Chapter 14

It was the first time I've seen her like this. Every second she backed away from me even more, trembling. She couldn't look straight at me and I just stood there, speechless. I knew I had to comfort her, to tell her it's going to be okay but I couldn't bring myself to move. I was the source of her suffering from the start, and now I'm making it worse.

I thought I could just go on and about, trying to fix her mistakes to lift some weight off her shoulders. I don't know what I did wrong, why she was so terrified but I knew I couldn't stay.

Just one last time, I thought. Let me embrace her, then I'll leave. I could feel someone giving a wide creepy grin behind me. Just waiting for me to lose my will and give up. Just waiting there until it has a chance to take me. It must have been Zeke, but why now... why now when everything was suppose to lead to my new beginning?

"Why..." Hailey said in a frail voice. I could sense that she was trying so hard to hold back her tears, I could hear the hoarse sound in her throat. Still, I just stood there, doing nothing.

"Why did you try to kill me?" she asked. My eyes widened at her question. I had no idea what she was saying but if I really did unconsciously, I couldn't forgive myself.

"What... did I do?" I asked imprudently.

"Don't act stupid!" she screamed. "Tell me why you did it! I know it was you, Tyler! I should have known from the start. Those blue eyes, that black pendant. You tried to kill me two times!" accuses, I thought. Could I really have done anything like that?

"I don't understand" I said.

"Get out of here and don't ever come back! I don't want to see you or get myself involved with you ever again." she said as tears were running down her cheeks. I tried to slowly reach out to her.

"Don't you dare touch me! Leave me alone, Tyler!"

"Hailey, I didn't do it or at least I know I didn't. I can't even think about killing you because I -"

"LIAR! Get out now!" she said screaming and crying. I left through the window, looking at her from a distance. 'I can't even think about killing you... because I love you' I wanted to say but it was too late.

I found myself, floating in front her house again the next day. No matter how much she told me to go, I couldn't help it. I had to see that she was okay before I can get off of this unnerving feeling in my chest. As I try to slip through like I usually do, something felt wrong. It was as if I wasn't ethereal anymore. I couldn't get in, I couldn't pass through.

"There's a talisman" a voice said. It was Zeke and as always, I didn't feel a presence. The angels were just suddenly there.

"I bet you're happy now" I said with a scowl.

"Have you gone insane, child?" Zeke replied with a raised eyebrow.

"Don't word play with me, you're here to take me aren't you? You sent Gail yesterday so I could be happy one last time, didn't you?"

"I beg your pardon, I just got here and I didn't even know Gazardiel was here. Even if I wanted to drag you down to hell now for that attitude, I couldn't until the entity binding you to Earth is gone."

"That's the longest line you've ever said" I said sarcastically.

"I don't like these accusations. Do you have proof that I planned any of this?"

"I felt your wide grin yesterday behind me. Sent chills to my spine but I was certain it was you because you said it yourself, you could just take my soul if you wanted."

"You felt my grin? That is absurd. I bet you couldn't even feel my presence just now." Zeke pointed out. He was right, as much as I would like to admit it, I really can't sense angels so it wasn't him yesterday surrounded by such dark and evil aura.

"but if you sensed someone, it could have been the entity" Zeke said after my moment of silence.

"you mean the entity is another spirit?"

"it could be"

"why would that other spirit be concerned with me?"

"that, I cannot answer. But a bit more information could help us figure out" he said. I know he was trying to be positive but something about his stern look just makes it seem a lot of nerve-wracking than encouraging.

"Hailey said I tried to kill her, she said she saw my eyes and my pendant during the two times she experienced near death" I said gloomily.

"Then maybe the entity is a doppelganger."
