Until My Last Breath(One Shot Story
Until My Last Breath (One shot)by Hazuri
(YUNA POV)
I know someone is waiting for me to come back. He’s Sora, my childhood friend. It’s been years. We were separated when my family moved away to another place.
Sora and I promised we would always stay together, no matter what. He even gave me a necklace so I could remember him and never forget.
One day, I finally got the chance to visit him with my friend, Kiyoshi. I knocked on his door, feeling so happy when he opened it—happy that he was still there.
Yuna: Sora...
I entered and hugged him the moment I saw him. But then—he pushed me away.
Sora: Who are you??
I was shocked and heartbroken when he said that. I explained that I was his childhood friend. I showed him the necklace he had given me and reminded him of the promise we made. But he didn’t care. He kicked me out of his house.
What’s happening? Why doesn’t he remember me?
I visited him every day, trying to make him remember, but he never listened. He always said the same thing: “I don’t know who you are. I’m sorry.” But even then, I never gave up. I wanted to keep that promise.
Day by day, I started to notice that he looked pale and thin. Then one day, he suddenly collapsed while I was talking to him. He was taken to the hospital. The doctor told me he was in a very bad condition and might not survive much longer.
My heart felt like it was breaking. I didn’t even realize I had started crying.
He was silent most of the time. Still, I kept coming, even though he didn’t want me there. Even as the days passed, I stayed. I wouldn’t leave him.
But one day, he had had enough.
We were on the rooftop of the hospital.
Sora: How many times do I have to tell you—
Yuna: Yeah, I know... I know you don’t remember me, okay? But I’m here to take care of you.
Sora: I don’t need your help!
Yuna: Sora, are you joking? Maybe you’re lying about not remembering me.
Sora: A lie? Maybe you are.
Yuna: Are you mad because I left you for so many years? I’m sorry, okay? It was my family’s decision.
Sora: (Silent)
Yuna: I have something to show you.
(I showed him again the necklace he gave me.)
You gave me this necklace so I’d never forget you. But now you’re the one who doesn’t remember me?
Sora: Hey! I don’t know you... and that’s the truth. Can you just accept it and leave?!
Yuna: I’ve always kept this.
(I showed it more closely.)
We made a promise—that we’d end up together—
Suddenly, he grabbed the necklace and threw it off the rooftop, over the railing. I was speechless. I couldn’t believe what he just did. He looked at me as if nothing had happened.
Sora: Leave me alone. You’re pissing me off.
I couldn’t speak. My heart felt so heavy. I wanted to burst into tears. I looked at him, silently asking why he was acting like this.
I couldn’t take it anymore, so I walked away without looking back. Down on the ground, I tried to find the necklace—but I couldn’t. That necklace meant everything to me.
Kiyoshi comforted me at my house. He was worried after hearing me cry when he called me. After that day, I stopped visiting Sora. He wasn’t the same person I once knew.
But even though he was different... I still loved him.
Every day, I couldn’t stop thinking about him. How is he now? Is he okay? Should I visit him?
I shook my head, remembering what he said to me before.
Two months passed.
I decided to return to my hometown where my family lived. There was nothing more for me here. I only came back because of Sora—but now, he doesn’t even remember me. He hates me.
His voice... his look... his words... that was it.
That night, I was packing. Kiyoshi helped me. Before I left, he gave me a letter. I asked him what kind of letter it was, but he stayed silent. His expression told me he was hiding something. He told me I really needed to read it—but I decided to wait until I got home.
(Airport)
At the airport, I was waiting with Kiyoshi. He left for a bit to buy us drinks. While waiting, I got bored and decided to read the letter.
As soon as I opened it, I was shocked.
Inside was the necklace Sora had thrown away—and the letter was from him.
I ran out of the airport, trying to find a ride back to the hospital. I was shaking and sobbing in the car, praying I wasn’t too late.
I wanted to be with him...
Until his last breath.
Why now? What was that letter? Sora... what have you done?
(The Letter)
I’m sorry, Yuna, for the way I treated you—and for lying to you too.
I remember you. I will never forget you. You’re special to me.
I regret everything I did. But I thought it was the best choice at the time.
I pushed you away because I didn’t want you to see me die. I didn’t want to hurt you. I wanted you to hate me—so you wouldn’t care, so you’d leave.
But I still love you. I was always waiting for you. I’m glad I got to see you again and know that you’re okay.
But Yuna... I’m not the one who can stay with you forever. I want you to find someone who can treat you better than I could.
Maybe it was better that you moved away. We didn’t have many memories—maybe it’s easier that way. Maybe you won’t cry as much.
But Yuna... I want you to be happy. Please move on. Please forgive me.
It’s okay if you still hate me. I deserve it. It’s also okay if you forget about me... since I made someone who loved me feel unwanted.
Thank you for everything.
I love you.
(Hospital)
I arrived at the hospital and ran to his room, tears falling from my eyes.
But when I got there... he was gone.
I knew this was his room—I had visited him so many times. I asked the nurse.
Nurse: I’m sorry... the Sora you’re looking for passed away last week. He’s in the morgue.
(Morgue)
I slowly lifted the blanket covering his body, hoping it wasn’t real.
But it was him.
He looked paler, thinner.
I broke down crying, trying to wake him up. The nurse stayed to comfort me.
A few minutes later, Kiyoshi arrived. I confronted him and started punching his chest.
Yuna: Why did you give me that letter just now?! When did he give it to you?!
I stopped when he finally spoke.
Kiyoshi: I’m sorry, okay? I was visiting someone else at the hospital when I saw him. He gave me the letter last week.
He explained everything... and asked me to give it to you after a week.
(Flashback - Last Week)
Kiyoshi: Why wait a week?
Sora: I don’t want her to see me.
Kiyoshi: See you...? What do you mean—
Sora: Please take care of her. Be good to her.
Kiyoshi: (Silent)
Sora: Can you promise me?
Kiyoshi: (He looked into Sora’s eyes and nodded, understanding.)
Kiyoshi: I’m really sorry...
He hugged me while I cried in his arms.
(Many Years Later)
After finishing work one evening, I stopped by a bouquet shop to buy flowers.
A man suddenly approached me. He asked my name, asked if I had a boyfriend, and if he could take me out. Many men had tried to win my heart, but I always apologized and walked away.
(Cemetery)
I placed the flowers on his grave, lit a candle, and stayed for as long as I wanted.
Even until my last breath, Sora will be the one in my heart. My only. My forever.
The End.
