Chapter twenty eight: heart to heart

“I've brought food!" Ryder walked in gleefully holding up a bag. Mason and Megan wake up from their nap.

"What did you bring?" Mason asks, sitting up.

"Good food." Ryder places the bag on the bed. Megan had let go of Mason and is now laying on the bed going back to sleep.

"Did I interrupt something?" Ryder pointed to Megan sleeping. Mason side glances Megan.

"Nope, not at all."

"Okay, well I bought sandwiches from Subway then I bought your favourite bags of chips."

"Yay, at least something will cheer me up after this shit of a mess."

"I don't blame you." Ryder passes the sandwich to Mason, he takes the chair and pulls it up to the bed. "I also bought her lunch but she'll have it after."

They ate in silence when Ryder finally broke it. "So . . . how're you feeling?"

"I almost died so I'm okay."

"Well that's good. To the "you're okay" part . . . not to the dying part. You almost dying wasn't cool man."

"I know. Megan already gave me that talk, don't need you as well."

"That's good she gave you that talk. I couldn't lose you too."

"And you won't."

He nodded slightly, taking a bite of his sandwich. "Let's not talk about that but talk about you and . . ." Ryder points to Megan sleeping on the bed.

"What about us?"

Ryder snorts. "C'mon. It's obvious. The way she yelled your name when you were dying or when she literally pushed you away from getting pulled in through the portal. Who does that?"

"Okay but that doesn't explain that she likes me in that way."

"I've seen the way she looks at you. The next morning after that night in the hotel, she kept staring at you like you did something to her."

"I've done nothing but sleep." That's a lie. He almost kissed her but did not tell Ryder that. Unless . . .

"I almost kissed Megan . . . twice."

"Twice?!" Ryder screeches.

"Please be louder will ya?"

"Sorry . . . but twice? When?" He whispers.

"You don't need to know that."

"But you almost kissed her twice. That's awesome." Ryder scrunches the wrapper back into the bag and takes Mason's wrapper as well. Ryder waits on the chips for a bit before eating them.

"So . . . are you two secretly dating?"

"No we are certainly not."

"You shut that down quickly."

"Well we aren't dating and never will be."

Ryder snapped his fingers as his face glowed up. "I have an idea."

"What?"

"What if she was the queen? You know? When you're crowned king she could be crowned queen."

"You do realize that being king and queen takes a lot of responsibility. If she's not ready to take the responsibility then she can't. Megan may not want to be queen. I'll have to rule alone."

"Ah, okay."

Megan stirs around but still is sleeping. However, she drapes her arm over his torso. Mason strokes her head calmingly. "Alright Mason, tell me the truth and I won't tell anyone. Do you like Megan in that way?"

"What makes you think I'll come out to you?"

"Well I want to try. It never hurts to try."

"Okay," Mason said, picking the bag up and searching for his chips. He tried to be quiet when opening the bag but failed.

"Damnit."

She stirred again but was still asleep. He sets the chips aside for now. "I have this feeling . . . odd feeling actually," he begins. "I don't know what this feeling is. It's deep and my heart pounds every time something happens."

Ryder smiles knowing what's coming. "I know what the feeling is," Ryder says.

"I declined the feeling. Didn't want to admit it and I still won't."

"But you just admit it. You like her."

"I never said I liked her or admitted my feelings. All I said is that this one feeling is different."

"I guess that's true." Ryder leans forward. "Let me tell you something. I don't know much about feelings but I do know that when you bury your feelings they will surface at some point.

"I don't have feelings for her, Ryder. Don't get any ideas."

"But you almost kissed her."

"Yeah well that doesn't mean I like her in that way."

"Okay stubborn ass man."

"Shut up Ryder."

Ryder chuckled, raising his feet on top of the bed. "Well she's getting better with her selfishness and her attitude."

"She is."

"What are you boys talking about?" Megan groans as her eyes are still closed.

"Nothing," Ryder says. Megan opens her eyes glaring at Ryder.

"Okay, so you didn't just talk about me and Mason getting together."

"You were listening?"

"Well I wasn't fully asleep. You woke me up when you barged into here but I wasn't finished yet."

"Damn, but you did hear me talk about you being queen."

"I did and I could take care of a kingdom. I just don't want to."

"Well guess what you two, I have a feeling you both like each other in that way and I'll make sure you both admit it."

"What are you, fucking cupid?" Mason asks bringing his arm around from her head, resting it on his lap.

"Yes."

"Okay then . . ." Megan got up from the bed stretching. "Where's Charlie?" she asks. "At the hotel tracking down Cory."

"How's that coming?" Mason asks.

"No idea. Megan you should check on him . . . and get washed up."

"Should I though?"

"Yeah," both men said. She shakes her head sighing when she reluctantly agrees.

"Fine, I'll be back in a couple hours." She walked out of the room but came back. "Where's the hotel?"

"It's in the mall."

"Which room?"

"254."

"Thank you." she went away.

-

"Boys, I swear," she mumbles as she walks into the mall. It took her twenty minutes to get to the hotel with all the twists and turns of the mall. The mall could get very confusing if people didn't know where to go. Once she's there, she walks up the steps into the lobby and reaches the rooms. She found room 257 and knocked.

"Who is it?"

"Charlie it's me, Megan."

"'Kay one sec." She heard rustling in the room until the locks clicked. The door opens wide revealing the messy room of clothes on the floor and bed, and food wrappers all over as well. "What happened here?"

"Don't ask me. It just happened."

"That's nice. Well I'm having a shower so if you don't mind . . ."

"Nope, not at all." Charlie went back to the computer to track Cory. Megan went into the bathroom and locked it. Taking one good look at herself she understood what the men said. Her hair's a mess and she looked dead (no pun intended). Stripping her clothes she turned the water on and she hopped in.
