Chapter 41

Alpha Julian and Otis looked startled by my sudden change of mind, but they didn’t judge me. Somehow, without saying a single word I knew they understood. Both of them had their own mates and both of them knew the strong feelings connected to the mate bond which compelled us into doing extraordinary things for the ones we loved.

And right then and there, I felt the harsh reality of slowly losing grip on my precious new mate, before I had even gotten the chance to fully experience her love. It was as if my world was falling apart by the second and there was nothing I could do to stop it, well, nothing if I was stuck in human form. I needed to change in order to be a better match for Melena and to be able to fit into her world.

“What the hell happened?” Otis asked Alpha Julian while he helped me back onto the chair. I felt like death itself and kept my hand firmly pressed to my chest as I got back up.

“Just give me another second,” Alpha replied, and I watched as his eyes glazed over.

He shook his head and his face contorted once again in both anger and frustration.

“Where the hell is my damn phone!?” He hollered soon after his eyes returned back to their normal state.

I heard feet scurrying about in the hall and saw a vein popping out angrily on the Alpha’s forehead.

“Why would you need a phone? Just mind-link her,” I said and saw him shake his head once again.

“Can’t, my mind-links are not going through to Melena and Marcus isn’t answering either.”

My leg started jumping anxiously and once again I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat.

When I woke up, I was still lying on the cold hard floor of Malice Creek’s guest room. There were a few wolves surrounding me and as my eyes fluttered open, I saw multiple faces light up in relief.

“She’s alright!” One of the she-wolves yelled over her shoulder before turning her attention back to me, “Mam, can you hear me?” she asked while gently placing a damp towel on my forehead.

I groaned in response and clamped my eyes shut, trying to block the bright lights out that was shining from above. A few of the wolves, including the she-wolf, quickly helped me to sit up and as I came into an upright position, multiple erotic images of Maxwell flashed into my mind and I felt bile pushing up in the back of my throat.

“Give her some room!” The young she-wolf yelled and gestured for some of the others to move away. She then proceeded to grab the tiny dustbin sitting just off to her right and placed it into my lap, “here, you look like you are going to be sick.”

I nodded thankfully at her but couldn’t manage to speak just yet. I closed my eyes again and tried to picture Conner instead of Maxwell. As soon as I did, I felt a bit better and was able to open my eyes back up.

“I need a phone,” I managed to finally rasp out and the she-wolf ordered one of the other wolves to bring one in immediately.

I wasn’t sure who she was, but judging by the way she handled herself, it was pretty clear that she must have been the Alpha’s daughter.

“Where is Marcus?”

“They had to restrain him, he was very aggressive and out of control, almost killed Maxwell.”

As she mentioned Maxwell’s name, images of him came flashing back into my mind and my stomach contracted painfully, forcing the last bit of its contents out into the dustbin sitting on my lap.

The young she-wolf’s eyes softened as she gazed at me and she put her hand tenderly on my back, rubbing it in a comforting manner, “please don’t mention his name again,” I rasped out and saw her nod in understanding.

“I’m sorry.”

“The phone?” I asked again and she handed it to me swiftly.

As if second nature, I punched in the packhouse’s number and Otis picked up within the first ring.

“Otis?” I asked in reply.

“It’s her, she’s on the phone,” I heard him saying loudly, followed by frantic scrambling in the background.

My heart clenched violently at the sudden new, familiar voice speaking into the receiver.

“Conner,” I managed to say before bursting into tears. I held the phone pressed tightly to my ear as I started shaking and sobbing uncontrollably.

“Mel, I’m here, are you alright?” I heard him asking and felt my heart breaking all over again.

“Conner, I,” I started to say through my tears, but I stammered and couldn’t seem to string a single sentence together.

“I just need to know if you are ok?” He asked again sounding very concerned.

“I, I’m ok, but,” I tried again, but he cut me off.

“Oh, thank goodness,” he breathed out, “I felt you leaving me?”

“I, I am so sorry, Conner, something happened and I,” he cut me off again.

“Do you still love me?”

“Yes,” I breathed out, “with all my heart.”

“Then stay put, I will come and get you,” he replied, and I felt my heart heal a tiny bit.

“Conner, the Beta claimed me,” I blurted out through a new set of tears.

“Do you love him?” He asked, sounding a bit unsure of himself.

“I love YOU!” I quickly replied with all the confidence in the world.

“Then you belong to me,” he stated with a hint of possessiveness, “he will pay for what he did!”

“He already did, Marcus kind of lost it and almost beat him into a pulp.”

“Then I will come to finish the job,” he stated angrily, and I cringed at the thought.

Even though Conner was my mate, I couldn’t help the new feelings starting to develop because of the new link forming with Maxwell. The mark he had left on my neck was playing tricks on me and forcing me to warm up to him slowly. I didn’t want that; I only wanted Conner and knew that I had to get out of here as soon as I possibly could before things started to escalate out of control.

The other problem was that Conner was human and that he wouldn’t be able to replace Maxwell’s mark with his own to sever the link. At the thought of that harsh reality, my stomach contracted violently again, and I doubled over clutching the bin to my face and dropping the phone to the ground.

“Mel? MEL!?” I heard his voice yelling from the phone and I picked it up hastily, “I am going to change!” I heard him say and my limbs suddenly felt numb.

“Conner, no!”

“I have already decided, you need me, and I need you, it is the only way.”

“But it might kill you!” I cried out in agony.

“I’m strong, I can do it,” he replied confidently but I didn’t feel comforted by his words at all.

“No, please Conner, please promise me you will not do anything until I get back?” I was begging him with tears streaming down my face, but I was desperate, desperate to keep the man I loved alive.

“Conner, please!” I begged, not caring who was watching me break. All I cared about was him.

“Melena?” It was Alpha Julian’s voice.

“Alpha! Please, don’t kill my mate, please!” I begged. I felt so utterly helpless and lost, “we can return right now, just please, don’t try to turn him yet, I want to see him at least one more time.”

“I have sent Otis and a few warriors to come and escort you and Marcus back home, stay put and don’t do anything stupid.”

After that, the phone went dead and I found myself staring at it in bewilderment.

My eyes flicked up towards the young she-wolf watching me with eyes as big as saucers and without any control over my emotions, I clamped both my hands over my mouth and sobbed into them in a mess of hysteria.

“EVERYBODY OUT!” She ordered with authority and they cleared the room within an instant, leaving only the two of us sitting on the floor.
