Chapter 5

INT. DARK HALLWAY #3

Trevor steps into the hallway, seeing the many doors on both the sides.

He analyzes the hallway, unsure of his next destination.

We hear a maniacal laughter in the distance, Trevor looks at the door at the end of the hall, hearing this.

EERIE VOICE (V.O.)

Control is a weapon.

The lights begin to flicker. One by one, the doors begin to disappear in the darkness.

They are all gone except the door at the end of the hallway.

EERIE VOICE (V.O., CONT’D)

Are you the weapon?

Trevor grabs the gun and holds it to his waist, staying cautious.

EERIE VOICE (V.O., CONT’D)

Are you in control?

Amy, covered in blood, rushes toward Trevor, he points the gun but sees her face, recognizing her. Amy tackles him to the ground!

He grabs her hands, trying to push her off of him.

TREVOR

Amy?!?

She squalls and screams, coughing blood on Trevor. He yelps and shoves her away.

TREVOR

What the hell?!

As he looks over to her, she is gone.

He tightens his grip on the gun, standing up.

He exhales continuously, fearing what is a dazing confusion to him.

The last flickers once, on and off then back on.

He sees the Jump Sanity Battery laying on the ground, with the switch unhooked as if broken. Trevor stares at it, knowing what it is.

EERIE VOICE (V.O.)

Things aren’t as they seem, are they, Trevor?

Trevor grabs the pieces of the battery, putting them in his pocket.

EERIE VOICE (V.O., CONT’D)

Sucks to be the victim, huh?

We hear a threatening cackle as the lights go off. Black.

The lights slowly turn back on, revealing a doorway leading to another hallway.

Trevor slowly walks to it, and steps out.

INT. DARK HALLWAY #1

Frank and Hamilton step out of one of the doors, seeing the Dark Hallway.

HAMILTON

What the hell is going on?

FRANK

I dunno. I’ve seen strange things within the human mind, but this.... It’s almost as if the subconscious controls its own chaos.

HAMILTON

How is that possible? There’s no control here.

FRANK

That’s what I’m saying. Leonard’s not controlling it. His subconscious is fighting itself.

HAMILTON

Have you had a situation like this before?

FRANK

Once.... She didn’t make it.

HAMILTON

You’re talking about Amy, aren’t you?

Frank looks down taking a deep breath.

FRANK

She had similar out bursts of violence exactly like Leonard. Marshall, Jim, Justin, Trevor, and I went into her mind to resolve it. We lost ourselves inside. And when we stepped out, she was bleeding almost like her body lost control of itself. She had died. It was my fault.

Hamilton stares at him, almost feeling guilty for a past flaw.

HAMILTON

I remember the funeral. Closed casket.

FRANK

That’s not the worst part.

He breaths heavily.

FRANK

She was... uh....

Frank lays his right hand on his forehead, tearing up.

FRANK

.... She was a few weeks pregnant....

Hamilton’s jaw drops as he hears this.

He shakes his head looking down.

HAMILTON

I am so sorry. I-

FRANK

- didn’t know. No one did.

Frank wipes the tears away.

FRANK (CONT’D)

I was ready. We were ready. To live our lives together. And I killed her.

HAMILTON

She was happy. She loved you.

Frank nods his head, accepting Hamilton’s reassuring words.

FRANK

Our last words weren’t what I would have preferred to be our last words. She said she believed me. I told her everything would be alright.

We hear footsteps echo in the distance, slowly growing louder.

FRANK

I..... uh....

He smiles, chuckling quietly.

FRANK (CONT’D)

I got a ring, I was gonna propose.

HAMILTON

She would have loved that, Frank.

A door opens beside them; we see Trevor step out.

Hamilton and Frank stand to their feet, in caution, then recognize Trevor.

TREVOR

Frank? Jeremiah?

FRANK

Trevor. Thank god. Are you all right?

TREVOR

I’m fine. Where’s everyone else?

FRANK

We don’t know.

