Chapter 60

I gave him the silent treatment the entire night. Any question asked, I ignored. I fixed myself a sandwich, putting away all the leftovers and made him fix his own. He wasn’t happy about that but didn’t say a word. Afterwards, I stayed on the floor, playing with Logan while Mike read his newspaper. I think it was something for him to do while he stared at me. That was what I was doing when Corey sent me the first text. After reading it, I smiled.

Mike looked up. “Who’s that?” He leaned over, trying to get a better look.

I pulled the phone away from his prying eyes, continuing to text back. “Excuse me. When you get a phone call or a text, I don’t ask you who it is. It’s none of your fuckin’ business, that’s who.”

He grumbled and went back to rifling his newspaper. “You’re being ridiculous.”

Corey: Did you do it?

Me: Not yet, silly. This sort of thing takes a little more time than one night. Besides, I want to see that fax. I need to know who sent it before I just start accusing people of stuff. There’s more to this whole plan than even I knew and it’s driving me crazy.

Corey: True. That makes sense, actually. I just hope it doesn’t take too long. I miss you. I miss sleeping beside you and waking up to your beautiful face. I think I have a great idea. I wish I could talk to you on the phone. I hate texting.

Me: Well, I told Mike that I’m sleeping in the nursery tonight. It’s almost time for Logan’s bedtime. I’ll call you once I get him put down.

Corey: I can’t wait. I love you.

Me: Love you back.

After we finished with our text, I put my phone in my pocket. Pushing off the floor, I playfully shoved my head into Logan’s belly. His hands instantly grabbed my hair as he giggled. Wrapping my hands around his little bottom, I stood up balancing him on top of my head like a hat, listening to his squeals of laughter.

“Okay little man, it’s time for your bath, an’ then to bed.” I walked up the stairs to the nursery. “Up we go… it’s night-night time.”

“Wait. I don’t get to say goodnight to him?” He yelled up to me. “What the fuck, Elyse! He’s my son too, you know! Elyse!”

I stopped. Rolling my eyes, I turned around and headed back down to Mike. “Sorry, ya seemed to be into your paper. I didn’t think ya wanted to be disturbed.”

He glared at me, grumbling as he took Logan. “My boy is not a disturbance. Are you. Hey, Buddy.” He wrapped his arms around him, kissing his whole face and tickling his belly.

Logan laughed, squealing with delight as he pulled on his face. He was happy to see ‘daddy’ and that was obvious. I suddenly got a pang in my heart as I realized the one who was going to suffer the most was the one thing I wanted more than anything: Logan. He was going to lose one dad for another. Even though I thought it was leveling up, he really loved Mike.

“I missed you today. How’s my big handsome man?” He leaned closer to him, whispering loud enough for me to hear. “Do me a favor. Tell your mama that you don’t want a brother or sister. They are nasty. Eww. Always stealing your toys, taking attention away from you. You’d rather be an only child and keep all the kisses.” I rolled my eyes at his words. He kissed him on the cheek again, before handing him up to me. “Thank you!”

Snuggling him into me, I tickled his neck with my nose. “Come on, buuuuddy. Let’s get ya ready for bed. Mommy’s sleepin’ in your room tonight.”

He continued pulling my hair as we walked upstairs, laughing. He was a happy baby and it showed.

Mike groaned, going back to reading his paper. “You’re being ridiculous about this.”

Once we were inside the nursery, I locked the door. I made sure I had the keys so Mike couldn’t get in. I gave Logan a bath, and put clean pajamas on him. He took his pacifier and I turned on his lullaby music. It was like an instant knockout drug for him.

I stepped into the closet after turning on the TV and called Corey.

“Well hello there. I’ve been waiting for you to call me, just laying here thinking about how I can’t wait to see you again.”

I chuckled, nibbling on my bottom lip. He sounded so sexy. In my mind, I heard bow-chick-a-bow-wow and thought about one of those calls. Just his voice on the phone turned me on. “Are ya now?”

“I am. Why are you talking so softly? I can barely hear you.”

“…because I’m hidin’ out in Logan’s closet to talk to you.”

“Oh. That makes sense. How would you like to run away with me tomorrow?”

“What are ya talkin’ about? How? Where?”

“I want you to stay the night with me tomorrow… maybe even the weekend?”

My heart fluttered at the thought of being in his arms again, spending a weekend with him. He was like a cool breeze on a hot day. Correction, he was like a hot burst of air on a cold day, warming your body to the depths of your soul. Oh, that sounded like such a wonderful idea, but he knew I couldn’t. “Are ya forgettin’ about somethin’?”

“No. I don’t think so.”

“I have a husband. How am I supposed to justify stayin’ gone overnight… much less all weekend?”

“I don’t know. I didn’t think that far into the planning.”

My mind was going a million miles a minute just trying to think of some way to make it happen. I knew it was wrong, but really, after what Mike did… nothing I did could be considered as wrong. Two wrongs might not make a right but it sure makes you feel damn good!

“I could always tell him I need some time away.” I thought about using Tania’s plan, once again. “I already started the ball rollin’ tonight. I told him I wanted another baby.”

I could hear him growl. “How is that going to help us if you sleep with him? I have to tell you… I forbid you to sleep with him. Pick another room or you’re leaving him tonight.”

I chuckled. His jealousy made me feel good. “I told ya that I’m sleepin’ in the nursery. I picked a fight with him. He always fights when I mention havin’ a baby an’ now I know why. However, that fight could explain why I wanna leave. He’s refusin’ to go the clinic, again. I believe we want two different things in life. I need time to think.”

“Damn. That is good. Remind me to never piss you off.”

“I’ll just leave a note when I go tomorrow an’ pack enough stuff for me an’ Logan for a weekend.”

“Nice. So, bring some clothes for you and Cordero Junior and we’ll plan a weekend together. Maybe we’ll go somewhere other than here, so that no one sees us out together and we can enjoy our time. Remember when that lady saw us and asked how long we were together?”

I smiled in remembrance. “Yes. I’ve seen that moment so many times. It’s one of the memories that haunted my dreams. I’d wake up holdin’ onto my pillow, wishin’ it was you.”

“Well, we’ll go somewhere and make some new memories to go along with those. I want every day that we spend together to be a memory that you never forget.”

The man should be a writer with the way he seduced my soul with just mere words. “Ya know, we could just name our next son after you.”

“That’s a thought.”

“That’s what I thought too. Okay, I’m feelin’ really tired an’ this closet isn’t the most comfortable place. I’ll see you guys tomorrow mornin’.”

“I really want to see a picture of that. Okay, sweet dreams, Alicia. I’ll see you tomorrow… the earlier the better. I love you.”

I smiled. Every time he said those words to me it was as if my heart took flight, sprouting wings, just flying around in my chest. “I love you too.”
