Opening my eyes, it’s still dark out, Logan is still asleep next to me; only now he’s human, he changed back in his sleep. Creeping out of bed, trying not to wake him. I got dressed and went out.
Quietly going down the stairs, checking on Wren she’s asleep still. That’s good.
Going back up, heading outside, locking the door behind me, I have to get out there and start looking for those monsters. They have ruined everything I hold dear. Changing into my wolf I ran into the forest, retracing my steps to where I lost the wolves.
Finding the blood trail, it’s faint, but it’s still there. Taking a deep whiff I started following the cent, it’s getting fainter and fainter with every step I take, until it’s gone all together. They have to be living around here somewhere close by. Changing course, running deeper into the forest.
Getting closer to town, they wouldn’t be this close to town, it’s far too risky. Although, they could be, if they have always been here, no one would know the difference. It would be the perfect hiding place. But in the time I’ve been here, I haven’t smelt another werewolf. Never even smelt an ordinary wolf. They must have found a way to mask there cent when being in the town. Chuffing I turned back, heading back to my property; so no one in town will see me. Running through the forest, feeling the ground under my paws and the wind through my fur.
Taking a different route home, making a stop near some caves around the forest, I’ve checked them before, but there has never been any kind of animal anywhere near them. Sniffing each cave, but there are no scents anywhere. Not even a small rabbit. Changing course, making my way back to my property.
Getting back to the edge of my backyard, circling making sure there’s nothing around. Walking up to the house, as I changed back to human form, the door flew open and Logan walked out, arms folded across his chest.
“Where were you?” “Doing a search of the forest.” I said walking past him into the house. “Why didn’t you wait for me? I would have gone out with you.” Walking into the kitchen, I started pulling things out for breakfast. “I didn’t wait, because I wasn’t going to put you in danger. Plus I needed someone to stay and keep an eye on Wren.” Mixing some eggs I put some bacon and sausage in the oven. We have to get her to eat something, she is going to need all the strength she can get to make it through her first change.
“So what is going to happen tonight?” Sighing.
“We are going to keep her downstairs and keep a close eye on her; and hope that she makes it through the change.” “Is there a chance that she couldn’t come through it?” “Yeah. There is always the chance. It doesn’t happen very often, but it does happen.” “What will happen if she doesn’t make it through her first change?” “She’ll die. Or she’ll go insane, and we’ll have to put her down.” I whisper, trying not to break down.
Arms wrapping around my waist, holding me close. “It’s going to be okay Lil. It won’t come to that. She will come through this, I know she will.” Turning around, wrapping my arms around his neck; holding him close.
“Thank you Logan.” Letting go, I finished making food. “Here let me, you go check on Wren.” Nodding I left him to the cooking while I went downstairs to the cell. Opening the door a crack, listening in, there’s no sounds inside. Opening the door, the cell is empty.
“Wren where are you?” Running upstairs, starting to search, then the bathroom door opened, and Wren walked out, in a fresh set of clothing. “There you are. Are you okay?” “Yeah. I just needed to have a quick shower. Are you all right? You look a little green.” Nodding, I pulled her into my arms, holding her in a tight embrace. “Lil. It’s okay. I’m okay.” Moving back, looking her over, she still have the bandages on, but she looks a lot better than when we put her to bed. “Come on, let’s get out there. Food is on.” I said taking her hand, leading her out to the living room. Logan has set food out on the table.
“Wren how are you feeling?” “Better thank you.” She said sitting at the table. “I’m glad. You gave us both a scare. Don’t ever do anything like this again. I mean it.” “Yes sir. I didn’t mean to scare you. It all happened so fast, I’m sorry; I should have been paying better attention to my surroundings.” “Alright enough of this talk for now. Dig in before it gets cold.” Pouring each of us a coffee, we filled our plates. “So what is going to happen to me tonight?”
Wren asked taking a bite of her food. Setting my fork down, I said.
“Well at sundown we will head down to the basement, put you where we put Logan and wait for it to happen. This will be the only meal you can eat today. When you make the change, everything can come up; trust me you don’t want that.” I can feel the fear coming from her now that she knows. Setting my hand on hers.
“Everything’s going to be fine Wren. You will make it through this, I know you will.”
After we ate, I went downstairs getting the cell ready for her. What am I going to do if things don’t work out? I can’t do this without Wren. She’s the only family I have, she has to make it through this; she just has to.
Wiping my eyes, I went over to an old trunk, I haven’t opened this for a long time, not since I went back to my old pack. Pulling out the small sacks, when we go there, we’ll have to run there in wolf forms, then change back to human form. I never thought I would go back there, but now; with having two new wolves I have to. I have no choice.
