I glared at the two pink lines willing for them to disappear, this could not be happening.
“What does it say?” My best friend Leah asked impatiently, as she paced across our bathroom floor.
I looked up and met her concerned blue eyes. “It’s positive.”
Leah sucked in a breath and closed her eyes tightly before reopening them. “Okay, okay. It could be a false alarm that always happens.” She grabbed another pregnancy box and thrust it into my hands. “Here pee on another stick.
“I don’t think this time is going to be any different from the four other I’ve tried.” I told her nodding in the direction of then used pregnancy test on the counter.
Leah slumped onto the ground and ran her hands through her light brown hair. “Oh man, what I’m I going to do? My life is over.”
“Your life?” I asked raising an eyebrow.
“Yes! No more partying, no more booze, no more fun.”
I sighed as I pulled her arms making her stand up. “As my best friend don’t you think you should be telling me everything is going to be okay?”
“No, best friends shouldn’t lie to each other.” She replied sticking out her tongue making me laugh at her immaturity.
My laughter quickly dies as I remember I’m pregnant. “What am I going to do?” I whisper as the reality of being pregnant finally hits home.
“You’re going to be fine.” Leah muttered. “I’m going to be here with you every step of the way. As much as a prick Josh is, I don’t think he’ll abandon his baby.”
“Oh man.” I started to wail. “Josh isn’t even the father.”
“What do you mean? You’ve been dating him for ages. Did you cheat on him?” She asked looking shocked.
“No. Remember we went out that night a couple of months ago after Josh and I broke up?”
“Yeah, you almost drank the whole bar dry that night.” Leah laughed and motioned for me to carry on.
“I was upset and I just wanted to get my mind off Josh. I kinda slept with someone.” I told her, my voice going quieter and quieter as I said each word.
“You had a one night stand?” Leah gasped, her eyes so wide I was worried her eyes might pop out. “You’re Miss Prude, you lost your virginity at 20 and made Josh wait over a year before you did him and you had a one night stand?”
I groaned loudly. “I just wanted to have fun that night and I made a mistake.”
“Woo! I’m proud of you!” Leah cheered, swinging her arms up in the air like a crazy person.
“You’re proud because I got knocked up by a one night stand?” I glared at her making her quickly stop swinging her arms in the air.
“Well not that, but awh my baby is finally growing up.” She cooed giving me a huge smile.
“Really? You just had to say baby?”
“Oops accident.” She shrugged. “Relax, you’re going to be fine.”
“And you know this how?”
“You’ve got me.” She beamed pointing at herself.
“Wow that makes me feel so much better.” I said sarcastically, rolling my eyes.
“Grumpy bear. Right, we’ll make an appointment with the doctor just to check you are pregnant and we’ll deal with it after that.”
“Okay.” I sighed giving her a weak smile. I walked over to the sink and began washing my hands.
“Ew, you touched me after you checked the pregnancy test without washing your hands?” Leah asked looking horrified.
“Oops accident.” I told her repeating what she had just said a minute ago.
“Urghh Nina! Now I have your pee all over me!”
“I barely touched your arms, I didn’t rub my hands all over you.” I said turning off the sink and reaching for the tissue.
“Whatever! I’m going to go take a long shower.” She shouted before walking out of my bathroom.
I tossed the used tissue in the bin and walked out of the bathroom and into my bedroom. I threw myself across the bed and turned to face the ceiling that was painted an awful green colour that was nauseating to look at.
Placing my hands gently on my stomach, I closed my eyes and inhaled deeply.
How was I going to get myself out of this mess?
I could feel my heart pounding rapidly as I nervously rubbed my hands and swallowed harshly. Today was the day I was going to have my first appointment and to say I was petrified would be an understatement. I’ve been delaying visiting the doctor for almost a week, knowing once the doctor confirms what I already know it would become more real. I wasn’t ready for that.
I had hoping that I wasn’t pregnant and it was all a mistake but as soon as the morning sickness kicked in I knew my hoping was in vain. I was definitely pregnant, my life was definitely over.
“Nina Michaels.” A voice called out making my heart pound even faster. I glanced over at Leah who came with me for moral support and clutched her hands.
“I can’t do this. I’m not ready.” I whispered, feeling extremely panicked.
“Come on, you can do this. It’s just a little appointment.” Leah said soothingly, standing up and tugging me with her.
We slowly walked over to the nurse who called my name and she directed us to Dr Lane’s room. Breathing in slowly and deeply I sat down on one of the chairs and looked at Dr Lane who smiled at me politely.
After a being asked a few questions, Dr Lane took a sample of my blood, handed me a cup to pee in, checked my weight and did a few other things like checking blood pressure and temperature.
“Well Nina, it looks like you are definitely pregnant. Do you know when you were last on your period?” Dr Lane asked me while Leah gently squeezed my hands.
“Yeah.” I whispered, my voice sounding scratchy even to my ears. “It was the 28th of January.”
“Right, I’ll just calculate your baby’s due date.” She gave me a reassuring smile and proceeded to type on her computer. I looked over to Leah who gave my hands another light squeeze.
“Well looks like the 4th of November is the day and you are currently eight weeks and 5 days along. However keep in mind that only about 3 to 5% of babies are actually born on their due dates, so this is more of an estimate of around the time you’re baby will be here.” She smiled again and typed a little bit more on her computer.
This is finally happening, it’s confirmed. I’m having a baby.
“Nina, if you could hop up on the bed and we’ll find your baby’s heartbeat.” Dr Lane told me grabbing the Doppler.
“N-no.” I stuttered standing up. “I’m not ready for this, I can’t do this. Oh god.” Without looking at either Dr Lane or Leah I lunged for the door and ran out of the room, ignoring them as they shouted my name.
Tears began to fall as I raced through the waiting room and out of the hospital. This is actually happening, I’m pregnant. I slumped against the wall and closed my eyes, not caring if anyone saw me as I began to sob.
I made a mistake, one stupid mistake and now my whole life is going to change. Abortion was not an option for me, I couldn’t kill my baby. He or she was innocent in this. Adoption wasn’t an option for me either, I couldn’t abandon it. I had lived my whole life wishing I had my parents, I couldn’t do that to another person.
I’m so close to graduating, so close to reaching what I had worked my ass off for and I got myself pregnant. Why didn’t I make sure he used a condom? How could I have been so stupid?
“Hey Nina?” I heard Leah say softly. I opened my eyes and met her worried eyes.
I choked out a sob and wrapped my arms around Leah, she hugged me back tightly whispering in my ears that I was going to be fine, everything was going to be fine.
After a few minutes of us staying like this I pulled away from Leah and brushed away the tears that rolled down my cheeks. “I’m going to keep the baby.” I whispered hoarsely, my voice cracking slightly. “This is my fault, I’m just going to have to deal with it.”
“Okay.” Leah simply said, nodding her head. “What about the father?” She asked after a minute of silence.
“I don’t know if I should, how do I even tell him? I don’t even know him, what if he doesn’t believe me? What if he thinks I’m lying? I don’t have any way to contact him, I left the hotel before he woke up.” I quickly said as panic began to bubble in my chest.
“We’ll find and then we’ll think of how to tell him. You’re not alone Nina, I’ll be here for you every step of the way.”
I nodded and gave her a smile knowing how lucky I was to have her. I don’t think I would have been able to cope without her support.
“Time to find your baby daddy.”
