Chapter 7

“He is my father”

“Father?” I asked and all of them even Mike nodded in reply.

“Father?” I asked again dumbly.

“Yes, dumbo. Xavier Whilson is Ace Whilson’s father. I’m surprised you didn’t know that till now.” Mike said and shook his head at me as if he is disappointed in me.

“Don’t call her that.” Ace shouted at Mike and I grinned devilishly and wiggled my eyebrows at Mike and he merely rolled his eyes.

“You are Ace Whilson, son of Xavier Whilson. This man here.” I asked Ace again to confirm and he nodded in reply.

“He is my son, Angel. My blood.” Xavier confirmed and I looked between him and Peter several times. I suddenly remembered that Ace told me he has no mother.

Why are most of the good looking guys either gay or married or taken or characterless?

“No. No. No. It’s not what you are thinking, Miss James. Absolutely not. Mr. Whilson and I am not in a relationship. We are not a couple. Not at all.” Peter said quickly.

“Don’t tell me you really thought that.” Xavier said scowling and I shrugged in reply.

“I thought Peter was Ace’s father and he never corrected me.” I justified and Xavier narrowed his eyes at Peter.

“In the beginning I never got a chance to. And then I thought it would ease your mind knowing she didn’t save your son knowing your fame like you thought she did.” Peter said defensively.

“You thought what?” I asked glaring at Xavier.

“Misunderstanding, Angel. Sorry.” Xavier said and cupped my right hand in both of his to try to soothe my anger.

“I had enough drama for now so Peter can you please get me the juice you promised me? This woman dragged me away from my work place and didn’t feed me a thing.” Mike, my half Latino sassy and true to heart best friend complained.

“You clearly shouldn’t have.” Xavier groaned out to me.

“I wasn’t going to go a random man’s house alone and defenceless just because a guy I met few days ago told me to meet his boss for God knows what. No offence, Peter.”

“None taken. I’ll bring in the drinks now.” Peter said and excused himself.

“Hey, don’t talk shit about me like I’m not here. I still haven’t forgiven you for hurting my best friend.” Mike said to Xavier who was constantly glaring at Mike.

“Don’t curse in front of a child, Mike.” I reprimanded and he muttered out an apology.

“Daddy won’t hurt you anymore. I promise I won’t let him. Please don’t stop talking to me because of it.” Ace said to me sounding sad.

“Hey, don’t be sad. I’m not upset at you or your father. And I won’t stop talking to you over this. I promise.” I assured him and he let out a relieved smile.

“Thank you.” He said while I noticed the soft look Xavier had on his face when looking at his son.

“Excuse me, dude. Can you back off a bit? You are too close to my best friend and I’m not liking it.” Mike said to Xavier.

“Mike is it?” Xavier asked while casually scrolling through his phone.

“Uh..Yes. You know what? You are not that close to my friend. She is cool so I’m cool. Do what you want. I’ll go drink my juice from the kitchen.” Mike said and hurried outside.

“What happened just now?” I asked confused.

“He must be really thirsty.” Xavier said as Peter came in with my water.

“Thank you, Peter.”

“You are welcome, Miss James.”

“I told you before, Peter. Calling me Eva is fine.”

“Uh..Okay.” He said and then left the room saying about some work that he has to finish.

“So why did you want to see me anyways?”

“Ace, why don’t you go have some snacks from the kitchen while I talk with Eva for sometime?” Xavier suggested.

“I’m not hungry and I want to stay with Eva.” Ace said while not making eye contact with his father.

“She is not leaving anytime soon, Ace. She will be here after you finish eating.” Xavier said and Ace looked at me in doubt and I nodded in assurance.

“Okay.” He mumbled before walking out.

“Thank you for saving him that day. He is my everything and I can’t lose him.”

“I did what I had to do.” I said with a shrug.

“You put your life in danger for him and I would forever be grateful for you.” He said and I felt my cheek warm up slightly.

“So you got this cut that day, didn’t you?” He asked brushing his thumb against my temple where I had a cut from hitting my head after saving Ace.

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay, Xavier. Now you are being way too sweet which is kind of scaring me.” I said and he let out a chuckle.

“There is something else that I wish to discuss with you.”

“What is it?” I asked frowning.

“You gave Ace your phone number, didn’t you?”

“Uh..yes. Back then I thought Peter was his father and he seemed okay with it. So I gave it as he told me it was to call me to plan this meeting. I’m sorry if that was a problem.”

“And is that why he called you last Sunday morning?”

“Not really. He said he just wanted to talk to me. I asked him if his parents knew about him calling me and he said yes. I asked him if I could talk to his parents but he said his father wasn’t home and that..that he doesn’t have a mother. He sounded sad then so I changed the subject.”

“He didn’t take my permission for calling you. I only came to know about it when I checked the phone. Did you know that he had your number saved as ‘Mamma’?”

“What?!” I screeched in shock.

“Calm down, woman.” He said while patting my shoulder.

“Why the heck would he do that?”

“I don’t know. He acts so differently with you. He don’t usually give a shit about others but with you he is so cozy and cuddly. Heck, my son doesn’t even cuddle with me like he did with you few minutes ago.”

“I’m sorry. I don’t know what I did to make him think of me like that. You should definitely talk to him about this and clear it up.”

“Maybe..maybe he likes the way you treat him. You even saved him from danger. So he feels affectionate towards you unlike with any others. He has never felt a mother’s love or care. Not even from his own mother so when he received that care from you he decided to see you as his mother.” Xavier reasoned looking at me weirdly.

