At Inkitt, we believe every story matters, and on April 27th, we had a wonderful reason to celebrate the creativity of our community: National Tell a Story Day!<\/strong> <\/a>To mark this special day, we asked some of our authors fun questions about their first stories, the rules they love to break, their favorite sentences, and the advice they would give to new writers. Their answers are full of humor, honesty, and inspiration.<\/strong><\/p>\n
Here are their answers.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s the first story you ever wrote \u2014 and would you still publish it today?<\/h2>\n\nVioletOfCourse:<\/strong> <\/a>The first story I ever wrote was Appsalootly Batty and to this day, I\u2019m still trying to write a version of it worthy of publishing. For now, I have a few versions on the internet that are alright, I guess.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nDitzy One:<\/strong> <\/a>Avoiding Fate… but I only published it because I wanted an Inky badge. \ud83e\udd23 Knowing the feedback it got, yes I would publish it today \u2014 but personally, it needs a lot of rework. It\u2019s too long and needs to be broken down into multiple books! It\u2019s an example that sometimes the work you aren\u2019t passionate about still has a place \u2014 don\u2019t be your own worst critic!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nEmil Bronze:<\/strong><\/a> The first story I ever wrote was a Minecraft Fanfiction. I don’t remember the details, but I reused the characters and their names. I wouldn\u2019t publish it now \u2014 7th-grade me doesn\u2019t hold a tealight to current me.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nA T:<\/a><\/strong> The first story I ever wrote was when I was 7, but the first serious one was a 6th-grade story about a Vietnamese refugee child. I mailed it to Tor hoping they\u2019d publish it. I wouldn’t publish it as an adult, but for that age group, it was okay.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nOC Andrea:<\/strong><\/a> The first story I wrote in English started a new journey I didn’t even know I needed. I wrote it to decompress, not expecting readers. Six full stories later, I would absolutely do it all again, starting with that same story.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nAim\u00e9e:<\/strong><\/a> First story: a two-page sci-fi story in my poetry\/journal at 15 years old. The first published story was Sims 4 fanfiction, and I still use that character today.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nWitch_of_Hellridge:<\/strong><\/a> My first finished story was about a girl joining a thieves’ guild \u2014 full of drama and questionable choices. Would I publish it? Absolutely not! It belongs in my vault of Teenage Cringe\u2122, though part of me dreams of giving it a glow-up one day.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
What\u2019s one storytelling rule you love to break \u2014 and why does it work for you?<\/h2>\n\nDitzy One:<\/strong><\/a> I love breaking the fourth wall \u2014 letting the protagonist interact with readers. I also enjoy writing sentence fragments to create emotional pull.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nEmil Bronze: <\/strong><\/a>I break the “always plot your story” rule. I don\u2019t plan at all \u2014 I get a rough idea in my head and run with it. I keep a simple factbook for consistency, but no detailed outlines.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nA T:<\/strong> <\/a>Rules? What are those? Rules are just guidelines. If you break a rule, just make sure you break it well.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nOC Andrea:<\/strong> <\/a>I don’t plot or plan. Strict outlines don\u2019t work for me. Also, I love adverbs and sprinkle commas like glitter throughout my stories.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nM.Lane:<\/strong><\/a> I hate rigid genre expectations. If everyone\u2019s writing werewolf stories a certain way, I want to flip it. Familiar ideas can be shocking and fresh with a new spin.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nAim\u00e9e:<\/strong><\/a> I don\u2019t follow traditional first-draft rules. I write one chapter at a time \u2014 almost like a soap opera \u2014 instead of a full first draft.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nWitch_of_Hellridge: <\/strong><\/a>“Show, don\u2019t tell” \u2014 sometimes it\u2019s more powerful to just say the messy, raw emotion directly. Life is chaotic, so my writing gets to be too.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Share a single sentence from your current story that you\u2019re really proud of<\/h2>\n\nDitzy One:<\/strong> <\/a>“Her traitorous eyes focused on a distant point where the sky met the forest canopy. Untouchable. Unreachable. A blur of color that drew her attention and removed her from reality.”<\/em><\/strong>
\n(<\/em>Or from an existing Inkitt story:“I won\u2019t mourn your death; stupidity is a choice only you could make.”<\/strong>)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nEmil Bronze:<\/strong> <\/a>(From A Summer to Remember)
\n“Pan of bread?” Roderick raised a brow of suspicion at the phrase. “Is that along the lines of a pancake of water?”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nVioletOfCourse:<\/strong> <\/a>(From Child Of The Wolves)
