Inkitt: What inspired you to become an author? Was there a specific moment that sparked your passion for storytelling?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> I’ve always been a creativity junkie, diving into everything from music and dancing to art and drama. My interest in writing started with an app called Episode Interactive. At a young age, I gravitated toward visual narratives, and by the time I was 12 or 13 years old, I began writing stories of my own on the app. I wrote my first interactive story on the platform and constantly bugged my mum for feedback. Looking back, I cringe at some of my early creations, but hey, it’s all part of the journey!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Inkitt: <\/b>What was the first story you ever wrote? How does it compare to what you write now?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> It was only in recent years that I began writing my first book, ‘My Unusual Betrothal’. Around the same time, I stumbled upon Inkitt and decided to upload my work. For a first book, it was a commendable effort, though now I can spot all the quirky little elements I overlooked back then.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

My writing style has undeniably matured and gained much more depth, making it much easier to spot the difference between my earlier works and my more recent ones.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Finding Success on Inkitt<\/b><\/h2>\n

Inkitt: <\/b>How did you first discover Inkitt, and what was your early experience like on the platform?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> I believe I first discovered Inkitt when I began looking for platforms to publish my books. Inkitt has allowed me to connect with like-minded individuals and provide analytics on my story’s progress. The supportive community inspired me to continue writing, even during moments of self-doubt and negativity about my writing.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Inkitt: <\/b>What was it like seeing your story gain traction? Were there any key milestones or reader interactions that stood out?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> Shock, joy, and a whirlwind of emotions all hit at once. It’s one thing to have others read your work, but discovering that they genuinely enjoyed it was totally unexpected!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Several interactions with readers stood out, with many offering encouragement and some unfortunately negative. While I encourage constructive criticism, I also do my best to disregard any feedback intended to be mean-spirited or damaging, although that can be easier said than done.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Inkitt: <\/b>Did Inkitt’s analytics or engagement features help you shape your story?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> Most definitely. The analytics feature and engaging with my readers have offered me insight into areas where I could improve my writing, e.g., cliffhangers, story pace, etc., and provided feedback that has contributed to my growth as a writer.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Inkitt: <\/b>Have you participated in any Inkitt writing contests? What was that experience like?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> Yes, I have taken part in a few. Although I have never won a writing competition on Inkitt, it was still an incredible experience. I’m grateful that a few of the stories I have submitted ranked among the most read for a significant portion of the contest.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

The Galatea Journey<\/b><\/h2>\n

Inkitt: <\/b>When did you find out you were going to be a Galatea author? How did that feel?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> I received the email late last year in 2024. This was an opportunity I had wanted since joining Inkitt as an author \u2013 yet never believed would happen \u2013 and the realisation that it would become a reality honestly made my day!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

I was so excited and grateful that Galatea chose to feature my work. I also want to express my gratitude to all the readers on Inkitt who helped make this possible.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Inkitt: <\/b>What are you most excited about readers seeing in your book on Galatea?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> It’s the hurdles that my characters overcome and the inspiring ways they tackle them. I am a sucker for a heartfelt story, and I enjoy emotional reads, whether they’re uplifting or bittersweet. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

My goal in writing is to create a genuine connection with my readers.<\/strong> I want them to do more than just read my stories; I want them to feel an emotional bond with the characters and dive into my narrative as if they’re living the adventure themselves! Plus, I’m a huge fan of happy endings and satisfying resolutions\u2014something I’m excited for my readers to experience!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Inkitt: <\/b>What advice would you give to other Inkitt authors hoping to sign a Galatea contract?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> Keep going, and believe in yourself while letting go of negative feedback. Remember, even renowned authors encounter harsh criticism, but that never stopped them! It’s all about listening to constructive feedback as well as appreciating the positive comments.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Also, remember to promote yourself on social media; I overlooked this aspect until the last few years. Don’t be shy to seek read-for-read opportunities on Inkitt; there are so many authors looking for feedback.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Inkitt: <\/b>Were there specific moments on Inkitt that paved the way for your Galatea signing?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> I’m honestly not too sure; I wish I knew too.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Overcoming Writing Challenges<\/b><\/h2>\n

Inkitt: <\/b>What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your writing journey, and how have you overcome them?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> I often grapple with self-doubt in almost everything I do, and it is something I am still working towards today.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Life distractions, such as the early birth of my son, added to my stress while preparing my book, Demon King’s Possession, for publication on Galatea. My editor was extremely understanding, but it was one of the most stressful times of my life. I managed by taking each day as it came and setting realistic daily goals for myself, and not beating myself up about it if I couldn’t achieve them.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

