CHAPTER 16

Xavier

“May I come in?,” I saw Ron peeping his head from the door looking at me with a small smile on his alabaster face.

“You may,,” I said and returned back to my file going through it thoroughly for any mistakes.

“Sir!” he said as he kept a piece of paper on my table.

I looked up at him through my glasses and took the paper to read.

“It’s the preparation list for the silver jubilee this year sir,” he said and I checked the list.

“Oh, yeah! The company is completing its twenty-five years this year,” I said and he nodded.

“It’s in this end of the month,” he said and I nodded.

“I know” was my curt reply.

“So tell me about the preparations,,” I said keeping my files aside.

“Like it has been written on the list, we have already sent invitation to some important guests.Venue has been selected, catering and organisers has been finalised” he said and I nodded.

“But,” he said and I looked up at him to find him scratching his neck looking uncomfortable.

“But?,” I asked.

“Um Sir has specially ordered me to-” he pursed his lips and looked here and there.

“Dad? What did he order you?,” I asked getting impatient.

“He wants a party,” he said making me scoffed.

“Aren’t this a type of party?,” I asked twirling the pen in between my finger.

“Um a different type of,” he said and I narrowed my eyes at him.

“He actually wants a competition.Where people of our company will take part. ”

“Precise?,” I asked

“A couple dance competition to be precise” he completed.

I sighed and rubbed the bridge of my nose in aggravation.

“That old man!,” I muttered.

I picked up my phone and dialled his number. It rang for few times and then it got disconnected.

I sighed.

“What’s wrong?” Ron asked me.

“He cut my call,,” I said and kept the phone on the table.

“I guess he knew I was going to call him for this. That old man!,” I thought and looked up at Ron.

“Do as he has asked you to do,” I said and kept my elbow on the armrest and intertwined my fingers across each other.

“Will you be joining the competition?” he askedas he gathered up the papers.

“Me?,” I asked.

“I mean you and Ma’am.It’s a couple dance competitions after all” he said and I thought about it.

“Uh I am sorry for being noi-,” I cut him off “Count us in. ”

“We will participate,,” I said and saw as he began to grin.

“What’s with that grinning?,” I asked.

“I have heard Sir talking a lot about Ma’am.I never got a chance to meet her.We all are expecting to meet her in the function” he said and I nodded understanding.

“Of course,” I muttered.

“I am going back home.I am done here,” I said as I got up from my seat and wore my Jacket.

“But what about the meeti-”

“Don’t ask me dumb questions.Handle it of course” was my curt answer. He nodded and began to arrange all the papers on my table.

As I made my way towards the door I couldn’t help but to stop when I imagined Angel looking at me with disapproval.

I sighed for the umpteenth time of the day.

“The things you are doing to me,” I muttered and pulled the jacket more to me.

“Ron!,” I called.

“Yes sir?” He said.

“Will you please reschedule my meeting?,” I asked.

I heard the faint noise of papers and files falling on the ground.

“That idiot lost it,,” I thought.

“Of-of course sir,” I heard his befuddled voice.

“And you can too take the day off,,” I said and exited the room but I did heard a thud voice.

“What’s wrong with everyone? Was I that crude to everyone that my civilized behavior is looking odd to them?,” I thought and rubbed my forehead while walking towards the elevator.

On reaching home, I went towards my room and changed into my black trouser and white shirt.

“Angela?,” I called searching for her.

“Angel?,” I knocked on her door. When she didn’t respond I opened the door only to find no one in the room.

“Where is she?,” I thought.

“Lucy where is Angela?,” I asked once I reached the kitchen.

“She went out to buying something. She will be back soon though,” she said and I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion.

“Why didn’t she tell me if she wanted to buy something? I would have taken her,” I thought and went towards the living room.

I sat on the couch and flipped through channels not finding anything interesting.

The doorbell rang and I was first to get up on my feet.

“Must be Angel,” I thought and walked towards the door stopping Lucy on my way.She nodded and smiled at me.I went towards the door and opened it only to reveal a girl whose name is Jenny or maybe was it Nancy?

“What do you want? Get lost!,” I said and was ready to ready to slam the door on her face but stopped when she put her hand between the door and the wall to stop me.

“Are you crazy? What do you think are you doing?,” I growled at her.

“I am sorry for disturbing you bu-,” I cut the red hair girl before me “See I don’t want to do anything. It was just a one-night stand so please leave.I don’t want any disturbance,” I said strictly while she shook her head wanting to say something.

“I am not here to cause any problem. Please listen to me,” she said and I looked at her.

She looked different today.Unlike the last time she was actually wearing a black blouse and a black jeans with a van.Her hair was neatly tied up and she looked decent.

I remember how she looked when I brought her home that day.She was wearing exceptionally revealing dress and had sultry make up on her face.I threw her out of my house after our night stand when she refused to leave.

I was that type of person who never kept any relationship with a night stand.

“What is it?,” I asked in my professional cold tone.

I didn’t want her to think anything which she would find hope on or think that something was between us.

“I want something back,,” she said which made me narrow my eyes at her.

“I am not giving you any money. So get lo-,” she cut me off.

“Who do you think I am? I am not here to ask for any money.I am not a beggar neither am I a plotting anything.I belong to a reputable family and I am here only to take back a precious thing which I left here the last time uh the last time I came here,” she said and I looked at her skeptically.

“What thing?,” I asked being skeptical.

“A chain with a small pendant,,” she said which made me confused.

