Let the Game Begin
Scene 8 opens with the Conductor walking back to the locked door in the performance lodge
Conductor: *pounds on the door three times* Charlotte Miller…
Charlotte: *walks up to the door* Seriously! What am I doing in here?!
Conductor: *chuckles slightly* Why you’re just another player for my game; another vocalist for me to… conduct. *sighs*
Charlotte: Why are you doing this?!
Conductor: Sorry, but we’ll have to save the questions until afterwards. First, we’re going to play a little game. *pauses for a moment* If you can solve my riddle, you’ll be released.
(The Conductor’s Cryptogram starts playing)
Charlotte: You’ll let me out of here if I solve your riddle?
Conductor: Let you out of here… into the next phase of my game. *laughs deeply*
Charlotte: Fine. What’s your riddle?
Conductor: I can make sounds with the press of a chord, but I am also made for cars or doors. What am I?
Charlotte: *stays silent, thinking for a moment*
Conductor: Ten seconds left.
Charlotte: The answer to your riddle is keys! Keys make sounds when pressed on a piano or keyboard and keys are made for door locks and car ignitions!
(The Conductor’s Cryptogram stops playing)
Conductor: *momentarily silent, then speaks up* Well done. I’ll see you backstage in a few short measures. *unlocks the door and walks away*
Charlotte: *swings the door open and looks around for the Conductor* Where could he have gone?!
Mr. Paris: *walks through the performance room towards the backstage, then turns his head and spots Charlotte* Oh, Miss Charlotte! *walks towards Charlotte* Thank the Lord! I thought you were gone! I was just about to head backstage to see if the Stage Frighteners were back there like they said they would be. We don’t need anymore missing students than we already have!
Charlotte: Hey, where’s Eli?
Mr. Paris: He went to his cabin a while ago. He said he was going to need the sleep if you and him were going to be practicing for the performance in two days.
Charlotte: But how are we supposed to practice when people are disappearing?!
Mr. Paris: Leave the searching to me! This is my camp and I will not let anything stand in my way! Now, you best be getting some rest if you want to practice your best! *walks away and out of the performance lodge*
Charlotte: *walks backstage* Wait a minute. Why aren’t the Stage Frighteners back here like Mr. Paris said they would be? Mr. Paris! *leaves backstage and runs out of the performance lodge and looks around for Mr. Paris* *groans* Where could he be?! *runs farther from performance lodge and continues looking for Mr. Paris*
Stage Frighteners: *enter backstage through back entrance door behind the performance lodge*
Billy: Come on, Ken. Do we really need to practice this late at night?
Ken: Yes! I’m sick and tired of the Orchestrators being better than us supposedly, and now that Eric, Geoff, and Genevieve are out of the way, nothing’s gonna stop us from getting more applause from the audience this weekend!
Billy: *grabs a keyboard and places it on a keyboard stand* Why do you care so much about being better?!
Ken: That’s how I was raised. *stands a microphone stand up next to the keyboard stand, then places his guitar on a guitar stand*
Billy: Why were you raised like that?
Ken: My parents were kind of perfectionists. If I did anything wrong or if I came in second place for anything, I got in trouble.
Billy: Dude, that’s really stupid.
Ken: That’s what I had to deal with.
Conductor: *walks backstage* What the…?
Ken: Woah, who are you and what the heck do you think you’re doing back here?
Conductor: I could ask you the same thing, Ken.
Ken and Billy: *walk closer to the Conductor*
Conductor: Come on now. Why don’t we just talk this out?
(Backstage Intermission starts playing)
Ken: I bet you came back here to mess with us and keep us from practicing for the big performance, didn’t ya?!
Conductor: *stammers, then sighs* Screw this. *quickly uppercuts the keyboard, making it hit Ken in the face and fall to the ground*
Ken: *stumbles backwards from impact*
Billy: Hey! *grabs microphone stand*
Conductor: *kicks Billy backwards*
Billy: *stumbles backwards from kick and drops the microphone stand*
Ken: *gets on his feet, barely*
Conductor: *kicks the keyboard into Ken’s feet*
Ken: *feet slide out from under and lands on his stomach, then passes out*
Billy: *sits up*
Conductor: *stomps on the microphone stand, causing it to fling up and hit Billy in the face*
Billy: *grabs his face and falls backwards and passes out*
Conductor: That outta teach you.
Madison: *walks backstage* Mr. Paris?
Conductor: *turns around to face Madison*
Madison: *gasps and almost screams*
Conductor: *runs to Madison and covers her mouth* No need to spoil the surprise!
Madison: *grabs the Conductor’s arm, trying to make him release her*
Conductor: *grabs Madison’s shirt and tosses into the drum set*
Madison: *crashes into the drum set and passes out*
(Backstage Intermission stops playing)
Conductor: Now, where has Miss Charlotte gone? *walks out from backstage and starts looking for Charlotte*
Charlotte: *continues walking around, looking for Mr. Paris* Mr. Paris! I need to talk to you! *inhales and exhales deeply*
(More Rocks starts playing)
Charlotte: I am lost. I am crossed! My mind is tossed. I really must get out of here! I am lost. I am crossed! My mind is tossed. I don’t want to disappear. I need to find a way to get out, I’m in trouble, there is no doubt. I need to see what he is all about and finally figure out a way to breakout. Then I’ll have to find everyone, hopefully the Conductor, we can outrun. I cannot let him take anyone else or we will all be done! I need to find a way to get out, I’m in trouble, there is no doubt. Conductor: *voice-over* This is the place where you’re going to stay!
Charlotte: I am lost. I am crossed! My mind is tossed.
Conductor: *voice-over* You shouldn’t have fought back because now you’re astray! *normal* Why does she think she can defeat me? I’ve taken everyone, I am on a spree! Doing this stuff just fills me up with glee! Until Charlotte decided to play gutsy! She is really trying to put up a fight! She can try, because I’ll be here all night! She’s a brave one for not choosing flight, but she’s not going to stop me from setting things right! Why does she think she can defeat me? I’ve taken everyone, I am on a spree! (More Rocks stops playing)
Charlotte: I’d better head back to the lodge where it’s safe. *starts walking back to the performance lodge*
