Chapter 29

I would say that the luncheon went pretty well after Melena and I had cleared the air and came to a mutual agreement to take things slow and see how it played out.

Neither of us wanted to complicate things more than what was necessary, and we wanted things to happen naturally and not feel forced.

At some point, after Fran and Anthony had returned, all three of them went quiet and I saw their eyes glaze over. It stayed like that for a while before they all came back to reality.

Fran’s eyes lit up in excitement immediately and she grabbed Melena, who had been sitting next to her by the shoulders, “we are definitely going!” She almost yelled out.

Melena looked a little uncertain and quickly flicked her beautiful blue orbs towards me. She scanned my face for a second, looking for something and then finally let me in on what was happening.

“Alpha just mind-linked the entire pack and invited everyone to his youngest son, Dylan’s nineteenth birthday party,” she said looking doubtful of how I might react.

“Oh, ok, that is nice of him. When is it?”

“TONIGHT!” Fran shrieked and clapped her hands together in excitement. Anthony merely shook his head at her antics and grinned like a Cheshire cat.

I turned my attention back to Melena and saw that she was looking at me expectantly. I didn’t know what to say because I wasn’t completely sure whether I was invited too, or if she was asking for my permission to go without me.

“Would you like to go?” She asked shyly while pulling a strand of her shiny black hair behind her ear.

I took a moment to go through my mental schedule for the following day, and for a second I wondered whether I should just ‘stay sick’ for another day since that was the lie, I had told my employer this morning in order to sleep yesterday’s events and drugs off.

“Well, of course, he is going!” Fran interjected my train of thoughts with her vibrant energy, “he is part of the pack now.”

Anthony flicked his eyes towards me and so did Mel. They waited anxiously for my reaction to Fran’s words, but I didn’t let her get to me and kept my composure.

“I am not part of the pack, Fran,” I replied emotionlessly and turned to face Melena, “but if you would like me to accompany you, I will gladly do it,” I said to her and saw her breathe a breath of relief.

My focus was on Melena, but I didn’t miss Fran’s snort and heard her mumbling something n the line of, “not yet anyway.”

Mel ignored her obnoxious friend and smiled brightly, “that would be nice, thank you.”

I nodded and took a sip of cola without making eye contact with Fran.

When we arrived at the club that evening, most of the pack was already there having a good time. The music was pumping, and an array of colourful lights flashed wildly to the beat of the lively rhythm.

Bodies were taking up pretty much every inch of the dancefloor and tables lined the walls filled with youngsters drinking, laughing and having a good time.

As we stood at the entrance, the smell of smoke and booze hit me like a storm, and I felt my heart starting to beat faster. The atmosphere was contagious and took hold of me instantly.

I turned to face Conner and found him staring at the scene in front of him in wonder. Effortlessly, I interlaced our fingers, gave him a quick peck on the cheek and pulled him into the energetic room with me. Fran and Anthony were already dancing and jumping around on the dancefloor, which was typical of Fran since she was a total party animal.

Once we reached the dancefloor, I started moving my body to the intoxicating melody and coaxed Conner to join in. He hesitated for a second and shook his head, but I didn’t take no for an answer. Teasingly, I started dancing around him, trying to persuade him to join me. After a while, he gave me a smouldering shy smile and I knew that I had won.

He snaked his strong hands around my waist, and I guided him into our first dance. It wasn’t romantic like in a soppy movie, but it was fun and carefree. To sum it up, it was amazing. Everyone seemed truly happy and for just one night, nothing else mattered. Not the vampires, not the pressure of mating, and especially not the idea of getting rejected.

Anthony jammed it out like a champ and came up with the strangest dance moves I have ever seen. It entertained us very much and we couldn't stop laughing. People stopped and stared in excitement, some even tried to copy him but they were no match for his expertise. He didn’t look goofy or embarrassing at all and it actually suited him quite well. By the end of the fourth song, we were doubled over and clutching our stomachs in laughter.

Tears of joy, from way too much laughing, were rolling down Fran’s cheeks as we left the dancefloor to look for an empty table.

The happiness on Conner’s face and excitement in his eyes filled me to the brim with joy. Things have been a bit bumpy for us, but tonight it felt like all our worries had disappeared, and I loved breathing what felt like a breath of fresh air for the first time in days.

“Melena,” I heard someone calling out as we reached an empty table and I turned to come face to face with Marcus.

“Hi Marc,” I replied still smiling brightly.

“You look amazing!” He exclaimed as he practically pulled me out of Conner’s grasp and enclosed me in a tight bearhug.

It felt a bit strange since he was not normally so touchy, but I didn’t pay much attention to it. Nothing was going to spoil my special evening with Conner.

As Conner stepped up to my side, he slid his arm possessively around my waist and greeted Marcus with a brief handshake.

“That is a beautiful necklace, Doc,” Marcus complimented with his eyes lingering dangerously low over my necklace. I wasn’t entirely sure if he was staring at the piece of jewellery or at my slightly exposed breasts, but I felt Conner’s fingers digging into my skin, as I thanked Marcus for the compliment.

“May I have this dance?” He asked, throwing me completely off guard. Wait, what?

I was so surprised; I didn’t know what to say and without waiting for my answer, he reached out to gently grab my hand. Before I knew what was happening, he was pulling me away from Conner and onto the dancefloor.

I looked back swiftly and saw Conner looking livid.