They have to find out from me, and not someone else. I don’t know what could happen to us if they do. I won’t let anything happen to them, there my family, my pack I won’t lose them. Not to anyone, or anything.
“Lil you down here?” Logan called running down the stairs. Closing the trunk, lifting the sacks over my shoulder. “What is it?” “There’s a car outside, I don’t smell anything different, there humans.” “Okay. Let’s head up.” Throwing him the sacks we went upstairs. “Take these to my room, I’ll go see who is outside. I want you both to stay in the house, no matter what.” He nodded, disappearing down the hall.
Grabbing my gun and badge, going out to see who our unwanted visitor is.
“Can I help you?” I asked closing the door behind me. “Yes ma’am. I’m looking for Logan Brown.” “Why would you think he was here?” Looking the woman up and down, she looks a little older than me, blond hair pulled into a bun, bright blue eyes. “I showed his photo around town, and was seen with you and they told me where to find you.” “Who are you? And why should I trust you with anything?” “I’m his girlfriend. He went away for a hiking trip, he promised he would call me, but he never did. I got worried, so I came out looking for him. So is he here, or what?”
“Stay here. I don’t want you in my home.” Going inside. How could this happen? I mean there isn’t anything between us. I don’t even know why I’m upset about this. “Logan!” I yelled, setting my gun on the table, along with my badge. Listening to him walk down the hall, towards me.
“What is it Lil? Who’s outside?” Not looking at him I said. “Your girlfriend. She was worried about you, so she came looking for you.” He didn’t say anything, just looked outside. “Well go on, she’s waiting.” I said going to the kitchen. Hearing the door close, a single tear rolling down my cheek. “Hey what’s going on out here?” Wren asked coming into the kitchen. “Logan’s girlfriend came out here looking for him. He’s out there talking to her now.”
“Are you okay?” “Why wouldn’t I be? There’s nothing be-tween us. It doesn’t matter what he does. He can do whatever he wants.” “You don’t really mean that. You care about him, I know you do.” “It doesn’t matter what I think, it’s his life; not I’m.”
Walking away, I went to my room closing the door.
Lying down, I had no idea that something like this could happen. When he came into my life, I thought that I could have more of a family besides Wren. But now all that’s gone. Someone started knocking on my door.
“Come in.” Logan walked in, closing the door, sitting on the end of my bed.
“Why aren’t you with your girlfriend?” “I’m sorry Lilith. I never thought she would come looking for me. Before I left; I told her, that I didn’t want to be with her anymore. You see I thought I loved her, but then she cheated on me. She wants to get back together, but I don’t want her.” “Why are you telling me this?” I asked sitting up in bed. “I’m not leaving. I would stay here, if you let me. I love this place, and I never want leave.”
“You don’t have to leave, if you don’t want to. As long as you want it, you will have a place to live here, under this roof.”
Giving him a hug, breathing in his scent, he smells like the forest, and home.
Moving back, wiping my eyes. “We should head back out there. Wren will start to wonder what is happening down here.” Climbing off the bed, as I reached for the door handle; but a hand clasped around my arm, spinning me around, pinning me to the door.
Before I can say anything, Logan crashed his lips to mine. Quickly responding, I started kissing him back, harder.
His lips are so soft, he smells like the forest, and winter. When he finally moved back, we’re both breathing hard. Looking into his eyes, the way he’s looking at me, it’s scaring me a little right now.
“Why did you do that?” My voice is barely above a whisper. Leaning his forehead against mine. “I have wanted to do that since I woke up after my change.”
Well that was interesting.
My wolf Mira said. She’s been quiet for the past few days, since all this started, I’m surprised that she’s still even there, in the back of my mind.
Of course I’m still here.
Sighing. “We should get out there. We have a couple things to discuss.” He pushed away, allowing me to open the door. Heading out to the living room, Wren is looking out the window. “Who was that?” “My ex.” Logan said going into the kitchen, putting on a pot of coffee.
“There’s something I have to tell you.” I said sitting at the table. “Logan is there this voice in your head? It wouldn’t have appeared until after you became a wolf.”
He wouldn’t look at either one of us, just stared at the counter. “There is, isn’t there? Why didn’t you tell me?” “I thought I was going crazy. He says he’s my inner wolf.” Smiling. “Does he have a name?” “Gabriel. He says that once a wolf is born or created, we get an inner wolf. Who is yours?” Smiling. “Her name is Mira. She’s been quiet, but now she’s back. So Wren that means that after tonight, you will have an inner wolf as well. She will make herself known.” “Her? It’s going to be a her?” Nodding. “Yes. Whatever sex we are, it’s the same as our wolf.” “So when does this start?” “Night fall. But I need to head into town. You both are going to stay here, inside with the doors and windows locked; both of you have a gun loaded with silver bullets. Is that understood?”
