Chapter 15

“Fran! No!” I yelled again, but it was too late.

“Hi, who is this?” I heard her saying and I practically died inside.

I didn’t have a clue what she was up to, but knowing her, it couldn’t have been anything good.

“Rachel,” Fran said while eyeing me seriously.

I was shaking my head, trying to get her to back off before things took a turn for the worst.

“What time does the park close?” She asked in a sugary sweet voice. “17h00? Ok, great. Thanks, Blonde Bimbo,” Fran said and hanged up.

My mouth fell open and I stared at her in disbelief.

“Seriously!? Blonde Bimbo?” I asked as soon as she threw her phone casually onto the bed and sat back up.

“What?” She asked innocently with a shrug, “I got your back.”

“Excuse me, you what now?”

Fran snorted, “please, she doesn’t even know who it was.”

“Real mature,” I mumbled while shaking my head.

“I heard that!” She snapped.

“I know, that was the plan,” I replied sarcastically and we both fell onto my bed and stared at the ceiling.

Lost in our own thoughts we laid there in silence for a few minutes.

“So, what now?” I finally asked with a sigh.

“Now, my dear friend, we dress up!” She exclaimed while pointing her index finger dramatically into the air.

“Dress up?”

“Yes, we are going out!” She pronounced and jumped off the bed.

The rest of the day felt like a blur. The only thing on my mind was the fact I was going on a date with the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.

I was thrilled that I had finally made it through Melena’s stubborn walls and got her to agree to go on a date with me, although I was not exactly sure whether she knew it was a date or not.

Suddenly, the loud, obnoxious voice of my coworker, Louis, jerked me out of my daze, “Dude, what is up with you? You have that weird goofy look on your face again,” he said while throwing a piece of cut fruit at my head.

The fruit hit my temple and splashed juice all over the left side of my face.

He was snickering triumphantly, while I wiped the sticky sweetness from my skin with the back of my arm.

The goofy grin was still there.

“Man, you are so whipped!” Louis said with a slight whistle at the end and shook his head playfully.

I did not want to admit it, but it was true. I was whipped and I was absolutely loving it!

“Is it the Raven girl you ditched us for this morning?” He asked while cutting into another large pumpkin.

We were helping to prepare the primates’ food parcels for the evening since we were a bit short-staffed at the moment.

“Raven? Did I call her that?” I asked a bit confused.

“Yeah, well, that was the name you yelled out when you bolted after her this morning,” he said with a shrug.

Damn, I hadn’t even realized I did that. I wonder if she heard.

“I-uh, yes, it’s her, but that’s not her name,” I replied a bit reluctantly.

“Oh-well then it’s no wonder she tried to get away from you,” Louis laughed out boisterously.

I pulled my brows together into a frown and sliced into a bright green cucumber.

“Dude, rule number one, never mix up your ladies’ names,” he said while patting me playfully on the shoulder.

I pulled away and grumbled, “it wasn’t like that.”

“Yeah, sure,” he snorted while throwing the chunks of pumpkin into a large box at the end of the table.

“Speaking of which, will you dump this? I still have a few rounds to make before heading home,” I asked gesturing towards the boxes of cut fruit.

Louis nodded and waved me off with a knowing smile. As I wiped my hands to leave, he plugged his earphones in and started to hum along to a song. I grabbed a few slices of bread for Rosie, the female giraffe who would be waiting for me on my way out towards the herpetology office.

“Hey Rachel, did a girl leave a note for me today?” I asked cheerfully as I headed into the back of the ticket office to prop my radio into his charging station for the night and sign myself out.

“You mean the girl you are cheating on me with?” She bit back angrily.

Instantly my blood turned cold, “wait, what?” I asked utterly stunned, turning to give her my full attention.

She was standing with her hands on her hips, looking deadly. The atmosphere was thick and uncomfortable.

“Rachel-I,” I began, but she cut me off midsentence.

“Don’t you dare, Conner White!” She yelled while pointing her index finger at me accusingly.

I drew my brows up and stared at her wide-eyed. Just then, Louis came strolling into the back of the office.

Louis glanced at Rachel swiftly but instantly did a doubletake as he took in her wild, irritated appearance, “WHOA!” He exclaimed loudly and put his hands up in surrender. “Conner, did you get her name wrong also?” He joked, unaware of the intensity of the situation.

There and then, something snapped inside Rachel and she hurled a coffee mug forcefully at us. Both me and Louis jumped to the side as the mug crashed violently into the wall behind us, shattering into a million pieces.

Louis flicked his eyes back to me and all I could see was shock written in them. A second later another unidentified item came flying through the air, heading straight for us.

“Shit!” I heard Louis curse as he grabbed my arm and jerked me out of the office, slamming the door shut behind us.

We were both at a loss for words as we stood outside, staring at the door, hoping that she would not rip it open and come charging out after us.

After a few seconds, Louis turned his gaze towards me and started laughing.

“She got you!” He yelled through his hysterical laughter and pointed to the top left corner of my face, just below the hairline.

I lifted my hand to inspect and flinched when my fingers made contact with the sticky, tender gash in my head.

Blood was covering my fingertips and I groaned in frustration as we started making our way towards the exit.

Well, so much for my date.

I never even considered that Rachel was under the impression we were in a relationship. Sure, we hang out a lot, but we never kissed or anything.

My mood had changed so abruptly, it felt like my head was spinning.

What should I do now? I obviously wasn’t getting Melena’s number any time soon and my friendship with Rachel seemed pretty unstable if I could even call it that.

I sighed in defeat as I stepped into the rotating doors.
