Chapter 1: The Clinic

Tears run down my cheeks. The tile sends goosebumps all over my skin. I’ve been distraught by the toilet for 2 hours already. My 5 am alarm goes off in the background, startling me from my position on the floor.

I've been vomiting for an entire week now. I switched to an all-liquid diet by the 3rd day. Let’s be honest, liquids are much better coming back up.

At least it’s finally Saturday. I can run to the clinic and try to get some medicine for this stomach flu. I have to be super careful, though. If Luca finds out I’m sneaking around to the clinic, I’ll be in big trouble.

It should be pretty easy to keep it from him. For the last month, he’s been on the other side of the world. The only real problem is the multitude of baby sitt-, I mean bodyguards he hired to follow me.

You gotta figure something out. I tell myself as I get up off the tile. I stumble over to my sink and stare at my reflection in the mirror. At first glance, you’d believe me to be happy, content even. But a second look into my bottomless blue eyes would no doubt give away how I truly feel.

You might wonder what you would see. Emptiness. Loneliness.

I thought after the last 3 years, something would have changed. I hoped he would even so much as throw a second glance my way. But he hasn’t. He hasn’t even looked me in the eye since our wedding day almost 3 years ago.

We’ve only had sex 4 times in the last almost three years, each time has been initiated by me. The last time was at the beginning of July a few weeks ago. I'm sure it's because he gets it from elsewhere. Nothing in the contract forbade it.

Even though it was a marriage of convenience and I knew this before ever signing the contract, I still longed for love and happiness. I’ve been thinking a lot about the contract.

Miss Olivia Baker, party A, is to be the wife of Luca Knight, party B. The minimum requirement is 2 years. After, either party can end the agreement at any point, for any reason.

After the termination of the contract, both parties are under a strict no-contact order for a minimum of 6 months. Party A is to be given 100 million dollars and a start-up to any business.

Yadda... yadda... yadda...

Out of the 100s of pages, this is all I remember word for word.

It’s been 3 years already. Every day I ask myself why Luca hasn’t ended the contract yet. It’s obvious he doesn’t have feelings for me, so why is he hellbent on keeping me around?

Pushing the thoughts out of my head, I finish my morning routine. I choose a soft, beige cotton summer dress since it’s in the mid-70s. I pair the dress with some sandals and leave my long, warm brown hair in its naturally curly state. After pulling on a cashmere cardigan, I rush downstairs to the kitchen to drink my breakfast smoothie.

Initially, it bothered me to look around and see bodyguards just lingering everywhere, staring at me as if I was going to spontaneously combust. But over the last 3 years, I’ve grown to ignore it. Luca was out of his mind to assign this team of mercenaries to protect me. You can tell they’d rather be anywhere else than here playing babysitter to some billionaire playboy’s fake wife.

I go to the mall with 5 bodyguards in tow. With only two days until our 3rd wedding anniversary, I want to get Luca something nice. He’s expected back that day and for the last two years, he hasn’t missed it.

While leaving the jewelry store with his gift on order, a custom-made Patek Philippe watch that took us hours to design, my stomach starts churning with vomit threatening to escape.

I take off to the closest restroom. After emptying the contents of my stomach, I go to the sink and clean myself up. Throwing up has become such a common occurrence, I packed a toiletry bag so I can brush my teeth.

After cleaning myself up, I begin to head to the entrance where my bodyguards are waiting for me until I see another entrance, an entrance they probably aren’t aware of. Quickly looking back and forth between the two exits, I have a decision to make.

Now’s your chance Liv. Run! And run I do. In 5 minutes flat, I’m in a cab and on the way to the clinic. I’ll deal with the consequences later.

“Congratulations are in order, Miss Baker.” The doctor states unknowingly.

So I used my maiden name. Who cares? Had I come in here spewing “Mrs. Knight” from my mouth, Luca would’ve known before the doc even came back to talk to me.

“I’m sorry Dr. Richards, I’m confused. Congratulations? For what?”

“You’re pregnant Miss Baker. 7 weeks to be exact. The fact you’re having such strong symptoms, amongst other things, leads me to believe you might have multiples. My intuition says, twins.” He smiles at me, not knowing this changes my entire life.

“Wh-what? Pregnant? M-multiples? I-, th-there’s no way doctor! Are you sure? Can we please do the test again?”

“Oh, I’m certain, Miss Baker. Your hCG levels are off the charts. Do you currently have a primary care OB?”

“Um, no. I honestly wasn’t expecting to need one for quite some time.”

“That’s all right. I’ll have the ladies at the front desk send you an email with some and you can have a pick, okay? Oh, and one more thing, Miss Baker, I’m starting you on some vitamins and anti-nausea medications so make sure to stop by the pharmacy down the block to pick those up.”

“Thanks,” I mumble quietly as he leaves the room.

Pregnant? With Luca’s babies? What the hell am I going to do?
