Act One - Epilogue
"Who was that monster?" I asked as Micaela stood up from the leather couch.
"Not who. What." She moved near the window.
"All right, what?"
"As far as we can tell, an automaton controlled by someone else."
I frowned. "How do you know that?"
She looked over at me. "When we pulled open the helmet later, there was no body inside."
"So who do you think was controlling it?" I asked, jotting a note down.
She didn't answer, drawing my eye. Micaela stood, looking out the window, arms folded across her torso. I opened my mouth to repeat the question, then thought better of it. She remained there, silent for several moments, staring out the window.
"You're quiet," she whispered, not moving.
"As are you."
"So. Now what?" She turned to look at me.
"What happened next?" I waved a hand at my notes. "You left me hanging."
"At least you know I survived."
I furrowed my brow at her. "I already knew that much. Just not how."
"Now you know."
"But I'm missing so much. How did Quentin get there in time? How did he escape the shadow assassins? What about Suyef? Your brother? The facility?" I glanced at my notes. "And what was making all that racket at the prison? How did you end up here? How are you a friend of the queen?"
Micaela didn't answer. She turned and walked towards the exit.
"Do you need a break?" I called after her.
She paused in the doorway and looked over her shoulder at me.
"You need answers from someone else now."
I shook my head. "Who? Quentin? Where is he?"
"Ask Suyef," she whispered and walked out.
