Cigarettes Duet - Princess Chelsea

Cries rang out, on a little brick house atop the hill in the village. The people hurried into their homes, out of fear of what they might hear. Indeed, the little house was once filled with joy and laughter. A successful businessman, who settled down with a beautiful wife, who gave birth to their daughter. Indeed, they once served as a symbol of peace and prosperity, but ever since the passing of the wife during her second childbirth with the son dead, it was now a cold lonely house atop a hill, with a father who hid himself away all day and a young daughter, who began to take upon the life of a criminal. But indeed, as all thieves are eventually caught, so was she. And the day happened to be today. The father, like his daughter, once also lived the cunning and deceptive lifestyle, yet when the topic of her smoking a Marlboro came up, the father’s temper got the best of him. They argued back and forth, until the daughter left of her accord, leaving her father who soon after died of depression. The daughter hosted the funeral, regretting her last conversation with her father.

Indeed, the daughter saw the villagers run into their homes, fearing they would incur the wrath of the father. The daughter turned towards him, clutching a relic from her mother in her hands, and begged him to forgive her.

“Oh, Father! It was only but a cigarette!” she pleaded. The father simply stared at her, resting on his armchair, and barely whispered “Oh my dear daughter! You love me do you not?” She immediately shook her head and so he continued, “Then you would be sensible to stop this act as it saddens me.” he said, raising his voice a little. But his daughter, who he thought of as an innocent lamb, would go on to remind her father of his smoking habits. “It’s just a cigarette like you always used to do!” she yelled, crying and infuriating, for she could not understand why her father wouldn’t empathize. He sighed in return and explained how he stopped, as he didn’t want to harm his pretty lungs no more, if only for the sake of being seen as “cool”. And yet, his daughter who took greatly after her late mother reasoned it was only twice a week. To this, her father who was greatly astonished muttered “It’ll soon be ten”. Angering the daughter, she cursed and cursed but what broke her father’s heart most was when she screamed “Oh my idiot Father, can’t you trust me one bit? When I want to stop I can!” To her surprise, her father only wept, and for a second she thought he might never stop weeping. Kneeling against the armchair which her father sat upon, she took his hand and whispered, “It’s just a cigarette only...” and yet her father asked her “Perhaps, but is it worth it if we fight?”. Keeping her temper under control, she reasoned it was from the village boy, with whom she had spent a great amount of time. Hearing this, her father only sobbed even more. “Oh, foolish daughter! If anyone found out, you and the son of the Priest were smoking! “Oh, the number of lashes!”. And thus, broke out a chorus of screams and muttering. “I only did once! Believe me!” “Until it will be 10, O daughter!”. And they fought and fought, until out of frustration the poor daughter screamed, she was sorry she did it, yet her father never forgave her. And so, packing her bags she left, leaving her father who was still weeping alone.

They didn’t fight because of the cigarettes, no they did not! It was for the lifestyle the daughter took! It was for the lack of trust and overprotectiveness that caged the daughter! It was the fear of the father that his only offspring would pass away before him! It was the fear of the father that his daughter may face lashes! It was everything but cigarettes, but because they would not be honest, they failed each other.