“What chain? There is no chain-”

“I think the last time when yo-,” she paused and looked uncomfortable for a moment before speaking “When you tore my dress from the front, it fell off my neck in your bedroom,,” she said and for a moment my brain got blanked.

“No there is nothing like that.So go away no-,” I was about to slam the door when she interrupted

“Please! Please that chain is very important to me now.I have been searching for it for so many days and then I recalled losing it the last time I came here. ”

“Look it’s already been so many months to that incident and I never spotted any chain in my room.If I find it anyways I will return it back to you.So please leave,” I said curtly but she shook her head no.

“Please you are not understanding. That’s very important to me.Please let me look for it by myself for once,” she begged.

“What? Are you craz-”

“Please I am begging you,” she forced and I took in her expression. She looked as if she was in the verge of crying.

“Fine! But if you don’t find it.Don’t come back ever,” I said and saw her smiling nodding.

“Thank you.I promise I won’t cause you any disturbance,” she said and I opened the door wide open for her to enter.

“You know the way,,” I said and she nodded walking towards my bedroom.I closed the door and went after her.

I saw her looking under my bed, my table, even under the nightstand.

“I am not getting it,,” she said with a broken voice.

“Look if it is that expensive then let me pay you for it.I was the one who threw it after all,” I said and took out my wallet.

“No you don’t understand. It’s not about money,” she said and got up on her feet from her kneeling position.

“Then?,” I asked curiously.

“That was close to my heart,,” she said and I stood silently wanting her to complete.

“It was given to me by my boyfriend,,” she said and confusion marred my face hearing that.

“If you had a boyfriend then why the hell did you sleep with me?,” I questioned somehow feeling anger growing inside me.

“We had a break up,,” she said looking broken.

“The day we met in that club, I was drunk.I just wanted to get over the fact that we were done.I found him cheating on me.I wanted to do the same to him. That’s why I came with you,” she said with a broken voice.

A glimpse of my past fell like a curtain before me and I gulped not wanting to remember it.

Getting cheated was the most painful thing one could ever suffer.

“But few days back he came back to me.He told me that he was absolutely drunk when he cheated on me and wants to amend the thing between us.He declared that he was terribly sorry for breaking my heart and he was incomplete without me,” she said with a small smile and I crossed my arms across my chest nodding.

“At first I thought that he was just trying to get back into my pants but,” she paused for a moment.

“But?,” I questioned.

“There came a time when he met this accident and went into a coma,,” she said with a hoarse voice and finally she lost it.She cried standing there and I stood there uncomfortably thinking what to do.

“But before he went in coma he confessed that he truly loved me.He wanted me to give him a last chance. He told me to come wearing that chain that he gifted me in my last birthday. If I did, he would take it as that he has been forgiven and I am willing to give him a chance but I failed to do that.Because he met with an accident which sent him into coma and most importantly I lost that chain,” she began to sob harder and I went near her and offered her the napkin.

“Thank you,,” she said gratefully and took the napkin from me.

“Now what I am going to do.I don’t understand.I know that he is in a temporary coma.He would be back soon but I want to meet him with the chain telling him that I still love him and I am willing to forgive him,” she cried.

“What am I supposed to do now?,” she cried.

I patted her shoulder feeling awkward. She stopped crying and composed herself before smiling at me.

“Sorry I lost control,,” she said and I nodded understanding.

“I guess I have lost it forever,,” she said with a broken voice and I looked sympathetically at her.

“Just go and stay with him until he comes back again.Tell him the truth.I am sure that he will understand. It’s been very long after all,” I consoled her and she bit down on her lips probably stopping herself from crying.

“Thank you for understanding. It looks like it isn’t here.I will be leaving now,” she said and walked towards the door.

“Wait!,” I said and she stopped on her track.

“I am sorry,,” I said which made her look at me wide yet confused eyes.

“I am sorry for the way I treated you back then. For throwing you out of my house.Uh you know,” I rubbed the back of my head.

“It’s okay.I understand.I was a stranger after all,” she said and I shook my head.

“No! I mean I shouldn’t have treated you like that. For which I am truly sorry,” I said genuinely to which she returned a smile.

“I guess I have heard it wrong,” she muttered and I looked at her with confusion.

“I have heard that you are a cold, cruel, ruthless type of person who never apologizes for anything. But I guess I have heard wrong,” she said and I looked the other way.

“She has heard correct though,,” I thought.

“Or maybe you have changed” her statement made me look at her with wide eyes.

“Oh, so it is love then,,” she said smiling at me.

“Love? And me? What the hell,” I thought.

“I’m a psychologist by the way.I do understand people’s psychology,” she said and I quirked my eyebrow.

“So does it look like as if I am in love?,” I asked and she shrugged.

“I don’t know you that well,,” she said.

“But I know one thing though,,” she said making me look at her questionably.

“Love do change a person’s heart,,” she said and I shifted on my legs uncomfortably.

“And I think I am right,” she muttered but I heard her but pretended as if I didn’t hear her.

“What did you say?,” I asked pretentiously.

“Oh, nothing,,” she said with a smile.

“I shall take my leave now,,” she said and walked out of my room.

I stood there for some minute before sighing.

“Love,,” I said and a smile broke on to my face thinking about Angela.

I walked out of my room and stopped when I saw the woman standing before me with her back facing me.

“Hey what’s wrong?,” I asked and looked over her only to feel my heart racing up seeing Angela standing before her with a stoic face.

“Angela,,” I said.

She looked at me and then at the woman and then her eyes glanced towards my room.

“Oh, no! Damn it Xavier. What if she gets a wrong impression over this?” my inner voice yelled at me.