HAMILTON

You’re the only one we’ve seen since we’ve been here.

TREVOR

Damn. I was hoping you’d have found the others.

Frank shows Trevor the bloody remote.

FRANK

We found this.

Trevor sees the blooded finger print on the play button.

TREVOR

My god.

Trevor hands Frank the gun, and reaches in his pocket for the Jump Sanity Battery.

FRANK

You found a gun?!

TREVOR

Damn place gave me a choice; I guess I chose wrong. So, it gave me that. I also found this; I was hoping you knew what it meant.

Trevor hands him the two pieces of the Jump Sanity Battery. Frank exhales heavily.

FRANK

Were these pieces already separated?

TREVOR

Yeah.

FRANK

Fucking great.

HAMILTON

What does it mean?

Frank looks around him, seeing every doorway.

FRANK

Whatever we’re dealing with is trying to tell us something.

HAMILTON

What’s it trying to tell us now?

FRANK

Someone unplugged the Jump Sanity Battery.

Trevor grunts as he kicks one of the doors, angrily. Hamilton breaths deeply.

TREVOR

We’re fucked!

FRANK

We are not fucked! We just need to find Marshall and Jim, before it’s too late.

But before we can do that, we need to talk about what we’ve seen.

They all look down, thinking.

FRANK (CONT’D)

Well?!

TREVOR

Someone kicked me in the face after I tried grabbing a key. That’s how I got the gun.

FRANK

Who?

TREVOR

I don’t know, I didn’t get a good look at him.

HAMILTON

I had a run in with someone too.

FRANK

Did you see their face?

HAMILTON

No, I didn’t.

FRANK

Damnit. What else did you see?

TREVOR

I saw a memory of Leonard playing in a playground.

Frank looks at Hamilton.

FRANK

What about you, Jeremiah? What did you see?

Hamilton just stares at Frank.

FRANK (CONT’D)

Tell me now.

HAMILTON

I saw a duplicate of myself. Just before I ran into you. He said....

Hamilton takes a few breaths.

HAMILTON (CONT’D)

.. He said we were all gonna die....

FRANK

Is that all you’ve seen?

Hamilton looks at him, unable to tell the truth.

HAMILTON

Yes.

Frank nods, believing Hamilton’s lie.

FRANK

Okay so.... one part of Leonard’s subconscious is trying to kill us, another part is trying to keep us from unlocking something.

HAMILTON

What do they want us to find in here?

LEO (O.S.)

The part of his subconscious he can’t control.

They all turn to face the darkness behind them, we see a man who resembles Leonard Conroy in appearance step out of the dark.

LEO (CONT’D)

There is more happening here than you can comprehend.

FRANK

Who the hell are you?!

LEO

Calm yourself, Frank.

TREVOR

What do you want?

LEO

I want peace within control.

HAMILTON

Control?

FRANK

Control over what? Leonard? Because looking like him isn’t fooling anyone.

LEO

I don’t wish to fool you. I wish to help you.

TREVOR

You can start by telling us what the hell is going on.

There is a small window of silence as Leo points to the door on the trios right.

LEO

I cannot control your destination, nor can the doors to open. The path you take is the path that has been chosen at random. Stay together and you’ll survive. Only by aligning yourselves with one another can you find the answers to help Leonard. But you must take that door, in order to go further into your cause.

HAMILTON

Why should we trust you?

LEO

I’m the only part of his subconscious that wants to help. You don’t really have a choice.

They look at each other, feeling uneased.

LEO (CONT’D)

I leave this to you.

Leo steps into the darkness, disappearing from their sight. Frank breaths deeply.

FRANK

What do you think we should do?

TREVOR

Go through another door.

HAMILTON

No, we should listen to him.

TREVOR

Do you want to die?!

FRANK

Jeremiah’s right. This is the only advice we’ve gotten from this place.

Trevor looks at his feet, thinking on this.

TREVOR

Fine. Let’s go.

Frank slowly opens the door, each step in one at a time.

