Late Night Stroll
I stood at the end of the empty corridor. I enjoyed taking a walk around the school especially when no one is around to yell at me to get to class. Even though I wasn't allowed I still liked to wander. I guess that's what I am a wanderer. When I was younger my family moved a lot. There wasn't really a good reason for it except the fact that my mother's jobs were all contracts and not permanent. I didn't mind though. I enjoyed seeing all the different places. It wasn't until my father died when I was thirteen that we stopped moving. We found a nice area and stayed. From then on it was just me my mother and my two baby twin sisters. That's right just when my father died we found out mum was pregnant. That reminds me. I need to call them later. I still couldn't believe the two were already talking. What was that? I wonder. A shadow had just crossed my path. No one was suppose to be here. It was even to late for the janitor and the night guard said he wouldn't be out tonight. We're on good terms and he knows I won't cause any trouble. I turn down the hall I had seen the shadow go and watch as they turn down another hallway. I start to run hoping to catch up with them. I turn a corner and run smack dab into someone.
"Ouch!" I exclaim falling back. I glare up not being able to see the person because of my hair. I stand up and brush myself off. Who did this person think they were? They must have heard my footsteps I was running pretty loudly. I pull my hair back grabbing the hair band off my arm. I stare. He stares. We stand there staring at each other for quiet a while.
"Lysis?" He asks me and I look away.
"Austin." I reply. I didn't know what to do in a situation like this. Austin was in all my classes but I knew nothing about him. We met at the beginning of the school year and he asked to be my friend but I turned him down. He was my best friend's ex. What else was I suppose to do? I just told him the truth and that was it.
"What are you doing here at like 2 in the morning?" He asked me.
"I should be asking you the same question but if you must know I frequently walk the grounds after hours." I said and Austin laughed at me.
"Wow, so formal. Do you normally talk to people that way?"
"If you have a problem with my speech then you can contact my nonexistent complaint line." I said.
"Alright, no need to get snippy." Austin said looking defensive. I didn't mean it like that I was just tired. It's the middle of the night for goodness sake I wasn't prepared for this.
"I'm sorry, Austin. I'm just tired, I don't normally take walks this late but I had to study for a while." I said with a sigh. I shivered as the wind blew down the hall. In the back of my head I wondered how that was possible since we were in an enclosed building but I ignored it.
"It's fine. Let me walk you back to your dorm." Austin said and I was hesitant to go anywhere with him since he was basically a stranger but decided it was better than walking back alone.
"Fine." I said and he smiled. I followed him as he began to walk off. He didn't say anything as we walked and I stared at his back. Austin was way taller than me which was disconcerting because I'm not used to having to look up when speaking with someone.
"How's school?" He asked finally just as we were nearing the exit. We still had a while to go before reaching the dorms however.
"It's good. I'm doing well in all my classes except Science. I don't understand how anyone can memorize the periodic table." I said groaning. It had taken me hours of studying to remember the first group let alone the whole thing.
"Yeah, I'm glad I have a photographic memory or there would no way." Austin said laughing. I scowled at him.
"No fair! You're probably going to get the top score." I said shaking my head.
"Don't I always?" He said.
"No, actually if you will check right now I am the current holder of the top spot in all my classes except choir." I said confidently. I probably came off full of myself but I was pleased with my accomplishments. I had to work hard to reach that spot but it was worth it. Now though I was probably going to loose it to the elements, literally, but I didn't care I could easily get it back by the end of the year.
"Let's go back to the school building then if you're so sure but I can bet you that I am currently in the top place in English." He said and I scoffed at him. Austin was smart but English was my best subject. I had a 99% in that class and unless he by some miracle obtained a 100% I was the best.
"No way! You're on. I'll race you there just to say I beat you twice." I said ignoring the fact that were in front of my dorm.
"Fine by me. You're on." Austin said getting ready. "3-2-1- Go!"
The both of us started to run but we didn't get very far.
