Chapter 23: The Jerk/Hero

For the next few days, Mike spent a lot of time with Cindy. They went to the movies, out to lunch, and one time Cindy even took Mike to Florida for the weekend. Mike never felt like “that loser” anymore; he was the new Mike. But Ian wasn’t so happy with the “new Mike”.

After he came back from Florida, he told his friend,

“Mike, you’ve been spending more time with Cindy than with me. Right when you started going out with Cindy, I have been doing nothing with you. I’ve called you so many times and all you’ve said is something like, ‘Sorry I can’t. I’m going out with Cindy’.”

Ian wanted the old Mike back, but Mike was such a love magnet for Cindy he just boasted, “You’re just jealous.”

Ian was shocked at his best friend’s response. “Just because you think things won’t work out with you and Cloi doesn’t mean things won’t work out with me and Cindy.” Ian couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He had gone out with Cloi, but not constantly! She hadn’t taken over his life, but he felt that Cindy had taken over Mike’s.

“Fine. If you think that, you’re just a fuckin’ love magnet and you’re obsessed with Cindy; you just won’t admit it,” snapped Ian.

“Well things will never work out with you and Cloi!” Mike shouted back. He was getting agitated with Ian.

“You son of a bitch!”

“Bastard!” Mike cried back. Ian left for his locker, wanting to never speak to Mike again.

After Ian left, Mike walked home alone. I don’t need him. He was a terrible friend anyway. When Mike arrived home, the phone rang. He picked up the receiver.

“Hi Mike,” said Cindy on the other line. “I got tickets to see Green Day in concert, wanna go?”

“Sure,” replied Mike.

“How much longer is it going to be?” They were now at the Air Canada Centre but Audioslave was still on stage.

“We came early!” Cindy said loudly over the music. “This song’s almost over and then Green Day will be on.” As soon as Cindy finished her sentence, there was cheering from the crowd and Green Day appeared on stage. They introduced theMs..elves and soon began playing “Geek Stink Breath”. Mike knew he was having the time of his life.