My Nan has always said, ‘Live in the now.’ If there’s nothing I can do about a situation at present, it’s best to revisit it later when action is possible. This little piece of advice has saved me so many times.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Inkitt: <\/b>How do you stay motivated during long projects or tough writing days?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> I can easily lose myself in writing for hours. I become so engrossed that I sometimes hardly notice the change from day to night, or vice versa.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

When I do have tough writing days, I typically take a break where I might work on a book cover design\u2014something I also like to do\u2014or create a new short video or post for my Instagram or Inkitt account. I often revisit my work the following day or take a brief hiatus on particularly challenging days. It doesn’t hurt to put writing aside for a little while. Other times, I may smash out a particular scene I have been looking forward to writing, which allows me to regain momentum before returning to the section where I encountered the block.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Inkitt: <\/b>How do you overcome writer’s block?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> There are times when I find it helpful to set my writing aside for another day if it is starting to frustrate me. Otherwise, I might end up feeling like whatever scene I come up with doesn’t quite fit. Sometimes, I try to write down as many one-liner plots or ideas for upcoming scenes as I can, or I try to envision the scene and see where it takes me.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Creative Process and Influences<\/b><\/h2>\n

Inkitt: <\/b>Which authors or books have influenced your writing style the most?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> There are a few authors I absolutely love on Galatea who have influenced my writing style.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Reading mature, well-edited books with rich layers has encouraged me to elevate my writing, making it more detailed and nuanced! For instance, Pepper Winters’ <\/span>Fable of Happiness<\/span> really dives into the detailed character development and the allure of dark fantasy. She immerses readers in the characters’ worlds, exposing their emotions and thoughts. You find yourself relating to them and grasping the reasons behind their actions and words.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Authors like C. Swallow, author of the <\/span>Twin Dragon<\/span> series, have opened my eyes to erotic scenes and deeper character interactions.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Sapir Englard, author of <\/span>Millennium Wolves<\/span>, sparked my interest in writing fantasy stories involving werewolves and shapeshifters. Her flowing writing style captivates readers beautifully!<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

These are just a handful of writers who have influenced my writing, enhancing my ability to connect with my audience and establishing strong characters.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Inkitt: <\/b>Where do you find inspiration for your stories, characters, and worlds?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> They come to me randomly, usually when I am about to fall asleep, so I quickly open my notes, jot down my ideas and revisit them when I’m ready to write a new story or need fresh plot concepts. Occasionally, I find inspiration from other narratives; I might read a book and think, ‘Ooh, wouldn’t it be exciting if that were in there!’ and just like that, more ideas flow in. I have so many ideas saved on my notes that I’m not sure if I’ll ever get through them.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Inkitt: <\/b>Do you have any specific writing rituals or environments that help you get into a creative mindset?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> I prefer at night, once everything has been done for the day and I have some personal time. I like to sit with my partner while he watches TV or plays Playstation, and I write comfortably tucked in the corner of the sofa.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Inkitt: <\/b>Are you a plotter (carefully outlining your story) or a pantser (letting the story develop as you write)?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> I’m 80% Plotter and 20% Pantser. I create a detailed outline of the story, covering everything from beginning to end, including character appearances and personalities, before I actually begin writing. This process is one of my favourite parts of writing! Throughout the story, I make changes if new ideas arise, something fits better, or something doesn’t make sense and needs tweaking. Additionally, if I need a break from writing, whether for a break or other reasons, I can easily revisit my plot points and chapter summaries instead of rereading the entire last chapter. My short-term memory is awful!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Inkitt: <\/b>How do you develop your characters? Do they ever surprise you?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> Before I start writing, I typically outline who I want my characters to be. I aim to present each character’s point of view at least once throughout the story; I find it important and it opens the door to other ideas and perspectives not considered by the main characters. I also believe that secondary characters contribute significantly to a story, more than many realise.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

A few of my characters have undergone a 360-degree shift in their moral alignments- something I didn’t even plan during my planning process. I often surprise myself at how much a character evolves when I revisit my story; I think to myself, ‘No way that’s the same jerk!’<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Inkitt: <\/b>What part of the writing process do you enjoy the most?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> Planning is one of my favourite parts. It’s where my ideas flow and take root! I sometimes struggle to jot everything down at once, which leads to a flurry of ideas and scenes, but I gradually piece it all together like a puzzle. In terms of the book itself, I enjoy writing scenes that have a significant impact on the story or convey strong messages to the reader, usually emotional ones – both the good and the bad- and the story’s conclusion. It’s as if I can visualise the world I’m writing about and the characters, and then I write down what I see. It’s truly amazing!<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Inkitt: <\/b>Are there any recurring themes or messages you hope readers take away from your stories?<\/b><\/h4>\n

A. L. Smith:<\/strong> Bad guys never take home the trophy, and people are like mystery novels full of plot twists\u2014so hold off on judging that book by its cover (quite literally!).<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n
