Chapter twenty four: feelings

"Mason?" Megan shakes him awake.

"What?" he grumbles.

"I can't sleep."

"That sucks. Get back to bed."

Megan climbs into his bed shaking him awake. "What Megan?"

"I can't sleep."

"So? You woke me up because you can't sleep? What the fuck do you want me to do about it?"

"I don't know."

"Just lay in bed and you'll fall asleep eventually."

"I tried that and I still can't go to sleep." Megan climbs on top of Mason so she's straddling him. She rests her hands on his chest and shakes him furiously.

"Mason."

"What?!" he woke up glaring at her. "I can't help you that you can't sleep."

"I know you can't. That's why I was curious if I could . . . if I could sleep with you tonight?"

"No."

"Mason please."

"No."

"Mason. Please. I'll leave you alone afterwards."

He sighs grumbling inaudible words. "Fine, but just for tonight."

"Thank you," Megan squeaked, hugging him.

"Okay, who are you and what have you done with Megan?"

She giggles. "I'm still me, Mason. Just . . ."

"You better be sleeping or I'll kick you to your bed."

"Yes sir." Megan tucks herself underneath the blankets while Mason falls back to sleep. Megan lays in bed tossing and turning but couldn't get to sleep. Without thinking, she wraps her arms around Mason when he stiffens.

"What are you doing?"

"I don't know."

He turns the lamp on and turns over to face Megan. "Is everything okay?"

She gazes downwards. "No."

"What's wrong?"

"Everything."

"Well that doesn't explain anything."

She sighs. "It's about my parents."

"What about them?"

Megan sighs, ready to explain herself. "When I see Ryder's parents and the way they love him so much. They shower him with so much love that . . . I feel jealous in a way. Not jealous because they love each other, but jealous . . . jealous that my parents never loved me in that way. They were always so busy for me that I grew up alone. I had a nanny to take care of me when I was young but that didn't last very long as I wanted attention from my parents. Even your father shows love to you in a way that you both understand. I never got any of that. I just had the money to make me happy, which it didn't by the way. Soon my nanny left and I was all alone. The house to myself so I started to become independent and cruel to everyone at school. They all had parents that loved them while I had no one. I made "friends" to keep my company. I even got a boyfriend but I never loved them, or cared for them. No one showed me how. So mentally, I was all alone. No one knew my struggle but I didn't bother to tell them. I was a popular girl at school but I knew no one liked me because of my awful attitude towards them. I didn't care though."

"Well that explains everything."

"What do you mean?"

"Your bratty behaviour."

"Thanks."

"So what made you change?"

"You guys. You guys made me change my behaviour. The way y'all cared for each other, even if you don't show it."

"We're all friends and family here."

"Exactly. I don't know if I invited myself in or you did unintentionally though I felt like I belonged. Even if you guys didn't like me at the start."

Mason didn't say anything, he just nodded and listened.

"I felt myself change and I'm happy about it. I just wish that I changed before I died." Megan went silent.

"Hey," Mason started resting his hand on her arm. "You deserve to be here with us and not with them. Your parents shaped who you were. They didn't deserve you. You deserve better."

She nods. "Who you were then doesn't matter now. It's all in the past. Focus on the present and don't let the past keep you down. You are a strong woman. We both know that."

"Okay."

Megan moves closely to Mason getting comfortable. Their noses inches from each other. "Thank you," she whispers.

"For what?"

"Everything."

A small smile appears on Mason. "You're welcome."

Mason leans in a bit more where the tip of their noses are touching. Megan leans in further, ready to connect their lips when a knock interrupts them. Jolting back, they look in the direction of the door. "Did you call someone?" Mason asks.

"No."

The knock sounded again. Megan separates from him as Mason reaches down to put his pants on to investigate. "Where are you going?"

"To investigate."

"Have you not seen a horror movie? Investigating is what gets you killed."

"I'm a devil. I can protect myself."

"Last time I checked you are fucking powerless."

Megan heard the door open when she got up to check. "Who's there?'

"No one but this." Mason closes and locks the door, turns around and shows her a note.

"What does it say?"

"Welcome back Mason," he reads. He looks up with confusion written all over his face.

"What does it mean?"

"I don't know, but something isn't right. I have a feeling of who it could be."

"Who?"

"I wasn't positive to begin with but I figured a Schatten followed us through the time machine."

"What do you mean?"

"I don't know and I can't explain the feeling because I don't even know."

"What are we going to do."

"Find Hudson and defeat this Schatten to get back home. Now let's get back into bed and figure this out in the morning. I think better when I'm well rested."

They climbed back into the bed and both managed to sleep.
