Chapter 7

“Well, answer the phone, Jensen. Just keep acting like everything is normal.” Mike stared at me as he pushed the phone back at me.

“Hello,” I answered the phone before it went to voicemail. I could hear Joseph’s smirk through the phone and I wanted to smack it off his face.

“Jensen, my friend. How have you been? I was told you were out of town.” I wonder who told him that.

“Yes, I had some business to attend to in Chicago. I will be returning shortly. The man I left in charge in New York is capable of handling everything in my absence.” His voice heightened a little.

“What a coincidence, I am in Chicago as well right now. I do have something I would like to discuss with you, would you mind meeting with me tomorrow morning.” I thought about it for a second. I should meet with him to keep up a good front.

“Alright, I can do that but I can’t be long I have a lot of things that I need to take care of,” I said.

“Wonderful. I will text you the details. I will see you tomorrow.”

After I hung up the phone I noticed everyone staring at me. Mike spoke first. “So what’s going on?” I laughed a little.

“The dumb ass wants to meet with me tomorrow morning. He said he has something to discuss with me. I should just end this shit now. It would be too easy.” Mike glared at me.

“No Jensen, until we know everything that we need to about Joseph you will play it cool. That’s an order.” I was starting to get over this whole taking orders from Mike thing.

“Who the fuck do you think you are? You haven’t told me what to do in two years and now all of a sudden you want to boss me around. Well, I don’t think I want to play that shit.” Mike stood and walked over to me and we stood nose to nose.

“Look here Jensen, I have been going easy on you because I know you are hurting. But this is my home and my gang so as long as you are here you will do things my way. Don’t make me do something I will regret, bro.”

We both stood there glaring at each other, neither of us wanting to back down. This may be his home but I was tired of being under his shadow. Finally, I decided that it was better to play by his rules for now if I wanted his help with taking down Joseph. “Fine Mike, we will do it your way for now. But if shit starts to get too serious then we do it my way. I have been working with Joseph for a year now and I have come to one conclusion, he gets what he wants. This means that if he wants Lynn he won’t stop until he has her.” Mike finally relaxed but I could see the concern in his face.

“I don’t know why the fuck I agreed to help her. I knew that this was going to be bad but I didn’t realize how bad. Maybe I should tell her to just go.”

Shit no, I can’t let him do that. “Mike, I know this seems bad now but you promised her you would help. We can do this, together. Besides, Catherine would have killed you for breaking your promise.” Mike laughed at the thought of Cat getting pissed at him.

“I guess your right. Okay so for now let’s just stick to the plan. Meet with Joseph and act like all is normal for now. If we are lucky he doesn’t know she is here.” I nodded and then decided I should get back to the house.

“Alright, I will call or stop by after my meeting. I better get back to the house, my boys are already drooling over her and if I’m not there they won’t stay focused.” Mike and Trevor both started laughing again and I just shook my head and left.

As I drove back to the house I couldn’t help but wonder what it was that Joseph wanted to talk to me about. It struck me as weird that he just happened to show up in Chicago days after I got here and then wants to meet with me. My heart started to race as the thought of him knowing that I had what he wanted crossed my mind. I needed more time to prepare to take him down, I was far from ready for that. It was possible that he knew but I tried to push the thought from my mind. When I got back to the house I walked into the smell of bacon and eggs cooking and the sound of music coming from the kitchen. When I walked in I stood in the doorway staring at the sight in front of me.

Lynn stood at the stove with her back to the door, she was swaying her hips to the music as she effortlessly prepared breakfast. Her blonde hair fell to the middle of her back and bounced with every move she made. She was beautiful and I could feel the urge in my pants, but I quickly pushed the thought from my mind. All of a sudden I heard her soft voice as she started to sing along to the song that was playing. “Pour some sugar on me...” I cleared my throat making her jump knocking the pan of hot grease and bacon on to her foot. “Oww, fuck that hurts.” She dropped to the ground and I quickly ran over to her. I lifted her up and set her on the counter and gently took her foot into my hand and started to clean the grease from it. It was already turning bright red so I knew it would hurt for a few days but she would be fine.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.” I looked up and she was staring down into my eyes. Our eyes locked and I felt something inside me that I hadn’t felt in a long time. My hand left her foot and I gently lifted her up from the counter and placed her down on the ground. My hands crest her back as she slowly slid down to a standing position in front of me. Our bodies were close and I could feel the heat between us and her rapid breathing as I pushed a piece of hair from her face. Damn, what am I doing? I thought to myself, as I quickly pushed away from her. “What are you doing anyway?” I said as I walked over and picked the pan up from the ground.

“I was making some breakfast for all of you. I wanted to thank you for helping me.”

I placed the pan in the sink and turned to face her. She had grabbed a towel and was down cleaning the grease and bacon from the floor. Her ass swayed as she was cleaning the floor and I could see her pink thong sticking out from her pants. I quickly turned away from her. “You don’t have to cook for us. We can take care of ourselves. Just stay out of my way and behave yourself and we should get along fine.” I said harshly. Her eyes widened and I saw the hurt in her eyes.

