Chapter thirty one: goodbye
Hailey and Justin are waiting with him reassuring him unsuccessfully. After Mason took Megan to the emergency room, he got his friends out of the cells and had to kill off any spirits that were lingering.
Then he went to the town to find any survivors, thank god there were some. He helped a bit to clean up the town but couldn't stay for long. Now he's sitting outside the room waiting for news.
A nurse walks out and he jumps up when the nurse knows what he was going to ask.
"She's gonna be okay. She's got a punctured lung and a couple ribs broken. It'll take seven to twelve months to fully heal but she needs to take it easy afterwards. She's lucky she's even alive."
"Oh thank god."
"She took a blow but it'll be okay, your highness."
"Thanks." Mason walks into the room to a sleeping Megan- while the other two wait outside giving Mason his space- with the heart machine beeping. He quietly walks up to the bed and sits on the chair staring at her. Her angelic pale face shining from the sunlight gleaming in.
He gently touches her hair, stroking it. The boss wasn't wrong, her hair is nice.
He leans his head on the side of the bed closing his eyes as his hands make its way down to hers. Gently grasping it he holds onto it as silent tears slide down his face.
"I'm sorry," he mutters.
Stroking her hand with his thumb to comfort himself. Megan stirred and lightly squeezed his hand. He jerks his head up as Megan blinks her eyes open. She looks around until her eyes land on him.
"Mason?" she mumbles.
"Hi," he softly says with a small smile breaking free. She stares at him until she breaks down. The waterworks finally set free as reality finally sets in.
"I almost died for good." Mason embraces her, rubbing her back.
"I know." Megan clutches his shirt and is shaking from fear and burying her face in his chest. "I was scared I wasn't going to make it."
"I knew you would make it."
He continued to calm Megan down. Once she's calm down, Mason pulls back still grasping onto her. "You also scared me a bit when you fully transformed into a demon."
"It did? Does that mean I won the bet?"
"Yeah. If I wasn't lying here crippled I wouldn't have said anything. I wanted to tell you in case . . . in case . . ."
"Hey, it's okay. You're alive and that's what counts."
She nods still clutching onto his shirt. "Is Ryder okay?"
"Yeah, he's with the others cleaning up the mess."
"Why aren't you helping?"
"I did. I wanted to come see you to see how you were. You gave us all a fright you know."
"It's okay, just don't try to play hero when things get like that. But I have to admit, you were pretty brave."
"Why thank you."
They sat in silence unsure what to say. Megan lays back down in bed to rest as Mason folds his arms on the bed. Her eyes flutter close as she relaxes and grabs his hand. He comforts her by bringing her hand up to his lips where he kisses it. She smiles a small smile.
"What day is it?" she asks out of nowhere.
Her eyes jerked open. "It's your coronation!"
"Not anymore. It's been postponed until I can find a date as soon as possible."
Ryder and the rest quietly come in with concern when relief washes away when they see Megan up.
"Hey, how are you doing?" Ryder asks.
"I've had better days."
"That's good you're okay. We were scared when Mason told us," Hailey replies.
"I'm fine. Just sore in the area where I got stabbed."
"We're glad that you're doing okay. We've come to say goodbye," Melody states.
"You're leaving already?" Mason asks.
"Yeah," Jane said, "Jeff wants us back."
"Wait, before you guys go," Charlie starts. "I've found this." He pulls out a potion showing everyone. "I found this in a pocket on the body."
"What is it?" Ryder asks.
"It's a potion where a soul can turn into a human, immortality."
"I'd say give it to Justin or Hailey," Mason says. Charlie hands it over to Hailey and she takes it, but is hesitant to drink it.
"I don't think we'll need this. Here, Megan, you deserve this."
"Why? You should have it. You've got a child for god's sake."
"I know, but you deserve this potion more than anyone."
"Really? I don't think so."
"You do. Not only did you push Mason out of the way from the time machine, but countless times you fought Cory and the boss to stop them. You deserve to become human. You showed that you're not a bad person even if you fought with Melody." Everyone chuckles.
"Thank you Hailey. Are you sure about this?"
"I am sure."
"Will I ever see you again?" Ryder jumps in.
"I don't know. What I do know is that we'll always be in your heart," Justin replies, placing his hand on top of Ryder's chest.
"I'm going to miss you."
"We're going to miss you too." The three of them hugged it out first before hugs went around.
"I may not like you, but you are a strong and brave woman," Melody says, hugging Megan. "Get better soon."
"Thank you, Melody."
"You have taken good care of him. We're happy with the way he's grown," Justin says, hugging Mason.
"I kept my promise, didn't I?"
"You did, and we're grateful for everything you did. I'm sorry we had to leave the world so soon."
"Don't apologize Hailey. You couldn't help it. I want you two to be safe and hope to see you soon."
"We pray for the same. And good luck on being king," Justin wishes.
"Thanks, I'll make the best of it."
Once the goodbyes have been given, the four of them have vanished into thin air, leaving the other four to stare at the spot they once were. Ryder sniffled as silent tears spilled. His heart ached as he hasn't got a clue when he'll see his parents next.
Mason pulls him in for a comforting embrace as Ryder lets out his emotions. "I-I-I mi-miss them."
"I know you do. It's hard."
Charlie had taken Ryder back to his bedroom where they'll play Ticket to Ride while Mason stayed back with Megan as they stared at the potion in her lap.
"It was thoughtful of Hailey but she should've taken it. She has a reason to become human, not me."
"She saw you having a second chance. Would have a better life with it."
"I feel bad for Ryder, though. He just wanted to be with his parents."
"I know. I'm glad that he at least got to meet them and spend as much time together as possible."
"Yeah . . ."
Megan sat up in bed as pain shot through her system. Gritting her teeth she finds a comfortable position to sit. "I want a hug," she blurts out.
"We'll . . . come here then." Mason pulls Megan gently into a warm embrace when they pull back and their noses inches from each other.
They lean in kissing softly. Mason places his hands on her cheeks as she wraps her arms around him pulling him closer. They pull away still embraced in each other as they smile, looking into each other's eyes.