INT. MEMORY ROOM #6

They step into the room, seeing a T.V. and a remote on a stool.

TREVOR

Leonard had a girlfriend named Kelly. They were very close, grew up together.

FRANK

Think that’s why he’s suffering?

TREVOR

Probably, but it’s not the source of the problem.

FRANK

Did you know about Kelly, Jeremiah?

HAMILTON

He mentioned her once or twice. Honestly, I don’t have much information on his past life. I know his mother died when he was very young.

They step to the stool.

FRANK

How did she die?

HAMILTON

Violently.

Frank wipes sweat off his face.

FRANK

How old was he?

HAMILTON

Seven.

TREVOR

Jesus...

HAMILTON

I had to find that out myself too.

Frank rubs the back of his neck, uneased.

FRANK

This is so fucked up.

HAMILTON

I’m sorry, Frank.

FRANK

It’s not your fault.

Hamilton looks down, as if it is.

FRANK

Let’s get this over with.

Frank grabs the remote on the stool, a piece of tape is stuck to it.

It has the words,

“Who can you trust, Frank?”

He stares at the words, afraid.

TREVOR

You okay, man?

Frank presses the play button, the T.V. turns to a memory of Leonard Conroy.

Leonard wakes Kelly as he picks up his jacket from the floor.

INT. KELLY’S ROOM - 10 YEARS AGO- MORNING

Kelly smiles as he puts his jacket on.

KELLY

Hey.

YOUNG ADULT CONROY

Hey.

KELLY

Where you going?

YOUNG ADULT CONROY

I gotta get home, Caitlyn’s probably worried.

KELLY

Oh....

Her smiles fades away, he notices this.

YOUNG ADULT CONROY

Kelly... last night was a....

KELLY

Mistake?

YOUNG ADULT CONROY

No, it....

She sighs in stress, then sits on the bed holding her hand.

YOUNG ADULT CONROY

..... I just.... I’m married. I shouldn’t have done it. I’m very sorry, Kelly.

She rubs his hand with her thumb.

KELLY

She cheats on you so much, Leonard...

He looks at his hand before he holds hers.

KELLY (CONT’D)

I love you...

He kisses her forehead.

YOUNG ADULT CONROY

I’m sorry, I have to go.

He lets go of her hand and walks to the door. He stops at the door, sighing.

KELLY

We can’t be friends, can we?

He scratches the back of his neck.

YOUNG ADULT CONROY

It’s not that.... I will always be there for you Kelly. Nothing can change that.

INT. MEMORY ROOM #6

Frank pauses the memory.

FRANK

I’ve seen her face before.

TREVOR

What?

FRANK

I’ve never met her, but I’m sure I’ve seen that face. It’s familiar.

HAMILTON

I recognize it too. Strange.

Frank looks at the remote again, seeing a piece of paper sticking out of the battery slot of the remote.

He opens it, no batteries, but instead; a large, crumbled up wad of newspaper.

Frank takes it and opens it up.

He sees a picture of Kelly with an article explaining her death.

FRANK

That’s where I’ve seen her from.

TREVOR

Let me see.

Frank hands him the wrinkled newspaper, showing him the article.

TREVOR

Whoa.

FRANK

I remember now. I read this article a few years ago.

Hamilton steps over to see the article.

HAMILTON

I remember. You brought this to my attention in class.

FRANK

Yeah. He was having an affair with her. And then.... she died.

Frank looks at the T.V.

FRANK

This isn’t what caused you to break, come on Leonard, show me.

The lights go off, then back on.

The remote, stool, and T.V. are gone, but the newspaper stays in Trevor’s hand, who puts it in his pocket.

TREVOR

You really had to ask the subconscious for something worse, huh?

We hear maniacal laughter, only not the laugh we’ve been hearing before.

This laugh has a different pitch, and voice pattern.

The three looks at their surroundings.

FRANK

You hear that?

HAMILTON

It sounds different.

TREVOR

What? The laugh?

