Prologue

*4 hours earlier*

I was standing on a cliff listening and taking in the calm of the night, I could smell fresh pine in the air, hear it calling me sweetly as the wind rustled through the trees like a siren calls the sailors. I wanted to run, to forget what was about to happen, to my brother, to my mom, to my pack.... to me. I never wanted to be alpha, I was happy being beta but now.... I had no choice.

When my father died, I was only 8 and my brother was 12, my mother ran the pack till my brother was 16 and took over, winning in the fight for dominance. A fight where all the eligible males come together and take each other on one by one until it is down to two, and the winner becomes the Alpha Male of the pack. I was still too young to even participate and I was fine with it. But now I’m 23 and my brother has just come back from a battle with a rival pack. I was patiently awaiting news because he had told me to stay behind, I knew that he was hurt but I had no idea how badly.

“Oberon, come quickly, they have him in the ICU, Doctor Brian asked to speak to you immediately.” My mother came up behind me, tears in her eyes and seconds from losing it. I wrapped her in my big strong arms, hugging her with all my might and love. I knew right then, seeing her in the state she was in, that it was bad… very bad.

She hugged back and after a short while, she touched my shoulder, nodding her head for me to go, not trusting herself to speak as a lonely tear glided down her soft cheek. I quickly shifted and ran as fast as I could to the pack house, hearing her soft sobs behind me as she fell to her knees.

We had an infirmary wing that was kept below ground in the pack house on the West side. Rooms for those who have already been seen and still needed to heal were on the first floor so they could at least look outside. As soon as I got there, my best friend, Olcan, was waiting with a pair of sweatpants for me and his mother Lidia had gone to comfort my mother. I knew the second I left she had collapsed in a heap where I once stood, no longer able to handle the hurt and pain of her eldest son. My heart broke into thousands of pieces and I wished I could take on the pain for her.

“Oberon, you may come in now.” I heard Brian call.

“Tell it to me straight doc, what are we looking at?” I asked with worry and authority already laced in my voice. The alpha tie was getting weaker and the tone of an alpha was already beginning to become prominent in my voice.

“He was badly hurt. I have stopped the bleeding the best that I can but… he has had his stomach cut open, his organ leaked out and he has lost to much blood, they seemed to have taken, or at least eaten, a few of his internal organs as well. I am sorry Oberon but I…. I can’t save him, I have tried everything. Even with the accelerated healing that all werewolves have, it wasn’t enough. I have stitched up and bound the wounds that I can, I have even done a blood transfusion. He is in the room right across the hall. You may go see him.” The tears began to stream down his face, his voice cracking as he told me everything. I could already feel the sting of the tears ready to spill from my eyes. Brian and my brother had been close because he was like an uncle, to both of us.

My mind began to race as I walked to my brother’s room…

One step… I was scared shit less, how can a beta with no mate be alpha? It goes against pack rules.

Two steps… But I was still beta and needed to take control till we held out next dominance fight. The bad thing is I knew I’d win.

Three steps… I was the biggest in the pack at 215 lbs. of raw muscle, 6′ 5" tall, and the ladies never did disagree with my looks.

Four steps… I’ve always been a leader, never shy, and always damn good in a fight. I knew my place and everyone else knew theirs.

Five steps… I had that air about me that demanded respect, and because of the person I was, it wasn’t hard to earn it.

They all echoed so loudly I thought my ear drums would break; everything was moving in slow motion. Suddenly I came out of my daze as I hear my mother call for me, I didn’t realize she had gone into the room my brother was in.

“Oberon get in here, NOW!” she cried. Running quickly into the room I saw his hand reaching up for mine. I grabbed it and rested it back on the bed holding on tight, tears already streaming down my face. I knew he was about to die from the look of fear hidden behind his stony grey eyes. He tried as hard as he could to look brave and not let onto any pain he was feeling. My mother was over my shoulder and trying her hardest not to shed anymore tears, wanting to be brave for her son.

“Take care of our pack or I will come back and haunt your ass, and you know I mean it.” He sounded a little scared and tried to hide behind his humor. His voice was rough and almost a whisper. I laughed slightly, trying to hide that I was also scared if not more so than him. At least he would be with dad now. “Don’t worry Jack, nothing bad is going to happen while I’m around, I promise on father’s grave.” He looked solemn and let go as he told me to give him a minute alone with Mom. I left the room but as soon as I did, I felt the alpha tie cut and I knew he was gone. My mother howled out in agony and sadness for her eldest son. I could feel my heart ache already.

I ran back into the room screaming, trying to get to him.

“Bring him back! He can’t leave us, BRING HIM BACK!” I shouted, tears flowing freely that couldn’t be stopped no matter what anyone said.

“Jack! Please don’t leave me! I need you, please don’t leave me Brother.” I cried hard into his unmoving chest. I felt Olcan pulling me off my brothers limp body gently.

“Dude, he is gone, there is no way we can bring him back. I was now the acting alpha and I was scared. That was until I heard an unfamiliar howl in the night. Olcan heard it too and looked at me knowingly. Why on tonight of all nights does a rogue have to be in the territory? Maybe it was the rogue who killed my brother, coming back to see if the job was done.

It sounded familiar, like a calling from a loved one, I could tell that whoever it came from, they were joyous and they weren’t from around here. I was on the edge and looking for a fight, and a howl of pure happiness only deepened my suspicion of a rogue. I ran quickly into the night Olcan yelling at me. Leaping through the window and shifting as soon as my feet hit the ground, I headed east where the howl came from, my teeth ready to rip into the next thing it saw.
