Chapter 4, A.D.A. Blantyre-Tattershall

“And you Dr. Alexander? Do you agree to keep in touch, pass along information in a timely fashion?” Her smile, naughty, was the only encouragement he needed.

“I do, Miss Blantyre, I most certainly do. As a matter of fact, why don’t we share our thoughts tonight over dinner?”

“I would love too but I have to return to reality. Last night was the exception, Walt – not the rule.” She touched his arm with affection, her eyes slightly watered, a tear threatening from the corner of her eye. “Don’t get me wrong. It was nice to forget, if only for a moment, to live a night of passion, a night without responsibility – but that night is over. Tonight its back to being a mom, to spending time with Kayleigh. Time’s too precious and little already so I need to take every moment of it I can. She’s growing up so fast. You understand, don’t you?”

He stared at her a moment before replying. “Do you share? Or is it exclusive?” He must have read the confusion on her face as he continued to explain. “I would like to take Kayleigh out for dinner tonight – if that’s okay with her mother that is? And of course, I would expect you along to chaperone.” His shy smile melted her, if just a little.

“Not usually, to be honest with you, I don’t introduce her to men out of principle. Not that there’ve been many – okay, any – but that’s not the point. The point is – I don’t want to confuse her, get her mixed up until I’m convinced myself there may be a real shot.

He looked beaten, his eyes welling up. “I understand and I respect your decision. Maybe another day?”

“Wait a minute.” She smiled, put her tiny hand against his chest. “I didn’t say no – to you. Why don’t you pick us up around seven? Give your ladies a little time to get ready.”

“I can’t.”

“Oh? I thought you wanted—“

“I don’t have a car.”
