Chapter 46

Conner

For the first time in years, I felt free, truly free like a child that knew no limits.

When the wolf had entered me, it was excruciating. Painful does not even begin to describe what I had been through and most importantly what I had survived. Now, I was as much a part of him as he was of me and we seemed to get along quite well. I guess it might have helped that I had been working with these magnificent animals for years and I knew their behaviour and smell by heart.

Speaking of smell, whoa! Have I been kept in a word of faint, almost nonexistent smells all my life? It was as if I had been walking around with cotton balls shoved up my nose for as long as I could remember. Well, that is compared to what I was experiencing now. Everything around me smelled differently, even the people had their own unique smells. It was amazing! A little overwhelming at first, but truly a gift.

It wasn’t just my sense of smell that had increased, but also my hearing and eyesight had pretty much doubled in functionality overnight. The wolf inside of me was strong and wild. He made me feel like I could take on an army, which was just what I needed if I wanted to keep my precious mate out of harm’s way.

I must say, despite all the wonderful qualities my wolf had, he was also very unpredictable and did whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted. I wasn’t sure if everyone’s wolves acted that way and if they were struggling to gain control of their beasts also, but mine was definitely a challenge. A real rebel.

I had spent most of the night getting to know my wolf and learning how to work together as a team. After hours of his crazy shenanigans, he finally gave back control and I was able to shift back into my human form. Alpha Julian has assigned a bachelor’s flat for me in the packhouse not too far away from Anthony’s and I was very grateful to be able to take a shower and brush my teeth after everything my wolf had done out there in the woods.

Well, done and ate.

“Conner?” I heard Anthony’s voice coming from right outside my door the following morning, “are you awake?”

“Come in!” I called as I stepped out of my tiny bathroom after the third shower I had taken that morning alone.

When he saw me step out with a towel still wrapped around my waist, he shook his head and chuckled, “yeah, I would have done that too.”

I knew he was revering to all the nasty stuff my wolf had crawled into and rolled in last night, but I didn’t mind, he was happy and so was I for having found him.

“Your wolf is quite, uh? How should I put this?” he sat down at my kitchen counter mulling on the right words to say, “different.”

I chuckled at his lack for a better word but knew exactly what he meant. It didn’t offend me at all, and I loved my wolf already.

“Thanks for standing by me,” I finally said, in a more serious tone and he nodded in return.

A silence fell between us after that as both of us thought back to last night’s events and how horrible it had been at the beginning of the transformation.

“I am very glad you made it,” Anthony finally said and smiled at me with a genuine smile of relief.

“Yeah, me too.”

“Anyway, Alpha sent me to come and fetch you, we are heading out.”

I scrunched my brows together and stared at him in confusion for a few seconds, “heading out?”

“Yeah,” he replied with a sigh, “but before I tell you, don’t get upset ok? Everything has been sorted out and is fine now!”

Despite his warning, I still felt my insides going cold.

“What happened? Is my mate ok?” I blurted out in concern.

“She is fine, Fran is with her at the moment. They were attacked last night.”

As he said that, I felt my heart stop, “Melena was attacked?”

“Well, the whole of Malice Creek, actually,” he explained, “we are heading out to help them regroup and clear out the forest of vampires, after which we will accompany our fellow pack members back home.”

I nodded longer than necessary after he was done explaining. So many thoughts were mulling through my mind, one of which was that my mate had been in the face of danger yet again without me being there to protect her. My wolf felt the same way and pushed his strength and determination into my system. He was right. We made a good team, and we would make sure no one ever harms our beautiful Raven ever again.

“Good, let’s go!” I stated firmly and walked out of the flat with long, determined strides.

“Wait, bro, your clothes!” I heard Anthony yelling after me and I had to go back and get dressed first.

Stupid clothes!

Melena

When I woke up, Fran was sitting by my side in what looked like an infirmary bed. It felt very strange to be the one in the bed for a change since I usually was the one who stood beside the bed and did all the dirty work.

“Babe!” she yelled excitedly as soon as she saw my eyes flutter open, “you’re awake!”

She was laughing and smiling in pure bliss, which was very contagious and infected me immediately. We were both laughing and hugging like we haven’t seen each other in years, overjoyed to be reunited again.

“Fran, I, I did something!” I blurted out as she pulled away from me after our joyous hug.

“I know, we heard,” she simply answered.

“Is, is Conner ok?” I asked reluctantly, “did he leave?”

She shook her head and smiled as she looked down at me, “on the contrary,” she said with a strange twinkle in her eyes.

“NO!?”

She nodded.

“Did he survive!? IS CONNER ALIVE!?” I felt my world closing in on me and suddenly my chest felt extremely tight, and I struggled to breathe.

“Babe! Calm down, Anthony linked me early this morning, he made it.”

“Oh, thank goodness,” I breathed out as tears of joy started to trickle down my face.

Fran smiled warmly at me and helped me to wipe the happy tears away.

I couldn’t believe it, not only did my mate still want to be with me, but he had gone through the transformation and survived. I didn’t know what to say, but I felt very unworthy of such an amazing man, not that I would give him up for anything in the world.

“Oh, and one more thing,” Fran said, sounding serious, “he is on his way here, like, right now.”

My brows shot up, “here? To Malice Creek?”

“Yip,” she replied popping the ‘p’ at the end.

“Malice Creek, where Maxwell is currently residing at?”

“Yip.”
