Chapter fourteen: Schatten

"I find it quite peculiar how the shadow purloined my powers, wanting to set free all souls and demons, wanting to destroy royalty, Cory has escaped somehow and this mysterious person impersonates as a guard," Mason mumbles to himself as he types away at his computer.

A knock pounded on the door, notifying him.

"Come in."

The door inches open to Megan peaking her head around the corner. "Mason?"

He lifted his head slightly. He gestured his head to sit int eh chair in front of his desk. She walked in closing the door and swiftly walked to the chair.

"Whatcha doing?"

"Searching about these shadow figures. It bothers me how these shadow figures know who we are and what we do."

"That sucks."

He hummed. Megan glances around his desk finding papers upon papers of notes. "What's with the notes?"

"About everything I know from the research."

"Damn," Megan picked a few papers to read them.

Shadow figures, more commonly known as Schatten, hide in the dark where no one suspects them. They can kill anyone as they choose. Although the Schatten are figures, people will be able to see them, blending into the crowds unsuspectingly. They aren't alive but they aren't dead either.

She moved onto another piece of paper.

Schattens are able to shape shift into any form when they are able to suck out the soul of a living thing. Their greatest strength is the powerful humans. The more powerful the person is, the more they suck out and become powerful themselves. With their power, the Schatten will do a lot to over power the weaker race; kill, enslave, and feed off of them.

"Interesting," she mumbled. Mason is writing away on a piece of paper. "Don't tell me that all of this research is for the Schatten things."

"No, it's all about the Schatten, Cory's backstory, and all of the shit that has happened and the possibilities of how it occurred."

"That's a lot of information."

"It is. I need all the information I can get."

"What for?"

"So I know how to defeat them and get my powers back."

"Ah."

All they heard is the computer keys being pressed furiously.

"So . . . I heard your becoming King in a few months."

"Yeah."

"That's nice, isn't it?"

"Not really."

Megan sat up straighter in the chair stunned. "Why 'not really?!' Your becoming king for fucks sakes! That's incredible! You get every riches and privileges!"

"Being king doesn't get you every riches and privileges. Being king has its responsibilities, you know."

"Like what? This is Hell."

"Yeah, but I still have to take care of my subjects and torture them when needed." Mason has now sat back crossing his arms over his chest. "I still have to make sure everything is under control."

"Oh . . . Okay your highness." He rolls his eyes.

"I'm not king yet, but when I am, none of this 'oh you must give me respect,' or 'I am special and you all need to respect me,' or 'I know the king personally so you must give me respect.'" Mason mustered the girliest voice he could.

"I don't sound like that!"

"Mmhm, sure."

"I am offended!"

Mason chuckles at her childish behaviour. "Good, be offended. I don't care."

"You are so cruel!"

"Good."

"Why is that good?!"

"Because I don't want to be the good guy. I'm Satan's son after all."

"You we're good to that Auggie kid."

"Yes, well they know to stay on my good side."

They sat in silence.

"Mason?"

"Yeah."

"What if . . . What if you don't destroy the Schatten? What if the royals do die out? What if the world-"

"Okay, that is enough. I will find this Schatten and destroy it. Destroy all of the Schattens if I need to. There's no 'what ifs.'"

"Okay. I'm just . . . worried that . . . nevermind."

"I'm starting to think you're doubting me."

"I'm not doubting you! No way! Not at all!" she chuckles nervously scratching the back of her neck. Mason stares at her as he's trying to figure her out.

"Mhm, sure."

Megan sinks into the chair embarrassed while Mason shakes his head.

"Megan, I'd start watching what you say if I were you. I can become dangerous."

"How dangerous?" She asks in a flirting tone leaning on the desk with a smirk.

"Extremely."

He leaned in as well, their noses inches from touching.

"Well I'd love to see you get dangerous. It would be hot."

He smirked. "Well I'm warning you now, I don't think you'd want to see me in my dark form. Everyone is terrified of me."

"Mhmm. Honey I never get scared."

"Believe me darling you will."

"Bet."

"You wanna bet?"

"Of course."

"Fine then. But the second you get scared, it's over for you."

She smirks. "We'll see about that."

"Anyways, should I continue with the research? Several lives are endangered."

"Of course Mason. I shall help you get the job done."
