35. Make or Break

Vincent

I reached into my pocket, and pulled out the item. Then I opened the palm of my hand, so she could see what it was.

“My necklace!” she exclaimed.

She reached out to take it, but I closed my fist around it, and moved my hand away.

“I thought it was a gift,” she pouted.

I sighed.

“It was, it is. Do you remember when I gave it to you?”

She nodded.

“When you took me to dinner. Then I...”

Realisation dawned as she stared at my hand then at my face.

I thought for a moment she was going to have another mini melt down, but she didn’t.

“Is that why you agreed to let me go, because you were going to track me again. Has the other necklace got a tracker in it too?” she asked.

I could hear the hurt in her voice. She wasn’t angry, she was upset.

“No Rosie, the other necklace is clean. I was planning to have the tracker taken out of this before I gave it back to you.”

I looked at her, trying to gauge what was going round in her head. She wrapped her arms around her body, and rubbed her hands on her arms.

“Are you cold?”

She shook her head, silently but I grabbed a blanket out of the emergency box anyway, before draping it around her shoulders.

I looked at the necklace in my hand, and turned it over, so the stone was pressed into the palm of my hand.

She looked at it inquisitively.

“What are you doing?”

I forced a smile.

“I’m going to re-enable the tracker. Christian has an app on his phone, it will send a notification. Hopefully it will help them to find us.”

She nodded.

“Like it found me before,” she hesitated, “because you knew I was going to run, it was a setup, wasn’t it?”

I twisted the back of the necklace, and pressed down until I heard a click.

She was staring at me waiting for an answer.

“No Rosie, it wasn’t. I wanted to take you out for dinner, but I did think you might run. I knew Daniel would try and get you back. I just wanted you to be safe. That’s all I ever wanted. To keep you safe and protect you.”

I was surprised when she held out her hand, but I dropped the necklace into it anyway.

She turned it over, looking at the front, then looking at the back.

“Is that why you kidnapped me?”

I shook my head. I wasn’t going to lie to her, not anymore.

“Not at first. It was going to be leverage against your father. Daniel was trying to frame me as the instigator of the murder, when it was he who had done it. He did it to get rid of your father, so he could get hold of you. Incriminating me, was the icing on the cake. Once your father had agreed to testify against Daniel, I was going to let you go.”

Rosie looked at the necklace then she looked at me.

“What changed?”

I pursed my lips, and brushed her cheek with my hand. She didn’t pull away. She just looked at me those ocean blue eyes.

“You did. The moment I saw you tied up with that mongrels filthy hands all over you. I knew...”

She blinked. So slowly it was almost as though she thought if she closed her eyes this would all be a dream.

“Because I looked like my mother?” she asked.

I shook my head, and smiled.

“No, it was more than that. I only dated your mother a few times. Yes she was beautiful, but there was so much more to you than there was to her. Yes, she was a talented musician, and my father liked her. He never liked most of the girls I brought home, but he liked your mother. I did too, but like everything that ever brought me pleasure, Daniel wanted to take from me.”

Rosie pointed towards the partially submerged helicopter.

“Is that him. Is he still trying to hurt me, because he knows it’ll hurt you?”

I nodded.

“It’s not just that Rosie. He wanted you, and if he cant have you, then he doesn’t want anyone to have you.”

Rosie let out a heavy sigh, and tears started to pool in her eyes.

“I’ll never be free of him, will I? Even if I go home, he’ll always be there, trying to hurt me, or even kill me.”

I sighed. It was a truth I never wanted her to face. I truth I don’t think even my father wanted to face.

Daniel was a psychopath, pure and simple. Even from his prison cell he was somehow able to instigate his will.

“I’m sorry Rosie. It wouldn’t matter if I sent you home and never saw you again, he’d still try and hurt you...do you know why?”

She looked at me and shook her head.

“It’s because, Rosie Ryan, I love you, and anything I love Daniel wants to destroy.”

Rosie stared at me. As soon as the words left my lips I knew it would be make or break. She would either run into my arms, or want to run away.

She handed me the necklace back, and as it dropped into my hand, she moved her hands behind her hair and held it up from her neck.

“You better put the necklace on me then.”

I unclipped the link and fastened it around her neck.

“You heard what I said, Rosie?” I questioned, “I said...”

Her forefinger went to my lip, and she smiled.

“Shut-up, and kiss me, you idiot.”

I cupped her cheeks in my hands, and pressed my lips to hers.

Tentatively at first, then as I felt her hands around the back of my neck, I deepened the kiss. I had missed her lips so much, the taste of her.

I gently bit at her bottom lip and she opened her mouth allowing my tongue entry. She wanted to taste me as much as I wanted to taste her.

I grabbed her hands from around my neck and pushed her down. The blanket slid off her shoulders, and I pushed her gently on to it.

I began to trail kisses down her neck.

Holding her tiny wrists in one hand, I trailed my fingertips across the bare flesh of her torso. She arched her back and gasped as I tormented her delicate flesh with the tips of my fingers.

I looked at her and smirked, as my lips peppered her stomach with kisses.

“Vincent...” she moaned, looking over my shoulder.

I looked over my shoulder, and saw the lights in the distance. Then the sound of rotor blades.

“Fuck!” I grumbled, as I released her and grabbed the flare gun from the case.

Rosie giggled, and sat up.

I fired the flare, then looked over at Rosie.

“I’m doomed aren’t I,” I chuckled, “I’m never going to have my wicked way with you at this rate.”

As the rescue chopper landed, Christian jumped out.

“Fuck!” He hissed, “are you two alright?”

I wrapped my arm around Rosie’s waist as we walked towards the chopper.

I nodded.

“We are now. Someone tampered with the fuel line. We need to get back to the yacht, I’ve a bad feeling that this isn’t over.”

Christian paled.

“Fuck, Gianna is still on board, so is your father.”

He shook his head.

“This is fucking Daniel, isn’t it?”

I nodded, as I helped Rosie into the back.

Christian glanced at the necklace, then gave me a pointed look.

I chuckled.

“It’s ok Christian, she knows.”

He frowned.

“And she’s ok with it?” He questioned.

I nodded. Then I leant forward to speak to the pilot.

“I need a rescue chopper sent to the MV Astoria, on-route to Nassau. The person who sabotaged our helicopter may try the same with my yacht. My father and my sister are still on board and I need them out of there.”

The pilot nodded.

I buckled Rosie in, and then buckled myself in. I smiled at her gently as I held her hand in mine.

“Don’t worry Rosie, I promise I’ll look after you.”

I pressed her hand to my lips.

I was going to finish that brother of mine if it was the last thing I did.