They nodded. Heading to my room, I changed and went back out. Grabbing my gun and badge, grabbing my keys and purse.
“I won’t be gone very long. Do not leave this house. If anyone comes to the door, do not open it.” “We understand. Everything will be fine. I promise.” Taking my phone I went to the garage, starting the car, backing out of the garage, Logan is on the front porch staring at me.
Why is he staring at you like that?
“I have no idea.” Heading towards town, I know what she’s implying. He can’t.
You feel it like I do. I know you never believed it, but it’s still out there, every wolf has a mate. I know you feel something towards him.
Sighing I concentrated on the road, heading back towards town. Is there any way that she can be right?
I always thought that the whole ‘mate’ thing wasn’t real. I mean yes I feel something for him, I just thought that I thought he was cute. I never thought that it could be the whole mate bond thing.
Just admit it to yourself. It will be easier that way. Just let yourself feel it.
“Fine. I admit it, I like him. I do, but it can’t be the mate bond.” She didn’t say anything else, but I can feel her there in my mind, she’s singing love songs at the top of her lungs. Sighing neither one of us said a word as I drove into town.
I have no idea what I’m doing right now. Parking the car, maybe walking around town I’ll smell the wolves or something. “Hey Lil.” Walking into the bakery, I’ll get a treat for after Wren’s change tonight. “Hey Mia. How’s it going?” “Good. What can I do for you?”
Looking through the cases, I have no idea what to get. “Look I have something to ask you.” “What is it?” “Have you noticed anyone odd in town? They might be sick, or something.” “Not that I’ve noticed. Why do you ask? Is this about those attacks?” “Maybe. I can’t talk about it really.”
Placing my order. “Can I leave it here? I won’t be gone long.” “Sure thing.” “Thanks.” Leaving the shop, walking around. It’s the middle of November, its cold I can feel winter quickly approaching. I love the winter, running through the snow in wolf form. “Hey Lil.” Turning around, Peter is walking towards me. “Hey Peter. Why aren’t you at work?” He’s a cop. “Maddie’s sick again. I’m getting some medicine.” “That sucks.” “Are you looking for those wolves?” Nodding. “Yeah. I can’t find them out in the woods, then I thought maybe they live near town or something. I have to find them.” Looking around, making sure that no one can hear us. “Something did happen out at my place. We were attacked, Wren she was bitten by one of them. She’s in transition.” “I am so sorry Lil.” “Thanks. I have to get going, I told her I wouldn’t be gone long.” Giving him a hug, I left doing a quick lap of the town; there’s no scents of wolves anywhere in town.
Is it possible that they left? After what happened before with Wren?
“I don’t know. It’s possible I guess. But I don’t think so.” Doing one last lap, I went back to the shop, got a coffee and picked up my order, stopped at the post office, grabbed my mail and started home.
Soon I’m going to have to put my snow tires on, out here in the middle of nowhere, you need them.
Mira is itching to get out there and run through the trees, feeling the earth under my paws. Since I was a child, shifting was the best time of my life. I was always a loner when I was little. I would be off on my own, hunting rabbits and other small animals. My first kill was when I was twelve, I killed a stag, he tried to kill me, but I got him first.
When I dragged it into our little village, I thought they would be proud of me; but I was wrong. I was severely reprimanded for it. For my punishment wasn’t allowed to change for a month, and I was held in our prison for a week. By the time I was allowed to change again my wolf was so weak, I thought I would be stuck as a wolf for the rest of my life. As soon as I was old enough I left and never turned back. I didn’t need them, I became a rogue, without a pack, but maybe now I’ll have that again, with Wren and Logan, I’ll have a pack that I can trust and that trust me. That I love, and that love me in return.
Pulling into my driveway, its well after three, Wren will be starving, but she can’t eat anything until after tonight, then she will eat everything in sight.
You know, it has been far too long since we went out for a proper hunt. Perhaps this is such an occasion to head out, and hunt.
“Perhaps.” I said pulling into the garage, stepping out of the car grabbing the two boxes from the back seat, along with my purse. Unlocking the door, relocking it behind me, there’s no noises coming from inside. That scares me a little.
Going into the kitchen, setting the boxes in the fridge.