“I’m sorry?” Was all I could say.

Why the hell was I put in such a situation?

“Don’t apologise. You didn’t meant for this to happen.” He said while looking lost in thought.

“So what are we going to do about this?”

“I’ll talk to him and make him understand. But please don’t change the way you treat him. It might hurt him badly.”

“I won’t. But I also don’t want to lead him on. That would hurt him more in the end. It’s a good thing that I won’t be meeting him often.” I said even though the fact saddened me. The little boy has sneaked his way into my heart already and strangely I felt the need to see and spend time with him.

“You are his Dad’s close friend so you would be meeting him often, Angel.” He said with a smirk.

“I don’t think so.” I said while carefully touching my chin.

“Does it hurt?” He asked frowning.

“Just a little bit.”

“Let me get you some ointment for that.” He said and left the room only to come back a minute later with the ointment.

“Thank you.” I said while placing my palm open for him to give it to me.

“I’ll do it for you.”

“I’m completely capable of doing it on my own.” I said but the stubborn man just ignored me. He sat beside me and turned me to face him before gently starting to apply the ointment on my chin.

“If you don’t mind me asking, what happened to Ace’s mother?”

“She passed away.” He said showing no emotion on his face.

“I’m sorry for bringing that up.”

“It’s okay. She left him months before she left the world though. Ace is a result of our one night stand. When I came to know that she was carrying my child I was ready to take my responsibilities. She was ready to have him too. But to her Ace was a merely a way to get into my life. To get my money and fame and I was okay with that as long as I had my child with me. But after the birth things got difficult. Taking care of a baby was not really her cup of tea and not even my money could stop her from leaving. A year later she had an unfortunate accident and we couldn’t save her.” He said and let out a long sigh. I leaned close to him and loosely wrapped my arms around him being careful as to not let my ointment on his shirt. He slowly bought his arm around me and held me close.

“This feels good. You smell really nice.” He said and I broke the hug immediately.

“Don’t be a creep now.” I warned him and he rolled his eyes at me.

“Let’s go check on Mike and Ace. Mike must have raided your entire kitchen by now.” I said and both of us walked to the kitchen together. Mike had a plate with many sandwiches infront of him while Ace had only one sandwich on his plate. Ace was slowly biting onto his sandwich watching Mike scarf down his one after other.

“You look like you are having the time of your life, Mike.” I said and he swallowed down loudly before speaking.

“I am. This is freaking delicious, Eva. Want one?”

“No thank you. We do have to go back home soon. You know that right?” I reminded.

“Yeah. Let me just finish these and then we’ll be on our way.” He said and went back to eating.

“You are leaving already?” Ace asked sounding upset.

“We have to get home before it’s late.”

“Oh.” He mumbled out turning his head away from me and I looked over at Xavier not knowing what to do.

“Don’t worry. Eva would come home for dinner this Saturday.” Xavier said and my eyes widened at his lie.

What is this man doing? He is giving the poor child false hope.

“What the heck?” I mouthed at him and he only smirked at me.

“Really?” Ace asked hopefully and it saddened me to upset him with my answer.

“Uhm..” I mumbled thinking over what to say. Right on the moment my phone rang and I looked at the caller and then looked up at my cheeky best friend who had his phone kept on his knee facing down away from others view.

“Excuse me. I have to take this call. It’s urgent.” I said and walked away to one of the corner of kitchen while talking random things through my phone.

“Oh right now? Okay. I will be right there. Okay. Bye.” I said and ended the call.

“I’m sorry we have to get going now.” I said trying sound apologetic and I felt Xavier look at me suspiciously.

“Thank you for having us here, Mr. Whilson. Your chef makes some mean sandwich. Please do convey my gratitude to him.” Mike said and the arrogant man did not bother replying to him.

“Bye.” I said out aloud meekly and began speed walking out of the kitchen.

“Eva..” Ace called out desperately and my feet refused to take a step ahead. I turned back to face him and I clenched my fist tightly seeing him look so disappointed and sad. He then ran towards me and hugged my legs.

“Are you mad at me?” He asked holding onto my legs tightly and I glanced at his father who stared at his son in forlorn.

“Of course not, Little one.” I said tugging his arms off with difficulty and sat on my knees infront of him.

“I’m not mad at you. And I don’t think I can ever be. I’m sorry for leaving so abruptly.” I said already regretting my actions.

“Can you please come home on Saturday? Please? I really want you to.” He said and I found myself nodding.

“How can I say no to your adorable face? I will be here.”

“Really? You promise?”

“Pinky promise.” I said curling my pinkie finger and waited for him to curl his around mine. He looked at my finger in confusion.

“Here.” I said and brought his hand close to mine and taught him how to do it.

“Now I can’t break the promise.” I said and he surprised me by leaning down to place a kiss on our pinkies.

He is so precious.

“You are an amazing boy, Ace.” I said pulling him into a hug.

“Thank you.” He mumbled and tightened his arms around my neck.

“I have to go now. See you on Saturday, alright?” I said and he nodded before slowly pulling away.

As soon I stood up I was pulled into another pair of arms.

“See you soon, Angel.” Xavier whispered in my ears.

“I’m gonna kill you.” I muttered back angrily.

“I’m curious to know how.” He said sounding amused. Mike cleared throat loudly and I pulled away from the hug. Seeing Xavier lean down to me I backed away and hurried out after yelling out a bye.
