Chapter 14

Melena

With a goofy grin on my face, I watched Conner’s retreating form as he sprinted away towards the chimp enclosure. I had no idea what a code blue meant, but whatever it was, it must have been serious, because the moment he left my side, he practically bolted away in haste.

Quickly grabbing the medical box, I made my way towards the exit and saw that the blonde was busy unlocking the front gate for the first visitors of the day to enter.

“Hi,” I tried to get her attention, but she only huffed in response. “Uh, Conner asked me to leave my number with you, do you perhaps have a pen I could borrow?”

She snapped her head in my direction the second I mentioned Conner’s name and I saw a nasty scowl forming on her face.

“Why?” She quickly retorted while propping her hands on her hips and glaring at me in disgust.

Immediately, my wolf felt threatened and wanted to show this damsel what distress I could dump her in, “I don’t see how that is any of your business,” I replied with equal force.

“Well, then I am sorry, but I can’t help you,” she replied with a fake smile and made her way back into the safety of her glass little cage.

My blood was boiling, and I wanted to sink my fangs into that porcelain, perfect skin of hers.

Trying to reel my anger back in, I took slow, deliberate breaths to calm my wolf and tried to approach her one more time.

“Ok, so can you please give me HIS number then?” I asked while stepping right in front of her window and pulling my phone out.

“I’m sorry, mam, but I am not allowed to give out personal information of our staff to members of the public,” she replied all the while keeping her pearlies on display.

This was pointless.

So much for a night out with my mate.

With a huff of frustration, I turned around to walk away and heard her muffled laugh behind the glass window, obviously at my dispense.

Cow.

Quickening my steps, I slid out of the zoo and practically ran to my Jeep. I managed to slam the door shut behind me just as blood started to fill my mouth from my wolf’s fangs piercing through my gums.

She was pushing fiercely to get out, something I could never allow to happen in public. So, before things could get any worse, I stepped on the gas pedal and fled the area, making my way back to the safety of Feral Grove.

Francesca

Melena came in looking like crap. Seriously, the girl needed to loosen up. I knew she was a doctor and everything, but geez, she was going to burn herself out if she kept this up.

“Ok, whoa Babe, sit!” I ordered and practically shoved her down onto her desk chair, “let me hear it.”

A deep sigh left Melena’s lips and she slumped forward, resting her head in her hands.

I could hear her mumble something into her hands, but since I was not an interpreter of hysterical mumbling, I decided to try something else.

“This calls for the BIG GUNS!” I exclaimed in a comically deep voice, flexing my girly muscles, and running into my room to grab my stash of emergency vodka.

When I came back, Melena was still slumped over.

“Come on, don’t be like that,” I groaned while pouring our first shots, “let me help you.”

She looked up and cocked a brow at me.

“You? Help?” She snorted.

“Hey, what’s that supposed to mean?” I retorted trying to act all touchy-feely.

Melena chuckled, “just give me the shot,” she said while extending her hand towards me.

I handed her the first shot, clinked my glass against hers and we swallowed the clear, bitter liquid away, feeling the burn slide down the backs of our throats.

“Ok, talk,” I ordered while laying back and getting comfortable on her bed.

“So?” She began reluctantly, “you know I have found my mate?”

“Of course, Mr. Human Butt,” I replied nonchalantly.

She eyed me for a second but continued when I wiggled my brows at her playfully.

“So, we spoke today,” she said reluctantly while fidgeting with the empty shot glass in her hands.

Ok, now things were getting interesting. I sat up immediately and urged her to go on by pulling my eyes and mouth wide open with a huge smile taking over my features.

“Stop looking at me like that!” Melena exclaimed.

“What?” I asked, acting overly innocent.

“That excited, knowing face!” She accused, “wipe it off! Right now!”

I laughed and pulled my face into the weirdest, comical expressions I could muster.

“Stop that! Fran!” She yelled.

“What? I am trying to get rid of it! Is it working?” I asked while pulling another, strained face.

Melena was full out laughing now.

Goal number one; make Melena happy again, CHECK.

“Fran! This is serious!” She yelled thought her laughing.

After a while, I stopped my silly antics and laid back down to listen to the rest of her story.

“Do continue, Milady,” I said in an old English accent.

She pulled her eyes into thin lines and pointed her index finger at me in warning.

“As I said, he trapped me in the zoo, and we spoke for a bit.”

“Wait what!? He trapped you!?” I practically bellowed out.

“No, no, it wasn’t weird or anything, actually it was kind of sweet,” she said, and I snorted in response.

Sweet my ass.

“ANYWAYS,” she said loudly, rolling her eyes, “I agreed to go out with him tonight, but was supposed to leave my number for him at the ticket office.”

“But you didn’t?” I butted in.

“No,” she breathed out.

“Because?” I asked, dragging the word out amusingly.

“Because the blonde bimbo at the office wouldn’t let me! She was really rude and almost made Mocha come out!” Melena sounded quite upset and angered, which made me flinch at her sudden outburst.

Mocha was the name she had given to her brown, coffee-colored wolf. If Mocha almost pushed through, it meant that she must have been livid.

“So, he has no way of reaching you?” I asked in confirmation.

“No,” she groaned and leaned into her hands again.

“Well now, lucky for you, I am an expert at making phone calls,” I exclaimed puffing my chest out dramatically.

Melena rolled her eyes at me again.

“Just you wait, Fair Maiden, Fran to the rescue!” I pronounced confidently while pulling my phone out of my back pocket.

Suddenly, Melena’s eyes grew wide as she stared at my phone.

“NO! Fran!” She yelled while jumping up and trying to grab the phone out of my hand, “don’t you dare!”

I pulled the phone away swiftly and we lost our balance, falling onto the rug with a muffled thud.

She was trying to pry the phone from my hands as I struggled to get out of her grip. Finally, I managed to push away from her and leopard-crawled forward with her still pulling and tugging on my legs.

“Don’t Fran, you are only going to make it worse!” She yelled while I was quickly searching for Lion Heart’s number online.

“Someday you are going to thank me for this!” I yelled back while pressing the green call button and pressing the phone to my ear.
