Chapter 5

Chapter 5:

Derek tapped his foot as he typed another text. ′Nori! What’s going on? Are you okay?′ Send. Nothing. Nothing for four days. The last time he spoke to her was five days ago when they were looking at the photos of Theo with Aurora.

He’d been having trouble sleeping as all the worst thoughts flew through his head. Two days earlier, he called the L.A.P.D. They wouldn’t do a wellness check, even when he told them she had hypoglycemia and that she could have been passed out.

He opened Facebook. Nori was obsessed with social media. She’d made a Facebook account right after she was put in Foster care as a way to stay in touch with everyone from her old life. He’d never seen her go an entire day without posting a status or at least sharing an article, let alone four days.

He poured himself another cup of coffee and pushed his unwashed hair out of his face, then opened the messenger app on his phone and typed, ′Andrea. It’s been four days since I heard from her. You have to go check on her. I’m really worried. The LAPD wouldn’t do a wellness check two days ago when I called them. Please, I need your help!

Three little dots told him Andrea was typing. His phone made a soft ping. ′I’ll head over in a few. I just got back from Arizona last night. I’m sure she’s fine. Probably just a depression spike after filming ended. But I’ll call you when I get there.

Andrea was the one who set him up with Nori. She was Nori’s best friend and a close friend of his from high school.

Derek waited impatiently. He’d been so distracted in classes. He paced around his room before staring at the same spot he’d been looking for the last four days. He opened his dresser and pulled out the bright blue ring box, the emerald and opal ring looked exactly like he expected. He had been planning on asking her to marry him when he went to see her at Thanksgiving.

What if this was her way of breaking up with him? What if she died? Or got hurt? Nothing but the worst could come to mind.

His phone finally buzzed. He answered. “Andrea? How is she?”

“Dude, she’s not here.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean she’s not here. And her apartment is a mess. I lived with that girl the entirety of college and she would never keep her place looking like this. Should I stay here and wait to see if she comes back?”

“First do me a favor and without touching anything I need you to see if her laptop, phone, and blood sugar meter are there.”

“Okay, give me a moment..” Derek listened to the noises Andrea made looking around. “All gone. It looks like the place has been ransacked. Maybe someone didn’t know what they were looking for.”

“Andrea, this is really important. I need you to call the police.”

“When was the last time you talked to her?”

“Five days ago.”

“What was she doing?”

“She was exhausted and she spent the day resting and applying to jobs and she told me…” Derek trailed off.

“Dude, what did she tell you?” asked Andrea.

“Andrea. I think I know what happened.”

“What?”

“She was going to get lunch with Theo Masterson the day after I spoke to her.”

“Right, she told me she met him on the movie and they became friends,” said Andrea. “She was always in love with him back in college.”

Before Nori started dating Derek, Theo was the object of her affection. Andrea said their dorm was full of posters of the guy.

“I kept joking he was in love with her because he offered to drive her to set for a week and they were hanging out a lot,” replied Derek.

“You don’t think she ran off with him do you? Nori’s not like that. I know she was really into him, but it was just a celebrity crush, not something serious.”

“No, I don’t think she ran off with him. I think he kidnapped her.”

“Why would a famous actor kidnap Nori?”

“Well, do you have any better thoughts? Why would Nori run off with him?” There was a long pause.

Andrea said, “Look, I’ll wait here for a bit to see if she comes back and if she doesn’t come back within the hour I’ll call the police. I’ll call you back when they get here.” He knew she was skeptical, but he was convinced.

“Andrea, we have to find her.”

“Don’t worry. She’s gonna be fine. We’ll find her. I’ll call you later.”

“Talk soon, bye.” The line went dead.

Derek grabbed the pillow off his bed and screamed into it. He started rapidly googling information on Theo. He needed to know what he was up against.

Andrea stood outside Nori’s apartment complex, with her arms crossed, and a frown on her face. She hadn’t come back. An unmarked car pulled up. A tall older gentleman stepped out from the passenger’s side, holding a folder. He was clearly a looker in his youth and gave off a fatherly feel.

Another man, a very attractive one, who was probably only a few years older than Andrea, stepped out of the driver’s side.

The older man walked to Andrea. “Are you…” He opened his folder and looked down, “Are you Andrea Goswin?”

“Yes.”

“Did you call in regards to a missing person’s report?”

“Yes. I did. I called almost two hours ago. What took so long?”

“L.A. traffic,” said the younger man, rather seriously.

“I’m sorry, we came as soon as we could.” said the older man, giving a pointed look at the younger man. “I’m lead detective Albert Spencer and this is my partner Richard Anzo.”

The younger man, Richard nodded and said, “Can you please tell us what’s going on?”

“I think my friend has gone missing.”

“How old is your friend?” asked Albert.

“She’s 23.”

“She’s an adult, she’s allowed to disappear if she wants,” said Albert.