FRANK

Yeah.

TREVOR

Well, that’s comforting.

HAMILTON

This is a different laugh though.

TREVOR

Frank, you still got that gun?

FRANK

Yeah.

TREVOR

I suggest you get it ready.

Frank takes the gun out of his belt loop; he flips the chamber of the gun.

No bullets.

FRANK

The damn things empty.

The laugh grows closer.

TREVOR

What? Gimme that!

Trevor takes the gun, looking at the chamber.

TREVOR

What a load of shit.

Marshall rushes out of the darkness and slices Frank’s shoulder.

Frank falls back, yelping, Hamilton jumps back in panic, Trevor hits Marshall with the revolver! Marshall steps back covering his face.

Hamilton lays on the ground, covering his mouth, Trevor looks at Marshall, and Frank tries to stand as he holds his shoulder looking at Marshall.

Marshall begins to laugh insanely as he turns to face them. He has many gory cuts on his face. The three look at Marshall frightened.

TREVOR

Marshall?

He continues to cackle.

FRANK

The hell happened to you?

MARSHALL

Control... Is a weapon...

FRANK

Marshall.... Marshall put the knife down.

MARSHALL

How does it feel, Frank...? Being friends with a killer?...

TREVOR

Marshall, you’re not a killer.

MARSHALL

Tell that to Amy.

Trevor and Hamilton look at Frank, who is staring at Marshall in confused, enflamed eyes.

FRANK

What?

MARSHALL

Yes. That’s right.

Marshall stabs his shoulder, as if using it to point at himself. His shoulder begins to bleed.

MARSHALL (CONT’D)

I did it. I lost my mind, and went inside.

I. Killed. Amy.

Frank lowers his hand from his shoulder, tightening his fist.

MARSHALL

She held you back. Made you weak.

He rubs the bloody blade on his cheek.

MARSHALL

Try letting loose some time.

FRANK

You killed her?...

TREVOR

Frank...

FRANK

No, no, no. I need to know.

Marshall twitches his eyes as he smirks methodically.

FRANK

I accidentally stabbed her thinking it-

MARSHALL

Was a false entity of your damned memories, I know. But she was already bleeding to death.

He laughs insanely.

MARSHALL (CONT’D)

You’re innocent in all of this.

Marshall lunges the blade at Frank, who dodges.

TREVOR

If you knew you’d go insane, why’d you get involved?

MARSHALL

Denial. Denial that I killed like my brother did. Why should I deny....

He smiles as blood drips off his face.

MARSHALL (CONT’D)

....... Who I am?

FRANK

How could you kill her? She was your sister....

MARSHALL

Pfft.... my brother killed Mom and Dad. I guess the job didn’t finish with him...

FRANK

You’re sick. We can help you.

TREVOR

Frank, you know that’s not how it works. He lost himself. Frank, he’s become a part of Leonard now.

Marshall laughs in ludicrous psychosis.

MARSHALL

Sanity is an idea.

Marshall lunges at Frank, who grabs Marshall’s hands- holding the blade in-between them!

Trevor points the gun at Marshall’s temple.

TREVOR

Put the knife down!

Marshall kicks Trevor in the kneecap, who falls down dropping the gun!

Marshall and Frank struggle as the two try to use Marshall’s knife to kill one another!

MARSHALL

Holding back. Figures. Still letting your dead bitch control you.

Frank pushes the blade closer to Marshall’s stomach.

FRANK

Stop!

MARSHALL

Do it.

Marshall pushes the blade closer to Frank’s stomach.

MARSHALL (CONT’D)

So easy. Just like Amy.

Frank grows angrier.

FRANK

Shut the hell up.

MARSHALL

Alright.

Marshall shoves the blade forward, Frank tries to move the blade away, only to have it stab into his side!

Frank grunts as the two fall to the ground!

Marshall punches Frank in the face several times, Frank rips the knife out of his side and stabs him in the shoulder!