“Oh, okay. I really don’t mind cooking it gives me something to do.” Her voice broke a little as I saw tears forming in her eyes. Shit, women drive me crazy with their crying bullshit. She quickly turned from me and threw the bacon pieces in the trash and turned the stove off. I left her in the kitchen and went to the study. Damn, this woman is already driving me crazy. I couldn’t understand the moment I just had in the kitchen with her. The last time I had that feeling was with Catherine and I was not going to allow myself to get that close to this woman. I quickly drove the thought from my mind and decided that it was just lust. It had to be that, I mean all the other men around her seem to grovel at her feet. Yeah, that’s it, I just want to fuck her I thought to myself.

Lynn’s POV

I jumped at the sound that came from behind me, causing the pan I was holding to fall to the ground splashing grease all over my foot. “Oww. Fuck that hurts.” I dropped to the ground and tried to quickly wipe the grease off my foot. The next thing I knew I was being lifted into his arms and placed on the counter. I watched in awe as he gently took my foot and cleaned the grease from it. “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to scare you.” I looked down at him and our eyes locked. He was so good looking and I could feel my body start to heat as his eyes stared into mine. I could see his mind racing but I couldn’t figure out what he was thinking. He finished cleaning my foot and then gently lifted me up and set my feet on the ground in front of him. His hands slowly went up my back as I slid to a standing position. His rock hard body was pressed against mine and my breathing became more rapid as his hand lifted to my face and brushed a piece of hair from it. I could feel the tension between us for just a minute I thought he felt it too.

Then just as quickly as he had rushed to my aid, he pushed me from him and walked over to pick the pan up. “What were you doing anyway?” He said as he picked the pan up.

“I was making breakfast for all of you. I wanted to thank you for helping me.” I grabbed a towel and bent down to clean the mess up from the floor.

“You don’t have to cook for us. We can take care of ourselves. Just stay out of my way and behave yourself and we should get along fine.” His words were harsh and hit me like a brick wall. I could already feel the tears.

“Oh, okay. I don’t mind cooking it gives me something to do.” I heard my voice break a little as I tried to fight back the tears. I don’t know why his words had hurt, but they did. I didn’t want him to see me cry so I quickly turned and threw the bacon pieces in the trash and turned the stove off. He didn’t say anything else as he turned and left the kitchen, leaving me alone.

I needed to get myself together. Why his words affected me that way, I don’t honestly know. I found him attractive, but I don’t think he felt the same, or if he did he wasn’t showing it. I quickly finished cleaning the kitchen and went upstairs to my room. Maybe I was just emotionally drained from everything that had gone on. That must be why I let his actions and words hurt me. I had been an emotional mess since I started running a year ago. I never felt safe and was always looking over my shoulder. Now I felt a little bit better knowing that someone was protecting me but I needed to control my emotions. I laid on my bed and drifted off to sleep, maybe I will feel better after a quick nap.

Jensen’s POV

I didn’t sleep much. I couldn’t get the meeting with Joseph off my mind or Lynn. I finally got up, giving up on sleep and walked down the hall towards the stairs. As I walked past Lynn’s room I stopped at her door. I listened for a moment and didn’t hear anything so I quietly pushed the door open and looked in. She was sleeping soundly, fully clothed, and I couldn’t help but have that feeling again as I stared at her. She isn’t Catherine, I told myself. She is just another stupid bitch that you obviously want to fuck. I quietly closed the door and went down to the kitchen. I grabbed a bottle of water and chugged it down. Maybe I should just sleep with her and get it over with. I need my mind to be clear and she is already fucking with it. I thought about it for a minute then shook the thought from my mind. No, I don’t need to make things more complicated.

A few hours later I was sitting at a little coffee shop downtown waiting for Joseph. The shop buzzed with commotion as people came in and out. Finally, I looked up and saw him walk in. He saw me and walked over and took a seat. He was dressed in a suit and tie, which was not his usual style. “Jensen, so nice to see you. I trust that everything is going well with your business here.” I nodded at him.

“It would be going better if I wasn’t sitting here waiting for you. Your late.” He flashed me a grin.

“I apologize for my tardiness. I was, well let’s just say I also was taking care of some business.” I eyed him for a minute then spoke up.

“Well, what is it that you wanted to discuss? I need to get back.” He laughed.

“Always so eager. Okay. I have a job that I would like for you to do for me.”

I watched as he pulled an envelope from his pocket and placed it on the table. He pushed it over to me and I opened it. Inside were pictures. I tried to fight back my emotions as I stared at the pictures. “Alright what am I looking at? What do you want me to do?” He was watching my reaction closely.

“I need you to collect her for me and bring her back to me in New York. I will pay you, of course, once the job is done.” I stared down at the pictures again.

“What do you want with her?” His eyes glared into mine.

“That is my business. Can you do this or are you not the man I thought you were.” I stared right back at him and leaned in closer.

“I can do it. I just want to make sure she isn’t another one of your whores or soon to be whore. I don’t do the sex slave business.” He laughed loudly as I leaned back and crossed my arms.

“Don’t worry my boy, this one is different. She belongs to me. I expect you can handle this quickly.” He said as he got up from the table. I nodded. “Good, I will give you a month. Only because she has been hard to track down. If you don’t deliver I will hire someone else.” He left and I stared down at the pictures again. They were pictures of Lynn. What did I just do?