“I’m aware that she’s allowed to go missing if she wants,” sighed Andrea. “But I think there was foul play.”

“Why do you believe that?” asked Richard. He pulled a notepad and pen out of his back pocket and started writing.

“I went to check on her when her boyfriend said he hadn’t heard from her for four days and her apartment has been ransacked. I lived with this girl for years and she is the cleanest person ever.”

“Let’s see the apartment,” said Detective Spencer. Richard grabbed the folder from Albert. Andrea led the detectives down the hall and around the corner to Nori’s apartment, she opened it with her spare key. The two men put on gloves and booties before entering. They took a quick look around.

“Let’s get started on the missing person’s report,” said Detective Spencer. “I’m going to call in CSI.” He walked down the hall and out of sight.

“Do you have a picture of your friend?” asked Richard.

“Yeah, give me a moment.” Andrea went through her phone and pulled up a picture from the summer. She handed the phone to the detective.

“Would you be able to send us some of the pictures of her?”

“Yeah, no problem. I just want my friend to be found safely.”

Richard pulled out a sheet of paper and handed it to Andrea. “Can you fill out this paperwork? It’s just some standard information on her to aid in our investigation.” Andrea grabbed the sheet and leaned it against the wall. She quickly filled out the form and gave it back.

“You said the girl’s boyfriend had you check on her? Why didn’t he check on her himself? Were they fighting?” asked Richard.

“Derek, her boyfriend, lives in New York. I got back into town last night from a film set in Arizona. I’m a makeup artist. He told me that he called for a wellness check two days ago, but the person he spoke to felt it was too soon. When she didn’t answer, again, he asked me to come check on her.”

“Any reason he was so concerned to have a wellness check done after two days?”

“She’s hypoglycemic and Derek was rightfully worried that something had happened. What if she had passed out from low blood sugar and died. People at the LAPD need to take requests like this more seriously.”

“I’ll be sure to pass that information on,” said the young man.

The older Detective came back down the hallway. “CSI is on their way. So, Ms. Goswin, can I get the contact info for Ms...” he looked over Detective Anzo’s shoulder at the missing person’s report, “Ms. O’Connor’s boyfriend.”

“Of course, his name is Derek Prince. Let me just get you his phone number.”

****

Derek was pacing back and forth around his room. Andrea hadn’t called him in a while. A loud buzzing interrupted his thoughts and he jumped towards his bed to answer the phone. “Mr. Prince?”

“Speaking. Who’s this?”

“This is Detective Albert Spencer from the L.A.P.D. I have a missing persons report filed by Ms. Andrea Goswin about Honoria O’Connor. Currently, Ms. Goswin is speaking with another one of my investigators, but she asked me to call you as you were one of the last people to talk to Honoria.”

“Yes, I was. I spoke to her five days ago.”

“And how do you know Ms. O’Connor?”

“Nori’s my girlfriend. We’ve been dating for about three and a half years. But we’re currently long distance. I live in New York City,” said Derek.

“Can you tell me a little bit about what’s been happening in her life?”

“Sure. Nori’s been working on this movie for the last six weeks. Well, I guess closer to nine or ten weeks with all the prep work before filming even started. The last day of filming was six days ago. She got home really late. So I spoke to her the next day.”

“Have you guys been having any problems?” asked Detective Spencer.

“No. Of course not. We spoke all the time. I was even planning to visit her in November for Thanksgiving and we talked about it a little. I assume she was excited.”

“Okay, continue. Ms. Goswin said you had a suspicion about what happened.”

“I do. On the film she befriended the British actor Theo Masterson.”

“One moment, Mr. Prince.” Derek heard the detective whispering to someone. “Okay, continue.”

“So, she became friends with this actor Theo Masterson and Nori often said stuff about him that made me assume Theo had feelings for her.”

“Did you ever speak with Mr. Masterson yourself?”

“No. But he started picking her up for work and they hung out during downtime on set. At first Nori and I treated it as a joke. She was openly a huge fan of his work, but she’d never do anything crazy.”

“And you said you last spoke with her five days ago. What did you talk about?”

“The last time I spoke with her we gossiped about the film, then she told me that Theo was taking her out to lunch before he returned to London. I haven’t heard from her since that day. I don’t even know if she went to lunch with Theo. But I called the L.A.P.D. two days ago to have them do a wellness check and they brushed me off.”

“Do you know what company the film she worked on was?”

“No, but I can get you the contact info for the gaffer. I pay for Nori’s phone and the gaffer, Jake Schwartz, was the one who hired her.”

“That would be helpful.”

“Just give me a moment.” Derek pulled up his phone records from his computer. “Okay, I have his number.”

“I’m ready for the number.”

“It’s 661-555-0256.”

“Copy that. And Mr. Prince? I have one last question.”

“Yes?”

“Where is Ms. O’Connor’s family in all of this? Do you have their contact info?”

“They’re dead. She was orphaned at 14. Andrea and I are the closest thing to family she has.”
