Chapter 13: Anomaly

"How're they doing Nate?" asked Carl.

He shook his head as he looked back at Amelia.

"She's got a really weak body; her gift puts tremendous strain on her so she's not cut out for prolonged fights," he explained.

He then brought up a medical record, detailing a lot of information about her.

"She's got a very powerful gift...she can manipulate the pull of gravity over objects she chooses but I guess the downside is that she can't do it for long," said Oliver.
"What exactly is wrong with her body?" asked Fabiana.

Nate pointed to a paragraph on her medical records.

"She has some kind of anemia...I've never seen something like this before so I'm guessing it must be a mutated strain that works on superhumans," he explained.
"Is it curable?" asked Fabiana.

He shook his head.

"I'm not sure...I've never even seen this disease before,"
"She's going to be fine though right?" asked Iris.

Nate nodded as he turned to Angela.

"She's impressive; her gift allows her to manipulate air. That explains why she was able to keep them at bay for so long." he said.

Fabiana shook her head.

"Remind me never to get in a fight with her then." she said.
"She broke her arm during the fight...but that's nothing some bio-foam won't solve." he said.

He then got to his feet before making his way over to Kit.

"They just need to rest up for a while but what's more concerning to me is Kit,"

He turned to the sleeping man.

"He's physically perfect...nothing wrong with him apart from being a little tired but what concerns me is his brainwave patterns,"

The screen showed a bunch of wild lines, going in large peaks and back to normal again.

"I don't exactly know what's going on inside that head of his...but it seems to be what's keeping him asleep," he said.
"It's no doubt what he had to do in order to get out of that situation,"

Oliver stepped forward and looked at Kit.

"He must've found a way to tap into the Predatory State or at the very least figured out how to use some of the power," he said.

He pointed to the brainwaves.

"These waves are exactly the kind of activity that anyone in the Predatory State would give off, that must've been the reason why he hesitated...because he wasn't sure if he would be able to remain in control," he explained.

Nate put a hand to his chin.

"You mean to tell me that he can tap into the Predatory State by simply willing it?" asked Fabiana.
"It's a lot like me; I assimilated someone who had complete control over the state which allows me to tap into it with willpower as well as keep my judgement but...for him? I don't know," said Carl.
"It's easier for Eagles to fall into the state because of our extremely heightened emotions; Kit went through a lot in his younger days so he must've kept those thoughts in his mind in order to let the anger become his power," said Iris.

She shook her head and looked away.

"I'm never going to go that far ever again...it was incredibly reckless of him to do that because with his powers? The state would spell death to anyone within a ten mile radius," she said.

She then proceeded to put a hand on his cheek.

"Even though he's an idiot...it had to have been difficult for him to make that decision because he knew what he was risking so kudos to you for thinking quickly," she said

Nate then gasped suddenly.

"What the...this can't be right," he said.
"What's wrong?" asked Mili.

He typed frantically for a few moments before he shook his head.

"This is strange...the scanner is detecting two gifts spun into his Raptor gene set...but it says only one is active," he said.
"That doesn't make sense; I know he has some grade of telepathic power but shouldn't his healing factor be the second one?" asked Oliver.

Nate shook his head.

"His healing factor isn't it; the sequence isn't spun in the genes...it seems his second gift is dormant within him and I have no idea how to decipher it," he replied.

Oliver put a hand to his chin.

"That doesn't make sense; Kit's healing factor is worlds beyond any of ours...are you saying that it's possible that it might be artificial?" he asked.
"I don't know what to say but his healing isn't one of his gifts,"

The group looked to his sleeping form.

"...Then what is he?" asked Iris.
"An anomaly," replied Nate.

I slowly stirred from my slumber upon feeling a hand on mine. I opened my eyes to see a pale-skinned man in dress shirt and pants.

"You're finally awake," he said.

I sat up, rubbing my head from the lack of blood flow.

"Where am I?" I asked.
"You're safe; we're all friends here," he said.

I let out a breath of relief as I looked around for any sign of Kit.

"Where's Kit?" I asked.
"He disappeared; we went to gather everything we needed for the move and he just disappeared," he replied.

I swallowed hard.

"And my sister?"
"Upstairs having some lunch. Everyone's fine." he replied.

I gripped my head, letting out a deep sigh of relief.

"I...don't remember much after he asked me to hold onto him," I explained.
"You probably passed out from the strain on your body; you exhausted yourself fighting all those Vultures and Kit had to carry you here...at nearly twelve times the speed of sound," he explained.

I gasped loudly.

"How did he do that?!" I stuttered.
"It appears he's learned to tap into the Predatory State at will and he forced himself to do so in order to get you here safely...when you three arrived, he slept nearly the entire time he was here," he explained.

"That must've been the reason why he asked me if I trusted him..."

"He...flew at almost 12 times the speed of sound?" I gasped.
"That's right; he got here in about 2 minutes once he took off from the fight...I'm amazed that he was able to maintain that shield over both you and your sister throughout all of that so I guess you can thank him when he comes back," he said.

I nodded slowly.

"And you are?"
"Nathaniel Jaggnaut, you can call me Nate," he said.

I nodded slowly.

"You need no introduction Miss Rosario; your reputation precedes you," he said.
"Thank you," I said with a smile.
"She's awakened now has she?"

I turned to see a man dressed in some kind of black suit with a dark blue tie.

"You're just in time; we're going to a party," he said.
"Who are you?" I asked.

The man approached me and held out a hand.

"Oliver Walsh, I'm the one who sent Kit to France to get you and your sister," he explained.

I shook his hand and nodded respectfully.

"I have a contact at a local nightclub and she'll be the last person to join the cause until we make the move," he explained.
"Move?" I asked.
"We're going to be heading for Australia at the end of the week; it's safer for us there while our numbers grow," he said.
"So we're heading some kind of rebellion now are we?" chuckled Nate.
"I suppose you could call it that," replied Oliver.

He then gestured me to follow him but I shook my head.

"Where's Kit?" I asked.

Oliver shook his head.

"He went outside to meditate and I haven't seen him since...but he said he would meet us at the nightclub," he explained.

Even though I wasn't satisfied with his answer, I swallowed my doubt and followed him out of the room.
