Awake
I awoke to shimmers of sunlight panning across my face. I knew spring had finally arrived. I sat up and began stretching as usual when I felt my muscles creek like they had been immobile for a long time. My name is Chase, or as everyone calls me, Chase the curious. I was given the name for being overly curious about things, not just a few things but everything! I knew I could not wait because today was the first day of school, and we would learn how to do second-level things.
I walked into the main room, noticing my mom standing near the table.
“Well, good morning, sleepy head. Are you excited to go to school today?” She asked.
“Yes, I am, although my stomach is a little nervous and hungry at the same time.” I spoke.
She smiled and pointed at the table to show me she had food waiting for me already. As I walked up to the table, I noticed a large piece of raw meat sitting there on my plate. Then, suddenly, my stomach began to growl like a wild animal.
" Mom, today is the first day of school. Isn’t there something special for breakfast or just the same ole thing?” I asked.
“Well, I am sure I can go out and look for some wild mushrooms or some wild broccoli for you. Would you prefer to be a rabbit for the first day of school? Predator or prey, my dear, make up your mind.” She spoke.
I hated when she would do that to me. But how could I argue with her? She was right about that. I was not a tiny fluffy furry animal that would sit there eating leafy plants. I quickly ate what my mom had left for me and walked outside of the cave to the stream to take a bath. As I stood on the edge, my reflection shimmered in the water. I could see my eyes were redder than usual, my scales had turned a darker green color, my brilliant wings had turned red, and my horns now had red in them. Oh, if I have forgotten to mention, I am not a boy; I am indeed a real dragon with claws and brilliantly shiny sharp white teeth.
You probably didn’t expect to hear that, but being a dragon has advantages. At least it does when you’re a teen dragon which I am about to turn. Today at school, we are supposed to learn how to breathe fire; I wonder how many new students will succeed. I heard my mother’s voice echo out of the cave for me to take my bath, so I climbed into the water, watching my reflection disappear amongst the ripples of the water. I began scrubbing myself and ensuring all the dirt from the past few months was washed away. I was so excited to get to school that I decided to try flying to school today.