\n“Yeah. I had this friend, his name was Herbert. Well, we didn\u2019t actually know each other for that long, but, well\u2026 I ate him\u2026”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nJERomm:<\/strong><\/a> (From Flat Line<\/a>)<\/em>
\n“David? He was not even in the picture\u2014hell, he wasn\u2019t even a speck of dust floating about her periphery.”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nA T:<\/strong><\/a> (From WIP draft)
\n“Hello Khoa,” she says. She’s the first parent at this school to actually pronounce my name right. “I’m Natalie with a G and the pleasure’s all mine.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nOC Andrea:<\/strong><\/a> (From current story)
\n“But I\u2019ll be brave; I always am. If I\u2019m quiet enough, they\u2019ll eventually come for me. They always do. So I won\u2019t cry, not this time. That would only make them angrier, and tomorrow they\u2019ll lock me down here for even longer. If only there was a spell or magic potion, lotion, or secret ingredient to make me a better healer\u2014a worthy daughter.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nAim\u00e9e:<\/strong><\/a> “Ah! To wake in the arms of my beloved will be something I hope I will always cherish. I certainly feel more whole this morning than I have all week.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nWitch_of_Hellridge:<\/strong><\/a> “And maybe, just maybe, happy endings aren\u2019t endings at all. Maybe they\u2019re just the part where you finally start living.”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
What\u2019s your #1 piece of advice for someone just starting their storytelling journey?<\/h2>\n\nDitzy One:<\/strong><\/a> Write the story you want to read, not the one you think will make you popular.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nEmil Bronze:<\/strong><\/a> Run with it. Doesn\u2019t matter how messy or trashy it is \u2014 just get it written. Fix it later.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nJERomm:<\/strong><\/a> Organize your thoughts \u2014 whether it\u2019s a full outline or a quick summary. Make sure your first few lines grab attention, and your last lines leave readers desperate for more.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nA T:<\/strong><\/a> Stop caring about stats. Focus on writing better stories, not chasing external validation.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nOC Andrea:<\/strong><\/a> There\u2019s no such thing as the perfect story. Stop doubting \u2014 start writing.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nM.Lane:<\/strong> <\/a>Don’t be afraid to pull the trigger on something dramatic or uncomfortable. Readers want to feel alongside your characters \u2014 give them an escape into a dreamscape.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nAim\u00e9e: <\/strong><\/a>Write from your heart, write for yourself first, then for your audience. Don\u2019t sacrifice your inner muse for the sake of outside approval.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nWitch_of_Hellridge:<\/strong><\/a> Start messy. Start gloriously, unapologetically bad. You can’t edit a blank page, but you can shape brilliance from chaos.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

VioletOfCourse:<\/strong> <\/a>The first story I ever wrote was Appsalootly Batty and to this day, I\u2019m still trying to write a version of it worthy of publishing. For now, I have a few versions on the internet that are alright, I guess.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Ditzy One:<\/strong> <\/a>Avoiding Fate… but I only published it because I wanted an Inky badge. \ud83e\udd23 Knowing the feedback it got, yes I would publish it today \u2014 but personally, it needs a lot of rework. It\u2019s too long and needs to be broken down into multiple books! It\u2019s an example that sometimes the work you aren\u2019t passionate about still has a place \u2014 don\u2019t be your own worst critic!<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Emil Bronze:<\/strong><\/a> The first story I ever wrote was a Minecraft Fanfiction. I don’t remember the details, but I reused the characters and their names. I wouldn\u2019t publish it now \u2014 7th-grade me doesn\u2019t hold a tealight to current me.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
A T:<\/a><\/strong> The first story I ever wrote was when I was 7, but the first serious one was a 6th-grade story about a Vietnamese refugee child. I mailed it to Tor hoping they\u2019d publish it. I wouldn’t publish it as an adult, but for that age group, it was okay.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
OC Andrea:<\/strong><\/a> The first story I wrote in English started a new journey I didn’t even know I needed. I wrote it to decompress, not expecting readers. Six full stories later, I would absolutely do it all again, starting with that same story.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Aim\u00e9e:<\/strong><\/a> First story: a two-page sci-fi story in my poetry\/journal at 15 years old. The first published story was Sims 4 fanfiction, and I still use that character today.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