“Hello? Anyone here?” Heading downstairs, there they are, staring at the cage. “What’s going on down here?” “Hey.” Logan said not looking at me. “What’s going on down here? Is everything okay down here?” “Just staring at the thing I’ll once again be stuck in while my body changes, and a new form emerges. Does it hurt, when you change?”
Sitting next to them, staring at the cage. “Not really, it just feels weird is all. When it finishes, it feels so right; like it was always supposed to be there. It’s not like anything you have ever felt in your life. You’ll be fine. Stronger, faster, you can see things you couldn’t before.” Hugging her, we stayed like that for who knows how long, in silence. That is until Logan’s stomach decided to make itself known.
“Well I guess we should head up and feed the beast.” Going upstairs, Logan went to make us something to eat while Wren and I went down to my room.
Sitting on my bed, arm around her.
“How are you feeling, really?” “I’m okay. A little nervous.” “You’re going to be okay. Then tomorrow we will go to my old pack and see what they say.” “What do you think will happen to us? What will they do to us?”
“Nothing. I won’t let them hurt you. They hurt me enough when I was young, and I will never go through that again, and neither will you.” She gave me a look. I never told her about what they did to me all those years ago. And I won’t. I can’t tell her, I won’t burden her with that. There my inner demons, I won’t burden anyone else. “Don’t give me that look. And don’t even think about asking about my past; I am not going to tell you. Now let’s go, the three of us have to talk about tomorrow.” “Fine. But don’t even think that this is conversation is over.” Going to the door.
“Oh yes it is.” I said going down the hall, Logan is at the table, a plate of sandwiches and a jug of juice.
Sitting at the table, taking a deep breath.
“So what’s going to happen tomorrow?” Logan asked, pouring us each a glass. “Well. We will have to go in wolf form; I have packs that we can take some provisions in.” “How long will we be gone?” “Well it will take a day to get there, tomorrow being Saturday, get there by nightfall. Then hopefully get back by Sunday night. Whatever you do, do not challenge the Alpha; he will kill us all. So after we’re done eating, we get ready, so we can leave first thing tomorrow morning.”
You must tell them about the link. As well as the possibility that they might find there mate while there.
Sighing. I know she’s right about the mind link, but I don’t want to tell them about the whole finding a mate thing. “So there’s something else I need to tell you.” Taking a sip of juice; I have no idea how I’m going to tell them this. It’s something that I haven’t had to deal with for so long, that I don’t know how to deal with it.
“You see with all wolves, we have the ability to mind link with one another, it’s stronger if you’re all part of a pack. But we should be able to communicate. As well as our wolves, they can talk to each other.” Just like that, I can feel Mira, reaching out to touch Logan’s mind; like she’s taking firm hold of his wolf.
Warmth from Logan, seeping through me, my whole being. “Wow.” I said sighing. “I have never felt anything like that in my life.” Logan nodded, he has the same look on his face.
“That was amazing.” He said, closing his eyes.
“Well now I feel left out. Can I talk to your wolves before I turn?” “No. I’m sorry, you technically don’t have a wolf yet. But soon.” I said setting my hand on hers. Looking at the clock, we don’t have much time, it’s going to be dark soon. “Ok we have to get to work.”
Making a quick job of cleaning up, I grabbed the packs, setting them on the table. “We need food, and water. Also we each need a change of clothes, also a pair of boots. Nothing fancy.”
Heading to each of our rooms, we grabbed a change of clothes, and boots, as well as an extra shirt, and going back out to the living room.
“Alright make them as small as you can, so we have room for food and water.” “If we’re in wolf form, why don’t we just drink water from streams?” “We will, but it’s a long journey.” He nodded, filling a few bottles of water, while Wren and I made some sandwiches, and other stuff. “Could we hunt our food?” “We could, but let’s have normal food to be safe.”
“Do you know what the Alpha is like?”
Wren asked, wrapping a sandwich. “No. The Alpha has changed a couple times since I was young.” I said gently setting them in the packs.
“He’s probably like the Alpha when I was there. He was a brute. He treated people like dirt, and worst of all, they accepted it, and never tried to fight back.”
Touching a scar on my stomach, it was made by a silver knife, it was a lesson as well as a warning to all other wolves. I was young, and don’t even remember what I did to deserve it. After it happened, no one tried to help me, so I got myself home and cleaned up, I almost died from silver poisoning, but I got myself cleaned up, and I got out; but a lot of other wolves weren’t so lucky.
“Hey Lil, you okay?” Nodding, wiping my eyes. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just lost in thought is all. We need to hurry and finish, we don’t have a lot of time.”
Looking at the clock, its well after seven. We need to get this finished, and get her downstairs; before it starts.
