Benefits of a No-Stress Daily Writing Habit

Writing, like any other skill, requires regular attention and diligent practice. A daily habit helps, and that daily habit doesn’t mean we have to work on a novel every day. Blogging, or even just putting down small everyday achievements in a journal, can positively influence brain function!

Let’s look at some benefits for creating a daily writing habit:

Improve Writing Skills

The first is the most obvious – practice makes perfect! If you earn a living writing, you have deadlines to meet, an audience to connect with, articles to post, and content to create. Even when you aren’t writing, you’re probably thinking about writing. Obviously, writing every day benefits your literacy, knowledge of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

But here’s something you might not know: the pen is mightier than the keyboard! Typing is automated, and most of our mistakes are corrected by a computer. Handwriting will help you notice and correct your own mistakes. Consider drafting articles or a chapter in a notebook as an exercise to improve your writing skill.

Improve Analytical Skills

Good analytical skills are a must-have for any professional. We were taught the importance of analytical skills in school when preparing an outline and analyzing source materials before writing papers.

The University College London suggests that writing skills and analytical skills are closely connected, and in order to develop analytical abilities through writing, we should question even the most obvious facts. Other tips to develop analytical skills through writing include:

  • Indicate a conclusion first: write down the detail that will conclude your writing and then develop an analysis that will lead to this particular detail.
  • Bullet point all ideas before putting them together in one coherent narrative.
  • Draw a mind map before writing. Break writing into logical parts and identify the key demands for your research.

Mental and Physical Health Benefits

As mentioned earlier, journaling can be healthy! Psychologists from the University of California investigated the effects of daily journaling on the brain. The study found that both men and women equally benefitted from journaling, as it improved mood and impacted positive brain activity.

Another study performed by researchers in New Zealand identified patients recovering from medically necessary biopsies who spent 20 minutes journaling for 3 days healed more fully than the control group. They concluded that journaling likely reduced stress and promoted healing.

Other benefits of daily journaling include:

  • Improving your IQ: Writing has a close connection with intelligence. A study from the University of Victoria, Canada strongly indicates that writing can benefit our IQ.
  • Making you more goal-oriented: Writing down goals signals our brain that these things are important, helping us learn to prioritize.
  • Improving memory: Memory is like a muscle and needs regular training. Writing helps fix things in our memory and strengthen that muscle.

Whether you are a professional writer or just a beginner, there are many benefits to a daily writing habit. Consider journaling, handwriting a few paragraphs a day, or simply keeping a notebook by your side. This practice doesn’t have to be stressful, just helpful!
