Acts of Kindness

“Okay you smartass, as long as you finish our game of chess, I’ll make a strawberry cake.” I winked and Steven smiled and sat back down in front of me. The fresh air felt good this Sunday morning. About a week ago I was allowed outside. McGreggor has actually been kind to me. Of course, I was warned if I had tried to run I would be chained up, but Steven and I have been pretty convincing over the last two months. We haven’t actually had to do anything major, but we are showing signs of becoming closer. The closer we act the more freedom I seem to receive. I have only seen Deliah twice since the night she tried to talk to me.

Steven hasn’t heard a word from Logan, and I’m just trying to survive this place. “Checkmate,” I said and Steven just sat back and looked at me.

“I don’t know why I play this damn game with you?” I smiled and giggled a little. I stood up and started to clean the game up. The sun was starting to set and I walked back inside. Steven followed me into the kitchen. “What are you doing?”

“I promised you cake.” He took a seat at the bar, as I started to get out all the things I would need for the cake. My mother taught me how to cook and strawberry cake was our favorite one to make. “Oh no, I think we’re out of strawberries?” I heard someone clear their throat. I looked to see McGerggor walking in.

“You need strawberries?” He asked me and I nodded my head. He walked over to Steven and patted him on the back. “Go get her strawberries.” I smiled and went back to getting the rest of the items together. Steven rolled his eyes. My next move was something I didn’t even know I had in me. I walked over to Steven in front of his father. Steven turned and looked at me.

“Please?” I said and then kissed him on the lips. At first, you could tell Steven was in a little bit of shock. I had no idea what was going on with McGerggor as I couldn’t see his face, but then Steven went into action and wrapped his arms around me and kissed me back. I took a step back and Steven opened his eyes at me.

“Alright, only because you asked so nicely.” He said and kissed my cheek. I watched as he walked out of the kitchen and his father followed him.

Steven’s POV,

I was overtaken by Mia’s action. I touched my lips as I walked out, knowing my father would follow and have questions. Once I was outside, he approached me. “So the plan is working?”

“It would seem so,” I said.

“She is a beautiful woman, Steven, if you actually liked her. It would be okay.” I sighed.

“Maybe that the problem father, maybe I do like her and I hate that we’re playing her.” I snapped, feeling confused by my own words. It was true, Mia was a breath of fresh air. She was like a ray of sunshine in this dark world of ours. She is beautiful and full of life and kindness. A genuine kindness with no harmful meaning behind it. She was also sexy in a way that even she didn’t know existed.

“You don’t have to play her son. If she likes you in return. You can have her. I have no intention of harming her. She is actually kind of nice to have around.” Mia had made an impact on everyone here. I know completely understood why Logan had fallen for this girl. If I didn’t know any better. I would already be in love with her myself. I nodded at my father and closed the door. I drove into town and grabbed what Mia needed. My whole way back all I could think about was her kissing me with those soft lips, and I could swear she tasted just like strawberries. Damnit, I hollered out as I smacked the steering wheel. I shook my head and pulled up to the house. I walked in where Mia was softly singing to herself. She was alone in the kitchen. I sat the berries down on the counter and she turned and looked at me.

“I’m sorry Steven.” I frowned.

“For what?”

“Kissing you, I know I must have startled you.” I smiled at her innocents. One thing I liked about her. She was always so honest. “I just thought it was a good idea to do that in front of your father.”

“Don’t be sorry, it was a smart thing to do. He is intrigued by the idea of us. This is what he wants.” I watched her turn and go back to making her cake. “Mia, I promise you this will all be over soon.” I watched her nod her head. I walked over to her and placed my hands on her shoulders. She turned and warped her arms around me for a hug. I sighed and hugged her back. I knew she was worried and she put on a good face. Sometimes you just need someone to be there and damn it, I was going to be there for her.

I hadn’t heard anything from Logan. Even I was starting to have doubts about him coming. It has been almost three months and I think even Mia is starting to give up. My feelings for her have changed over time and if Logan wasn’t going to help her, I sure in the hell was. I had even started on a plan to get her out of here myself. If she and I ran we would have to hide out. At least we would do it together. I’m not totally sure, but I think even Mia has been getting closer to me. It could all be in my head, and I would never want to betray Logan, but at the same time, where the hell was he? I looked up from my book as she walked out of the bathroom in her bathrobe with her hair up in a towel. “I need to ask you something,” I said and she turned and looked at me. She walked over and took a seat in the chair next to me. “If I needed to come up with a different plan. Would you follow me?” I could see the confusion on her face.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, I don’t know what’s going on with Logan. I haven’t heard from him in almost three months Mia. I don’t even think he is coming anymore.” I could see the fear on her face. “If I want to get us out of here and run. Would you follow me?” I could see the wheels in her head-turning. The only thing I didn’t know was how she was feeling about Logan lately. She hasn’t really brought him up much. Normally she has questions every day about him.

“Yes, Steven I will follow you. If you would do one thing for me?”

“Help me find my father.” My eyes widened. I wasn’t sure if I could help her find him. Hell, even my father couldn’t find him. “I know about where he is.” I shot my face over to her.

“You do?” She nodded her head at me.

“I mean I don’t have an exact spot, but I know he is hiding in Colorado. In a cabin, I believe that he owns. I can’t know what is actually going on if I don’t find him and question him. I have no idea what he is doing with my mother and siblings.” She took a deep breath. “I don’t even know how I feel about my father anymore. You don’t understand how I have been feeling. My father has always been my rock. He was the most important man in my life. Always had my back and believed in me. Now I just feel betrayed and lost. I need answers, Steven. Answers that only he can give me.”

“I can’t promise you that we will find him, but if we can get out of here and get to a safe place. I will help you find him and get you the answers you deserve.” She smiled and got up and kissed my cheek as she left into her closest. Logan, you have less than a week to show yourself, or I’m taking your girl and running. I said to myself. If Mia was mine, I would have already been here to get her. “Good night Mia.” I hollered as I was leaving her room.

“Wait.” She said and I stopped and turned to look at her.

“Stay with me.” I cocked my head at her.

“We can turn on a movie or something. I’m not too tired at the moment and I don’t want to be alone.” I sighed as she tended to like to make things difficult for me. I don’t know if she knows what she does to me? She owns me and I would give her anything if I could. I closed her door and kicked off my shoes. I laid next to her in the bed. She handed me the remote and the next thing I knew she was fast asleep, with her head in my lap. I laid my head back and closed my eyes. This was going to be the hardest thing I have ever done in my whole life, and I have taken people’s lives.
