Chapter seventeen: memories
He smiles at the little family wishing he could go back in time and stop the accident from happening. Wishing they'd be together for their whole life instead of temporarily.
"Why're you stalking them?" Megan asks as she stands beside him.
"I'm not stalking them."
"Well you certainly aren't giving them privacy."
He rolls his eyes.
"Don't you roll your eyes at me?"
"Well it doesn't matter now does it."
"Why are you here? Aren't you suppose to be getting ready for your date?"
"I am ready for my date." He glances at her looking her up and down. She's wearing a white long sleeve shirt that reveals her shoulders and flutters out like a dress at the bottoms. Black jeans that fits perfectly around her legs and black and white striped heels. Small white earrings sparkle in the light. Along with her outfit, a white purse with purple designs of flowers that goes well with her outfit.
Her make up is done simple as well. Concealer, with red lipstick and mascara.
"When's your date?"
"I don't know why you went for Darren, he's an asshole. Could break your heart in seconds."
"Well he's hot, and I doubt he is. I talked to him and he seems like a very nice guy."
"Okay then. Don't come crying to me when he breaks your heart."
"Please, like I'd ever come crying to you."
"Anyway, I've got to get going."
"Where're you guys going?"
"He's going to take me to the town. I didn't know there was one down here."
"Yeah there is. It's less known for the souls whom we don't really care about."
"Oh so you send me to the rocks but not to the town where I could live with someone?"
"Yeah well you didn't want to listen to us. I couldn't send you away knowing you'd annoy everyone."
"Shouldn't you be going?"
"Yes, yes. See you later."
She walked off while Mason could only think of scenarios where the date could go wrong. Shaking his head he continued to watch the family before him. He left them alone heading towards his office.
Mason needed to do work on the newbies. He's got a lot of toughening up to do with them or they'll never get anywhere.
Sitting at his desk he started the paper work that needed to be done.
As Mason worked on the papers, Charlie barged into the room distressed and Mason looked up at him.
"What happened to you?"
"The mortals that's what! I swear they're trying to mess with me!"
"Well being a lingering spirit that's your job is to deal with the mortals."
"I know but it gets annoying how they nag at you with these questions and whatnot. Then they start asking about romance. How the fuck am I suppose to answer when I haven't been in a relationship?"
"Exactly! At this point I gave them fake information because why the fuck not."
"You know you're not suppose to do that, right?"
"I know. But I've been doing this for centuries. Hey, I even get those odd mortals who don't believe and think it's a trick. C'mon what more could I do to prove that I am real?!"
Mason chuckles at his friend. "Charlie, Charlie, Charlie. My dear friend you make me laugh."
"Haha very funny. You're lucky that you teach these spirits instead of doing the job."
"Yeah that's why I chose this job instead of that," he points and waves with his pointer finger at Charlie, talking about his job.
Mason smirked at his friend knowing he's got the better job. "I only did it to get my revenge, now I'm a paranormal game that's so over rated." Charlie finally sat on the chair in front of Mason's desk.
"By the way, I went into town to grab some beer when I saw Megan and Darren. Why the fuck is she with him?"
"They're on a date. She finds him hot. Her words not mine."
"Damn, she's in for it."
"I know. I already warned her but I told her to not to come crying to me when he breaks her heart."
"Now why would you warn her?"
"Because I thought she'd listen to me. Turns out I'm wrong. I'm not helping her when she gets her heartbroken. I won't be surprised if this date goes wrong."
"I won't be surprised either. I'll be more shocked if they actually make it."
"Do . . . Do you think they're gonna make it?" Charlie asked fiddling with a pen he found on the desk.
"I'm not sure. I can't make that call."
"Honestly, I'm kind of rooting for them. I wanna see how long they can last."
"Well go right ahead. I'm just here to make sure things are in order."
"And that's why I admire you Mason."
"When your king, Mason, everyone will be bowing down."
"Hope so or-" he made a gesture with his pointer finger crossing his neck. "No chances, no nothing."
"Now that's my boy!" Charlie smiled in achievement. He's so proud of what Mason is becoming. He's about to rule a whole kingdom and he's so proud of him.
"You know . . . It seems like yesterday you were running around in diapers with the laugh you had."
"I can't remember that."
"Of course not but I do." Charlie sighs smiling at the memory. "Good times."
"Remember the time when my mom came home to me eating a whole chocolate cake?"
"Oh yeah, she was livid and had sent you to me to take care of you. You were fucking seven and had eaten a whole cake. I could barely eat a piece without vomiting."
"To this day I still don't know how I did it. Thinking of it makes me sick."
"Oh and remember when you were ten trying to reenact your father as king? You were giving orders to everyone and Robert was sitting on his throne laughing hysterically."
"Oh yes. Then it was fun and games and now this is real."
"I know, but I know you'll rock it."
"Hope so." Mason gazes downwards avoiding eye contact. Charlie quickly thinks of another memory to take his mind off things.
"I remember the first day I held you. You were so tiny and wrestles. You kept wriggling in my arms as I cradled you making sure that nothing happened to you. I remember that day that both of your parents asked me to be your uncle and I agreed with no hesitations. I promised to put your life first no matter what cost my soul. I remember that I'd held you when you cried, played with you with whatever was there. I was, am, and will continue to be your uncle and your very close friend. I always believed in you and continue to. Mason, you're the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. I've always been there when you spoke your first word, took your first step, your first birthday, the first day of kindergarten, and everything else. And now, I'll be there for when you become king."
"Charlie . . ."
"Look, the reason I told you that is because no matter what, if you need someone or someone to talk to, I'm here. I'll always be here."
"Of course, anything for you. Anyways I think you should take the time off for a few hours and spend time with yourself. Collect your thoughts. Maybe head into town for a bit, get some beer or something."
"Hey, you need it."
"No prob. Anyways I better get going, feel myself being tugged. Gotta deal with these fucking mortals."
"You have fun with that."
Charlie disappeared and Mason thought over of what he said. Packing up he decided to go into town to let himself loose.
