Chapter 1

Kaylee dropped to her hands and knees and prepared to vomit. Mal bent over and pushed her hair back from her face. It was only a dry heave and Mal helped her back to her feet.

The pounding on Serenity’s cockpit door was only getting louder and more intense. Zoe slammed the door with the butt of her rifle as she screamed out “Chui Se!”

Jayne turned to face Zoe and said, “I second that!” He slammed the door with Vera’s butt and yelled “Shut the gorram up!” It really sucked being out of ammo.

Mal said to River , “You know what to do, right darlin’?” River turned her head to answer. “ Hit atmo at wrong angle...die.”

“Well, yeah.” Mal said softly.

Simon was standing behind his sister, his hand on her shoulder. He was ignoring the banging, thinking about seven years ago when they were two heroes heavier, and River first took over piloting duties on the ship. Now twenty-four, River was still a creature of extraordinary grace, but still had trouble eating an ice planet.

Inara was looking at Mal who was still holding on to a weak Kaylee. Mal turned to look at Inara, his wife of five years, and as their eyes met, a forced smile formed on their faces.

Flashes of light were penetrating Serenity’s windshield, her buffer panels slowly deteriorating. The ship was bouncing, making noises not heard before by the crew.

Mal always knew Badger would try to exact vengeance on him and his crew, but didn’t think even a low life like Badger would go this far. But he did. The forty-two Reavers on the other side of the cockpit door were testament to that.

“Captain!” River yelled out at Mal. She looked to her left, so did Mal. Tiny bits of plasma were starting to enter the cockpit, vaporizing the electronics.

“That’s it , we’re humped.” Jayne let out under his breath.

“We end it our way, right Captain? Not the way someone else wants us to go, right?” Kaylee said to Mal.

“That’s right little Kaylee, our way.” Mal said back.

Inara walked behind Mal and Kaylee, embracing them both. Jayne held Vera tight against his chest, also holding on to the cunning hat his mom had made him so many years ago.

Simon held on to River, looking down at her. All he could say was “I’m sorry.” River looked at him and said, “Don’t be such a boob.” She smiled as tears ran down her cheeks.

The cockpit door was giving way, the screams and banging getting louder.

“Getting a little hot in here Captain.” Zoe said to Mal. “That it is, Zoe, that it is.” Mal said back.

The atmosphere of Greenleaf was now entering Serenity, like a blowtorch gone mad.

Kaylee looked up at Mal and said “Look at the lights Captain, aren’t they pret…….”

Angel S. Adames Corraliza: Sensational! As a fan of superheroes, I have to say, you have a real winner of a story so far. I like that you made Allison a Wonder Woman expy, but kept her likable and relate-able in this first chapter. You showed us the Mother while also glancing at the Superhero, which I think is important to...

Guywithgunz: Vanessa's saga has been an ongoing labor of love for the author and her core gp of fans. The saga as a whole is a must read for fans of Adventure / SciFi stories. PaulSenkel: If you like Arthur C. Clarke's Odyssey, especially The Final Odyssey, then you will probably also enjoy this book. I definitely did.It does, however, address a more adolescent public than the above-mentioned book.I enjoyed the story and finished it in a few days. The overall situation on earth an...

Steve Lang: I thought this story was imaginative, and well thought out. I also think it was an original piece, and not a rehash of previous scifi stories I've read in the past.Thank you for the effort put into this tale, and I look forward to reading more of your work!

Roger A. Fauble: Excellent read, the only thing not to like is that I could only read it at home on my computer. I'm a character reader, I get into the characters, their story, who/what they are. In this story characters are introduced and developed allowing you to really get into them. Next the story is develop...

Nate_L: I started to read this, excited about the story line. The writing style only made me more excited, I was stunned by Mikes ability to put this kind of story into words. It's Dashner-style, simple but sophisticated... (Makes sense to me, lol!)The beginning was a tad confusing, as I thought she was ...

Jasmine Chow: As I read this story, I was reminded some what of Terry Pratchett, especially some descriptions of politics and economics. The sci-fic setting is quite intriguing. Writing style is quite lovely and grew on me slowly. I was also slightly reminded of Mark Twain, especially his book A Connecticut Ya...

Raymond Keith Moon: Great story arc. Nice command of the balance of overview and detail. Feels a bit like a multi-player computer game, but provides satisfying explanations for all the apparent magic. Please keep writing!

John Reed: Seadrias masterfully captures the impressiveness and complex scope that a science fiction novel should provide while carefully crafting an entire universe that will leave a reader in awe from start to finish. dapharoah69: I gotta hand it to you. This was a great read from start to finish. I am a big fan of witches, thanks to Anne Rice. The characters really reeled me in from the very first few chapters. You make reading fun.

Michael L. Blood: It took only a few paragraphs to "hook me" and keep me riveted throughout the remainder of the story. I have read very little if any "short stories" since "Dandelion Wine" and my freshman year in college in the early 70s - this one measures up with the best of them. The author assumes some de...
