

Demise? What bullshit is he talking about?

“He is just messing with you, Eva. Calm down.” I told myself. It would be impossible for a trained assassin to get past Xavier’s security so then how in the world would Kane be able to do that and harm Xavier?

“He is just playing games. Trying to mess with your head.” I tried to convince myself but fear had already gripped hold of me and I dialled Xavier’s number.

“Switched off? How come his phone is switched off?” I asked and then tried Laura’s office line.

“Laura, this is Eva. Could you please transfer this call to Xavier?” I asked as soon as she picked up.

“Oh hi, Eva. Mr Whilson is not here. He left sometime ago.”

“Did he say where he was going?”

“ Is everything alright?”

“I just wanted to talk to him urgently. His phone is switched off. Will you please let me know if he comes back to the office?”

“Yeah, sure.”

“Thank you, Laura. I’ll talk to you later.” I said and said a quick bye before ending the call. I told myself to not freak out just yet and dialled Peter’s phone.

“Good afternoon, Eva. What can I do for you?” Peter answered.

“Where is Xavier, Peter?”

“At the office, I believe.”

“He is not at the office, Peter. Are you not with him?”

“No, I’m out running some errands.”

“So who drove him to the office today?”

“He drove himself. Is something wrong, Eva?” He asked as I became more and more nervous. I told Peter about the text I received.

“I’m sure Kane is just bluffing but it would put me at ease if I could hear from Xavier.”

“Do you think that man is capable of causing real harm as his threat suggests?” Peter asked and for a moment I hesitated.

“I honestly don’t know anymore. Few years ago the answer would surely have been no but now…I don’t know.” I said biting my lips.

“Don’t worry, Eva. I’ll try my best to find Mr Whilson.”

“Try contacting his security team who is with him today.” I suggested.

“I will. I’ll call you as soon as I know something.” He said and ended the call. I kept on trying Xavier’s phone repeatedly hoping he would answer only to be disappointed again.

“Eva, what happened? Why are you pacing like this?” Anne asked and I stopped pacing around the cabin to answer her.

“I think something happened to Xavier.” I said in worry.

“What makes you say that?” She asked and I showed her the message.

“I have not been able to contact Xavier. What if Kane actually did something to Xavier?” I asked and then stormed out of the cabin.

“Eva, stop. Where are you going?” I heard Anne ask me.

“To talk to the cops. I can’t just sit here and do nothing.” I said and repeatedly pressed the elevator button.

“Why is this taking so much time?” I asked to myself staring the number displayed on the screen.

“Forget it.” I said to myself in frustration and decided to take the stairs. I kept on trying Xavier’s number as I climbed down the stairs. Just as I was going to try again, Anne called me on phone.

“He is here, Eva. Xavier is here.” Anne gasped out.

“Yeah, he just walked out of the elevator.” She said and I heard Xavier asking her what was wrong.

“Tell him to stay right there. I’m coming.” I said and began climbing the stairs back to my floor. As soon as I saw his face, I began yelling at him without even giving him a chance to speak.

“What in the world did you do to your phone? Do you have any idea how worried I was?” I screamed at him.

“Angel, I-’

“Don’t you angel me right now, Xavier. Just don’t.” I snapped but before I could yell more, my phone rang and I picked it up seeing it was Peter.

“Yes, Peter. I found him.” I said as soon as I picked up the call.

“Yeah, about that. I have been trying to call you for the past five to ten minutes to tell you he was at the parking lot of your office. You were on another call.”

“I was calling this dufus. Anyways, thank you for your help, Peter.” I said and ended the call. I finally let out a long sigh and Xavier pulled me into a tight hug.

“I’m sorry for worrying you, Love. Miss Anne just told me what happened.” He said and kissed my head. “I’m fine, okay? Everything is alright.” He assured.

“I knew he was bluffing but when you didn’t answer the call..i worried that something-’ I said pulling away to look at his face.

“But it didn’t. I’m okay.” He said cupping my face and then hugged me again.

“What are you all staring at? Get back to work.” Xavier yelled at the other employees who were staring at us in curiosity.

“Hey, I’m the boss here.” I said smiling through my tears of relief.

“And a beautiful boss at that.” He said wiping away the tears with his thumbs.

“Why don’t we go home?” He suggested.

“No, I can’t. There is a lot of work to finish.” I said pulling away from his hands.

“Which I can manage.” Anne intervened.

“Then that’s settled.” Xavier said and began tugging me to the elevator.

“No, buts.”

“Hey, you forgot to take these back from me.” Anne said running after us and gave Xavier the package of food.

“Thank you, Miss. Anne.”

“Thank you, Anne.” I said and she nodded at me.

“Take care.” She said with a wave just as the elevator closed.

“So what happened to your phone? Did you run out of battery?” I asked once we were in the car.

“Some idiot ran into me this morning and it broke. I’ll have a new one delivered to me in an hour.” He said and I leaned my head on his shoulder thinking how dramatic I was being about the whole thing. But that didn’t stop me from calling Ace’s school to make sure Kane hasn’t got to him.

“What’s wrong?” Xavier asked as I lifted my head off his shoulder suddenly and began frantically looking through my phone for the number.

“I’m calling Ace’s school to make sure he is okay.” I said and dialled the number. As soon as the lady picked up I began with an apology and the requested to talk to Ace. In a minute he was at the phone and I let out a sigh of relief.

“Mamma? Is everything alright?” He asked in worry.

“Everything is fine, baby. I just wanted to check in on you. No one is giving you any trouble, are they?” I asked thinking about the fight he had last week. We had a meeting with his teacher and the boy’s parents regarding it and the matter was discussed and solved but I still worried if something like that would happened again.

“No, Mamma. Everything is good here. By the way, Mamma, can we get donuts today? The nutella filled one’s?” He asked adorably making me smile.

“Of course, baby. Now I’m going to end the call, okay? I’m sorry for interrupting you in between school.”

“No problem, Mamma. I love you.”

“I love you too.” I said and ended the call and let out a sigh of relief.

“He is safe and wants donuts.” I said and again rested my head on his shoulder. Xavier chuckled and pressed a kiss on my head.

We stopped by the Police station on our way home to complain about Kane. I hesitated for a minute before entering not sure if I should do this or not but then again it was clear that I can no longer trust him to not bring harm to the people involved in my life and so I decided to keep my feeling of guilt aside.

Xavier had a cop friend who helped us file the complaint. I showed him the messages sent by Kane and he promised to give us a call as soon as they took action.

“Now let’s go home.”
