ONE

Kane Moonblood walked down the pitch-black hallway where cells aligned the walls around him. He didn’t bother lighting torches since he could see perfectly and he knew this place by heart.

Whimpers and soft cries emitted from the cells. They filled him with sick satisfaction.

Good. Let them be scared.

His boots echoed off the cobblestone floor as he slowly walked by. As he passed by the cells the sounds of terror would intensify. He kept pausing in front of a door and grinned as he heard the cries of terror increase as the prisoner anticipated him walking in. He kept going until he finally reached the cell he wanted to see.

With a flick of his wrist, the cell door unlocked and slowly creaked open for him. He stepped inside and with another flick of his wrist, the torch on the wall came to life, casting light in the small cell. He wanted the prisoner to see his face.

In the corner of the cell huddled a female gargoyle, her wrists and ankles shackled. Her black hair was dirty and matted, her wings had been broken off and short stubs were all that remained, various cracks decorated her stone form and she appeared as though she would crumble at any moment. Despite her wounded form, her yellow-green eyes still held anger and strength. Good, just what he needed.

He knelt in front of her and she bared her teeth at him.

“You don’t scare me,” she growled.

He smirked at her. “Good.”

He closed his eyes for a moment and channeled his powers. He took a deep breath and sucked all of her life’s energy from her body. She shrieked with pain and her eyes rolled to the back of her head. Her body slowly formed more cracks and light streamed from her body as she trembled violently as her soul was painfully taken from her.

He didn’t stop until he took every last drop of her life force. When he was done, her body let out one more shudder before crumbling into dust in front of him.

He released a contented sigh and stood, feeling refreshed. “Caius,” he barked out.

The Necromancer walked in, his expression full of annoyance, but he did the task without protest.

Caius lifted his hand and uttered his spell in a language so old that not even Kane had been around when it was spoken.

A swirl of wind formed over the crumbled remains of the gargoyle’s body. Slowly, the pieces lifted and came back together as it was rebuilt. In a matter of moments the gargoyle sat before him once again, though this time her wings were back and no cracks were in her form, completely healed. She sat crossed-legged, eyes closed, a peaceful expression on her face. There was a circular symbol with jagged lines going through it that indicated the Necromancer magic.

“Awaken,” Caius ordered.

The gargoyle’s eyes snapped open and revealed the eerie green color that signified she was under their control.

A sinister smile crossed Kane’s face as he saw he was still in complete control. Everything was still going according to plan.