Trevor hits Marshall in the back of the head with the gun.

Marshall falls off of Frank and stands to his feet, ripping the knife out of his shoulder.

Marshall lunges the blade at Trevor, who steps back, just barely cutting his chest only enough to show but not be fatal!

Frank tackles Marshall, causing him to drop the knife!

He right crosses Marshall in the face, who grasps his hands around Frank’s throat, trying to choke him. Frank grabs at Marshall’s hands, then cloches Marshall’s jaw, immediately punching him!

They both roll on the ground as they both lose grip on one another!

Trevor rushes over to kick Marshall, who catches his foot and twists his ankle!

He falls to the ground, Marshall crawls over top of him grabbing the knife and stabbing Trevor in the hip!

Then his side! Marshall raises the blade to stab his chest, but Frank kicks Marshall off of Trevor!

FRANK

Trevor!

Frank grabs Trevor, dragging him away from Marshall, who runs away in the darkness laughing in endless psychotics.

The laugh slowly fades away as Frank lays Trevor down, putting pressure on the wounds.

FRANK

Oh my god. Trevor talk to me.

TREVOR

I’m alive. I think.

Frank rips a piece of his shirt off, wrapping it around Trevor’s waist and tightening it to stay.

FRANK

Why the hell didn’t you help?!

Frank glares at Hamilton.

HAMILTON

I didn’t know what to do. I-I panicked.

Frank tightens up the wounds exposed on Trevor’s body.

He grabs Trevor’s hand and lifts him up, Hamilton stands.

TREVOR

You alright?

Frank breaths deeply.

FRANK

I’m fine, I’m more worried about you.

TREVOR

I’ll be alright-

As Trevor tries to step forward, he collapses, Frank and Marshall catch him, keeping him on his feet.

FRANK

Yeah, sure you are.

(beat)

We need to get the hell out of here.

TREVOR

No, Frank.

A door opens behind them; they see a door.

TREVOR

You need to keep going.

Frank looks into his friend’s eyes.

FRANK

I’m not leaving you.

TREVOR

You’re the only one who can figure this out. I’ll just slow you down.

HAMILTON

I can hold him, we’ll follow you. Don’t let us get in the way.

Frank sighs.

FRANK

You’ll stay near me?

HAMILTON

Yes.

Frank lets Hamilton carry Trevor, by letting him wrap his arms around his neck.

The three slowly step to the door, Frank stops.

FRANK

I don’t know if I can do this.

TREVOR

Jeremiah, give us a minute.

Hamilton lets go of Trevor, who leans on the doorway.

Hamilton steps back, a small distance away to ensure he isn’t too far from the two.

TREVOR

Frank?

FRANK

Yeah, I just need a minute.

TREVOR

Frank ....

Trevor places his hand on Frank’s shoulder, in a friendly gesture.

TREVOR (CONT’D)

.... I know how hard this is for you.

Frank looks at the ground, listening to Trevor.

TREVOR (CONT’D)

This isn’t an act of redemption, is it?

A moment of silence passes.

FRANK

When I talked to her about jumping into her mind, she had complete faith and trust in me. She, uh....

He chuckles silently.

FRANK (CONT’D)

.... She told me she wanted to dance with me like she did on our anniversary.

TREVOR

Dirty dance?

They both chuckle.

FRANK

Hell no. Waltz, slow dancing. She liked to dance, especially in the rain. And when she died, I thought about suicide.... For years. And now I don’t know what to think. I abused myself, thinking I had killed her. That she died because of me. And now I have to accept I was wrong? All those years of trying to forgive myself, for nothing?

Trevor turns him over slightly, to face him.

TREVOR

Maybe it was so you could do this. Finish what you started.

(beat)

We’re in this together, remember?

FRANK

Yeah. Hamilton, you ready?

Hamilton walks over to them.

HAMILTON

Ready as I’ll ever be.

Hamilton wraps his arms around Trevor, who wraps his arms around the back of Hamilton’s neck. They exit the room.
