Chapter 42

Groaning I woke up from the sleep holding my head foolishly hoping that it would reduce my headache.

“It will be alright soon. Here take this.” Xavier whispered beside me and handed me medicine.
I took them without complaint and gulped it down with water.

“Xavier..what had happened?” I asked scared of his reply. He narrated last night’s incident and I was filled with dread of what happened and what could have happened if not for Xavier and his guards.

“You are safe now, Angel.” He said cupping my cheek and I leaned forward to rest my head on his shoulder feeling angry, upset and disturbed. Xavier ran his hand up and down my back comfortingly.

“He is now in prison and will be there for a very long time. He can’t hurt you anymore.” He assured.

“Thank you.” I murmured while cuddling to his chest.

“You are mine to protect. You shouldn’t thank me for that.” He said with seriousness and I pecked his cheek to which he smiled.

“Where’s Ace?”

“He went to school. He doesn’t know about yesterday. I told him you were tired with all the office work and so was sleeping in.”

“He has never left for school without saying bye to me since I moved in here.” I noted upset with myself.

“He did say bye before leaving. You just weren’t awake to hear it.” Xavier said and I couldn’t help but smile picturing him saying bye to my sleeping self.

“He is such a sweetheart.”

“Like his mother.”

“Too early for flattery, Devil.” I said rubbing the sleep out of my eyes. Xavier’s father knocked on the door just then and came in carrying breakfast.

“Mr Xavier, you didn’t have to do this. I would have come downstairs myself.” I said and was about to get up from the bed but he stopped me before I could.

“No. No. Sit back down. Just relax.” He said and handed the tray to Xavier who placed in it on the bed in front of me.

“Thank you so much, Mr Whilson.”

“You are welcome, Dear. And please stop with Mr Whilson. You call me Arthur or dad.” He said and I nodded with a smile.

“This taste absolutely delicious, Dad.” I said after having my first bite and I could see he was glad that I chose to call him dad instead of his name.

“Oh this is nothing. I have a special dish that I’m planning to cook this weekend. I think you will like it.”

“I’m sure I will.” I affirmed.

“Old man’s ego goes up and up.” Xavier commented seeing his Dad smiling at my compliment.

“I smell jealousy in the air. Can you smell it too Eva?” Dad teased.

“I think I smell it too.” I said looking at Xavier.

“Mean people.” He muttered to himself.

“Son, today I’m doing you a favour so don’t call me mean.”

“What favour?” Xavier muttered.

“The favour of looking after your son while you and your girlfriend here goes on a date.”

“You would really do that?”

“Depends on your behaviour.”

“Dad, I’m not a kid anymore so stop saying that to me.”

“You still act like a kid though.”

“Grow up, Dad.”

“Back at ya, kid.”

“I don’t think we need television to entertain us anymore.” I commented and they both turned to glare at me.

“I have a date to prepare for so bye.” Xavier said and left the room after pecking me on lips.

“I love annoying him, you know? Dad said chuckling.

“He seem to love to annoy you too.”

“I thank God everyday for giving me Xavier. Life would have been so boring without him.”

“He loves you, you know that right?”

“I do. He doesn’t know how to express it or to say it out loud but I can see it in his eyes and that’s all I need.”

“You are an amazing father.”

“I’m glad you think so. And I’m very happy that he has got you now to take care of him.”

“Will you ever think of dating again?” I asked out of curiosity as Xavier had mentioned to me that his dad had given up on dating when bringing Xavier up.

“I don’t know.. maybe if I find the right woman. But I’m too old for all that and to be honest I’m fine alone.”

“I’m sure God will have someone in his mind for you.” I said and he just shook his head in amusement.

“Mamma!” Ace called out and ran to me after reaching home from school that day.

“My Baby.” I said and hugged him to me tightly.

“Ace missed you, Mamma.”

“Mamma missed Ace too. A lot. I’m sorry I couldn’t see you in the morning.”

“It’s fine, Mamma. You okay now though?” He asked concerned.

“Yes, Baby. Mamma is completely fine. So don’t worry about me okay? Now why don’t you have the pasta I have made for you?” I asked and he nodded.

“Daddy seems very excited. What’s going on, Mamma?” Ace asked seeing a very hyper Xavier.

“Your Daddy is taking your Mamma on a date so of course he is excited.” Dad said chuckling.

“So what about me? I’ll miss you both.” Ace said pouting.

“We’ll miss you too, Little One. But you have your granddad to give you company. You’ll also have fun time.” I said running my hand through his hair.

“Yes, Buddy. I’ll even let you stay up past your bedtime and will let to you have ice cream for dinner.” Dad suggested and I mouthed ‘You will not’ at him.

“Fine.” Ace said with a small smile.

“We’ll have a family outing tomorrow. Is that okay, Son?” Xavier suggested.

“I would love that, Daddy. And tomorrow I won’t let you steal Mamma from me.” Ace said sticking his tongue out at him.

“You all will come to see my game, won’t you?” Ace then asked worried.

“Of course we will, Baby. We wouldn’t miss it for the world.” I said both excited and nervous for his friendly football match this Friday.

“We’ll be there for sure, Son.”

“Group hug!” Dad said randomly and engulfed us in a hug.

“Dad, you smell.” Xavier complained pulling away from the hug.

“Not as bad as you, Son.” He said pulling away while Ace and I remained hugging refusing to be apart. I smothered his face with kisses making him giggle.

“Mamma..” He said in between his giggles.

“You are so cute.” I cooed pulling his cheeks.

“Thank you, Mamma. You are very beautiful. My beautiful Mamma.” He said kissing my cheeks.

“Son, I feel like we are third wheeling and should immediately move out of the room.” Dad said to Xavier.

“Glad you feel the same, Dad.” Xavier muttered still looking at us.

“Mamma loves me, you know.” Ace said to Xavier ‘as a matter of fact’.

“From the amount of time you have boasted it to me, I haven’t forgotten.” Xavier said faking annoyance.

“I smell jealously in the air, do you Mamma?” Ace asked sniffing the air making me and Dad laugh out aloud.

“Why am I always the being bullied? Give me a break will ya?” Xavier grumbled out.

“Come here.” I said and stepping away from Ace and raised my arms out feeling bad for him. He rushed to my arms and hugged me tightly mumbling things to himself.

“Group hug!!” I heard Dad say again and soon the other two joined us.