What\u2019s one storytelling rule you love to break \u2014 and why does it work for you?<\/h2>\n\nDitzy One:<\/strong><\/a> I love breaking the fourth wall \u2014 letting the protagonist interact with readers. I also enjoy writing sentence fragments to create emotional pull.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nEmil Bronze: <\/strong><\/a>I break the “always plot your story” rule. I don\u2019t plan at all \u2014 I get a rough idea in my head and run with it. I keep a simple factbook for consistency, but no detailed outlines.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nA T:<\/strong> <\/a>Rules? What are those? Rules are just guidelines. If you break a rule, just make sure you break it well.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nOC Andrea:<\/strong> <\/a>I don’t plot or plan. Strict outlines don\u2019t work for me. Also, I love adverbs and sprinkle commas like glitter throughout my stories.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nM.Lane:<\/strong><\/a> I hate rigid genre expectations. If everyone\u2019s writing werewolf stories a certain way, I want to flip it. Familiar ideas can be shocking and fresh with a new spin.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nAim\u00e9e:<\/strong><\/a> I don\u2019t follow traditional first-draft rules. I write one chapter at a time \u2014 almost like a soap opera \u2014 instead of a full first draft.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\nEmil Bronze:<\/strong><\/a> Run with it. Doesn\u2019t matter how messy or trashy it is \u2014 just get it written. Fix it later.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nJERomm:<\/strong><\/a> Organize your thoughts \u2014 whether it\u2019s a full outline or a quick summary. Make sure your first few lines grab attention, and your last lines leave readers desperate for more.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nA T:<\/strong><\/a> Stop caring about stats. Focus on writing better stories, not chasing external validation.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nOC Andrea:<\/strong><\/a> There\u2019s no such thing as the perfect story. Stop doubting \u2014 start writing.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nM.Lane:<\/strong> <\/a>Don’t be afraid to pull the trigger on something dramatic or uncomfortable. Readers want to feel alongside your characters \u2014 give them an escape into a dreamscape.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nAim\u00e9e: <\/strong><\/a>Write from your heart, write for yourself first, then for your audience. Don\u2019t sacrifice your inner muse for the sake of outside approval.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nWitch_of_Hellridge:<\/strong><\/a> Start messy. Start gloriously, unapologetically bad. You can’t edit a blank page, but you can shape brilliance from chaos.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Emil Bronze: <\/strong><\/a>I break the “always plot your story” rule. I don\u2019t plan at all \u2014 I get a rough idea in my head and run with it. I keep a simple factbook for consistency, but no detailed outlines.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
A T:<\/strong> <\/a>Rules? What are those? Rules are just guidelines. If you break a rule, just make sure you break it well.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
OC Andrea:<\/strong> <\/a>I don’t plot or plan. Strict outlines don\u2019t work for me. Also, I love adverbs and sprinkle commas like glitter throughout my stories.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
M.Lane:<\/strong><\/a> I hate rigid genre expectations. If everyone\u2019s writing werewolf stories a certain way, I want to flip it. Familiar ideas can be shocking and fresh with a new spin.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\nJERomm:<\/strong><\/a> Organize your thoughts \u2014 whether it\u2019s a full outline or a quick summary. Make sure your first few lines grab attention, and your last lines leave readers desperate for more.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nA T:<\/strong><\/a> Stop caring about stats. Focus on writing better stories, not chasing external validation.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nOC Andrea:<\/strong><\/a> There\u2019s no such thing as the perfect story. Stop doubting \u2014 start writing.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\nM.Lane:<\/strong> <\/a>Don’t be afraid to pull the trigger on something dramatic or uncomfortable. Readers want to feel alongside your characters \u2014 give them an escape into a dreamscape.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nAim\u00e9e: <\/strong><\/a>Write from your heart, write for yourself first, then for your audience. Don\u2019t sacrifice your inner muse for the sake of outside approval.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\nWitch_of_Hellridge:<\/strong><\/a> Start messy. Start gloriously, unapologetically bad. You can’t edit a blank page, but you can shape brilliance from chaos.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\nA T:<\/strong><\/a> Stop caring about stats. Focus on writing better stories, not chasing external validation.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
